'Clean' 10.8 Install for New HDD

I'm installing a new HDD but do not want to clone the entire contents from my old HDD, just the mountain lion system platform.  Reason being is that I want to start with a 'clean slate' without any 3rd party software, etc.
• If I boot from the old HDD that's connected via an external enclosure, will Recovery allow me to select the new HDD and download mountain lion?
• Or do I have to first configure the new HDD with 10.6.8 then use Recovery (once booted to the old HDD with mountain lion) to download mountain lion to the new HDD?
What I'm not clear on is whether Recovery will allow me to select the new HDD and download, even with the old HDD on board.
If there's another procedure for accomlishing my goal aside from what I mentioned above I'd greatly appreciate any guidance.
Thanks.

Yes, starting up in Recovery Mode will allow you to download and install Mountain Lion onto the New HDD.
But there is a catch, the new HDD must first be set up GUID Partition Table and Mac OS Extended (Journaled) before you can Install OS X and use it as a Startup Drive.
What I do is:
1. Pop the new HDD into the Enclosure
2. Connect the External HD up to the iMac
3. Go to Applcations Utilities and open Disk Utility
4. Highlight the new HDD in the list of drives and select the Partition tab
5. Under Volume Scheme select 1 Partition and click on the Options... button
6. Select GUID Partition Table in the drop down window and click the OK... button
7. Next set the Format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click the Apply... button
8. Once thats done, startup into Recovery Mode, Download and Install ML on the new HDD
9. Restart holding the Option key and from Startup Manager select the new OS X on the HDD
10. Then only after starting up from and testing the new OS X on the new HDD, move it to the iMac

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The hard drive is not formatted, and it must be formatted in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" in order to install OS X.
Close the OS X installer, and go to Utilities menu (on the menu bar) > Disk Utility. Then, format your hard drive in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as Format > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html Finally, close Disk Utility and install OS X

  • How much RAM should I install for new iMAC ?

    Hi,
How much RAM should I install for new iMAC* running Logic Studio? It comes with 4 GB - is that enough? (can you run in 64 bit mode..)
    *(The 21.5" 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo)
Also, I was planning to get the stock 1 TB Hard Drive & save projects to an external drive.
    Does that sound reasonable?
    Any other recommendations?
    Thanks,
    Wm Heart

Unless you plan on running huge projects with enormous sampled instruments, 4 GB will do (very) fine. And your disk plan is sound. Choose an external Firewire drive, rather than USB. FW is easier on the CPU and can handle more tracks than USB.
What you should get, instead of more memory, is a (24 bit) external audio interface, if you want to do serious recording and playback.
What type of audio interface you'ld need, depends on what you want to do with it and of course your budget. From decent to brilliant costs from roughly 100 to several 1,000's of europounddollars. Avoid the 16 bit ones, they're worse than the inbuilt audio chip of your iMac. You can recognize 16 bit Audio Interfaces (in webshops) by their prize (often under 100€£$) and the lack of mention of their bitrate.

  • Freeing up SN on crashed HDD for install on new HDD

    Hi,
Laptop HDD failed, new HDD installed and configured. I can't deactivate SN on old drive since the drive is dead.
I need to free up that SN for Acrobat Pro X to install on the new laptop HDD. How can I do this?
    Thanks
    Brad

You should have at least 2 installs that you can use. You will still need the SN. If you need to deactivate after the crash, you will need to contact Adobe. I don't have the correct contact at hand, so either you will have to wait for someone else to provide it or search the Adobe site yourself.

  • Input / Output error for new HDD on MacBook Pro 5.5

    Hi there,
    New to Apple Support Communities
I have a problem with a MacBook Pro 5.5 Intel Core 2 Duo
Original Fujitsu 160GB HDD crashed and I replaced it with a Hitachi 250GB HDD.
Hitachi 250GB drive is partitioned to GUID Partition Scheme but when I try to format the drive in Disk Utility to Mac OS X Extended Journaled, I keep receiving an Input / Output error. I tried even erasing the drive and I get the same error.
I also tried using Diskutil in terminal window and I get Input / Output error.
I talked with a guy in work who knows about the Mac and he said the drive could be locked in which the Mac can't unlock to format the drive.
There is nothing wrong with the drive at all. It works perfect. I'm at a loss as to why the Mac won't install the OS X 10.5.7
I've looked at many Mac support sites for problems / solution but no solution
Could someone who has experienced this before please help to resolve my problem.
    Regards,
    DTreacy

