Clean and reinstal MAC OS - X Tiger

I have lately had noumerous problems with my mac - last escalation was that I got my MAC back from authorised Service - they had replaced my screen due to bluetooth problems, and then my mailsystem would not work 100 %. It was slow, recievers reported different fonts and size in text or other letters than the ones supposed to be. Furthermore my right arrow tab, will not react if I am locked in with my normal user - I created another username and right arrow tab worked fine.
Anyway - since I have had so much troubble lately I have decided to clean everything out and reinstall everything. However I am not sure if the install Disc from Tiger will help clean other software programs on the harddrive ? Do I need to uninstall Adobe Creative suite and Office for MAC manually before ?
Anybody out here who can advice me on how to clean everything out and reinstall Tiger ?

Insert the Tiger DVD into the optical drive. Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key until the computer starts up from the DVD. After the installer loads proceed with the Tiger installation. When you reach the scrren where you select the destination (target) drive click on the destination drive icon, then click on the Options button. Set the installation type to Erase and Install. Click on OK button and continue with the installation.
This will effectively erase everything off of the hard drive then install a fresh copy of Tiger.

  • Best way to clean and reinstall hd?

what is the most effective way to totally clean and reinstall/upgrade my internal hd ( 100g ) on my g4,15" pb... it has been a year or so since I have done this....want to clean house due to general glitches, etc.
I have 2 external fw hds (os 1.4.3 on one for external bootup to do maintenance, etc).... all of my applications are on the pb's hd..
what I usually did in the past was copy my users folder to another drive... and files I wanted to keep.. then wipe/erase the hd using tech tool pro...reformat using the original pb discs... then move my users folder back and install the new os using my original pb tiger install disc... do a clean install... then move files I wanted from my older user folder... and do the mac os upgrades via downloads...

First off, there isn't such a thing as a Mac OS X clean install:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607614
Erasing the drive or restoring the original software should get rid of software related glitches, however, restoring data assumes you have a couple good working backups. As I'm learning migrating from a new machine, even a good clone isn't necessarily going to recover all the files directly. Erasing should be a last ditch option to resolve issues. Recovery after an erase can take the better part of a day if not more.
So I would troubleshoot your existing configuration given that you are backed up.
How much free disk space do you have?

  • Step by step instructions to wipe clean and reinstall

Hello. I am hoping somewhere on here, there will be someone who can direct me to step-by-step instructions to wipe clean and reinstall operating system.
iMac g4 (the dome model, which I still love). 7 years old. 10.2 operating system. It has been crashing repeatedly and I paid for diagnostics, they propose wiping clean and reinstalling, and I really need to do this myself and not pay for it.
Pretty please, I hope you can direct me. Thanks!
    Amy

    Amy,
Before going the *nuke route*, please post who did the diagnostics. Was it a "Genius" at an Apple Retail Store or a third party Mac Reseller?
What is the condition of the RAM (total)..... how much free space on the Hard Drive .... at what point in time did it start to crash ..... did it start after downloading some software .... have you tried Repairing Permissions .... do you run a maintenance Utility like Macaroni to clean up the OSX .... have you tried to run Repair Disk (HD) using the original Install disc of Jaguar .... did you ever update to the latest version of 10.2.8 ...... are you trying to access websites that do not support Jag?
As they use to say in Dragnet ....... "just give us the facts".

  • Can i recover photo files lost when i wiped out my hard-drive and  reinstalled mac os x?

Can i recover photo files lost when i wiped out my hard-drive and  reinstalled mac os x?  I know that when a computer is wiped cleaned that the info is still on the hard drive, how do I access it?  Can I pay someone to access it?  Long story short, everything was saved to my external hard drive except my photos, by mistake of course.

You have to stop using the drive immediately.  Completely stop.  Do not boot the computer from the drive.
File recovery software: Try using an application such as Data Rescue 3 - http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php or FileSalvage - http://subrosasoft.com, or one of the ones listed in the (old) link below. Some have free trial versions that let you see if the software will help before you decide to buy. You will also need a second hard drive equal to or larger in size than your first drive as a destination drive for recovered files.
    http://data-recovery-software-review.toptenreviews.com/mac-recovery-software
It is critical that you do not use the computer or even turn it on until you have rescued your files. Files only have the directory reference to them removed when you empty the trash or otherwise delete them from a computer (unless you use secure erase, in which case they are gone forever or can only be potentially be recovered by very expensive means) and are still present on the computer. However, their space is marked as available to any other file creation done on the computer (even done by you booting the computer) and there is risk that your files will be overwritten by the computer.
Even if the above works, do not expect the results to be pretty or even 100% successful.  Files will often lose their names and you will have to re-name them one by one.

