Clean inside a SuperDrive?

Is there a recommended product or method for cleaning the laser, etc. of a SuperDrive?

I have seen they have statements about not being compatible with slot loading drives and there is this from another forum:
"Of course there are many cleaning DVD on the market, but I would be loathe to subject my SuperDrive slot loading mechanism to one of those. It could easily get stuck and do far more damage to the drive."

  • Using compressed air to clean inside mac pro

hello. i wanted to clean the dust inside my mac (especially around the RAM and graphics card) and wanted to know if you guys think its ok to use a can of compressed air to do this with. i've blown around inside before but i cant get all the dust that way.
    thx

I have a humidifier in the office. That seems fine.
But I want to add an air purifier which hasion units (which can be left off).
To get that last 1% seems impossible, that thought this would work (which just ordered after reviewing this thread):
+Honeywell’s HFD-110 QuietClean tower air purifier offers superior air-cleaning power with HEPA performance. The permanent filter removes up to 99 percent of airborne particles such as dust, pollen, smoke, and pet dander, returning cleaner, fresher air to your room. Compared to ionic air purifiers, the filter from the HFD-110 captures 12 times more pollutants+

I like your approach and caution! I've heard (and felt) those dry winter static charges are deadly - I accidentally zapped a USB device once.

  • Macbook Pro doesn't get CD/DVD inside the superdrive

    Hi every body!

Less than two months after that, I have the next problem: when I want insert any CD/DVD on the SuperDrive, It doesn't accept it (it doesn't get the CD/DVD inside the Mac).
But if I leave the CD/DVD in the Superdrive and then I suspend and wake up the laptop, then the superdrive get the CD/DVD inside! It also happens when I restart the laptop with de CD/DVD in the Superdrive.
I have intented to restart the SMC but it doesn't work. I can't turn on the computer and then insert a CD/DVD.
    Someone can help me?
(Sorry about my english, I'm spanish xD)

The collect policy depends on the country and it doesn't matter where and how you bought it, every legit purchase is backed with a year of global apple warranty .. if you suspect the same , I suggest you take yours to for a quick walk to the apple store

  • Cleaning inside of the iMac

wonering if anybody out there has cleaned the inside of the mac. clearing out dust.

I purchased my iMac G5 in December of '04. I installed 2GB of RAM within a couple weeks. At the time as to be expected the inside of the mac was clean. At the beginning of October of '06 I installed an airport card in my iMac. To my surprise when opening it I found it as clean as when it was first purchased. The only part that showed any type of dust was the inside of the rear cover. There was only a very slight hint of dust there. I wiped it down with a dust cloth and then made sure that there wasn't any static electricity left behind. I have both a dog and a cat and the PCs I owned before always had a lot of dust and dander in them within months. Needless to say I was very shocked when I found next to nothing in my iMac. The board of the iMac as well as the fans looked very clean. I didn't mess with it any further.

  • Cleaning inside built-in isight

Not sure if this has been posted before, but the other day I opened up my macbook and noticed that there's a white speck inside the lens of my built-in isight. I don't know how it got there, I don't do anything rough with my computer. It really looks like a paint chip got in there.
Is there any way I can clean it out myself? My warranty is already over and the computer is only 2 years old, I'm not going to buy a new one yet.
If I do have to send it in, how much is it going to kill my wallet?
    Thanks for the help.

Rather than take a chance on damaging the Mac, I would have it serviced by an Apple Technician.
Contact Apple or your Apple-Authorized Service Provider. The Service people can give you a meaningful cost estimate so you can decide whether to have the service performed or to consider camera alternatives:

  • Can you clean inside an iMac G5?

Yesterday I was looking at the back of my iMac, connecting a firewire cable, and I noticed that there was quite a bit of dust and stuff around that little air intake. I easily wiped it off, but it made me wonder - how dusty is it inside?
I can easily remove the back panel and have acess to all the fan areas, and other places where there might be also of dust, though I've never had the back panel off before.
So, do these things have a tendency to get very dusty inside, and if so, should I open it up and clean it? Or is it not worth the trouble?
    Thanks,
    John

If you have the iSight version, Apple does not recommend you to open it as I was told by an Apple employee in live chat. I had asked if I coud open it and dust it off, like every other computers I've ever owned, but was told not to. This model has no DIY part replacement program, and should only be opened by Apple representatives.
Again, if you have the iSight version, you should not open it as this could void your warranty or AppleCare program.

  • Dusty iMac G5, will cleaning inside slow the fans?