    Hi there,
An update on the MacBook Pro 5.5 problem.
Mac OS X seems to only install when the HDD is connected to the laptop as a USB drive.
When I put the drive back into the laptop, it won't boot to the OS.
    The mount is /volume/Macintosh_HD.
I even tried reformatting the drive but got an error that it could not unmount the drive. I tried a force unmount which worked but the drive disappeared from the disk utility.
My only way to get the drive back was to connect it again as a USB drive and again I was able to install the OS again.
Can some help to resolve the problem. How can I make the drive boot to the OS when it is connected as an internal drive
    Regards,

  • Installed a new hdd, want to install from time machine

I just had a new hdd put into my 2009 macbook. I was trying to reinstall all my files from time machine but only 60 of the 200gb appeared.  What is my best course of action?
    Thanks

No, there isn't any way to connect them, but it doesn't really make any difference - if you installed from disks, you use Software Update to keep it current. If you use the app store version, you download the latest update.
The thing that probably matters is that your serial number represents your license to use the software.

  • Cloning windows partition for new HDD

I am getting a new HDD for my mac and have a windows partition. From searching, I know that Mac OS X recognizes this as a different HDD entirely. I want to know if there is a way I can clone my current Mac partition AND Windows 7 partition onto my new HDD

Did I miss the memo? I wasn't aware that SD or CCC could clone a Boot Camp partition. I know Disk Utility won't.
I believe CopyCatX will replicate an entire drive via bit-copy. And CloneZilla can also be used to clone the Windows volume or a whole drive. Not sure how well it does with Mac formatted volumes, but it's supposed to work. Look for them at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.

  • Install of new HDD in Mac Book Pro

Final questions about installing a new, blank HDD in my MBP:
My understanding is that to install OS X on a new, blank drive, I simply insert DVD 1 into the disk drive, select save files and archives, and repond to further prompts. Is that correct? Do I also need to hold down the option key while the DVD is running in the drive?
With these questions answered, i'll be good to go on the new drive.
    Thanks.

Do you want a fresh copy of the OS or do you want to move from another drive? If it's the former, then you just run the installation from the disc. If it's the latter, it depends on what you have on the old drive (e.g. Time Machine or a regular OS X install).

  • Pc hdd issues when installing a new hdd

Hey guys I just made an account so if I posted this in the wrong place please forgive me but my computer had a faulty hdd. I got a new one and put the new hdd in. when I was getting ready to put windows 7 on it with a flash drive, it said that the setup could not create a new system partition. so I read alil bit and someone said to format the hdd in the set up. so I did that and then the set up said that it could not find drivers or something.. I tried restarting my pc but it wont boot passed the screan that allows me to choose options like "choose boot. etc.." my guess is that I need the bios os the pc to assign drivers to the hdd and other components because I cant do anything at the screen it stops at. I cant hit F2 or esc or anything for that matter. if someone could help me out id really appreciate it

  • Installing a new HDD to a Unibody MBP

    Hello everyone,
I'm trying to install a new 7200RPM WD Scorpio Black 320GB HDD onto my new Unibody MBP, but having some issues.
After succesfully installing the HDD itself next to the battery, the computer won't boot up with the OS X disc that came with the MBP. It just spits it out of the machine with a folder with question mark blinking on the screen.
My current HDD is 320GB 5400RPM Hitachi (the stock one), and I have no problems with that hard drive.
    what should I do?
    Thanks in advance!

Not really sure what's up. When I did mine, I just held the C button down before I started it up and then let go after I got the install screen. I could hear it hitting the CD drive while it started up. So it works fine with the original hard drive? So it doesn't sound like it's the disk. I'm not sure I can help anymore. I'm assuming you checked and made sure the connection to the hard drive is secure and you are in fact using the correct install disk? (I think there are 2 and 1 is the install disk and I'm not sure what the other is)

  • I want to install the new HDD for Satellite 1410-303

Can I install the HDD MK8032GAX (80Gb Toshiba 2.5" IDE, 5400rpm, 16Mb) into my Toshiba Satellite 1410-303? Will BIOS detect it?

