Classic starting up

for some reason the other day my computer started opening 9.2 right after booting up on 10.4. I have the start up disk marked as 10.4. any idea how to get it to stop doing this?
thanks,
BF

  • Classic starts up, apps won't...

I used the Classic environment successfully fairly recently, and I don't recall any major changes to my system. But just yesterday my wife told me she couldn't get Word to start up. So I tried myself and nothing worked in either of our accounts.
I thought it might be Word/M$, but none of the Classic apps would work, they all hang and require a force quit to shut 'em down. Also when starting Classic itself from the Sys Pref panel, it has hung once and always acts oddly (SBBOD, slow behaviour etc). I tried reinstalling OS9 from the packaged disc, but it installed "OS9 System Support" , the disc (for the mini) says 'OS9 install". I also checked the server and startup folders as mentioned here, but they are empty.
    Don A. help...

    popeye,
does classic start up completely ? ie. can you start up a simple application like SimpleText ?
Or can you start Classic from the Advanced tab in the Classic System Pref with all extensions turned off ?
Can't remember if you're 10.3 or 10.4, but I seem to remember reading a lot of issues with classic under 10.4.1 and 10.4.2, resolved in 10.4.3. Although I bought Tiger at release, I've not installed it yet ( I'm in the middle, nearing the end thankfully, of upgrading from OS9 to 10.3. The OS upgrade was easy, upgrading and finding suitable replacements for older apps is a much harder task). So I can't provide a walkthrough.
Just humour me once, perform a Get Info on the Classic application. Does the Get Info report it as a 'Classic Application' ?

  • Windows Classis Theme - Windows Classic Start Menu / Save Files Dialog

MS, please keep a way back to the 9x interface!
Really anoying that the Windows Classis Start menu (Windows 9x etc.) is not available in Win7.
(and apparently no option "Always Show All Programs" option is available and the subprograms are listed in the same window which makes it a long list)
People and commpanies want the option to go to the old-familiair Windows Classic (9x) interface!!!!
We know it, it works and it suits the purpose: why change!
Furthermore in a company environment all files are saved in a directory structure and not in the 'favorites' folders in the user profile. So please...make a simple classic w7 interface like XP (with a simple Save File Dialog) and not a Christmass Three with bells Interface like W7.
[i think that's one of the reson that ofiice 2007/vista doesn't sell as it should. I'm affraid it is a marketing strategy of MS. But unfortunately I think it drives more people in to alternatives like openoffice etc.]

The XP and later interface has always looked like something designed by Fisher-Price to me. Much more annoying, though, is the inability to go the Classic Start Menu. This is sufficient to cause me to stick with XP until it simply can't handle the then-current software. By that time, Linux should be able to run all Windows progams; it is getting closer to that now. Are you listening, MSFT? I'm an MCP with other certs, and, unless you give the option for the Classic Start Menu and a menu that shows all programs (not just a "personalized menu), XP may be my final Windows version.
I really do not understand Microsoft's lack of logic here. They changed the interface in Office 2007 with the ribbon; millions upon millions of users were proficient with the interface prior to that, and MSFT says they have to learn a new one (I agree with Frank1977 here that it's driving people to OpenOffice). That sounds like a New Coke decision to me. Maybe they have an Apple or Linux mole in there, seeking to give bad advice purposely (for any Biblically literate readers, think "Hushai the Archite", and the advice he gave Absalom).
I have defended Microsoft to many Microsoft-bashers at work, but this is becoming more and more difficult to do. And I'm losing my incentive to do so. PLEASE, Microsoft, add power and abilities, as you are doing, but don't arrogantly insist on forcing professional users to learn a new (and less capable) interface.
Well said , Tewald , have considered other options lately as far as "other operating systems go" , you listening Micro soft ?

  • IPod Classic Starts to Sync But Stops After 5 Seconds

    I'd appreciate help with this...
Two days ago, my iPod Classic stopped syncing.  I don't think this is the situation where the device is not recognized.  When I connect with the USB, the iPod appears in iTunes and it starts to sync but then stops after about 5 seconds. I have the latest iTunes (11.0.5) and iPod software; I re-set the iPod; and I ran a check for errors on the iPod, but it came back clean; I can't erase the latest backup in Properties because it's empty.
Here's what I don't understand - I ran a diagnostic on the connection but it was ok; when I ran a diagnostic on sync, it said no iPod was found -- even though I had the same connection when I ran the diagnostic a few seconds earlier.  I know that the iPod is recognized because I can drag podcasts onto the iPod when it's connected.
Any ideas?  I'd rather not have to reinstall iTunes.

