Classical Music is Searched by Composer-How?
Could it be that no one at Apple has ever had formal music education? In Verion 11 they (for some unfathomable reason) took away the Power Search option. Now you are left with Artist and Title and somekind of ranking. I have a news break for Apple, classical music is searched by COMPOSER and is OPERA in many cases. If you can't return the composer option, then dump the Classical category. It's essentially useless. Apple-people, you may cyber-geniuses but you apparently know little about music. How could they have overlooked this?
In the SONGS or PLAYLISTS lists view, turn on the Column Browser (View Menu, Column Browser) and then select Composers.

Shop for music by searching for composer
I would like to purchase music by searching for composers. The Power Search only gives us Title and Artist. For example, searching for "p.f. sloan" from the Search iTunes Store field at the top right of the iTunes window, one of the albums shown is by Herman's Hermits - but which song is the one written by P.F. Sloan? We used to have the capability to see the composer column in the search results in a prior version of iTunes, but no more. Now you only get Name, Album, Artist, Time, Popularity and Price columns - they've dumbed it down.

Cannot delete composer field in iTunes - so cannot use it to search my classical music collection !
To search my classical music collection easily within iTunes, I delete the composer field for all non-classical music. This works nicely on my Mac and on my old iPod. However, when I sync with my newish iPhone and iPad - the composer is still listed ! I chatted to Apple support and they said this was known behaviour and not a bug.
The failure for a composer deletion to sync, means that I cannot easily search my classical music - instead I have to wade through millions of non-classical composers in my collection (I search the non-classical music by using the artist field).
I think others have had this problem judging by other fora. I wondered if anyone knows of a sneaky fix, or whether Apple intend to correct this problem - which I'm guessing is alienating anyone who has sizeable classical music collection !
Thanks !I have exactly the same issue. First for me the issue is only related to songs purchased on iTunes. Second the field is updated as long as I put something there. But as soon as I delete it completely (and the same behaviour I have with other fields like track number) iPhone picks up original value. My guess is that for any blank filed it tries to get the value from iTunes store. It is extremely annoying as I also use composer filed for classical music only. The only solution to that problem is stop buying from iTunes store.

How do I stop iTunes from re-altering my sorting info for classical music?
Hi there. Hope someone can help. This is really irritating me now.
I have a lot of classical music in my iTunes library. Since very early on I have taken the decision to alter the Artist name in the sort field to the name of the composer rather than the performer as the listing of artists in classical music is so inconsistent (sometimes it's the orchestra, or the orchestra & conductor, or just the conductor, or the soloists, or it changes from track to track). I have kept the performer's details in the Comments box.
This has been absolutely fine until the last year or so, when I have noticed that music that I have downloaded from the iTunes store automatically reverts to the original sorting information even though I've changed it. So, for instance, I will have changed "Alfred Brendel" to "Mozart" as the Artist for a Mozart piano sonata. And even though I have changed the Artist, the Album Artist, the Sort Artist and the Sort Album Artist ALL to Mozart and synced that successfully to my iPhone, the next time that I launch iTunes or turn on my iPhone it will all mysteriously have reverted to the original sorting information. And I don't want that for classical music - fine for rock, pop etc., but classical music has a different set of priorities. I'm guessing this has something to do with iCloud, but how do I stop it happening? It is really tedious to keep altering these things. And some bizarre anomalies have appeared, such as some early Baroque music (Monteverdi) being labelled by iTunes as Electronic in the genre box!! Which it clearly isn't! But the same thing happens - I change the genre, but it changes back! Surely once I sort something it should stay sorted!
I'm sure there's a fantastically obvious explanation for this, and I apologise for missing it. But I don't know what to do . I have iTunes 11.3.1 and am running OS 10.9.4 (Mavericks).

Something in purchased media (I am pretty sure this has only happened with purchased media) is periodically checking back with the iTunes Store and resetting the tags in the iTunes library file but not in the actual media files (metadata are stored in both). I haven't seen a truly systematic diagnosis of the issue (I use an old iTunes and have no iTunes account so I can't test anything myself). There are temporary workarounds but tags will still revert after a time.

Workaround is to refresh tags so media file tags are re-read and used in library file.

How can I see my classical music sorted according to composers - individual works - performers ? This is much more useful than sorting according albums.
I have tried using the Grouping tag, writing Composer - Work - conductor there. But if I make a smart playlist, showing only Genre: "classical" and sorting according to Grouping, I see a line for each part in every work: one line for each movement of Mahler's 4th Symphony performed by George Solti, for instance.
What I am looking for is a way so that there is ONE line for each PERFORMANCE, ie, one line for Mahler's 4th Symphony performed by George Solti, below that one line for Mahler's 4th Symphony performed by William Mackerras, and so on.
Anyone found the golden solution? :-)

Spotlight classical music composer
"I guess no one listens to classical music anymore"
spotlight on the iphone does not search composer names which makes it useless for classical music and hence for me.
A internet search for this issue returns no results which leads me to this conclusion.
I hope this can be changed in the future.
or am I missing a setting?the only setting i can think of is
Settings -> General -> Search Results -> Music
if that is on and it's still not finding it suggest it at

there is a search in the ipod app itself... launch the ipod app and choose Artists then scroll down and a search will appear at the top... im not sure if if it syncs over more than artist, title, and album... -

In an this post I will describe how to perform a classic Mac OS search and give example results. You may perform the search with or without the spotlight database. This search falls under the smart folder implementation introduced with Tiger. I have done all my testing with Mac OS 10.4.11. I assume this will work with any version of Tiger or Leopard.
The results will be slightly different with a spotlight database on the partition and without a database on the partition. With a database, you will not see Unix hidden files. You may be able to use all of the spotlight special find features. I did not test much with the spotlight special fields. Without a database, using the special features nulls out the search and the "Search for" field seems to give the same result as using the name field.
This search technique was obscured by all the hoopla over spotlight. Authors of Tiger books avoided mentioning the Classic search interface. When I looked in Leopard books I noticed some authors put back information on the Classic search interface.
For testing I created these files
For testing I created a test "z-find" folder on my Macintosh-HD, containing files and folders with various attributes, then copied it over to my Spotless flash drive. This means both searches searched for the same file names.
I put these files on my Macintosh-HD and Spotless partitions.

