Clean Install + Backed up user folder, can't replace default
Before migrating to Leopard I copied my User folder to a backup disc. Now I'm on Leopard and I can't copy over my folder. I get an error message stating, "nick" can't be modified or deleted because it is required by Mac OS X"
Help?

Yes, the folders have the same name. Could I copy it over using a different name, and then create an account with that name?
Theoretically, yes, but I'm not 100% sure.
Like I said in my previous post, I would just drag over the data in your User folder and save yourself the headache. Plus, I'm not sure if copying over an entire Tiger User folder to a Leopard machine will a) work, and b) is the best idea.

I want to do a clean install of Mountain Lion. Can I do this without a DVD version of the OS, and can I restore only specific things like iPhoto and iTunes libraries from Time Machine backup.
Mountain Lion is only available as a download, so there is no DVD to purchase. What you can do is download ML and then stop it from installing as soon as it's on your drive. From there you can make your own bootable ML flash drive.
When your purchase and download Mountain Lion, it will end up in the Applications folder and automatically want to install. Press Command+Q to stop the install and exit. The installer will remain on the hard drive.
1) Right click on the installer and choose "Show Package Contents".
2) A folder will open on the desktop. Drill down to Contents > SharedSupport and double click the disk image InstallESD.dmg to mount it on the desktop.
3) From here you can either burn a DVD, or copy the contents to a flash drive. Personally, I would strongly suggest using an 8 GB flash drive formatted as Mac OS Extended. You will be able to boot to it in about 30 seconds instead of at least 10 minutes off of a DVD, and it will install MUCH faster. Make sure the flash drive is empty, or you've copied anything off it it you need as it will need to be erased.
4) Don't just drag and drop the contents you see in the open disk image to the flash drive. It won't boot that way as it will be missing some hidden files. Open Disk Utility. You will something similar to this:
5) To accomplish the above, highlight either the flash drive's single partition (as I did), or the item at the bottom (Mac OS X Install ESD), which is what you will see with the Lion disk image mounted. It doesn't matter which one you pick. You'll then have the option to select the Restore tab towards the upper right. Drag and drop from the left column into the Source and Destination fields as shown above. If you've already erased the flash drive, you can uncheck the box. Click the Restore button.
You've just made your own bootable Mountain Lion USB Flash drive installer. Once you boot to the flash drive, run Disk Utility first to erase the drive you want Mountain Lion on, then continue with the install.
As far as restoring your iPhone and iTunes libraries, I couldn't tell you. So I wouldn't do any of the above until someone else chimes in with a way to do that after a clean install of ML. -
Safe to move back a user folder after clean install
After a couple of years of cluttering up my system, i finally decided to erase my disc and do a clean install. I first backed everything up to an external hard drive with carbon copy cloner. Then i reinstalled the system and did all the updates. I reinstalled the major programs and moved back some precious favorites like photoshop plug ins. All is good. I'm happy to have left behind allot of clutter. My computer is like new again.
My user profile was recreated and of course the shared user is there.
But i need to move back my son's user files. How can i do this safely?
I hesitated to just drag his folders back, thinking i might mess up the permissions or something. Should I recreate him as a user first? If i do that will he still have the correct permissions to open his files when i move them over?
Please don't tell me i messed up my son's account!
thanks
kaylaoooh big sigh of relief!
you saved my son's files and my face!
he does not use my computer much, but when he does it's important to him. he uses my G5 to work on his video. he's staying with a friend for the semester, taking video classes so when he gets back I'm sure he'd want everything as he left it so he can do new things with old footage and work on new projects with everything as he left it.
Because he doesn't use it that often, he won't have all that junk in his library file like i did. So i'll copy it back whole
thanks for the quick response. the folks here are always so generous with their knowledge.