  • Having problems erasing and reinstalling Mac os x on 2007 MBP 15in

    Hello
I am having some problems here and was hoping for some help.
Just recently here, I decided to erase and reinstall Mac Os X on my sister's 2007 MBP. She just recently got a new 15in MBP and wanted most of her content on the 2007 to be erased. Well... I did some reading around and found that the easiest way to do so was with the os X DVD that came with the thing. Problem is....I can't seem to find it for the 2007 MBP. So I decided to try the 2010 version. Went into the disk, ran disk utility, wiping the hard drive, did all the right steps according to Apple, and then rebooted to try get a clean version of OS X on. Well, problem is, it would come to the language select screen, but after that selection, it would come up with this error:
"Mac OS X can't be installed on this computer
If you want to restore your system from a Time Machine backup, click "Restore from Backup"
I've tried reformatting the HD several times and even tried restoring, but it wouldn't display my system restores...
So my quesiton is, is it becuase I have the wrong DVD that its not working or is there something else I"m missing?
Any help would be vastly appreacited (especially since its not my computer!)
    Thanks!
    Jordon Spronk

The install disks that come with a model of a Mac have certain hardware drivers for the computer and video card, you can't use another Mac's install disk.
However you can use the $29 Snow Leopard install disk, but it doesn't come with iLife, that's extra.

  • Reinstalled Mac os x tiger accidentally erased classics

I installed the Mac OS x tiger, updated the software along with others then started experiencing computer freeze, you know the kind saying "Need to restart computer etc. After several restarts for days including frustrations I decided to reinstall Mac OS X tiger. Did great, no startup problems. But when I finally got around to wanting to use my old software like Quarkxpress 4.0, Photoshop 6.0 etc I noticed I had accidentally erased my Classic system. I have no Mac OS 9 disk available to reinstall. Does anyone know if I can reinstall this software and it run on OS X tiger?
I would appreciate any help or advice. Has anyone ever tried this step?

Depending on the vintage, model and build year of the computer you have
the software packet contents included with the computer should have had
some kind of OS9 or Classic system on a disc in the packet. And in some
of the computers of a certain vintage, the OS9 drivers are installed with
the OS X, first; and then a special installer version of OS 9 included would
be installed after OS X. Earlier Macs had OS 9 installed first and then, an
OS X could be installed second. So, it does matter what computer you have.
Not all OS 9.x installers will work in a newer computer, and if yours does not
dual boot OS9 and OS X, it would be newer and use an OS9 system as Classic.
This would require a computer specific disc set in order to get the correct installer.
Some users of a system have been able to drag and drop a satisfactory OS9.2.2
system and application folder from another running computer. That is one way
if you happen to have an external drive & a way to get another working OS 9.2.2.
First things first; identify your computer. If you don't know about it, then there are
some basic configuration details about it on the outside of the case (cabinet) it's in.
And then look into the database (download, free) from http://mactracker.ca details.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How to uninstall and reinstall mac os x...corrupt files...help!

i recently got a macbook pro to use for my photography and music and such, but i have never had a mac before and i'm used to pcs. i think a virus may have gotten on my computer because a couple days ago i went to upload a cd into itunes and i noticed that none of the songs i uploaded played. they showed up in the player but didn't actually play. so i restarted itunes and it said that my library was corrupt and that it had created a new one. the same thing happened in aperture. i exported some pictures from aperture to a file on my computer, and the pictures were there but half of them wouldn't display. so i restarted my computer, and aperture said it had to recover my folders, but it only recovered the folders that came with aperture...all of my library folders were gone. so i tried to import files from my computer into the aperture library and aperture just closed. this is actually the only way aperture will close--once it is open i have to force quit or just try to import files. since i have never worked with macs before the only way i can see to solve this problem is to burn all of my music and pictures to rewritable dvds (because those are the only files i really need) and then uninstall and reinstall mac os x. but i don't really know how to do this. any suggestions?

