Classic won't start under Tiger

When I try to start classic, it hangs as soon as the startup "Smiley Mac" screen appears"
My computer will boot from OS9 system folder, but not start classic either from system preferences or automatically if I'm in Tiger.
I've fixed OS9 permissions from Disk Utility, turned off all extensions, rebuilt desktop, checked that there's only one OS9 on drive...what's next?
Thanks, mavens!

Ok...at this point, we know the system will boot to 9, but not startup 9 from inside of X - rather, it starts, then hangs after the splash screen. I'm back to extensions.
I know you said you had disabled them once; I come back to the same conclusion for a couple of reasons.
If it were a disk error, bad block, or corrupted (os9) system file, then it is most probable that booting the machine to 9 would also fail. Since that works, and we know extensions are the first thing that loads on power on...
Also, I did have this same problem when I first switched to X (about v10.0.4). But it's been so long since I resolved that issue, I cannot recall which one(s) I disabled. I am using the same HD and OS9 system folder I used then (moved the drive to this machine), and have not toyed with the extension settings since resolving the problem.
Rather than use the all/no extension option in the X Classic control pane, I would boot the machine to 9, run extension manager, and select the "all off" option. This does not rely on Xs ability to disable them on the fly, and will disable any extensions that load before extensions manager does (there are a few) and is permanent (until you turn them back on.)
Reboot to X, then try to run Classic.
If it works, then rerun extension manager and select "OS9.2 extensions only" which will not load any 3rd party extensions.

  • OS 9 won't start under Tiger

    Hi,
My Classic environment will no longer start under Tiger, although I can boot from it independently. I suspect my recent maintenance activities may be to blame. I have three internal drives, all with Tiger and one also with OS 9.2. Recently the boot disc showed signs of failing: I caught it in time, imaged the disc and replaced it. After a bit of fiddling with the remade disc I could start from it. Unfortunately I can't recall whether OS9 has ever worked since, but I think it has. I don't use it often.
I have tried booting under Tiger with extensions off and also moving and replacing the Finder so that it is 'blessed', both without success. I thought about reinstalling but I get a message saying I can't install over a newer OS.
    All help gratefully received!

  • Classic won't start, can't upgrade, and other problems...

There's something not quite right with my Mac, and I can't quite pinpoint it. Because of this, I'm not even certain I'm posting this in the right forum! Here's the situation:
I have a PowerMac G4, upgraded with a an extra hard drive, an ATI Radeon Pro graphics card, a Sonnet Duet G4 Dual 1.8GHz processor, and (as of today, prior to this 10.4.7) am running OSX 10.4.8.
When I got the machine, it came with OS 9.1 installed. I later upgraded to 9.2.2, and then eventually to OSX. My Classic system folder stayed at 9.2.2
About 10 days ago I installed the Sonnet processor upgrade. In order to do so, I had to rejig my system a bit, as the installer for the upgrade only works in 9.2 and not Classic (yeah, bad call on Sonnet's part).
I partitioned my Back-Up drive, and installed 9.2 on it, installed the software for the processor, and then the processor itself. After checking everything worked, I then unpartitioned my Back-Up drive and removed OS9.2.
Although the processor works fine, and has doubled the speed of most tasks, ever since it was installed, I have been prone to crashes. Most often when working with large files in various applications such as Photoshop.
Also, Classic won't start now. I hardly ever use Classic these days, only for one or two tiny programs I could live without, but the fact that it refuses to start is niggling me. I reinstalled OS9.1 from my original disk, and now I can't upgrade to 9.2: all that happens is I get a message saying that I have 9.1 and that it is recommended I upgrade to 9.2! But Classic won't open, so I can't upgrade to 9.2.
The next thing that's started happening is that my broadband connection keeps dropping. This never happened before. This is happening so frequently it's really annoying; the only thing that cures it is a restart, but restarting 10 times a day isn't funny. I'm using an Alcatel Speedtouch ADSL modem. This has worked fine for over a year.
Yesterday I tried setting up a wireless connection with a Belkin router, replacing my USB modem, so my wife can use her Windows laptop to surf from the same broadband connection (my Mac doesn't need to be wireless enabled itself). But this hasn't worked, even though we followed the instruction manual exactly. I suspect that the reason this hasn't worked was because of the underlying problem on my Mac, whatever it is. I've gone back to using the Speedtouch modem to connect to the internet for now.
I've just today done a complete system reinstall of OSX 10.4, and downloaded the upgrade to 10.4.8, in an effort to solve this. Unfortunately, my Mac still seems to be in the same state and it hasn't solved anything. Classic still won't open, the connection still keeps dropping, and I'm almost at the point of kicking the **** thing through a window! Please, has anyone got any bright ideas? I don't know where to start....
    G4 Digital Audio   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi, thanks for responding.
I've made a couple of changes, double-checked everything, and I have to say that now 10.4.8 has been on my machine for a few days, it's a lot more stable. No crashes. Maybe it just needed to "settle in", ha ha. I also got a router and went wireless, something I needed to do so my wife could use her laptop to get online. This seems to have solved the connection dropping.
So the only thing left is not being able to open Classic. I think maybe you're right, and the new processor doesn't like Classic. But, to tell the truth, I hardly ever use Classic anymore, and I can live without it. So I think I'll leave everything as it is for now, unless something major happens. I spent nearly £500 on the processor upgrade, and it has doubled the speed of my Mac: I really don't want to have to take it out:-)

