Classic stopped working

My Classic environment won't start up all of a sudden. I was using it fine last week. I can't remember if I have changed anything about the computer -- maybe installed software updates and that killed it?
I need it back -- does anyone know what I can do? I'm running 10.4.10 on a g5. When I click the Classic app I need to run, the OS9 startup window appears, and the progress bar gets one little blip on it and hangs.
If I go to startup disk in System Preferences, I don't see an OS9 folder -- shouldn't there be one there?
thanks for any help!
Bob

Hi Bob,
Very odd indeed.
I'd start by getting out my install disc one and double click on "Install Applications and Classic support" and follow the on screen instructions.
Here's this also from Mac Help ;
"To install Classic support or additional bundled applications:
1 Back up your essential files, if possible.
2 Insert the "Additional Software & Apple Hardware Test" disc.
3 Double-click "Install Extra Software."
4 Follow the onscreen instructions to install Mac OS 9 and the
other applications"
Before I'd start this though I'd reboot and Zap the PRAM, then launch disk utility and run repair permissions and then click on my Hd/File/Fix OS 9 permissions.
Regards,
Michael
BTW, there will be no start up disk in the Start up disks section of System preferences for Classic OS 9..
You need a OS 9 System folder located in HD/9 System folder..

  • My Ipod Classic Stopped Working

    Hey..
please help me, my Ipod Classic stopped working for a 3H And i can't use it
    or turn it off ..
    what's the solution ?
    Thanky you

I am having a similar problem at the moment. My ipod is a 20g and fairly new. It has been skipping through all of the songs as though they can't be played. I have soft reset it on numerous occasions and most of the time it has worked. But now I have reset it through itunes for about the fifth time and it won't work. All I have on screen now is the apple symbol and I can't get anywhere. I have updated itunes and reset my ipod after removing all of the music. It seems to be corrupted somehow. Is there any software I can use to wipe it or possibly defrag it other than what is available through itunes?
My computer can recognise the ipod but itunes won't.

  • Please help Ipod Classic stopped working

My Ipod Classic has stopped. I followed previous instructions. to get to the white screen and the hard-drive and now instead of the red cross it says
SMART DATA  (Cant open device)  ERROR! Diag Holt
    What do I do now?

Did you try a hard reset?  To do this, make sure the hold switch is in the Off position.  Then press and hold both the Select/Center and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.  This may or may not work the first time around, so give it a couple of tries if necessary.

  • Hold button on ipod classic stopped working

    Hi
I know this is an old problem and I've looked into resolving the problem, but
... OK, at the moment unless using a docking station functionality is zero. Genius Bar suggested using a remote control with headphones which I guess would work, but is there something that allows you to access 'menu' as well as just the basic functions /PLAY/FF/VOL/etc when on-the-go?
    thanks in advance!

    Most likely, water damage.
You can try putting your iPod in a tupperware, half filled (maybe half inch) with rice grains, close the cover for about a week.
If you have done this, as soon as it got wet, higher chances of success, now looks like the water moisture is getting to the LCD screen.
Then you can always bring it to Apple Genius bar, for a an overhaul. (may cost you half the price of a new iPod classic.)

  • Classic just stopped working?!

Hey guys, i mainly only use os 9 classic for my canon scanner & recently classic has just stopped working. whenever i try to start it, it just sits there in the loading screen, ive left it for a long time & nada. also the other ***** is that canon hasnt made any os x software for this particular scanner, just drivers. ive tried reinstalling that driver & of course hasnt made a difference
any ideas of what to do? is there a way of reinstalling classic? would that solve it?
    thanks ahead of time

thanks again charles. i tried to repair the disk, but
everytime i would verify the disk it would find a
problem (it wouldnt tell me what), but it wouldnt
allow me to repair, it was fogged. i tried restarting
with the install disk & still couldnt find anything.
This sounds as though you have a serious directory problem. If you don't have Disk Warrior, or if DW can't fix the problem, then I'd back everything up. If necessary, buy an external hard drive and get hold of Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!. Either CCC or SD! will make a complete backup of your system to another volume.
Once you've made the backup, reformat the original volume and restore the backup to it.
so i checked on the apple help site for fixing
classic & all i did to fix classic was reselecting
the system i wanted to start up my computer in the
startup disk menu in system pref. now it works,
    messed up.
    'Messed up', how?
also i ended up calling apple on getting my computer
to repair my disc & the woman on there told me that
software isnt included in the one year warranty, ***?
Apple has never included software in their one year warranty.
how is hardware which costs money to replace is
covered, but software isnt? it doesnt cost anything &
they should be just as resposible for software as
they are hardware. sorry for the little rant, its
    just crazyness
    No-body warrants software.
    so thanks again charles
    no problem.

thanks a million think that might have worked. I did it and seemed like nothing happen so before a threw it against the wall, lol, i plugged it into the computer via usb and it started to charge.
Now this leads me to another issue i have had before, that is itunes not recognizing my ipod when it is plugged in. That is what is happening now, and this has happen before. The solution i have had before was to shut down MAC and restart, which is very annoying when trying to add a pod-cast to ipod and leave the house. Any thoughts???

  • I unplugged my iPod Classic without ejecting it first. It played for many hours after this but then it just stopped working and it has a blackened screen that seems to say paused. Wondering if there is a way to get it to work again.

    Hey hughborg25,
I found an article that can help you troubleshoot when an iPod becomes unresponsive or the screen goes black:
iPhone, iPad or iPod touch: Not responding or does not turn on
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3281
I would go through all the steps listed there, and the issue should be resolved by the end.

To give you something, I need something too, like
How old is the Ipod? (if it is still under warranty, then send it to Apple service shop)
Are you running Windows iTunes or Mac iTunes?
What do you see on the iPod screen?
My guess is, your iPod classic is more than 2 years old and out of warranty, and the hardisk has gone kaput! and need to be replaced.
    Have a nice day!