Unfortunately there is no official document about that because HDD upgrade is so-called dealer option and because of that there is no precise info about HDD upgrade. According to notebook specification, this notebook model is delivered with 20GB HDD.
I am pretty sure you can use 40 or 60 GB without any problems. About 80 GB I will not speculate but maybe someone has already tested and will post here in next few days.
    Good luck!

  • Installing a new HDD

Okay I have a 80Gb Firewire HDD and internal 80Gb HDD, the plan is to use CCC to backup the current 30Gb HDD to the FW one and make it bootable. Then swap out the 30 for the 80, Hook up the FW external HDD and copy back to the new internal 80gb HDD.
First is this a good idea, remeber I'll have the 30Gb HDD untouch waiting if there are any problem.
But I need to know how do I boot to the FW external HDD if I have a blank internal HDD, do I just boot from the installer CD and select the FW drive and re-boot to that?
    The iBook is running 10.3.9.

With the FireWire drive connected to your computer and Mac OS X installed on it, restart with the Option key held down, select the external drive in the list of disks, and then push the button with the straight arrow. Doing this won't change the computer's default startup disk, which can be done from the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.

  • BI version to install for new implementation

    Hello,
I am a technical consultant for a new implementation of BW with the requirement of SEM-BPS. We are considering installing NW2004s with BI Content 7.0. However since it is so new we are wondering about the stability. We are also not sure if we are losing any functionality with the latest version.
My question is should we install the latest BI version or go with BW 3.5 which the consultants are familiar with and has been out there for a long time.
Since BW 3.5 is part of Netweaver 2004, I believe it should be supported until at least 2010.
    Thank you, George Barta

    Hi:
There are already more than 35 customers live on BI in SAP NetWeaver 2004s, with more than 500 active projects.
You definitely should go with 2004s, as it can do everything 3.5 can do but so much more.  You can avoid an upgrade in the near term by simply starting with BI in SAP NetWeaver 2004s.
You are not losing functionality with the new version.  As stated before, there is a 3.5 system "under the covers".
However, note that BI Integrated planning is the new version of the planning application.  SEM-BPS will continue to be supported going forward, but SAP will not invest in developing it anymore.  Instead, all development resources flow into BI Integrated planning.
Both SEM-BPS and BI Integrated planning are available in BI in SAP NetWeaver 2004s, you can choose which one to utilize (and can have a mix of the two running in the same system).  Note that there are no automated migration tools between the 2. Would be good to take the SAP going forward plan into account when determining your strategy.
    Thanks for the points -

  • MacBook Pro OS X install to new HDD

Total Mac noobie here (thanks for your patience)
I got my hands on 13" MacBook Pro and decided to upgrade it with ssd.
So fresh install to Mac that had been used for about 2 years.
I have the original grey disc that says  Mac OS Version 10.6.7 (disc version 1.2)
So the first message I got was that Mac OS X cannot be installed to this computer (or something)
After some Googling I found the instructions how to partition and what selection should should be used:
GUID and formatted it Mac OS Extended, Journaled.
    No luck.
This shouldn't be this hard, right?
If previous owner updated firmware, can it somehow conflict with my attempts to install original OS X version?
    Thanks for any suggestions

    Thank you for your reply!
Yeah did that in that order and got the same error message.
Because I'm such a noob I took my MBP to someone who knows these things, someone authorized
And it turned out that somebody had messed up in inventory and discs that was claimed to be sold with this computer apparently wasnt the ones since the guy said that licence in my MBP is 10.5.x and the discs were 10.6.x. To this date I have not been able to find the original discs that would state MAC OS X 10.5.x in them.
If someone could briefly explain: does the computer have a licence permanently marked to its insides or what?
Anyway got things sorted, got MBP back with 10.6.7 (i guess). Tried to install boot camp and it was hung up on partitioning, I had to leave it on overnight. In the morning I had to cut the power to get it to wake up and now it says that the hdd is full (checked with whatsize, couldn't find anything). Its like boot camp made the partition or reservation for partition but never made the actual partitioning.
Now I'm stuck where I should repair hdd with installation disc that I apparently dont have. I have other installation disc that lets me to enter the disk utilities but I might end up to a situation where I do not have working installation disc nor working MBP.
What a nightmare, please wake me up.
    Thanks
