Classroom in a book CS5

Step 11 on page 114 states to "Then make sure Invert is selected..." I don't see any invert for me to select in the opened Layer Style dialog

My former account (AirForce2117) would not allow me to reply so I had to create a new account.
I bought the book, but there's no place to get corrections or post errors. The book (on page 114) states "The make sure Invert is selected...." When I go to the Select menu there is no "Invert". THere's is ,however, a "Inverse", but it is grayed out.
Here's the text that's in the book on page 114.
Select the Flower layer and choose layer > layer style > drop shadow. Then change the following settings in the structure. Capacity: 60%, distance: 13 pixels, spread: 9%. Make sure use global light is selected and that the blend mode is multiplied. Do not click okay.
With the layer style.dialog box still open, select satin on the left. Then make sure Insert is selected, and apply the following settings:
The book then shows a different layer style dialog than the one shown above.

A question based on classroom in a book cs5????

So i am new to flash and wanted to learn so i went and bought the classroom in a book for flash cs5 to self teach my self and well in chapter 6 it has you create a navagation menu. This menu has four boxes you can hover over and click ( i completed the whole lesson so its ready to go) and well when you go to test (command + enter) the flash movie plays but it plays on a custom loop over and over. I went to the top and went under control and deselected loop and it still does it and or it stops but then nothing is clickable.. what gives?? the lesson had me design the menu so you are able to hover over and have a box appear and then when you click it makes a sound and then after you click a new window pops up with info about that particular button and well when you test it it loops through at the blink of an eye and none of the buttons work and it just plays like a movie. I can email the file to get some answers but i just need some help so please if you have read this book or have the book you may know what i am talking about.

Photoshop CS5 Classroom in a book lesson 13

Hi,
Will somebody help me. In lesson 13 of Classroom in a book PS CS5 you learn to make html-files in PS CS5. After creating a file you are asked to pre-run it with Bridge. Rightclick and then open with a browser. I can't open this just made file (html) in Explorer or any other browser. My PS opens and is restricted to Word only..... What is wrong?? Has this something to do with PS or....???
I solved the problem for now by using Dreamweaver (Web-preview) instead but it's annoying....

The second suggestion you made gave: HTML listed "Windows explorer".
Do I have to change that to Photoshop CS5 or.....

I've bought the "Adobe Photoshop CS5 Classroom in a Book" and watched the videos. In the video training, chapter 3 Image Editing Concepts, Kelly announces that she will deal selections, puppet wraps, layers, masks. I haven't found the videos. Do you know where I can find those videos?

Thanks for the link but I actually have the book that shows the same thing except the links from amazon unfortunately doesn't show the tools and what they do. Thanks anyways. I was able to find a site that shows the list of tools like in the book but better in one single page. I just wish I knew what my professor meant by "concepts" and "skills" since there could be a variety of these but what?

Flash CS5 Classroom in a Book ebook (Kindle) tutorial files

Before I purchase Flash CS5 Classroom in a Book (Kindle edition) I want to be certain that the tutorial files included with the book's print edition are available online for the ebook edition. The location should have a URL with the form www.peachpit.com/ebook/ISBN, where in place of the preceding ISBN there's a number. For example for the Actionscript 3.0 Classroom in a Book the ISBN is 0321718062. According to the Kindle Store the ISBN for the aforementioned Flash CS5 CIB is 0321701801. However, placing that numeral in the above peachpit.com url doesn't yield the files. Okay, I have the same problem in relation to Photoshop CS5.1 I downloaded the Kindle for PC version, have tried several times to find the lessons, including three-four emails to Peachpit with no response over the period of several weeks. But am still stuck with a Kindle version and unable to get the Lesson files. The link given on Classroom in a Book does not work, and I get no response from Peachpit. Can you help?

CS5 Classroom in a Book Study Group?

Hello everyone.
I just purchased CS5 design premium and am working through most (if not all) of the Classroom in a Book series.
I'm currently on Lesson 12 of the Photoshop book and will be finishing the book soon, then moving on to either Illustrator or InDesign.
I'm looking to create a study group with some others that might be working through these books.
I find I learn better when I'm asked questions on how to do things vs chugging through a book and not remembering things when I get done.
So if you're interested please reply here or send me a message through the boards and we can connect via e-mail, MSN messenger, google chat, or Skype.
Or maybe we could use these forums here.

Apply gradient to text, cs5 like Classroom in a Book

I need to create a title in a document, a single word heading at the top. I'm using Win7 32 bit and AI cs5 and the book, Classroom in a Book.
I'm on page 310 where "Mike's Coffee" is the tutorial text. I've converted my text to path outlines, then Grouped the characters. From there, however, the script (or I) seem to get lost. Step 4 says "This applies a white to black gradient". Yes, it does.
However, I want to start with bright red, receding to nearly transparent and I can't follow the instruction from there -- getting colors into my panel. No, I've not loaded that lesson and perhaps that's why my panel and swatch doesn't match the book's.
Am I going to have to load this lesson, start from scratch on it to simply apply a gradient to a single word?

