Clean Format Mac Pro 3,1

I have old Mac Pro, 3,1 Dual Core Xeon Processor. I am never able to clean format(Not Upgrade) with Snow Leopard 10.6.4. Which OS Version is compatible with my model for clean format ?

Thanks a lot...
For now I use this method : "just take the system drive out of the old Mac Pro and put it into the 8-core to clean format and install."
But I dont want to depend on 8 core always. Anyways sir, I'm downloading Mac OSX 10.5.6. If booting from this disc might help on my Dual Core.
Thanks a lot

    Hi
I have an Apple Mac Pro operating on Mac OS X Version 10.7.5. I participated in a few surveys a while back and now my mac is overrun with ads and requests that stop me from viewing whatever internet browser I use.
How do I safely clean my Mac of all this junk?
    Thanks

  • Syncing my iPad to my formatted Mac Pro. I just need photos and videos sync.

I always synced my iPad to my Mac Pro. Recently I installed an SSD and therefore I did a new install of Lion. The only things I want so sync are Movies (I made with iMovie) an Photos. I don't need the apps on my mac since I can re-download them from the iCloud.
I activated this new Install of Lion for my Apple ID / iPad and I am able to sync Photos with iPad. But whenever I check the Box for Syncing Movies I get the notice that all my data will be deleted from the device.
So will everything be deleted as soon I click OK and click Sync? I read somewhere that only movies and music will be deleted. But I want to keep all Settings and Games with their settings.
Hope there is an easy solution for this
Thank you in Advance for any advice!
P.S.: I still have my Hard Drive with my old Lion installation flying around. I waited to format it and use it for Time-Machine until I knew that I copied all of files I need to the new Hard Drive.
P.S.S: I read the other day that since the newest Version of iTunes someone doesnt have to sync all the apps from iPad to mac...

  • Any safe ways to clean the mac pro?

Hello i was just wondering if any recommend cleaner that i can clean my mac?

Cartainly not any of the so called "cleaning" applications.
In my testing of them I found them to be worthless or dangerous or sometimes both.
Instead what I use is OmniDiskSweeper. It tells me the names of the files and folders using the most disk space. Once I know that I can decide what needs to be moved and what needs to be delete.

  • Using compressed air to clean inside mac pro

hello. i wanted to clean the dust inside my mac (especially around the RAM and graphics card) and wanted to know if you guys think its ok to use a can of compressed air to do this with. i've blown around inside before but i cant get all the dust that way.
    thx

I have a humidifier in the office. That seems fine.
But I want to add an air purifier which hasion units (which can be left off).
To get that last 1% seems impossible, that thought this would work (which just ordered after reviewing this thread):
+Honeywell’s HFD-110 QuietClean tower air purifier offers superior air-cleaning power with HEPA performance. The permanent filter removes up to 99 percent of airborne particles such as dust, pollen, smoke, and pet dander, returning cleaner, fresher air to your room. Compared to ionic air purifiers, the filter from the HFD-110 captures 12 times more pollutants+

I like your approach and caution! I've heard (and felt) those dry winter static charges are deadly - I accidentally zapped a USB device once.

  • HT3226 how do I clean dust from inside Mac Pro?

I have compressed air, but I know it also can leave some residue, even when it is held upright (never ever use compressed air from a can held other than upright!). But is there something like a mini-vacuum cleaner? I don't want to blow the dust and cat hair further into the machine. When using compressed air it tends to blow it everywhere...what about compressed air plus holding, nearby, the operating end of a vacuum cleaner hose?

I have just cleaned my Mac Pro. Yes you are on the right track. I pulled out the processor assembly at the bottom, the SuperDrive tray at the top (both very easy), and the graphics card (at little bit harder),  and with compressed air in one hand, and vacuum cleaner in the other, I blowed and vacuumed out all the dust, there was heaps!
As others have suggested, use the compress air conservatively and in brief bursts, and only when the vacuum can't get to or dislodge some dust. I've had one graphics card fail due to the build up of dust in his fan fins, so I recommend getting it out and cleaning those little fins - which will probably be clogged with dust.
My Mac Pro now runs much quieter, and happier I suspect.

  • Is it necessary to use a cleaner such as Onyx to clean a mac?

