Classic message from Mac X

I'm starting over. Suffice to say I've read the articles, I've done what they say whenever my computer lets me or information given in the articles is available. I've done a clean install of Mac 9. I can't start classic from mac X as this message occurs: There is a problem with updating classic specific files. Classic unable to update files in system folder on MHardrive. What do I do? It a mirror faced silver with dual 1 GHz PowerPC (2.1)G4 1MB L3 cache per processor.
System Version: Mac OS X 10.3.9 (7W98)
Kernel Version: Darwin 7.9.0

Hi, delish -
Been trying to puzzle out what might be wrong.
One thing that confuses me a bit - in your other thread you mentioned having several installs of OS 9.2.2 on the hard drive, and mention something about a backup set. Could you clarify that a bit?
Also, is your machine a Quicksilver or an MDD model? To help clarify, here are links to pictures of the fronts of each type (links go to pix at the apple-history.com website, a great resource for Mac model info) -
Quicksilver model - http://www.apple-history.com/images/models/g4_quick.jpg
MDD (Mirrored Drive Door) model - http://www.apple-history.com/images/models/g4_mdd.jpg
Did it come with a separate, bootable OS 9.2.2 Install CD?

  • Iphone receiving read messages from mac mail

My iphone used to only receive unread emails as long as entourage on my mac wasnt open. Now i have moved to mac mail and my phone is receiving read messages from mac mail. Is there a setting im missing that will make my phone only receive new messages?
I still want my mac mail to receive these same emails later as it used to work.

You would still receive read e-mails in the inbox on your iPhone (and vice-versa) if you used IMAP but they would show as having been read and not as new. IMAP keeps all mail clients synchronised. The only alternative would be to use POP to download to your phone and IMAP to download to your laptop and create another folder on your computer and move mail over to it when read. By default, POP only downloads from the inbox so your phone would not download it again. IMAP would leave a copy in the folder you have created on the server in case you have problems with your laptop. If you delete read e-mails on your laptop, you can set it to remove them from the server after a fixed time and they would remain there until then but your phone would not download them again.

  • How to remove copy of message from .Mac server

To autoremove the copy of a message on the .Mac server, Mail help says "choose Mail > Preferences and click Accounts. Select a .Mac or IMAP account, click Mailbox Behaviors, and change the option for storing messages on the server."
Unfortunately, that option seems to be missing from both the "Mailbox Behaviors" and "Advanced" tabs.
I have a separate pop account from another ISP that does have the option under the "Advanced" tab.
Does anyone know how to do this for the .Mac account?
    Thanks!

A .Mac type account with Mail is really an IMAP account and behaves in the same way.
There is no option to automatically remove messages from the server for an IMAP account's Inbox mailbox with any email client such as the Mail.app.
You can access a .Mac account as the following account types with the Mail.app.
    .Mac
    IMAP
    POP
And as the following account types with another email client on your Mac or on another computer - a Mac or Windows PC.
    IMAP
    POP
I access my .Mac account as a .Mac type with Mail and as an IMAP account with Outlook Express on my Windows XP notebook at work.
A benefit of an IMAP account is the ability to keep all server stored mailboxes available and synchronized with an email client on different computers.
If you want to access your .Mac account as a POP account with Mail will require deleting and recreating the account selecting POP as the account type instead of .Mac or IMAP.
If you are not storing the account's Sent messages on the server with Mail, before deleting the account you need to transfer all sent messages from the account's Sent mailbox to a user created "On My Mac" location mailbox which is stored locally on the hard drive.
When deleting an account with Mail, the account named folder at Home > Library > Mail which stores the mailboxes for the account is also deleted along with the mailboxes for the account.
This will not affect any messages currently stored on the server in the account's Inbox mailbox.

  • Cannot download messages from .mac using Mail or Entourage

When I open Mail, it will display the headers, new and old, for messages in all mailboxes on .mac, but if I highlight a specific message, the activity viewer says it is being downloaded, or the cache updated but it never completes and activity viewer stops.. Exactly the same thing happens with Entourage.
.Mac support says it's not their problem but it seems to me it must be on the server side since 2 apps have the same issue.
Any ideas? I have tried rebuilding mailboxes, deleting /Library/Mail reinstalling, etc etc
    iMac G5 PPC   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I did wonder if it was a network issue but the same thing happens when I change from my usual dsl/router access to dialup; also I tried using my wife's iBook G4 running Panther and it's the same. I set up Thunderbird and Eudora on my work PC (windows 2000) and they both download an inaccurate list of folder (ie, existing ones plus old ones that have been deleted in the past, as well as some non-existent ones. They also tell me that some folders which exist on the web interface, don't exist). I can then access some messages but not ones in the Inbox.
That strikes me as some kind of corruption on the .mac side, though I'm no expert. Weird.

