Classic vs EPMA

Hi All,
Why many implementations will be Classic application oriented than EPMA ? For that matter even HFM also. Were there any significance performance issues exists in EPMA ? What are the draw backs of EPMA over Classic Application creation
Thanks,
PVR

In 11.1.1.3 we did see some significant performance issues when rebuilding dimensions. We had a customer dimension of approximately 28,000 members that we needed to refresh daily. Using EPMA it was several hours for the first load and up to six hours for refreshes. Performing the same process using outline loader and classic was a consistent 10 minutes. We did log an SR and run it through the support process hoping that future releases would optimize this.
Between the above issue and some problems with Planning loosing connectivity with Calculation manager we went with the rock-solid Classic vs. new fangled EPMA/Calculation manager. When you have a tight deadline and no room for error testing new things and dealing with those kinds of issues is a non-starter.
Your mileage may vary and be prepared to have an alternative if you need to change. Rebuilding an app from EPMA into classic isn't the end of the world, just if you need a couple of days to do it and you are doing it on short notice it's sometimes not fun.
Other folks thoughts?

  • Classic to EPMA automation

    Hello,
Can someone tell me if there is a utility for automating the Classic to EPMA conversion instead of using "Transform classic to EPMA" in workspace?
    Thanks

    Hi there
I don't think there is a utility that will do this. I can't think of a way unless you scripted the EPMAFileGenerator.exe to run or something like that.
Why do you need to automate the conversion? In my experience this is a one time activity that doesn't take too long..
    Thanks

  • Hyperion Planning Classic or EPMA?

    Hi,
We are creating new Hyperion Planning applications (11.1.2.2.300) and it is time to decide if we should continue using Hyperion Planning Classic or move to
EPMA. We are already using Calculation Manager, but not Dimension and Application Library. Currently, we have DRM installed and we bring all Metadata
from DRM into Oracle tables. We are using ODI to load data/Metadata from Oracle tables to Hyperion Planning / Essbase. I heard that Hyperion Planning Classic may go way in near future. I'm not aware of any ODI KM for EPMA but I know that EPMA has improved a lot recently. Any advice or comments on either way will be great appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Caio

It is definitely not going away, if you take 11.1.2.3 there was lots of new functionality introduced for classic and not so much for EPMA, if you look at Oracle's cloud solution it is classic only as it runs on Linux and no windows which EPMA still requires.
If you are already using DRM and ODI ask yourself what benefit you will get from EPMA, if you feel you will gain from EPMA then try it out, it is long old debate classic vs EPMA which everybody has there owns views on so there is no definite right or wrong but I know from experience which one I prefer

  • Datasource set to NONE after classic to EPMA conversion

    Hello everyone.
We recently transformed a classic Hyperion application to EPMA.
Everything seems to be alright and the application is working fine after conversion.
However, when performing application deploys, we've noticed that the datasource appears to be set to NONE, as seen in the following image:
    https://c69ee7db-a-62cb3a1a-s-sites.googlegroups.com/site/ktratsites/Home/deploy_none.png
The system seems to be respecting the actual datasource that we set up for this application (name it APPDSCR), but the "Deploy" dialog window shows this NONE.
Should we be worried about this?
Is this a known issue of transformed applications?
Is there a way so the actual datasource is shown again instead of NONE?
    Thank you.
    Best regards,

    Hi again.
I'm finding a new issue related to this topic.
The application we transformed from Classic to EPMA exists in two environments: DEV and PRO.
It happened the PRO application was updated with new dimension members, hence the DEV application should be updated, too, so we decided to perform a migration from APPNAME PRO to APPNAME DEV. Everything seems ok as of this point.
I exported the EPMA local dimensions (all dimensions are local in these applications) from APPNAME PRO, then proceeded to import them in APPNAME DEV.
When I tried to redeploy APPNAME DEV, I got an error message. The log reads:
[21-mar-2013 12:20:00]: An Exception occurred during Application deployment.: You cannot change the Default Currency after deploying. You must select USD as the Default Currency before redeploying the application.
This makes no sense at all. The default currency for both applications has allways been ARS. However, the system shows the deployed application's default currency is USD. I'm working this via SR with Oracle.
I run a diagnostics test on both applications, and both failed the "Deployed status but not in product" test, as seen here:
    https://sites.google.com/site/ktratsites/Home/diagnostics.png?attredirects=0
I made a dummy move and chose "Retrieve potential deployed locations". This allowed the correct datasource to be shown in the "deploy application" dialog box instead of NONE, but didn't resolve the problem.
BTW, FinFu, the applications do not exists anymore in Classic Planning Administration.
All in all, I don't know whether all this verbose clarifies something to you or not.

