Clean install - But then: Only 2 of 80GB found.

Hi there, this might have been asked a gazillion times before, but maybe you can help me out here.
I'm installing Solaris 9 on an amd with 256 RAM and 80Gig HD.
So far so good, I have no problem installing different setups from DVD, (my Ethernetcontrollers [Realtek] did not work, but I found a working patch for that]), during the last step, the partitioning, I am being told of 78 or so Gigs, I then partition one x86BOOT and one Solaris partition. On the Solaris Parition [at this point being around 78 Gigs] I layout only a Swap of 500 Megs and the rest to be my [ / ].
After running the installation, it boots fine etc etc.
Just that now when I look at my disk space, it tells me that of my 78Gigs, 99,9% are used and only around 0,21% [values vary a little] are left to be used.
For troubleshooting: I tried this with an IBM Drive and now even bought a new Matrox DiamondMax 9 HD.
Aaaaahh!!
If someone has the time and muse to tell me what I am doing wrong, please let me know
Thank you in advance :)
Alexis

An alternative proposal I'm going to make is to set up a new user account. It seems highly likely to me that all, or almost all of these issues are related to the account preference files in ~/Library. Certainly the iTunes issue, Safari, TextEdit, iCal etc. suggest that your account is having trouble with saving any changes to its preference files which would result in anything you tried to do being forgotten the moment the application was closed.
So for a start, make a new account, log in to it and do a couple of experiments - make some bookmarks in Safari, change some TextEdit options, open iTunes - then close and reopen them, or even restart the machine. If the changes are saved, then it's definitely an account problem and there is no need to reinstall Mac OS. Worst case scenario then would be you might need to move your documents and settings over to the new account; however it's also worth taking a couple of steps to see if the original account can be fixed. Try the above step and if it works; if so, go to /Users and right click your home folder, then 'Get Info'. Under the section dealing with permissions, ensure that your username has both read and write permissions, then use the cogwheel to apply this setting to all folders and files inside your home folder (you may need to use your password to unlock the padlock for this).
There are other things that can be attempted even before moving to a new user (or reinstalling if the new user test failed) so it's still worth checking back here in case other people suggest steps, it just depends how much time you want to invest.
As always, back up all your data before troubleshooting.

  • How to Clean Install but then retrieve & restore my Keychain and Mailboxes.

For months now, there have been a large number of irritating problems with my system - and I'm not enough of a techie to resolve them.
It is as though my machine is stuck in the past.
Spotlight doesn't index well - and fails to find up to two thirds of my files - including most of the newer ones.
Dashboard remains at the point at which I upgraded my disk drive. I know this, because a clip from Safari (a web-page with drives for sale) comes up - laboriously slowly - every time I open dashboard; when I delete the clip, it simply reappears the next time I open dashboard after a reboot. Similarly, post-it-style notes made in the Stickies app just vanish after a reboot.
When I open TextEdit, the same untitled file I was working on back in the early summer opens with it; I close it, it's back again the next time I open TextEdit. Alterations I make to Text substitution disappear the moment I close the panel.
All new bookmark additions to Safari vanish from my bookmarks when I restart Safari.
Every time I open iTunes, it thinks I am opening it for the first time. I can't tell you how many times I have agreed to their Software License.
My iCal alarms go off ad infinitum even when I turn them off and for months after the event in question.
And so on, and so on. It's like living with an Alzheimer's patient who keeps asking you what day it is.
I have twice reinstalled Snow Leopard (and rebooted my way through all those software updates) to no avail. My system - or at any rate my applications - still think it's early summer 2010 and any changes since then are forgotten; and Spotlight continues to be virtually useless.
It seems intuitive that some of these problems might be associated with individual preference files and caches for the various applications. But, even if I knew how to correct such problems, I'm concerned it might take me days - even weeks - of messing around but without solving all of my problems.
I have to say, I am tired of having half a Macintosh at my disposal. And I'm inclined to do something drastic.
The obvious solution to these pernickety system problems is completely to reinstall Snow Leopard (onto an erased hard drive) and start from scratch. What has stopped me doing this so far is the fact that, together with the various keycodes that came with my applications, I would also lose all my e-mails and accounts from the Mail application - and all the various passwords in my Keychain.
Surely there must be some way to retrieve just these select items alone from backup after a clean install? (And - yes, techies - I KNOW that Apple doesn't offer a "clean install" these days but you know what I mean: I want to reset everything; then retrieve a few select items - but WITHOUT the complete migration - which would likely, in the process, reinstate all those corrupted preference files or permissions or whatever it is that is messing around with my machine's short term memory.)
    So here's my question again:
How - following a "clean install" - do I locate and retrieve the specific ingredients that will restore my mailboxes and keychain to their current state, whilst leaving everything else "clean"?