  • Classic won't open in Tiger 10.4.6

I purchased Tiger 10.4.6 from the Apple Store to fix another problem and installed it over 10.3.9. The first problem was solved, but now I can't open Classic. I've spent 4 days reading other posts related to this new problem with launching Classic, but nothing has worked. Classic does not come on the new single Tiger DVD I purchased. And I don't have access to my original OS disc that came with Dual 500 PowerPC G4. Classic 9.1 opened fine in 10.3.9. I have 9.1 installed on a second hard drive and I used to start 9.1 from there. With Tiger 10.4.6, the Classic window comes up and says Classic is starting, then just hangs. I have tried turning extentions off, rebuilding Classic desktop, but no change. Can I fix this issue without a OS9 disc to reinstall from? I downloaded the 9.2.1 update, but can't install it because Classic won't open. Any ideas? Thanks for your time.

This is a similar problem I was having Read This: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=531316&tstart=0
I was upgrading to tiger and just copied the the OS 9 System folder and the applications folder (Mac OS 9) to the new comp and well see for yourself, but read the messege board before trying. Later

  • Classic Won't Start from OS 10.2.8

    Hello all,
I am having a problem with one of the machines in my office. Classic just won't start. I tried rebuilding the desktop and repairing permission but, to no avail. I can restart the machine from the OS 9 folder wihout a problem but from OS X classic will attempt to start and then hang. No startup screen nothing.
    In a word....HELP.
    Thanks

OK this isn't a permenent fix but it will work so you can open up Classic Applications and Files.
    1. Go into System Preferences.
    2. Under the System Section click the Classic Button.
    3. In this window that comes up click the Advanced Tab at the top.
    4. Inthe drop down select it to "Turn Off Extensions"
    5. Now click "Start Classic"
It should start up fully and now you can go about opening any Classic files or Applications.

  • Classic won't start up PLEASE HELP!!!

I am using OS X on a powerbook G4 and classic will not start up. THe status bar comes on but does not move, it remains in the same postion, not freezing.
I have left it for over an hour and still nothing...
Does anyone have advice on why classic is not starting up?

I don't know for sure, but it may be an extensions conflict. Did you change anything in the System Folder lately.
If you go to the Advanced tab in the System Preferences Classic panel, you should see an option to start Classic with extension off. If that works, you'll have to do some detective work to figure out which non-Apple extension is causing the problem.
If you only use Classic under Mac OS X (you don't boot directly into Mac OS 9 anymore) there are ways to optimize Classic System Folder. If you do a Google search on "optimize classic mac" you should see some web sites. The one on LowEndMac.com is here.
    http://www.lowendmac.com/practical/02/0507.html
You can also create a separate "for Classic under Mac OS X only" System Folder (and put it anywhere, even on a disk image), if you want to keep a bootable "fully enabled" System Folder.