    Hi,
I had a similar problem, all you can do at present to rectify this is to grab your playlist or new created playlist or song from the main library or playlist and drop it into the ipod tab under devices and it will auto sync the changes or songs. Hope this helps.
There seems to be a problem with the syncing of itunes 11 (mine is 11.0.5) when you just use the normal sync method. the above should work and has worked for me when transfering a playlist straight into the ipod it automatically syncs.
    Regards.

  • Classic Starts Up automatically at Login

Ever since I installed the software for my Canon scanner, classic automatically starts up when I log in. It is not marked to automatically start up in the preferences menu and no matter what I've tried, I can't get it to stop. I have to wait until the window opens and stop Classic from starting. It's so annoying, I'd love to fix it!
    Any suggestions?

Open the Accounts pane of System Preferences and check the list of startup items for your account; if any item requires the use of Classic, remove it from the list.

  • Loud beep sound when starting up my Mac book air (2007), right before the classic start-up noise

There is a very loud beep right before the classic Mac start up "bong"
I'm thinking there might be something wrong with the ram...
    Any answers? Thanks!

Although it's an older article, for the most part it's applicable -
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2538
The beep on startup is usually an indication of a failed RAM module. It's also possible that a recent firmware update on the machine was botched. If you didn't recently perform a firmware update then it's probably the RAM. As the RAM is soldered directly to the logic board it cannot be replaced individually, it'd require a full logic board replacement.
Given the age of the machine, it's unlikely still covered by the AppleCare Protection Plan and definitely not the one year limited warranty.
The next course of action would be to bring the machine into the Genius Bar or AASP and have them evaulate your repair options.

  • Can't stop Classic starting up

    Hi,
This is going to sound really stupid to you people but I just can't stop Classic from starting up whenevr I start up my mac. I think I've tried looking in the right area in System Prefs but just can't stop it. Is there somewhere I can check for a piece of Classic software launching on startup, forcing Classic to launch immediately?
    Thanks.
    TiBook 867 MHz G4, 1MB L3 cache, 512 MB SDRAM   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hello Dale,
I don't have classic installed, so it is impossible for me to recreate your problem, however, I think it may be to do with your settings of the extension manager in the classic preferences pane. My first two assumptions have already been posted by the other wise bodies - accounts and start up at log in - both tested negative. There can't be too many options left. What happens when you quit classic? Does it return to normal OSX operation?

  • Classic starts up no matter what!!!

I rarely ever use classic unless someone gives me a document that has to be opened in it. I have it set to not start up automatically but it still does and it's really annoying. I've gone to system preferences and unchecked the box that says "start classic when you log in" and it still starts up every time. When I go to preferences it is still unchecked. I made this change on another computer of mine and Classic never starts up on that one unless I go and manually do it. This is driving me nuts so, if anyone has encountered this problem or knows how to solve it I would appreciate an answer. Thanks a lot.

YESSSSS!!! thank you so much! i went to the login items and there was some weird thing in there... not even checked to start up but i deleted it and now, classic doesn't start on it's own. I really appreciate your help a lot! Thank you!

  • Classic freezes or stalls when started in OS X 10.4.6

    Hello,
The classic environment freezes or stalls when it is started from OS X 10.4.6. In the expanded classic window pane, the smiling mac on the grey background appears, then the "welcome to Mac OS" appears (Mac OS 9.1). The blue progress bar at the top shows only a small sliver of blue on the left, and the progress bar does not advance at all. After many minutes, 10 or 15 so the classic window closes, perhaps a time-out limit, and has not started.
Mac OS X 10.4.6 was just recently installed on our Mac G4 from CD (4 CDs) rather than the OS X DVD, since we only have an internal CD drive. Our Mac is a 733 MHz PowerPC G4 (2.0) with 1 CPU; 512 MB SDRAM, 1 MB L3 cache, and 32 GB of available disk space. Let me know if other details would help with a diagnosis.
I have tried the suggestions given in the other forum articles that talk about the classic envirionment freezing or stalling such as:
blessed the Mac OS 9.1 system folder,
    rebuilt the desk top,
removed the OS 9.1 servers folder,
turned off extensions in the classic options,
    disconnected all external devices,
searched for the DivX folder, but didn't find it.
Are there other things I should try to permit classic to start from OS X?
Other forum articles seem to indicate that starting up classic in OS X allows older software to run in OS X. Is that true, or am I missing something?
By changing the start up disk to OS 9.1 the Mac will boot up directly to OS 9.1 (the previous OS used for many years) without any problem. Our current work around for older applications is to change the start up disk and boot up directly to OS 9.1.
Your advice and help is appreciated. My goal is to be able to start the classic Mac OS from OS X to run old applications like MS Office. Thanks for your help.
    Regards,
    Greg
Mac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   classic freezes during start up