  • Classic Vs EPMA and Calc Manager in 11.1.2.3

I'm trying to remember if it is possible to use the Classic mode in 11.1.2.3 or if you are finally forced to EPMA and Calc Manager? Does anyone know?
We are looking at doing an upgrade and want to make sure we pick the right version.
    Thanks

You can use Classic metadata management in 11.1.2.3. You can also use EPMA with "Classic" rules if you'd like.

  • Classic to EPMA and alias

    All,
Version is 11.1.2.1 with EPMA patch 11804477.
Intially there are no EPMA applications and no dimesnions in Shared library / application library.
When transformed classic application to epma, dimensions are migrated as local dimensions. Then right click dimensions and selected Share Dimension option to migrate them to Shared dimension library (master view). Once the dimension is shared, Aliases of members getting lost.
Tried to share the alias dimension before any other dimension. Still didn't work. Is there a particular sequence or is it expected. Any help greately appreciated.
    Thanks
    Krishna

Jusdt out of curiosity is the Alias missing in the shared library or when you view the alias property in the appview? Have you activated all associations in the appview? If you do so does this bring in the property? If I recall right sometimes the associated properties aren't available except in the appview and with the correct associations activated.

  • Migrating planning Application EPMA to classic

    Hi Everyone,
I've already googled this question, but did not find any important information. So, can anyone help me on that ?
I've been requested to convert a Hyperion Planning app from EPMA structure to a Planning Classic.  I've already know that there is a wizard in workspcae where you can  convert from Classic to EPMA, but I'm not sure if is possible to convert it back to classic.
Is it possible using this wizard  or there is no way to do that ?
    Thanks in advance
    Regards

There is no wizard to convert it back, in the planning system database, HSPSYS_PROPERTIES there is a property_name called EDIT_DIM_ENABLED, if it is in EPMA mode this is set to false, in classic it is set to true.
In that table the properties are per application so you need to find the application id = HSPSYS_APPLICATION and match match it to the property_id and this will give the info you need to change the value.
    Any changes require a restart.
Please note this does not remove it from EPMA you have to work out a process to remove that e.g. delete the app, recreate, etc
    Cheers

  • Classic app changed to epma application without warning

    Hi!
I have an application which was initially created as classic planning application. (version 931)
Today when I opened this application I noticed that dimension members were not editable any more, which led me to think that application has "evolved" to an epma application.
I do not remember having upgraded application (have just checked if it was upgradeable, even today it is upgradeable???).
When I browse application library this application is not visible anywhere there. So it seeems that it is not an epma application, but it does not have the classic application features either.
Can I somewhere check whether this application is currenty classic or epma?
Is it possible to copy epma application to classic application using copy app (just wild question...) I think i already know the answer, but has anybody tried?
    kind regards,
    user637777
    Edited by: user637777 on 10.12.2009 5:24

Have you eve used the EPMA file generator as I have seen it change the classic settings so it looks to be an EPMA application without warning.
You can revert it back go into the planning system tables.
First look in the HSPSYS_APPLICATION, note down the APP_ID for the planning app in question.
Next go into the table HSPSYS_PROPERTIES, look at column PROPERTY_NAME = EDIT_DIM_ENABLED for the ID you had in the step above, change the PROPERTY_VALUE from false to true.
    Restart Planning application service.
    Ok?

  • Can you help me on classic11.1.2.1 to EPMA conversion?

    Hi,
can you help me on classic to EPMA conversion?
we want to convert essbase classic to EPMA and want to maintain Account dimension as shared library,
plz anyone can help on this and let me know the procedure and related documents to refer.