I've noticed in the past few weeks that the fans in my iMac definately sound louder than they were previously and i also recently opened up the RAM slot at the bottom and there was a lot of dust in there as its always been kept and used in a dusty room. I've tried resetting the SMU but this hasn't made a difference to the fans. Is it likely that the dust will be causing the higher fan speeds, and will it pose a heat problem in the long term? If so can i clean it inside myself or should i take it to an apple centre?
    Stats:
CPU fan speeds of 1640 to 1700 rpm idle, 2000 when intensive
    CPU temp 60/61 C idling, peaks at 72/73 C
Processor is/has always been set on Highest
    iStat Pro idling:
    Temperatures (C)
    CPU: 61
    GPU: 68
    Incoming Air: 20
    HD: 44
    GPU Ambient: 27
    OD: 38
    Mem Controller: 77
    Fans
    CPU: 1650 RPM
    HD: 1450 RPM
    OD: 1330RPM

    Hi there,
I don't think the temps are all that out of line. Compared to my iSight, only the CPU fan speed is significantly higher, everything else you show is only slightly higher or the same. The higher CPU Fan speed is probably explained to you keeping your Processor on 'Highest', you might want to change this to 'Auto' and see if that helps.
Other than trying to clean the inside of your iMac, I would suggest looking into running the Maintenance Scripts here: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/maintscripts.html - I use the Terminal method, I have noticed my machine runs quieter, cooler and more consistent. I highly recommend trying this.
As far as cleaning, I cannot imagine how you would remove the back yourself w/o causing some light damage to the Mac. I talked to an Apple Specialist about this, and he said it can be done but you need a special tool to remove back, the back is only 'pressed into place'.
    Good luck, Rick

  • Glass cleaner inside screen Satellite L755=5246

I was cleaning my laptop screen and some of the cleaner got inside my screen......should I just let it be and dry out?  it is staining a bit of my bottom left corner

I would make sure that it is COMPLETELY Dry prior to turning the power back on. I have seen the backlight fail prematurely from having glass cleaner sprayed directly on a screen.  Always ensure that you spray the RAG first and only use enough glass cleaner to get it clean.

  • Cleaning inside of keyboard

hello could someone tell me how to clean my imac keyboard. I would like to clean the inside of the keyboard, should i take it apart and what type of tool would
i need to do so thank you

The keys pop off relatively easy so you can clean it, the space bar and the buttons with the metal are hard to put back on. Also make sure to have a picture of the keyboard available so you put the keys back in the tight place.

  • Performance deteriorating even after reformat/reinstall + cleaning inside

    Hey all,
I've been noticing a decline in performance in my 2007 MBP. When running previously working CPU-Intensive projects in Reason/Logic, the processors use up much more processing power than before, causing the programs to cease playback.
I tried resetting the PRAM and NVRAM, with no luck, so I reformatted and did a fresh re-install of 10.5 (via firewire from another MBP in TDM mode as my superdrive has become somewhat DVD-challenged ^_^) but I've only noticed a slight improvement and the projects are still overloading my CPU.
I opened up the mac and found a lot of dust buildup on the heatsinks, with the right fan vent being totally blocked. My computer no longer gets anywhere near as hot as it should, but I'm wondering if it could have caused some irreparable damage through overheating.
Is there anything I can do to regain lost CPU performance?

I just took it to an AASP who ran the test, and it didn't fail =(
    I was hoping. Oh well.
I took it back home, and thought i'd try it with my old HD. Forgot to copy over any of the test files from my new HD so i reconnected it without rescrewing the case, and everything started magically working, my projects weren't stopping mid-song anymore!
    Interesting.
Doing a little dance of joy, I then rescrewed the case, turned it on, and its back to being a glorified paperweight again.
This is with the old HD that was working fine with the case apart?
The case is in quite bad nick, it's been everywhere with me for the last 4 years so maybe it's become warped, and the fixing screws are applying pressure on some plugs/sockets/devices that's causing it to misbehave. That's the only idea i have right now.
I'm gna try the old HD again with the test files that should run fine, just to rule out the HD.
    I'm truly baffled!
Far from being baffled, It sounds like you're on the right track. The case putting pressure on cable/connection/component was not uncommon on the old TiBooks. I haven't heard much about that with these machines (beyond the battery affecting the keyboard/trackpad cable), but it's definitely a possibility. As is HD. As is HD cable/connector.