Is it necessary to use a cleaner such as Onyx to clean a Mac Pro?

Certainly not a routine necessity. If you are having problems then by all means but use with care - take the time to understand what it can do. And the more routine stuff is handled by OSX anyway.

  • SSD & HDD 2 drive format query Mac Pro 3.1

    Hi
Can't seem to get a straight answer to this question anywhere else so am turning to anyone here that can help.
I currently have my original 320 gig drive in my Mac Pro 3.1.
I want to add an SSD and format it so that its the boot drive and contains the programs and nothing else.  The 320 gig drive will house all the 'other stuff' (photos, vids etc)
I don't want to migrate anything over - I basically want to start with two empty drives - SSD for boot and programs and 320 Gig drive for stuff.
I just want to know the best practice for this.  Do I have to wipe 320 gig first as its currently the boot, then add SSD in to the computer.  Do one at a time?  Both together?  I've been used to having one hard drive all these years and am having problems working out best way to do.
I've asked elsewhere and people keep telling me to migrate stuff over from the 320 Gig drive. I don't want to do this - I want to start with two fresh drives and put everything back on manually (tedious, I know, but thats the way I want to do it)
Any help in this matter greatly appreciated

you want simple? just buy a 500GB $225 Samsung EVO
    http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-75E500B-AM/dp/B00OBRE5UE/
There use to be, and still can be, reasons to split the OS and apps from the data drives.
You want speed, then even SATA III with 500MB/sec read/writes, or XP941 with 900MB/sec writes, and 1000MB/sec reads cannot be beat. And you could not fit data onto or justify the cost when an SSD was too small and when 500GB cost $1500.
SSD Blade Drive for "Classic" Mac Pro
Most PCIe cards costs $79-299 and add a level of complexity that the XP941 adapter does not though.
But you do this all the time, but just never had a dedicated system boot drive before. When 15K SCSI drives were small and fast and ideal, and higher cost, the whole idea of using cheaper drives for data came to desktop. It was used already before then on other systems for years.
Using the drive bays, SATA II and 250MB/sec is still an improvement. But even new 4TB drives are 150MB/sec and above. Back when 320GB drives were used they were not even able to achieve 100MB/sec, more like 80MB/sec. And SSD has a lot of other benefits. So yes today's SSD will make a difference.
I would just clone to 500GB SSD and try it! your last clean install was less than a year ago and yet still using older drives that are slow. Small SSDs have not without firmware and controller changes in the last two years able to perform as fast as the 250GB and larger. Larger SSD, more channels. An SSD has 4 channels on 128GB but 8 channels on 250GB which can all act simultaneous and concurrently to shovel I/O. Plus near-zero seeks and access times, and 90,000+ I/Os per second.
128GB $80 will work and make a difference though if price is the main concern and not speed. Also, with an SSD free unused space is more important. A deleted file is not "deleted" and the SSD "page" (NAND) is not freed up until it is trimmed.

  • How do I clean up a SLOW Mac Pro?

Hi - Finally time to clean up this Mac Pro.  It's gettting slower and slower.
May I please ask for your suggestions?
    Thank you

    Usually you don't
What does slow mean or behavior, what apps.
I wish I had $1 for every such question I see, more so on OS X forum. But also earlier today -
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3790641?tstart=0
Do a clean install after you format a new drive and then after all the updates and insuring it works use Setup Assistant.
    There is no magic bullet.
Maybe do two Safe Boots. Repair the disk drive. =
Maybe you already deleted all the browser cache.
Move the home folder to another drive.
Add more RAM. Buy an SSD.
Unplug and disconnect all the devices other than kb and mouse.
Mac Pro normally don't slow down over time unless you have crashed and froze and haven't repaired the boot drive. Or you have been using the same system drive through two full OS upgrades. A new OS is great time to buy and use a new drive and keep the old one handy as dual boot backup.

  • If you format in Guid for Intel Macs, Apple partition for PPC Macs for Boot drives, then why do my PPC Hard drives Boot in my 2007 Mac Pro, what gives?