Backing up Users folder for Erase Install
Hi,
I need to do an Erase Install because of a disk error that Disk Utility cannot fix. I've backed up my iTunes Library and some other files, including Mac OS X combo update, to DVDs. My question is about the advice at this site:
[http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106941] concerning backing up and restoring the Users folder manually. It recommends enabling and using root user for this and Step 5 says: "+Copy the User folder to your backup storage location."+ Does that mean I can drag the User folder to the backup DVD in root user mode? Or could I drag and drop the User folder without going into root user, and then after reinstallation restore the User folder the same way? I am the owner/administrator and there is one other user. I don't have an outside drive or cloning software and anyway, cloning a faulty hard drive might not help much.
RegardsOr could I drag and drop the User folder without going into root user, and then after reinstallation restore the User folder the same way?
Ahem, that +may work+ as I've done it, but then I've always had Root User enabled first thing after disabling Spotlight & Widgits!
So, I wouldn't count on it.
I'd get an external drive and DiskWarrior, which handles most of these problems with a breeze... asap! -
Here's the last crash report from failure to reinstall a TM backup. Was running Yosemite and things went sideways a couple of days ago. Got through a reinstall attempt and it was working. Ended up going through all the reset hoops and flashing question marks to stalled home screen to flashing question marks with no progress. Resorted to sock Leopard disk and a basic drive erase. I have been able to get to app the store but I cannot seem to upgrade to Yosemite. My main concern is getting all my photos, movies etc back up and running. I haven't tried importing my photos folder out of TM and into old IPhoto. Not sure if the pictures will work with the old OS? Clean install of Yosemite somehow?

Somehow got to a utilities window on a reboot and was able to reinstall Yosemite and then back up from Time Machine. Funny, IPhoto didn't come over and when I opened TM there was only the current day as an option for reinstall. I was able to install iPhoto 9.6 from the app store and then create a new library and then import from the TM backup iPhoto folder. Interesting. Don't give up.

Clean Install-Backing Up and Restore methods
Hello,
I need to do a complete "clean install" of Leopard on my G4 Dual 1Ghz MDD. I need to back up Mail, iTunes, iCal, Address Book, Movies, Photos and my network settings.
I don't have a spare HD to back up to but do have DVD/CDs.
What is the best approach to take in my situation? Thanks! The best option is to make a clone of your existing drive to an external drive, but since you cannot do that I would try the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update. -
Re-installing an old user folder
Ok, this has to be fairly simple but I coldn't finf it in a search.
I've got a 700p.
My laptop hard drive crashed. Luckily, I have relatively recent backup of my personal folder. I re-installed the desktop software (desktop 6.2) using a temporary user name. I'd like to put my old user folder in the appropriate place and change to that user.
Here's the problem(s):
1. I don't remember where the user file goes in 6.2
2. I've tried a few places, but when I try to look for the user account I can't get the old one to show up so I can switch to it.
Any ideas?

The backed up data is from 6.2, and I'm running XP.
I think I found the XP folder location:

I put my old folder there, but I still can't get the desktop to recognize it's there.