  • OS 9 Classic won't start

I'm trying to use Hypercard on OS 10.3.9 slot loading iMacs but Classic OS 9 won't start. All indications are that Classic is starting but the progress bar stalls near the end. There are 7 machines in my lab of 27 having this problem. All of the machines are essentially the same with regards to OS, applications, RAM, storage, etc. All machines have OS 9.2.2 installed with all of the OS 9 updates.

    Thanks for the input.
I removed and replaced the sys 9 folder with one from a functional computer but classic would not recognize the new one. I've been working with Macs for nearly 15 years now and have never had luck attempting to simply replace the system folder.
Disabling the extensions on classic startup did work as a work-around but in the end I re-installed OS 9 and its updates to take care of the problem. I really didn't want to take the time to search out the culprit extension.

  • Tomcat 5 service won't start under w2k

Has anyone else had trouble getting the Tomcat 5 service to start under Windows 2000 or Windows XP? I have tried installing the service using the installer .exe and also manually by downloading the zip file and using the service.bat file in the bin directory. I can install the service, but when I attempt to start it I receive the following message:
Could not start the Apache Tomcat service on Local Computer.
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.
I have set the JAVA_HOME and CATALINA_HOME environment variables properly. I can start and stop Tomcat just fine by using startup.bat and shutdown.bat. If I can start Tomcat by using startup.bat, what is stopping me from starting it as a service? I must be missing some configuration setting or something...
I am having the same problem on 3 different computers, 2 w2k machines and 1 XP Pro machine. I have tried both Tomcat 5.0.18 and 5.0.19, same result on both.

  • Classic won't start in OS X

When I try to start Classic, it gets hung-up with the Welcome to OS9 message. I found information that said I needed to upgrade to 0S9.2.2 to fix this problem (I was running 9.1). When I try to install 9.2.1, it launches Classic, which gets hangs. Can I install 9.2.1 without launching Classic? Will upgrading to 9.2.2 fix my problem?

I'm having the same problems as you, except what you did to fix it won't work for me, since my computer cannot boot up in 9.x (it's a new G4 1.67 PowerBook).
It boots to the screen where normally extensions start going across the bottom, but that's where it hangs, and turning off extensions doesn't make any difference.
My PowerBook even came with an install CD that updated my System to 9.2.2, and said it was successful, but it still won't boot.
I suppose I could delete the System Folder and completely install a fresh new one, but I was hoping to avoid that because I have so many preferences in there that I need to run my software, and I don't want to have to spend a lot of time copying the preferences and extensions over, etc.
I tried repairing permissions and rebuilt my desktop, but that didn't help either. There are no error messages given by Classic -- it just hangs. I don't get it, because I copied the same system folder to a FireWire disk and it boots up fine on my old G4 550 mhz PowerBook. But even though it will boot that computer, it hangs during boot-up if you're loading it within the Classic environment.
I've had this problem since upgrading to Tiger.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Need help--Classic won't start

I still have a couple of OLD apps that require System 9. When I attempt to open either of them I get the "Classic is starting" progress bar, but it never quite finishes. I can start Classic okay with extensions off but then I can't use the printer, and my old copy of Photoshop Elements won't load no matter what I try. I get an error message when I try to run "Install Applications and Classic Support" from my installation disk. I really don't want to part with the $$ for System 10.4 AND two new pieces of software right now. Any ideas?

If Classic is booting with extensions off, that means that some preference or extension or control panel or control strip module has a problem. You can use Extensions Manager to turn off most of them and start up and see if the problem recurs. If so, then one of the extensions etc that you didn't turn off is the problem. If not, then one of those you did turn off is the problem. If you still have the problem, make a note of the extensions you've already turned off, and turn off a few more and try again. If you don't have the problem, turn on a few extensions and try again. Repeat until you have identified the problem extension.

