Clawless Leopard: No Internet Connect!

To my dismay, I could not locate the previous Internet Connect utility under the brand new Leopard.
When forced to connect to Internet via modem, such utility let me know in the past the initial link speed (e.g. 50.000 bps) and, if poor (i.e. below 50K bps), I cancelled the connection, unplugged the external USB Apple modem (which does worse than my previous PowerBook G4 built-in modem!) and reconnected it all as the only means I found out to force the phone line to allocate me a faster initial link...
Can I get some device (not iPulse: too messy for me!) measuring the link speed when I connect via dial-up, with a reliable numerical reading beyond the just blinking squares Leopard offers exclusively under Network in System Preferences (the Leopard Network utility does not work/move at all)?
Thanks.

Thank you all for your sympathy and support, with my special thanks to A. Mitchel for his idea, which Apple Support in Spain, where I am located nowadays, was at a loss about, when I asked them, previous to my post!
This is the apparent solution. I proceeded this way:
1. I tried to install Internet Connect from my previous Tiger install disk into my computer now under Leopard. The Tiger install disk was rejected as impracticable (maybe an uninstall defense from Leopard as newer?).
2. I remembered I still had my PowerBook G3 (unfeasible for Leopard, they say) under Tiger and copied its Internet Connect application onto a memory stick.
3. I copied Internet Connect into the applications folder of my Macbook Pro under Leopard, and opened the application.
It has worked: I got connected to the Internet, with the typical display I missed so much under Leopard.
Now I must test if everything works fine through the Tiger Internet Connect application imported into Leopard.

This works brilliantly.
And so simple...if you happen to have a pre-Leopard iBook laying around, which, happily, I did.
I used the ap to dial up and get online and here I am, with it back in my dock and quite functional.
Thanks ever so much, Vic for thinking of it.
It hadn't occurred to me to pull the ap from my rather outdated G3 iBook.
Which only goes to show that old Macs are never absolutely and completely without purpose!
I am going to take your fix to a couple of the other threads that talk about this issue, help out some of the other Connecties on the forum.
Oh, yeah, and to Phillip- iStat doesn't get it, not helpful to us who are STUCK WITH dialing.
Nice you don't have to. Congrats.

  • After upgrading to Snow Leopard no internet connection anymore

First of all thanks to all of you trying to help others with Mac related issues.
Now I have an issue: I just upgraded my iMac from Leopard 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard. The iMac is a lot faster now BUT ....... I have no connection to internet anymore. Safari, Firefox, Mail, iChat and Messenger all can not get connected to internet.
However Skype is connected to internet!!
I have a wired connection to my TC. My Mac Mini (with Leopard 10.5.8) works fine.
I am lost. I hope that there is somebody that can help me. Thanks.

I have decided to take the serious measures: I have made a fresh install of Snow Leopard and restore my apps and docs from the backup. Now everything works fine. Do not know why this happened in the first place.

  • Snow leopard no internet connection

i have just updated to snow leopard on my imac and now I cannot connect to the internet any answers please?
I am not very impressed that I have paid my money to waste time.

I am sorry to hear your Internet isn't working, however you really haven't given anyone here enough details to be able to help you.
How do you connect to the Internet? (Wireless/Wired)
Is there a router between you and the Internet, or are you directly connected to the modem? (if you are using wireless, it's probably a router)
When you look at the Network Preference Pane, does it say if you are connected? If you are connected, what is the IP address that you have?

  • OS X Leopard and internet connection via Airport

Help! I upgraded to OS X Leopard over the weekend and now I can't connect to the internet. I am using a cable model via Airport express. I'm picking up the airport connection & network but still can't get onto the internet (I get a "server unavailable" message). I upgraded both my desktop and laptop. The laptop is working intermittently, but the desktop only rarely. I have a PC laptop that is still able to connect without a problem. I've tried unplug/replugging the Airport; manually entering the ISP address; and installing the "login and keychain update" download but nothing is working. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Do you have Internet Sharing enabled (in the Sharing Preferences) on the Leopard Mac? These things have changed somewhat in Leopard from Tiger.

  • Are features of "Internet Connect"still available

Internet Connect in Tiger let you see the MAC address of the Airport Base Station you were connected to. Is that feature available somewhere else in Leopard since Internet Connect is gone?

Thanks for the info, but I am looking for the MACaddress of the base station I am connected to, not of the laptop I am using.
We are at a school where there are many access points and we are trying to determine how much bleed-over we are getting. In Tiger, if you launched Internet Connect and went to the Airport tab, you would get the Base Station ID. We could then determine which base station we were connected to and determine if we actually had the one with the strongest signal. We could also then monitor that base station for troubleshooting. I haven't found that Base Station ID information in Leopard. Can anyone help me with that?
    Thanks

  • I have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on my MacBook. Constantly dropping internet connection or message "error connecting to the network" comes up. No wireless connectivity issues with windows 7 laptop or iphone.