Clean install: backing up, cloning, efficiency
I want to do a clean install of Leopard on my MBP, and have a few questions:
1. I want to make a copy of my current HD and store it on an empty HD on my Quicksilver, but when I connect to the Quicksilver via Firewire, the only drive visible is the startup drive. Is it possible to access the empty drive in the Quicksilver via Firewire.
2. I will, of course, want to reinstall my extra apps; is this merely a matter of "dragging" them back from the Quicksilver HD to the MBP clean-install HD, or will I need to reinstall from the application CDs?
3. I have read that people are using the "Migrate user" function after a clean install, but if one does this, does it not put back ALL files, including the ones I want to make sure are gone, such as preferences for applications no longer used, on the newly formatted drive?
I guess a brief primer on the best way to do a clean install would be in order, and thanks in advance.when I connect to the Quicksilver via Firewire, the only drive visible is the startup drive
Only the Master drive is available with FireWire Target Disk Mode. You could put the MacBook in Target Disk Mode and do the copy with the Quicksilver.
I will, of course, want to reinstall my extra apps
It is safest to reinstall, rather than copy because there may be other files besides the application itself. For example, there are the receipts for the iLife applications, so Software Update can tell if they need updating. To install the applications that came on the MacBook, boot from the hard drive, install the applications from the discs that came with the computer, then run Software Update to get any update needed for Leopard compatibility. -
Clean Install With Custom User Id
Hello
From experience I am aware of problems in our network when we have 2 users with accounts which have the same User Id. For this reason I have always tried to ensure each User on our network has a unique User Id.
I am upgrading several User's iMacs to Mountain Lion and I will format their drives and perform a clean install. Is it possible, using Terminal, to perform a clean install but specify a custom User Id?
Many thanks.
ChrisIt would probably be easier to change your Apple ID password. This would allow you to continue downloading past iTunes/App Store purchases.
Apple ID - Manage
Do you have a backup? If not, backup before doing anything because an erase and reinstall will cause you to lose all your data.
If your MacBook came with Mountain Lion pre-installed, you would have to purchase a copy from the App Store, but you can probably avoid that.
Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart) or hold down the option key during a restart and select Recovery Volume. Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions. Then select the Erase tab. Format is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Erase and then reinstall the OS.
OS X Recovery
When you reboot, use Setup Assistant to restore your data. -
How do I reinstall backed up user folder after erase and reinstall of 10.4?
I had to erase and reinstall 10.4 on my g4 ibook. Prior to this I backed up my user folder on an external drive. Is there and easy way to get my machine the same as it was before the OS reinstall - library settings, files etc?
Is it assumed that apple users should have another apple machine and or a spare unused firewire hard-drive for system maintenance?!? Sure, if I were running it for buisness use, I'd have a mirrored drive, break the mirror, and upgrade one half of it, but this is the machine in my bedroom! I've got to say, I've rapidly going back of apple over these update QA issues. The fixes offered by people (and I appreciate the time and effort they put in to help others) so far all seem to involve creating other systems on spare drives, or using target mode from another mac. Come on Apple! You can't seriously expect your home users to have two machines, or a spare drive (personally, any drive I have, I use in something or other! I'd consider it a waste having a drive spare just for system upgrades to my Mac). It's about time Apple posted on this subject. It's unfair to expect your userbase to support your COMERCIAL OS for free so heavily.
I bought a mini because it was cheap, and I wanted to play with OSX. I bought the next OSX release because I had grown to like OSX. Now I'm rapidly going off it. I don't want to have to buy another device just to make it safe to upgrade.
Sorry for the Rant. Simon, this isn't meant as a criticism of your response. I just feel that apple should be more proactive here, having another disk is of course a good way to go, however, it takes the old TCO a bit to high for a home/play machine imho.
Anyone from Apple care to comment? (or will you simply edit out my post... afterall that would be easier than addressing the problem). -
Clean Install gone bad.. Can't access HD now!
I recently was doing a clean install on my HD and while booted up on the Recovery Partition, I accessed the Disk Utility and formated and my system restarted and I got an error. I took the HD out of my Macbook and into an External HD Enclosure and plugged it into another Macbook and it now shows up on that Disk Utlity as Macintosh HD with no option of Partitioning the drive. I can't figure out what else to do. (FYI, its the very TOP drive, ignore the 500.11 GB and 320.07 Hard drives, The very top one listed as Macintosh HD is the one I screwed up!)
Did you have FileVault enabled on this disk? If so you must disable the user lock of FileVault:
OS X (Lion/Mountain Lion)- About FileVault 2
OS X Lion- Using FileVault 2 and Lion Recovery
Boot to the Recovery HD and open Disk Utility from the main menu:
Select the volume Macintosh HD.
In the Disk Utility toolbar, click Unlock.
Type the disk password when prompted, i.e. the login password of any unlock-enabled user on the affected Mac.
Click Unlock. -
Backup Restore after Lion clean install sets invalid user
I was recylcling an iMac ready for a new staff member and at the same time upgrading it to 10.7 Lion. So I erased the disk and did a clean install of Lion from the Apple USB drive and then did a partial restore from a Time Machine backup disk - partial because I did NOT RESTORE ALL USERS and happened to exclude the user that was previously set as the default login.
On completion of the restore the computer hangs with a blank screen but is running as it beeps if you type anything - had to force down and restart.
On restart it came up with the usual user list and I successfully loggged in as the admin user so I could create a new user.
Whilst setting the new user login options I noticed that the restore had set the login user to the user who was previously set as the default login but that user had NOT been restored an no longer existed so I assume it could not boot into that user after the restore and hence the hang.
The restore utlity needs to check before setting the l;ogin info not just blindly copy it.File a bug report or enhancement request with Apple. Alternatively, turn off auto-login before restoring from TM.