  • My macbook running Mavericks is slow.  I use it for recording and it is struggling. I am trying to avoid wiping my computer clean and reinstalling everything...

Here is the etrecheck report.  Any suggestions of some other maintenance I can perform on my computer?  A mac tech did a system diagnostic and found nothing wrong with the hardware. I have already reinstalled Mavericks, so it seems like the next step is wiping the harddrive clean and starting over, but I want to avoid that if possible!  Can anybody help?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Want to clean and reinstall my early 2009 IMAC, but have Snow Leopard and no discs

Have an Early 2009 IMAC.  My daughter (14, and an indiscriminate clicker of "OK" buttons on pop ups to get rid of them) has been using it for a year, and is it is now running very slowly, locking up, etc.  I am not particularly computer savvy, but would like to do a full clean of hard drive and reinstall.  Can't find the Snow leapard discs (My current OS X is 10.6.8), but want to go to yosemite to match my more current mac air.  Questions:
    1.  Yosemite haters, I know there are people who feel that this is a risk, but otherwise this thing is pretty much an attractive paper weight.
    2.  I could upgrade my RAM to 8 GB (only has 2 slots being an early 2009), is that necessary?  I would rather just upgrade and see how it goes.
    3.  I have backed up to time machine.
    4.  Yes, I bought a cheap PC (boo hiss) for my daughter, but at least she won't be touching this one anymore
Below is my system information from Etrecheck.

You need to get rid of MacKeeper (Zeobit).  Do not use their uninstaller, follow the instructions here ...
    http://applehelpwriter.com/2011/09/21/how-to-uninstall-mackeeper-malware/
When that is done there does not appear to be a lot wrong if you correct the red ink entries.
The 4Gb is sufficient for Yosemite though 6 or 8 Gb would be better.  You may find the download slow so be prepared.

  • Reinstalling Mac OS X Tiger

    Hello there,
I just bought my Macbook Pro few days ago and have been doing a lot of reading since then regarding Mac. I am totally new to Mac and have totally no idea on how to use it. But all and all, I am so loving it already and have no regrets eventhough it is costing me half year of my basic salary. AACHAA! and Mac support forum is superb!
However, with this new Mac - I am just too affraid to try out new things or installing new application. I don't have a Mac Suport Care Center here at my town or anywhere close at all (within driving distance). And also no Mac user to share their troubleshooting exprerience (besides my brother who just bought a Macbook Pro also few days ago). Basically, we are all alone. But again, thanks goodness to this forum. I don't felt that lonely anymore as a Mac user.
Anyhow, by fearing of causing more damages towards Mac OS X Tiger with certain application installed - I know I will not be able to exprerience the Macbook Pro to it's best performance. I have been working on my PC (Microsoft Windows XP) for the past 7 years. So hopefully, I will be able to get all my working software in Mac version and work fulltime infront of Mac 24-7.
Therefore, I was wondering if it will be easy for me to do a simple reinstallation with the 2 CD provided together with this purchased of my Macbook Pro (if needed).
    1) Does the 2 CD provided will restored Mac OS X Tiger as well?
    2) Or it just simply reinstalled a Mac OS X with an older version?
    3) If that is the case, will I be able to restored Mac OS X Tiger by easily download the file from this website?
    4) What about the drivers? can I somehow backup the driver before I proceed on with the reinstallation and easily have it restored back?
    5) Otherwise, is there anywhere I can manually take down the all the drivers?
Of course it is always best not to have it reinstalled. But just in preparation if I ever reach the point of no returned.
I would appreciate it if you can show me how. With the knowledge, I will felt more insured to exlplore more freely into Mac.
    Thank you in advance.