    Hi Robbie,
Thanks for your reply to my question. I'll try to describe how I start classic in more detail. I have tried starting classic from the top menu bar icon (and from the classic system preferences form), and by trying to directly start an OS 9 application (like Word or Excel).
When I launch classic from the top menu bar icon a new window opens with the "smiling mac" on the grey background followed by the "welcome to Mac OS". At that point nothing else happens for a long time (no progress bar movement, no other forms or windows opening), in excess of 10 to 15 minutes. If the classic form closes after the long wait, the classic system preferences form still has a "start" button, so I presume that classic has not started. OS 9 applications do not start at that point. Should the progress bar move while classic is loading? I'm pretty sure that the blue progress bar in the classic window never moves, even when the classic window closes.
When directly opening an OS 9 application like Word or Excel the classic window opens, but again no change to the progress bar and the classic window stays open for a long time. The OS 9 application does not start.
Does this description help? Let me know if I can provide more details of what happens. I would be glad to try any tests you suggest, and report on the outcome, to help diagnose this problem. I can also try upgrading to OS 9.2.2; can you point me to an easy way for that upgrade? I'll check around the apple web site too.
Since the Mac can be booted up directly to OS 9.1 or OS X (by selecting the startup disk) it seems like there may be something that is interfering with classic being launched from OS X. Perhaps there are other files or preferences that can be disabled or removed in hopes of removing the interference and gettting classic to launch?
Thanks again for your help with this classic start up problem.
    Regards,
    Greg

  • Classic Freezes in start up!!

I am running a 15 inch powerbook, and when i go to play games that used classic, the classic bar comes up that says "classic starting using systems folder" but the status bar just stays on and doesn't advance, it is not frozen, just keeps it there.
I have already turned off extensions under system preferences, so that isn't it. Any other suggestions?????

I just ran that Mac OS 9 support installer on my G5. I noticed that if a System Folder already exists on the target volume, it installs "on top of" the existing System Folder. It does not give a choice to do a "clean" installation. That means that if there was something wrong with it, the problem may have been retained.
So if you want to try it one more time, you can:
Delete the existing System Folder, if there is nothing special about it that you want to keep.
    OR
Make a folder on the volume called anthing you want, like "Old System Folder," and drag the existing System Folder into that folder to keep until you decide to delete it.
Run the Mac OS 9 support installer again and another completely new System Folder should appear at the root (top) level of the target volume. Take a look in Finder to confirm.
Now, go back into System Preferences Classic panel and be sure to select THAT System Folder in the list box, not one that was previously installed. Click Start in that panel and see what happens.
If that still does not work, there is something else happening on the Mac OS X side. Since this is the forum for using Mac OS 9, you may want to go to the Mac OS X Tiger forum and ask the question again, or search for a similar situation to yours there.

  • "This file server is running on your machine." Message on starting Classic

I am having a problem with Classic starting up. When it is almost done loading, i get the message "This file server is running on your machine. Please access the volumes and files locally." The only option is Ok, but upon clicking it the message pops up again. At first it would crash Classic after about three times. After disabling file sharing in OS9, it shows up about ten times before stopping, and Classic continues to run.
System specs are in the signature (the first one)

Have you ever had AppleShareIP installed on your OS 9 System?
When Mac OS X Server is installed, it tends to be perfectly happy with having the Server on the same machine.

I have a P55-A5312 laptop running on Windows 8.  I have the Classic Start 8, and recently the start menu icon hasn't been responding when I click on it.  It worked for a bit yesterday but now it isn't working again.
Two days ago, I tried a power reset.  That did little if anything.

Sally, try reinstalling Classic Start 8.

  • Classic doesn't start without problems !

I installed 10.4.4 on a G4 450 Cube which had already 9.2.2 with many OS 9 applications on it. Everything runs fine there is just a little problem...
When I start classic the little window opens, the bar ist running up to the half and then it says: the application i wanted to run on the server ( which server? ) is already on the local disk and I have to quitt it with an OK. After I did so, the bar runs almost up to the right edge and then it asks again and I have to quitt and ask and quitt and ask.... for about 15 times. Then classic starts and runs without problems, also the applications and both systems seem to be stable.
How can I get rid of this symptom ???

I did not get any comments as my question was not clearly expressed. I have posted a new, clearer question.