I recently purchased a 2007 Mac Pro for a song, swapped the CPU's for octo chipsets and proceeded to wait for new Hdd's in the mail. I was told the Hard drives in my old G5 would not be bootable unless they're in Guid format. Disc Utility confirmed to use the specific maps as well and yet all of my 2006 PPC Power Mac G5 Hard drives boot in my MP without a hitch, although a few none universal apps do not work. So what am I missing, does it really matter which Apple partion map to choose from or is this a fluke?...

all of my 2006 PPC Power Mac G5 Hard drives boot in my MP without a hitch
Yes, and what version of Mac OS  are they booting?

  • Disk utility reports "Device could not be opened" - error when trying to format a new drive in a Mac Pro 1,1

    MacPro 1,1 Quadcore 3 GHz (2006 "Woodcrest")
    32 GB RAM
    ATI Radeon HD 5770
    OS X 10.7.5 Lion
I have encountered the following behavior when trying to format a new drive with disk utility. This description has also been send via the Mac Pro feedback as a bug report to Apple.
On searching the web and forums with this particular error message and behaviour I could not find any usful results. So maybe the following description may be helpful for some users.
    Best regards.
    1. Drive Bay 1 contains the original 250 GB Startupdisk. It works without errors.
    2. Drive Bays 3 and 4 contain each a WD Caviar Black 2 TB SATA 3 HDD. They work without errors.
    3. I have purchased a third WD Caviar Black 2 TB HDD.
    4. In Drive Bay 2 there has been a Seagate 750 GB HDD, which worked in conjunction with all the other drives without error.
    5. I exchanged the Seagate HDD in Drive Bay 2 with the new WD Caviar Black 2 TB HDD.
    6. On starting the system, it will report to initialize the new drive.
    7. On trying to initialize the new drive with disk utility it reports the error [translated from German] "Erasing of the volume has failed. The device could not be opened."
    8. I thought that the drive is faulty. Thus I created an RMA-Case at WD. They exchanged the drive without problems.
    9. On getting the exchanged WD Caviar Black 2 TB drive I put it in Drive Bay 2 as before.
    10. On trying to erase and format the exchange drive I got the same error message "Drive could not be opened."
10.1 On selecting the physical drive in the devices list, disk utility reports all information in the bottom area of its window as usual, e. g. hard disk description, connection bus, type and place, capacity, write status, SMART-status, partition scheme.
10.1 On leaving that drive selected in the devices list and clicking the info-button, disk utility will also report additional information as usual, e. g. Name, Type, partition scheme, media-identification, media name, media type, device tree, … , number of relocated sectors, etc.. All this information appears to be valid, as can be compared to the other devices information inside the other Drive Bays. Also the disk numbering scheme appears to be standard - 4 HDDs give the numbering disk0, disk1, disk2, disk3.
10.2 From that information I conclude that the SATA-bus and connectors electrically work properly, the drive has spun up and can be accessed by the system normally.
    11. I powered down the computer, took out the HDDs from Drive Bays 3 and 4 and put the caddy with the new exchange drive in Drive Bay 4 [Maybe, I could have also just left it alone in Drive Bay 2, or 3].
    12. After powering on the system, disk utility will quick format the exchange drive without any error message. Also, when erasing again by selecting the option to write zeros to the drive, disk utility will finish without error.
    13. After disk utility finished formatting, I put back the original drives into Drive Bay 3 and 4 and put the now newly formatted drive back into Drive Bay 2.
    14. After switching on the computer the system start and login proceeds without any error message. All drives appear as expected on the desktop.

If anyone is reading this still looking for what caused the issue and how to fix it here is what I discovered.
The antivirus program our company uses, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, was causing some of the PDF files not to open. After troubleshooting the different modules and settings the culprit was..
Scan SSL in Privacy Control Settings. Turning it OFF solved the problem and all the PDF files that previously would not open now open just fine. This issue has been sent to Bitdefender for them to review. If you use a different antivirus program and are having this issue try locating the Scan SSL setting and see if turning it off solves the problem.

    Ciao,

  • Brand new to forum.  Can a Maxtor IV One Touch external hard drive previously used on a PC be formatted to work with my Mac Pro OSX  version 10.6.8?