    [email protected]

    Hi,
Refer to http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17236_01/epm.1112/epma_admin/epma_app_upgrade.html . In case you do not see the essbase app in the list of classic apps, you might have to install studio.
It is quite straight forward therwise. Once the application is converted, you can go to the application library and deploy the new EPMA app.

  • Pros and cons of EPM and Classic Application.

    Hi All Experts,
can any one tell me what are the pros and cons if create EPM Application
and pros and cons if we create Classic Planning Application
this is really urgent we have to submit this to our client as soon as possible

    Hi,
The main difference between using of classic and EPMA is I think hidden in the first letter of EPMA. EPMA is for Enterprises where multiple performance management applications are considered applicable. When you have an HFM application, a planning application, a performance scorecard application, a couple of essbase cubes around and lots of reports pulling data from all these, sharing data and metadata becomes crucially important. And no mistake, classic planning is as good as EPMA planning and easier to handle, however, if your company or client is thinking of having a total EPM solution in place, then EPMA is the right choice. However, since you can always convert your classic app to EPMA but you've got only one bullet to fire, it might be wise to stick with classic application until your client/company starts imagining that sort of ambitious goal.

  • Upgrading to 11.1.2.3 - Enable EPMA or wait?

Hi all, please forgive me if my first post on the forum is a little newbish
I'm in the process of upgrading EPM 11.1.2 to 11.2.3.3 and I'm hemming and hawing between whether or not to use this opportunity to upgrade from classic to epma.  I'm envisioning three HFM applications that share some common dimensionality (figure in the 50-75% range of commonality), a planning application for each of those applications, and probably in the neighborhood of a dozen essbase cubes that access various and sundry other data sources.  The users ping pong between different smartview connections (to each of the HFM & planning applications) so its important that each of those applications is maintained consistently, so that when there are changes to the metadata (for example) in one application that the other applications be updated as well (if required, as not all dimensionality is the same).  My understanding is that EPMA will make that process a little easier on me.
However, one of my colleagues in IT who works on the Oracle GL side of the company informs me that EPMA may already be on its way out the door and that it may be prudent for me to hold off and stay on classic for the time being.  Unfortunately he didn't have a lot of information on this, not even the name of what the eventual replacement may be or a release date.
Can anyone recommend some possible options for me?
    Thanks

    Hi there,
That's a point for a huge discussion... "EPMA may already be on its way out the door"
I thought that it is the other way round? That Oracle aims to stop using classic application and move everything to EPMA...

  • EPMA Period Dimension - cannot move Base members

I am trying to move Periods out of Quarters and under YearTotal in an already deployed application in EPMA (Planning app).
I want to have YearTotal above Jan-Dec, and Q1-Q4 as Dynamic Calcs with months shared below.
This is all well and good in planning classic where you can just delete the quarters and the months fall under year total.
In EPMA, because this change was not made in advance of deployment, when I make it now I get a validation fail about
"Base Time Periods cannot be moved after an application has been deployed". Fair Enough - if that is the rule then fine but hopefully there is a workaround.
So I moved them back to the original structure, and now I am getting double the number of validation errors - one for moving, and another one for removing !!
Rolled back the EPMA database to resolve the above but my question is has anyone figured a way to move months post deployment ?
    Thanks,
    Dave

I had the same problem and I found a solution.
1/. You have to transform the EPMA application to classic following these instructions:
    - Connect to the planning application, in the top menu click on "Administration > Application > Properties"
    - Add the property "EDIT_DIM_ENABLED", and set the value to "true"
    - Restart Planning Service
    - Connect to the "Application Library", right click on your application and select "Diagnostics"
    - Check the option “Deployed but classic application in product”, click on “run selected test”, then into the “Test Detail” part check the option “delete from EPMA only” and finally click on "apply".
2/. Connect to the Planning application you make your change into the period dimension. ("Administration > Manage > Dimensions")
3/. Finally you transform your Classic to EPMA application following these instructions:
    - Connect to the workspace and use the wizard to convert your classic to epma application ("Navigate > Administer > Transform Classic to EPM Architect")
    - Connect to the "Application Library", right click on your application and select "Diagnostics"
    - Check the option "Deployed but not in product" click on “run selected test”, then into the “Test Detail” part check the option "Retrieve" and finally the option "Syncronize".
    Hope it helps you.