  • Mail App deleting messages from .Mac server

    Hi
I haven't seen this issue on this board. Let me know if I'm wrong.
This is on the interaction between my .Mac email account and the Mail Application. I have two email accounts set up.
I have 2 computers and keep my mail on one, so I kept my previous (Eudora) mail apps set to "leave mail on server" on the other.
I don't see a setting for this for my .Mac email account in Mail.app. When I check my mail with the Mail.app recently, on the computer where I don't keep my mail, it is deleting the mail from the .Mac account. I don't think it did this before. The mail is no longer on .Mac when I check via a browser.
My earthlink pop account seems to be working fine.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated
    Quicksilver G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Whether it's correct or not depends on the
circumstances under which mail is removed from the
server. If it's because it's being moved out of the
account Inbox and into "On My Mac" custom
    mailboxes, then yes, it's correct.
For IMAP-type accounts, mail on account mailboxes are
stored on the server instead of locally (you can
configure this behavior for mailboxes other than
Inbox in Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox
Behaviors). Whatever you do to that mail you're
doing it to the mail stored on the server. If you
tell Mail to move a message out of Inbox,
that's what Mail does, it moves the message out of
    Inbox at the server.
Thanks -- so if I understand this properly, the mail is stored on the inbox on the server, but if I have a rule that moves it to a mailbox that I created locally (imported from Eudora, for example) it moves it from the server to my local mailbox *not leaving a copy on the server*. I have lots of mailboxes that I use to sort the mail and rules to route messages. So to correct this issue I should disable the rules if I don't want the mail moved off the server and into a local mailbox.
Many thanks for your help and patience

  • How do i restore deleted email messages from mac mail back to hotmail server?

i have a hotmail email address i use, i have been using      mac lion mail
here the problem - i found loads of my emails missing when using hotmail webpage
but in MacMail they are all there still.
i found that in macmail settings "remove copy from server after retrieving a message" was selected(after one week). (now i have disabled this function)
how can i send them back to the hotmail server email box?
Many thanks in advance for help. Rick

    rickonhismac wrote:
the emails are in inbox of mac mail back to 2009 but when i log in the hotmail.com website they only go back to jan 2012
i think mac mail has erased the from hotmail server after placing them in the mac mail.
i need emails back on hotmail server for access to old emails when working out and about with ipad.
I do not know if you can unfortunately, having deleted them from the POP server and as Hotmail does not offer an iMap or Exchange solution for OSX they may be 'marooned'
I will search around and see if I can find a solution.
But before anything else happens backup your mail (Mailbox Menu>Export Mailbox) and save the file somewhere you can find it, you probably don't need to hear this but you should be (have been) backing up regularly, for this and many other reasons.
I'll post back if I can find a solution to the issue.

  • Messages from Mac to Mac?

How do I establish contact with a fellow Mac user through Messages, Version 8.0 (4218)?   Both of us use only Macs, not an iDevice.   I have my correspondent's email address, but Messages will not send to that address.  I have established contact through Messages to two users of the iOS, but not yet with any Mac users.  Can it be done?

    Hi Again,
Just to be clear it does not have to be an iCloud linked Apple ID.
It just has to be a valid Apple ID.
Messages is built on the iChat Engine.
iChat started life as an AIM client app that did text only.
In Version 2 it became AV capable.
iChat 3 brought us Jabber accounts
iChat 4 brought us four way Video chats and iChat Theatre.
iChat 6 added the text Only Yahoo option
Messages in Mountain Lion (version 7) changed the interface away from the Buddy List to the main windows and it's tabbed chats (you can elect to display the Buddy lists)
It also add the iMessages account.
Messages 8 loses iChat Theatre (RIP)
Google advertises you can add Facebook Buddies and Facebook do the reverse.
This is no big deal as you can add Jabber Buddies to any Jabber list in any Jabber capable app.
What these two service do seem to list is the ability to add AIM buddies to the lists.
AIM also say you can add Facebook and Google Buddies.
However it is less clear if this works away from a web Login to each of these servers.
With other Jabber servers you sometimes get access to what are called Transports or Gateways that enable the adding of buddies from different services to a Jabber Buddy List
A set of instructions can be found here  (where it says Jabber app it means a Jabber specific one like Psi that can do the Servie Discovery for the transport).
Actually this one is with pics from Psi
I have based some of this based on the .org part of the ID that is behind the blanked out bit in your picture.

  • Cannot send message (from mac mail) using the server iCloud

My Mac Mail send stopped working during a large number of mail sends yesterday.Could that be an issue? If so, what to do?
Message further reads - The sender address [email protected] was rejected by the server smtp.mail.me.com.
I deleted the account and set it up again, but still can't get the mail out. Same messages
If I go on to iCloud, mail send is working fine.
Can anyone see anything wrong or suggest what to do?
I've deleted the user name below for the screenshot.

  • Sent message from Mac Mail work email shows my personal gmail account as Mail to: and account summary shows outgoing mail server as smtp.google while incoming shows imap.google

sent email from work through Mac Mail shows to the sender Mail to: (personal gmail). Account summary shows smtp.google on outgoing server and imap.google on incoming

Is there a way to add this automatically?
For a semi-permanent change, the Sending Server is named as "OutGoing Mail Server SMTP" on the Preference pane for each Mail Account.
To change its specifics, move the mouse cursor over it and choose "Edit SMTP Server List" from the drop-down Menu. Then choose the SMTP Server you wish to inspect/change and its information will be shown. If using similar ones for two different email accounts, change the description field, e.g., change "gmail" to "gmail (work)".

  • How to get handoff from mac to iOS to work properly

I have MBP late 2012, and can send SMS text messages from Mac, send and receive phone calls from Mac, however, cannot use handoff with Mail, Messages, Safari, and the like. Tried all restarting, re-logging in, etc. No help.
    Any suggestions?
Handoff works perfectly between iPhone 6 and iPad Air. But not between my iOS device and MBP.

I Got everything to work properly by signing out of iCloud on iOS device and then signing  back in, restarting, then shutting off Bluetooth and then back on on both MBP and ios device. But, if you have two iOS devices, make sure that one iOS device Bluetooth is turned off until your MacBook Pro is recognizing handoff with the second iOS device. Then, you can turn the first iOS device Bluetooth back on.