I have a MacBook with Snow Leopard 10.6.8. The last few weeks it has been constantly dropping internet connection, and one of these messages appear on the page: "Safari cannot open this page because the server where this page is located isn't responding" or "Safari cannot open this page because you are not connected to the internet" comes up. I will check Wifi and I am connected. No wifi connectivity issues with iphone or windows 7 laptop, this doesn't happen with either of those devices. I have unplugged and reset router, cleared cache, still happening. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

  • Trouble with internet connection after update to Snow Leopard

Happily surfing the internet with the most recent update of Tiger until deciding to upgrade to Snow Leopard so that I could connect to a wireless printer. Noticed almost immediately that Safari was spotty, sometime normal, but often painfully slow. Have checked forums that suggest dumping caches, reseting Safari, repairing permissions, doing fresh install of SL. Nothing has worked. Can't even get internet with Firefox. Internet connection seems to work after I start up, but then fails after 5-10 minutes. Most of the time it doesn't work at all. Doesn't seem to be a problem limited to Safari since Firefox won't work either. Phone support tried saying that SL likes a WPA router connection and not WEP, which is the current setup.
Finally, I decided to boot to my clone of Tiger. After a little bit of fussing around setting up the internet connection over Airport everything works just fine! What's wrong with SL and how can I fix it. Really like the iLife11 upgrade and being able to print wirelessly, but if I can't get internet access that makes it rather pointless. Know this is a lot and rather hastily written, but please help!

    Hello
Sorry, I have no answer to your problem. I just want to share that I amexeprience similar issues with my iMac since I upgraded to Snow leopard :
The LAN connection of the iMac slows down after accessing Internet, usually less that one hour. I can measure it through an Internet throughput utility on my provider's home page.
I have two Macs connected on the same DSL box, with the same OS version, Snow leopard, and nearly the same sofwtare configuration. Thus I can compare the Internet access speed :
After starting the computers, it is above 12 Mb/s.
On the iMac that I use most for Internet, it slow down to more or less 2 Mb/s after a few minutes, whereas it stays at 12 Mb/s on the MacMini.
Because of this, I believe it is LAN problem, not an Internet/DSL problem.
The same phenomenon happens if I connect to my DSL/Router with Ethernet or with Airport. The speed drops to similar values, below 3 Mb/s. Thus, the problem dose not seem to be related to LAN connection hardware.
Curiously, the speed is high again after shutting down and restaring the iMac. But it slows down again after a few minutes. Putting the computer to sleep does not help to restore maximal speed: it has to be shut down.
From all this, I draw the conclusion that the problem lies in a LAN software layer that is common to Ethernet and Airport and that is restarted only after shutdown.
I am using the MacMini as a reference for Internet access performance, in order to have a benchmark for iMac performance. I hav enot tried yet if the LAN performance of the MacMini collapses in a similar way if I use it to surf on the net.
I hope this will be helpfull do draw some attention from experts at Apple. It looks like a bug in a Snow Leopard LAN software layer.

  • No Ethernet/Internet Connection on Parallels 7 Running Snow Leopard Server - Fix?

I have recently installed Parallels 7 on my 2013 iMac, and have both Snow Leopard Server and Windows 7 running great on the Parallels platform.
However, after installing some anti-virus software, "ClamXav" and "MacScan", I need to have the internet connected to my Paralells 7 so I can receive viral updates to both these programs. I am unable to get any ethernet/internet connection on my Paralells 7 running Snow Leopard Server.
I have tried to update the Paralells 7 Snow Leopard Server "network Info" (in SL systems preferences" ... as the same ethernet connection info that I have running my "network connection" on my main OS Mountain Lion, but still no ethernet connection in Paralells 7.
This is a screen grab of the locations where I believe I am able to update my "ethernet" info for Paralells 7 Snow Leopard:
Obviously, I've blurred out the current info in these two windows, for security purposes, but exactly what should be applied to these windows to get my "ethernet" connection in Paralells 7 up and running?
I would think entering the exact same "network info" as appears in my Mountain Lion "Systems Preferences - Network" window, would get me internet connected on Paralells 7 Snow Leopard? Evidently not ... what is needed for me to get this right?
Anyone have experience getting "ethernet/internet" connected on Snow Leopard Server, using Paralells 7?