After finally completing a clean install what is the BEST way to replace my data.
Please understand I moved from PC to Mac in Late 2011. Unlike windows where you have to know how it all works to use it, Mac is so simple I, to my own detriment , did not take the time to learn more than just my daily use. Been busy moving country and other crazy life stuff. I am rectifying this mistake. I did have issue with the clean install process working through with out interruption, some file issue, so had to repeat a few times.
1. completed a clean install through to completion of set up, new account etc. Machine runs amazingly better. Completed updates. Knowing Migration Assistant can deal with duplicate user issues.
Q? Do I need to run disk repair or other.
2. Thought myself ill equipped with knowledge and understanding to manually replace my data via finder. I simply do not know where things are supposed to go.
3. Tried reinstall of everything thru set up but it installed everything including all the issues I had before. Went through clean install process again.
4. With this in mind I am hesitant and very weary to use Migration Assistant to move everything back as I simply do Not know where the issue lies even if it allowed greater folder & file separation.
I have got to the stage where I am ready to recover my data which is on my backup external hard drive. The data was recovered using Time Machine.
I wish to do what is best for my machine. It is getting older and I wish to do what I can for its longevity.
Q? So what data is best recovered in which way and in what order.
5. Is it best to say do recover applications from App Store and redo all updates if required.
Then install non app store apps, e.g. Microsoft office for mac, and others thru finder.
Users thru Migration assistant etc etc.
Been learning and working on this since my last post. Lots of watching YouTube and reading for hours.
So much conflicting opinions and maybe this is due to my lack of specifics and most posts are for general use so I do understand.
Again thank you in advance. I still think Mac has it all over PC.I read thru the data migration one below however wasn't sure of its applicability given it was from 09.
Re: 2. there seems to be data I have yet to bring across. How important it is I don't know. What exactly it is I also am yet to find out. Will proceed with the downloading n stuff.
Thank you for your help on this. -
I have no idea what to do but I can't to know if I go to the apple store can they replace it? Because I physically can't use it so I have to use the multitask setting and it's really annoying!:(
For the time being use the software Home button.

Restoring desktop from backed up user folder - Time machine doesn't ??
I need to restore my desktop from a backed up copy of my user files. Went to the Genius Bar and discovered my disk was failing (Apple replaced it at No Charge! kudos) The Genius backed up my files to a folder on my external hard drive before replacing the disk and installing Leopard. Got the machine back and installed the Leopard updates to 10.5.2 and then tried to reinstall my files. The migration assistant does not recognize my folder as a viable volume to back up. Time machine does not do it either (probably since it was not created in TIme machine).
Folders inside my backup folder include: Desktop, Documents, Downloads,Library, Magazines, Movies, Music, Pictures, Public, Sites, plus the remaining files that I had stored on my desktop.
Any thoughts on how to restore these files? I noticed my application folder was not in the back up, so I imagine that I will need to restore my applications separately. The ones that I am concerned about are iTunes and iPhoto, and they were part of the Leopard image that the Genius bar installed.I have always had problems restoring from my backups. I just replaced my hard drive and did a restore and now there are no icons in the dock (all ?'s) and I cannot click on my Applications folder in any finder window. (Oh, and the fans run constantly at top speed after being on for about 3 minutes.)
This is probably the 10th restore I've done in the past couple of years and I don't think one has worked for me.