    1) Does the 2 CD provided will restored Mac OS X Tiger as well?
The two DVDs include a full installer for an Intel version of OS X, all required OS X software, installer for pre-bundled software, and installer for XCode Tools.
    2) Or it just simply reinstalled a Mac OS X with an older version?
The OS X installer installs the default version of OS X required for your current MacBook model. If this is not the most recent version then you can update by downloading and installing a Combo Updater (Intel) from Apple's Download Site.
    3) If that is the case, will I be able to restored Mac OS X Tiger by easily download the file from this website?
As said previously reinstalling OS X can be done using the DVDs that came with your computer. You cannot download Tiger.
    4) What about the drivers? can I somehow backup the driver before I proceed on with the reinstallation and easily have it restored back?
OS X comes with drivers for virtually any peripheral or device. However, proprietary drivers required for third-party peripherals would have to be reinstalled if you reinstall OS X from scratch.
    5) Otherwise, is there anywhere I can manually take down the all the drivers?
I have no idea what this question is asking because it is not intelligible.
As the computer comes out of the box there is no need to reinstall OS X. Everything is already pre-installed. As a new user you would be well advised to take the time to thoroughly and carefully read the User Guide that came with the computer as well as the brief introduction to OS X. You may find it helpful to read Switcher 101 Tutorial.
Good sources for shareware and freeware are VersionTracker or MacUpdate. You may also consider buying one or two good introductory books about OS X. Two good choices are *OS X for Dummies* and *Mac OS X: The Missing Manual*.

  • How do I uninstall iPhoto 5 and reinstall iPhoto 4 in Tiger

I would like to uninstall iPhoto 5 and go back to iPhoto 4. I am using a Pentax Optio S4 Camera and have 3500 pictures in iPhoto 5 and am very unhappy with the performance since upgrading to iPhoto 5. I have read others are also having problems with certain cameras because of EXIF information used to create Maker Notes. With iPhoto 4 my system was very responsive, fast, and reliable. I've decided that the functionality of iPhoto 4 out weighs the features I will loose with iPhoto 5. So, I am wondering what the process is to uninstall iPhoto 5 and reinstall iPhoto 4. I am running Tiger 10.4.3. Has anyone else done this?

    Hi xjfo,
To go back to an older version of iPhoto, you must have a backed up Library from that version. An older version of iPhoto will not open newer versions libraries.
If you have newly imported photos in your 5 library that are not in your backed up library you will need to share/export them now. Export the Original to the desktop. These can be imported once you are back in the older version of iPhoto.
Navigate to /Applications and drag iPhoto to the trash
Navigate to /Library/Receipts and drag all of the iPhoto receipts to the trash
Navigate to ~/Library/Preferences and drag com.apple.iPhoto.plist to the trash
Navigate to ~/Pictures and drag your iPhoto 5 Library folder to the desktop. You can keep it on your hard drive in another folder, or you can rename it and keep it in the Pictures folder, or you can move it to an external for safe keeping or you can burn the entire iPhoto Library folder for safekeeping.
Insert your older iLife CD/DVD and choose to do a custom install.
    Install iPhoto
Run Software Update and update iPhoto to the latest version. that means if you installed 4 there should be some updated version of 4
Put your backed up iPhoto Library in the Pictures folder. If it is named iPhoto Library then it should open when iPhoto is launched.
If you renamed it, then launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and have it open the library you navigate to.
If you don't have a backed up version of the iPhoto Library of the version you want to install then you have a lot more steps to do.
If done this way, all albums, keywords, folders will have to be redone because you are starting from scratch with a new library and importing these photos into the new library.
    Close iPhoto
Rename your old iPhoto Library to "iPhoto Library_old"
Drag this library to your desktop
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
    Go to File>add to library
Navigate to the old library on your desktop and choose it.
iPhoto will start importing the images from your old library
    This is what to expect:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
Once all you images have been imported, check through the library and make sure everything looks ok.
You can now start making your Albums, and do your keywords or any other organizational steps.
You can also delete the old library on the desktop.
It is also a good time to backup this new library to CD/DVD by burning the iPhoto LIbrary folder in the Finder, or copying the iPhoto Library folder to an external drive formatted for Macs, or copying the iPhoto LIbrary folder to an iPod.
    Good luck!
    Lori