  • IPod Classic won't start or connect

My iPod Classic 80gig is acting weird. The screen was black like it was dead, then I connected it to the computer and the Apple becomes somewhat visible. Then it goes dark and the Apple becomes visible again for about 2 seconds. I can hear a very faint whine then a click, and it starts over. It's like it's trying to start but can't. The computer doesn't recognize that it is connected. I've downloaded the most recent version of iTunes and rebooted, no changes. Now I have no idea what to do.
    Thanks

Unfortunately, you seem to have fallen victim to recent Itunes updates as has so many others. Peruse through the Ipod Classic threads and there will be loads of additional complaints just like yours. And, just as unfortunate, there aren't any solutions at this time.

  • Classic won't start

Hello all, hope you can help me.
Classic stopped opening. Poof. It used to open just fine, but now nothing. It's not hanging or crashing, it's simply not starting at all. No little startup window, I've repaired permissions, I've tried starting with extensions turned off, I've run Disk Warrior. Still nada. I can use 9.2.2 as my startup disk and boot directly into that OS, but can't get Classic open from OSX.
This has been the latest in general funkyness going on in my system. Most of the stuff in the past has been pretty benign, but this hinders my ability to get work done. This started last week shortly after trying to install printer drivers for Epson Stylus CX4200, which caused all the content on the right side of my menu bar (airport status, sound, time, etc) to disappear. Uninstalled those drivers and the menu bar is fine (although not in other users). Was able to install those drivers with no problem into my PowerBook and now can only print over the network with the printer plugged into the PB.
Tried running Printer Setup Repair and rid myself of all the printer files to start from scratch, as was suggested by Epson's support, but haven't gotten that to help at all.
Suggestions to fix one or all of these problems much appreciated. Should I Archive and Reinstall or am I beyond what that will repair?

As I said, permissions repair of the 9 folder was not too hopeful. There are other things going on with your system.
It could be bad blocks that have corrupted system files on the current hard drive. It could be a bad install of QuickTime or iTunes or who knows what??????
If it was just happening on your user then I'd say it was a preference problem but you say that things work, after a fashion, on your user but not the other users.
If it were me, I'd at least have a boot cd/dvd so that if the entire system goes out you can still get things up and running and I'd be backing up user files.

  • Leaping from 9.1 to 10.4.6 and classic won't start

I cannot get 9.1 to get past the Welcome page in Classic mode on 10.4.6 (just installed). I can boot 9.1 on its own. Can I install 9.0 onto the machine and upgrade to 9.2? Is 320 mgs of ram sufficient to run classic on 10.4?

Re: installation of Tiger on a G4 running OS 9.1
I installed Tiger on a G4 running OS 9.1. Even though my system folder contains "Classic" and "Classic Support," I now find that I cannot bring in any of my old OS 9.1 files. When I attempt to bring in 9.1 files, I get a panel stating:
"You have Mac OS 9.1 installed. It's recommended that you upgrade to OS 9.2."
After I click on "OK," I view a "Mac OS 9 startup window" with a thermometer showing the progress by a blue line. The blue line grows to about 1 mm of its total 78 mm maximum, but shows no progress beyond 1 mm, even after an hour or so.
I assume that IF my system folder contained OS 9.2 I would be able to download my OS 9 files.
MY ATTEMPTS TO UPGRADE TO OS 9.2 HAVE THUS FAR FAILED. I have downloaded (for free):
    OS 9.2.1 at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120030 (82 MB),
    and OS 9.2.2 at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75186 (21.3 MB).
The icons for these updates now appear on my desktop.
However, clicking on the icons brings up INSTALLER icons. Clicking on the installer icons results in the panel described above with its frozen thermometer.
I described the above problem over the telephone to an Apple consultant. He thought that my hard-drive was probably defective and that I should:
    a. save vital stuff on the disk,
    b. reinitialize the disk, and
    c. reinstall the saved stuff plus OS 10.4.6.
Unfortunately all this failed to change the behavior indicated above. I still can't access my OS 9 files.
I should greatly appreciate receiving any suggestions.