  • Cleaning inside of flat studio display

I was given a 15" flat studio display. With it came some bugs who decided to crawl in the back of the monitor and die. Although it looks like it's easy enough to open and clean, I am hesitant. I have an allen wrench ready, any suggestions? Is this a bad idea? I haven't been able to find anything on the topic.
    Thanks!

I would suggest having it looked at. You don't want to try and pull that display apart.

  • Vibration in superdrive

I have some regular vibrations inside the superdrive when reading DVD's on my iMac (doing like "brrrr-rr"-brrrr-rr" regularly); Vibrations are really annoying. Is it the reader or the laser ? I don't know...
Is there any way to change that or is it normal ? Should I do a cleaning (I have this mac for about 8 months and I didn't use a lot the superdrive so...) ?
I would really feel great if somebody could answer my question, and I thank him/her in advance.

This steady vibration is something that has happened occasionally ever since I put a replacement superdrive in this machine a month or two after I bought it back in '04.
However, it's been doing it a lot in the last couple weeks, and now all of a sudden it's decided to stop recognizing blank DVD-R media altogether (although it appears to still read already-burned discs). I guess I'm going to have to drop some change on the replacement dual-layer drive that's available now. Kind of $ucks, that you can't expect more than a couple years out of a lot of hardware these days. Like there isn't enough crap going into landfills.

  • Looking to have my 2 y o macbook pro cleaned (dust removal and such). I live in Loughborough(Leicester), where should I take it?

I tend to ramble when it comes to asking questions so I'll just sum it up briefly before I add any further details:
I am looking to have my macbook pro (I believe late 2011 version-out of warranty) cleaned inside out: dust removed, keyboard cleaned all that stuff-not by me. I would like to know where should I take it for this job in either of these locations: Loughborough, London or Maidenhead, and also (if anybody knows from their experience) how much would this cost? Lastly, in Apple Stores do you get a warranty for the service they provide?
Now for my blather...I mean extended version:
I had my macbook pro for 2 years now and I must admit I didn't take good care of it, as I maybe should have. By this I mean I never dropped it or spilled anything on it, but I'm pretty sure it got clogged up inside with a lot of dust by now and maybe some crumbs underneath my keyboard as well, so I'm looking to have it cleaned inside out- by a professional.
I never took it to a service before, so I really have no idea where's the best place to take it. I am not familiar with terms such as "genius bars" and after googling apple authorised services in the UK, I didn't end up with anything "certain"
Location-wise, I am studying in Loughborough (Leicestershire), but my dad works in Maidenhead and I'll be visiting him next week. I will also be for a day in London (although it'll be a Sunday- December 21st), so any service around these locations will work for me.
I would also like to point out one thing: I know some might suggest to clean it myself, but when it comes to anything IT-ish (especially a £900 macbook pro, I would rather leave it in the hands of a professional); even if let's say I cleaned the keyboard, I would still want to have the dust removed from the inside- and I am certainly not doing that. I'm a 19 year old university student with 0 experience and my time doesn't allow me to become an "apple genius" overnight.
Thank you for taking the time to go through my question!

Your MBP should be able to support 8GB (unless yours is an early 08 then you're stuck at 6GB).  I upgraded my old late 08 MB to 8GB.
SSD are a plus if you like speed.  Having 8GB and an SSD will improve the performance of your MBP.
I like OCZ SSD products but have heard some issues with older MBP.
Sandisk, Crucial and Kingston SSD tends to be more reliable and less compaibility issues with older MBP.
    Hope that helps..

    Hi rcstipe,
    Welcome to the HP forums!
I see you have a Photosmart B209a and are wanting to know how to clean the printhead via the software on Windows 8. I will definitely do my best to assist you with this.
There is full feature software for your printer for Windows 8, so as you would have with the few previous versions of Windows, it's done through the HP Solution Center. If you don't have the HP software installed yet, please download and run the HP Printer Install Wizard to get the software installed.
If you're not sure where to locate the clean printhead function once the software is installed, please have a look at Step four: Clean the printhead under Solution six: Print and evaluate a print quality diagnostic report and troubleshoot defects in this Fixing Ink Streaks, Faded Prints, and Other Common Print Quality Problems document to see where to locate it.

  • Cleaning

My computer needs to be cleaned and I want to spend the money on a good professional cleaning that removes all dust. Can anyone recommend a good place to go or the best way to go about cleaning my macbook pro?

You risk more in damage to the machine taking it apart than you would gain anything with such a cleaning.
My last MacBook Pro went 7 years and never needed anything, replaced the hard drive for a larger one and it was all clean inside.
I suspect you might have a obsession that is getting the best of you in this case.