  • Previously running CS4 won't open, even after script clean and reinstall

    I can't get in!....
    Seems like a license issue.
After trying all (7) of the fixes in kb405970 recommended by Adobe tech support, I was unable to get access to my previously working CS4 Production Suite products. I removed the entire program and ran CS4 Clean Script for Macintosh, then reinstalled Production Suite.
Now, when I try to get into any of the products, i get a registration screen that accepts my VALID and REGISTERED (from the Adobe Registration site) CS4 Prod Suite serial number, and NOTHING happens. No programs open.I can't get any response from Adobe tech support for the last 10 days. Case has been open since October 18. I'm just diving into asking for help in a forum.
    HELP! Please

I had this problem yesterday, actually. You can solve it, but you will lose all firefox data you didn't back up. Then again, because you already tried uninstalling and reinstalling, I assume this isn't an issue.
Assuming you've installed windows on the C drive:
    Go to C://Users/yourname/AppData
If you cant find it, go to your display settings (I hope I translated this correct; I use the Dutch version of Windows) and make sure that hidden files and filders are not being... well, hidden. Shocking plottwist, I know.
If all goes well, you should now see three folders named Local, Localrow and Roaming.
Now go to Roaming > Mozilla > Firefox and delete everything thats in there. Now you have an empty FireFox folder, which will force Firefox to start up as if it was never installed before.
    Done! :)
P.S. Now that you have a fresh new install, save yourself a lot of future pain and install [https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/xmarks-sync Xmarks] for your bookmarks and [https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/lastpass-password-manager LastPass] for your passwords. These add-ons will keep your data safely on their servers, where it is yours to backup and download anywhere in the world.
Also, if you have about three milion add-ons and personas/themes and you don't want to hunt hem down again everytime you reïnstall Windows or buy a new system, get [https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/febe FEBE] to save a copy of them for you. And if you really want to backup like a pro, install [https://www.dropbox.com/ DropBox] (not an addon) and tell FEBE to store its files there, so you can still retrieve them if your house happens to burn down.
Xmarks, LastPass and FEBE: the holy trinity of Firefox backups :P

  • Help: Tried using disk install to erase and reinstall mac osx

Could someone please help me. I just bought a second hand macbook pro off someone and upon recieving it realised they hadn't erased everything and their user account was still set up and active as administrator. This means i'll have issues down the track doing updates etc.
I googled how to hard reset the computer to start from scratch and followed steps. Basically they were
    1. Restart computer whilst holding down the command and r buttons (which I did)
    2. When the wifi connection box comes up connect to reliable wifi (done)
    3. Then it said go into the disk utility and erase the mac os extended disk (the problem here is 1. the steps didnt specify that it should be the macintosh HD disk erased and 2. It should be the mac os extended (journaled) version, i've just fogured this out after a lot more searching as to why the reinstall of mac OSX wouldn't then work)
now i'm freaking out that i've done irreperable damage given that the mac OSX base system (mac OS extended (non-journaled)) has been erased. Can anyone please tell me if this can be reinstalled? Or what I should do next?

whereas in the macintosh HD partition nothing has been greyed out (so the option to erase is there, which im assuming means it hasn't been erased)
    (capacity: 319.73GB, available: 319.3 GB, used 425MB).
Does this help explain the situation?
That does help. The reason why the Macintosh HD partition is the only one where nothing is greyed out is that that's where your new OS X installation should be targeted (note that it's the only partition with room for a full OS X installation as well as your own files and applications). The option to erase is available in case you want to, for some reason, erase it again. Remember, you're booting from the Recovery HD and that's a partition on your HD too. You aren't allowed to erase the partition you booted from (hence, it's greyed out), and, since it's normally hidden, as are others, such as the EFI, it shouldn't be messed with anyway.

  • Miss erased disk? and reinstall MAC OS X problem!

    NEEDS HELP...
    very new to mac...
    "160.04 GB Internal SATA Disk"
    "Macintosh HD"
Im completely erased the "macintosh HD' on my macbook using disk utility....
then i try to reinstall MAC OS on it....
but then it couldnt find any disk to locate the installation....
    PLEASE HELP ME!!! =(

Does Disk Utility still see the drive? If so, did you format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)? (Select the formatted volume, with whatever name you gave it, in Disk Utility and look at the Format info at the bottom of the window.) Also in Disk Utility, select the drive itself, not the volume, and see what the Partition Map Scheme says... should be GUID if you want to install Mac OS X on it.