I've never participated in a forum before; so, please let me know if I'm going about it wrong.
My question is this:  Can a Maxtor One Touch 4 external hard drive that was previously used on a PC be set up for use on my Mac Pro?  I'm preparing to upgrade the Mac to the most recent software version and it was suggested I back everything up first.
I reformatted the hard drive so it is currently empty.  There are icons on my Mac desktop for One Touch 4 and Maxtor Manager but other than that nothing appears to be working.  There are no drives showing in the Maxtor Manager so I suspect that's where I need to start.  However, I don't know enough about what I'm doing to move ahead on my own and I don't want to screw anything up.  If anyone knows the steps I should take next, I'd sure appreciate hearing from you.

I am embarrassed how simple that was.  I did warn you that I'm technologically challenged; I'm pretty sure that proved it.
The external hard drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). The link you provided indicates the external drive will work with Time Machine.  I've never worked with Time Machine and don't know what my next step should be.  Would you please walk me through it?
Your help is greatly appreciated.  From the points you have accumulated, I can tell you have helped many others and I thank you for your generosity.

  • Problems installing windows on a clean Mac Pro internal drive - issues and questions

    Hey,
I have a Mac Pro mid 2010 with the following drive configurations:
3x120GB SSD in a RAID-0 as Boot (OS X 10.8.6) and SSD Scratch (working files)
3x4TB HDD in a RAID-0 as Master (data) and HDD Scratch (downloads)
1x100GB SSD (Spare...to install windows on)
I have literally tried every possible way of installing Windows 8 on that single SSD...both using bootcamp and without.
I can get it installed and working, install all the drivers/updates/software...involving multiple reboots into windows. Everything seems fine, and i shut down and boot into OS X, which works perfectly as expected. BUT, when i try and boot into Windows again (using <option> key at startupand selecting the windows volume, called "EFI Boot" which i did not name) I can log in and start using apps and then 20-40 seconds later i get the BSOD.
I can't for the life of me figure out why.
It's the easiest thing in the world to partition a single OSX drive to boot windows ON THE SAME DRIVE, but i can't seem to boot stably into a standaloe internal drive.
NOTE: I prepare the Windows drive by formatting the entire thing to "Free Space" using disk utility in Mac OS X, and can see that there are no partitions (EFI or otherwise) on the drive. Then I pull all the other drives except the target drive, reboot with a Windows 8 USB drive (created by BootCamp Assistant on my macbook air, because apparently some genius thought that task was too complicated for a Mac Pro...jks) and install from there.  The funny part is that i can pick out the target drive in the windows setup, it's registering as 1 disk/partition of UNALLOCATED SPACE, as expected, but there is a warming that windows cannot be installed on this drive because my computer does not support booting to this disk, and that i should check that it's controller is enabled in the BIOS.....which to the best of my knowledge is not used by intel-macs, which use UEFI. But i can still click "Next", so I do and install Windows and boot to this drive, restarting and installing software updates and drivers as mentioned above.
The BSOD seems to pop up only after i've rebooted to Mac OS X and then try to go BACK to Windows 8.
The version of windows 8 and install USB were checked using my macbook air, and they work flawlessly. ASLO that warning about not being able to boot to the drive during windows setup isn't present.
I'm wondering if the fact the the RAID volumes are a software RAID, using Disk Utility in OSX is causing windows some issues...which makes no sense.
I'll keep playing, but I'm not confident I'm ever going to find a solution.
    Somebody be my hero...

    Hey Hatter,
    Another question for you:
I can't seem to use system preferences>>startup disk to boot into windows. When I select windows and then restart i get a black "BIOS-like" screen which then cuts out and a message is displayed that says "there is no bootable disc"
This stumped me, because I know i can boot into windows from the boot screen (holding down option and selecting "EFI Boot" which apparently is what my windows drive is called.
because of my Mac OSX Raid arrays, i had to install windows by formatting a drive to HFS+ (GUID) pratition table, then repartition to "Free Space" then using an install usb that i made with my macbook air, pull all my other drives and install by selecting the usb drive to boot from.
I went into disk utility to see if I can repair the disk, and disk utility says that the disk has to EFI partition and that we won;t be able to boot from it....which is very confusing because i can boot from it.
Windows 8 apparentl;y uses UEFI from my research....so i'm utterly stumped.
I beleive this is also the cause of my newly purchased graphics card Mac Edition HD 7950, throwing me a BSOD when i select to boot in windows from the boot menu...
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you use Windows program to partition the Hard Drive, the Apple partition gets destroyed.