There are some downsides. Initially, the search will find both visible and invisible Mac OS files. However, the search seems to get confused between visible and invisible files when you select the visibility option. It seems to get the visible correct when you use visible but when you add invisible things get confused. Sometimes it will find invisible files and sometimes it won't. I used both the Unix invisible files and the Mac OS X visiblity attribute.
In putting the same search in the upper right-hand-corner spotlight search and in the Search for field, I did not get the same results. The spotlight search returned a 182 items while the with Search for field returned 179 items. The Search for field seemed to miss items in the mail boxes. With the Search for search you could display spotlight results in the classic format.
I did a successful search on my fat32 flash drive.
Perform the Classic Mac OS search without the spotlight database.
If you turn off spotlight indexing on a volume and delete the spotlight index, then Mac OS Tiger reverts to the prior Mac OS search facility. In the preferences for spotlight, you let searching continued on the partition.
Here is what I did:
I installed the spotless application.

Question: I have a large classical music collection which I have uploaded into my IMAC computer. In the process many of the compositions were placed in needlessly duplicated genre categories ( a sonata turns in three SEPARATE "LP-Classical" categories, all 3 movements separated into different "LP-Classical" categories, one atop the other. How does one eliminate the foolish duplication and recombine the three movements into one composition? I am Desperate.

How to put my iPod classic music onto my iPad?
Hi I was wondering how to move my iPod classics music on to my new iPad. Thanks.
You will need to sync your music via your computer's iTunes, you can't connect an iPod to an iPad for copying music. If you don't have the music on your computer's iTunes then you should be able to copy music purchased from iTunes from the iPod via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases. For music from other sources (e.g. copied from CDs) then if you don't have it on your computer nor on a backup then there are some programs listed half-way down this page which should be able to copy them back from your iPod : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991

How do I keep movements of classical music together?
I've read that you can us "Grouping" to keep movements of classical music together, but I can find no information on how to do it. How do I mark certain tracks to always play together, even if I have the shuffle setting on? Thanks!

Can I create Composer sub-playlists in Classical Music?
I made the terrible mistake of upgrading to itunes 11. I've managed to mostly get it the way I want it with the exception of my Classical Music. In itunes 10 I had playlists for each composer under the Classical Music heading, which was the easiest way to sort things. Now I just have a list of tracks by composer, and it's impossible to navigate. I can't figure out a way to change this, and am thinking about reinstalling 10.7, but that looks painfully difficult - does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.
Use MetaZ to tag the files as TV Shows and the correct series and all other info.

Just downgraded back to iTunes 10.7 and copied music from ipod classic to itunes using houdini, but how do i copy the playlists from the ipod when itunes says that my ipod has been synced to another itunes library?

I think I am following -- I was able to upload to my iPhoto and all photos and videos are there that is a plus! I tried to create an Event in my iPhoto and put all of my photos in that event but for some reason, now my iTunes it not recognizing that Event in my iPhoto. It is not allowing me to import just that event at the moment but I may be doing something wrong. At least all of my pics and vids are in iPhoto so that is a plus and I know they are at least saved somewhere. Just for some reason, my iTunes it not locating the event that I created with only those photos.

Also, I had no clue that my iCloud could be backed up via cellular data! However, is this a new feature with the most updated iOS?? Unforutnatly I am like 2 iOS updates behind because I don't have enough storage on my phone. I still get the notification that my phone needs to be plugged in and connected to wifi in order to back up to the cloud :-(

I live in a small apartment and would like speakers in the bedroom and the living room. I like the "all-in-one" units. Would two of these sound better than one in the living room? I have a wireless modem from my phone company, but I have not hooked it up yet. What is AirPort and is it necessary to do what I want to do?
If your goal is to have a "whole home" audio experience, then using separate speakers in both the living room and bedroom would the proper approach.
If you decide to go the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) route, then you would need a minimum of two of these devices; one each for each room. The AX is a wireless Internet router with built-in audio. The AX's audio port supports both analog and digital optical audio output and will work with either self-powered speakers or an audio receiver that supports either connection type.
Classical music has very fine dynamics and, of course, the better the speaker, the better the sound reproduction. However, you don't need to go overboard as the AX is limited to the audio files that iTunes can play. -
I only have classical music downloaded into iTunes and the system does not apear to recognise familiar formats in this genre. With somehting like Bach or Shostakovich preludes, pauses between them are bearable: but I would never wish to shuffle them.However with opera, singing and orchestral pieces often run into each other without pause. Is it possible to link a set of what iTunes calls 'songs' into a seamless whole? Also with a symphony it would be extremely attractive to omil the Shuffle option altogether: it can be activated by mistake. Is there any way of telling it to go away?

Highlight the track(s), right-click, Get Info, and go to the Options tab. Put a checkmark on "Skip When Shuffling," the OK out.