CS5 Classroom In A Book Errors

I'm learning some Dreamweaver through Adobe Press' Classroom In A Book and finding some pretty bad errors in it's editing. It's tough to then know if any problems I'm having with the program are related to my own mistakes, or if it's just another typo or error in the book.
That being said, when creating a new CSS style, what's the difference between a <#style> and a <.style>
I know the # is an ID reference, but what happens if Dw makes and uses the .style instead. The book shows a #style in it's illustration but when i follow the directions my Dw is automatically entering it as .style.
My mistake somewhere? Or is it another error from the book? How does this book make it to print will all the discrepancies from screen to what the book is showing? If you've picked up this book you'll know what I'm talking about.

However if you have
#style, then you are correct, it used to identify an ID
When you have
.style, it is used to identify a class
Class and Id's are similar, however only one ID can be used on a page, while you can use as many of the same class on one page as you like.

Adobe Classroom in a Book - Automated Editing to Markers

I am trying to learn Adobe Premiere in a class right now and we are using "Adobe Premiere Pro Classroom in a Book" as our text.
On page 139, it is talking about automated editing to markers and no matter what I do, I cannot get the results that the book is talking about.
I followed all the instructions to the letter:
Open the sequence Sunset Mortgage in the sequences bin.
Set the Timeline at the beginning and play the sequence.
Press the M key to add the markers to the beat of the music.
Set the Timeline to the beginning.
In the Project window, select all the Sunset images
Press the "Automate To" button make the setting match the same as the book.
I did all this and it still does not work. This is happening on the Mac I have at school as well as my Windows 7 machine at home.
Ideas?
I included two image. The first one is a screencap of my Automate To sequence (which is the same as the book) and the 2nd one is the Timeline window, showing what happened.

I'm not 100% why what you are doing is not working, but I can say the following steps work great in CS5 w/ Win7 64 bit:
1) Use the Asterisk key on the number keypad to mark the "beats" of the soundtrack
2) Drag and drop a folder of images or clips onto the "Automate to sequecence" icon
3) The same pop-up "Automate to Sequence" menu you show will come up; I use:
- Ordering = Sort order
- placement = At unnumbered markers
- method = Insert Edit
Also note that your photos or clips need to have a longer duration than where they are being inserted or there will be gaps

Has anyone read the new Classroom in a book, um...book yet?
I wondered how much new information there would be vs the overlap between it and the CS5 version that I already have.

Ok, So I completed the CS6 Production Premium Classroom in a book, and found it quite helpfull. From a beginners point of view, it was a great introduction to the possible workflow using all the Production Premium suite applications together. It was not a book on any particular part of the suite - although it did give some input on each.
Basically, it takes a real life situation of a band promo, supplies a lot of footage and souns clips, then walks you step by step thorugh managing media, managing dynamic link, workinf between applications from importing the first clip, to burning a DVD with menu functions and all.
Really a good read for those out there that dont know how the apps work together, and maybe want to shave some time off their current workflow - by maybe not rendering intermediate renders, but instead using the dynamic link functions.
Ok, so thats my sales pitch - I am now onto After Effects CS6 Visual Effects and COmpositing Studio Techniques by Mark Christiansen.
Now THIS is an interresting book!
I must admit, I have been looking forward to a book that does not give step by step tutorials, but rather explains the workings behind the program - so that the reader can actually interpret it themselves, and start using the effects etc in ways not "guidlined" by someone else.
As Rick has mentioned, blindly following tutorials wont help you learn the program and what it can do.
Having said this, I must shamedly admit that by chapter 2 I am already becoming a little unstuck!
I will keep at it though, and re read most of the book at least once or twice more, but some of the advice given is a little meyond me. For instance, the book has a chapter on the graph editor. Very good, but it assumes you understand the graph interface quite well already. I have not personally used it yet, having not done too manu serious animations, but know that it will be an invaluable tool in the near future - so, Ill take the chapter apart and try, try, try again!
When I have completed the book, I will provide some more feedback for those that are interrested.
(It is Christmas however, and our offices WILL stay open, just not as productive - so forgive me if it takes a week or two to get through the book - there are several factrors working against me at the moment - 1) 89.6 degree temp outside - so hotter in the little office and even worse under the red-heads, 2) a quiet building that we share with other businesses - dark corridors now - makes me tired all the time! 3) The CEO brought in his copy of Starcraft 2 and talked me into buying one as well - never played it before, so I need to learn quickly as we will be having a few rounds next week)
So, as you can all see, I am *terribly* busy at the moment, but I will give the feedabck as soon as I can!
Merry Christmas to all - and heres looking to a wonderful New Year for all of us!