Since I have been directed to: "NOT waste everyones time on this discussion"  the only thing more I am going to do after this post is click on: "Stop email notifications" and never return to this thread again!
Internet access through Ethernet in Snow Leopard Server installed into Parallels 8 on 2011 Mac Mini in Lion:"
I simply don't want to purchase and have to install Parallels 8 .... Parallels 7 should work fine on connecting to the Internet. Also, I was asking about the internet connection issue with the new 2013 iMac (running Mountain Lion 10.8.3 runiing Parallels 7), not a 2011 Mini Mac running Lion with Parallels 8.

  • How to share Internet connection from Leopard to iPhone 3G?

    Hi!
How do you share Internet connection from Leopard to iPhone 3G?
So far I've managed to create a network and I joined my iPhone to the network. But when I turn on Internet Sharing from Leopard, iPhone's Safari won't use the connection. It either starts to use EDGE/3G or says that it isn't connected to the Internet...
    What went wrong?

I have managed to get it work, but only when I completely turn my desktop computer's firewall off. To do this, select the Security icon in System Preferences, then click the Firewall tab. Next, select the 'Allow all incoming connections' option. I wish there was a way to configure individual ports so that I didn't have to leave my firewall wide open, but I haven't figured out how to do that so far.

  • Internet Connections after Snow Leopard Installation

    Hi
I'm having problems with my internet connection since I installed snow. Some times it catches my router signal and some others don't. And when it gets it, then it says is connected but there's no internet signal. I'm sending this message from my work computer using the same internet connection.
    Can you help?
    Thanks!

Try going directly to the internet when wired to your modem. I assume your router worked OK on Leopard. I doubt it would work any differently on SL, but, yes, updating its firmware might be your answer. What kind of router do you have? Many non-Apple routers will work just fine. I have always used Linksys (i.e., Cisco--which makes outstanding routers). Also, have you tried your machine on another network--one in the neighborhood you might "borrow" for test purposes or one at a Starbucks.

  • Do I need Internet Connection to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard?

    Hi,
I am going to install new mac os x snow leopard, but I don't have any internet connection at the moment and waiting for broadband service providers to provide me broadband.
I am just wondering that if I need internet connection to install this os or not?? should I wait for broadband connection or not??
    any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks.

*Some features require a compatible Internet service provider*
...which just means that you can't use Mail, for example, unless you've got internet service and an e-mail account. This has nothing to do with the installer.
Wait until you have a broadband internet connection. One of the setup guides needs to connect in order to set your time zone.
...which is not strictly necessary, since you can easily set it manually.
A more important issue is that, without an internet connection, the installer won't be able to check Apple's servers for an updated list of incompatible software. This is not strictly necessary, but it's a good idea.

  • Imbedded movies, internet connection and Leopard

Ever since I upgraded to Leopard a few days ago, my internet connection drops about 4-5 seconds into loading the movie/video and I have to restart my router. This didn't happen with Tiger and happens both when I use Opera and Safari. It's a Mac only problem because I tried loading some videos on my PC and they loaded up fine, no internet connection being dropped and didn't have to restart the router. Any suggestions on what's going on or how to fix it?

Only thing that solves the problem is restarting both the mac and router.

  • SLOW Internet Connection on Snow Leopard

    Hi all,
I got a new iMac with Snow Leopard yesterday. All of a sudden, my internet connection speed is extremely low. I just checked the speed on my old MacBook, which still runs on Leopard, and using the same cable and connection point, it is about 1.4 mb/s. On the iMac, the connection speed is only 0.14 mb/s!
Do you have any idea how I can fix this problem? Is it something to do with my internet provider or Snow Leopard?
    Thanks very much.
    Jana

Here is a solution to having a sluggish internet experience that has worked for some.
    1. Go Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ and move the folder to your desktop.
    2. Reboot
The folder moved should be recreated upon reboot. You may have to reconnect to your wireless network if applicable. And, you may need to go System Preferences > Sharing and re-enter your computer's name. Check what name is given in sharing before following my instructions. If problems develop, then your can move the original folder back, thus, overwriting anything recreated.

  • Airport not maintaining internet connection on my D-link router with Macbook Pro 5.5 with Snow leopard

Airport keeps throwing me out of internet connection on my D-link router with Macbook Pro 5.5 with Snow leopard. Pls if anyone has a solution to this then let me know

I'm using my PC notebook because connecting with my iMac is IMPOSSIBLE!!! If I get connected at all, it's worse than dial-up speed.
We are wireless via a D-Link DIR-625 (new) -- but was having some problems before with a netgear. Problem much worse now. My computers are not the primary computers. My sister gets that coin toss. She is a PC user. I share with her using WPA2. When the iMac "wakes" the signal bands are strong, but when I go to a page I lose all signal strength. And several times a day I get a message indicating an error joining the network -- arghhhhh -- HELP!
Is the problem with D-Link or Mac? Thanks for any help.