Your problem is not Boot Camp, in fact, is your optical drive. Win XP requires indeed sp2, but also the internal drive, does not work from external optical drive.
For other possible tricks, please use the appropriate Boot Camp forum, not here. Mac OS X may be installed from both external and internal optical drive and/or internal/external partition of a disk, any disk. Windows is not so generous.

I'm using the latest version of mail but not very good in dealing with computer problems.  My email supplier is Bt Internet.
    Can anyone help

I have seen something similar once. A message on the mail server was corrupted and the download would never complete, but would always start the next time I launched Mail. It was the oldest message, so Mail always started with it, blocking all other mail. Deleting the file on the server was the solution. Don't know if that fits your situation. Good luck. BTW, I called my ISP's tech support and they watched the server's actions and could see that the file was not actually transferring. Give yours a call.

If you have a mac, forget it. PSE 6 is the earliest version that will install sucessfully and run without trouble in 10.6 or 10.7. If you have PSE 4 installed when you upgrade to 10.6 it will continue to run but the installer just doesn't work in recent versions of OS X, so you can't reinstall it if you need to do so.

try resetting your phone by turning it off and back on again. Also, the server may still be slammed from all the activity, so it may take a little with to connect.

Interclue fails to initialize upon restart from either shut down or back out of hibernation. Works when re-installed, but then fails every time. What would cause this situation. Never had problems with this add-on with Firefox until I downloaded Firefox 4.0. I can disable, re-start, enable,re-start, and it works fine. The same scenario holds true if I uninstall and then re-install add-on.

Just a guess, but I wonder if you have some application or process hanging up that's stopping it from shutting down? You might try closing each application individually and see if this helps.
    Good luck!

  • G5 with leopard 10.5.8 running slowly, attempting to clean install but only have original 10.4.2 discs

My dad has an iMac G5 1.9GHz running 10.5.8 with 2.5GB ram which is running extremely slowly. I want to back up the hard drive and then do a 'clean install' to attempt to fix the issues. However, he only has the original discs for 10.4.2, having upgraded to leopard using my brother-in-law's family upgrade disc.
My question is, if I erase the hard-drive and then install Tiger, will I be able to use Timemachine to access his backups, as they were done using 10.5.8?
And if my brother-in-law no longer has his Leopard upgrade discs will I be able to get a copy?
I don't want to downgrade the machine if there's no way of getting it back up to 10.5.8
    Many thanks in advance

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation.  TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible;  Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided.  Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.  Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Backuplist
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    iBackup
    JaBack
    Silver Keeper
    MimMac
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.

  • Clean install and then restoring just what is needed

I have a machine running SL. It is fine as far as SL is concerned.
Back in time I started out with Panther on a 12" PB. I upgraded hardware and software a few times. As my profile shows I have a MBP 17" with the latest OS.
I had a hard drive fail last Christmas. Apple was great and they replaced the drive. As I was in the US and the backup was in the UK I used the machine for about 2 weeks before I could attempt to restore files. When I got back I found that the account set up did not match so the restore was not clean.
In any event I likely have some legacy files or other junk kicking around that I do not need. Some of it will be outside the user part of the filesystem (old apps, old library files for apps that were deleted long ago).
I had a number of application crashes over the last year running Leopardi. When in at the Apple store to get a fan replaced the Genius suggested that it might be time to think about a clean install. After I told him that I have had a number of system crashes he definitely suggested it was time for a clean install.
Basic model is back everything up and then install from the factory issued disk. Once I have a clean system on the computer I can bring across my files.
Question: How do I get only the files I need or want and not some of the old junk? Frankly I have no idea just what things I need or want in terms of legacy system files. I am pretty sure that everything in my home direction and down from there will be wanted. There will be some apps that I no longer need but how to make sure I am deleting all the associated files is unclear.
I have lots of spare disc space on external drives so I can make a Carbon Copy of the system and a Time Machine back up on a different drive. I am confident of my ability to follow the process once someone can explain what will consistently work. The time involved is not a concern.
    Suggestions?

Mac OS X doesn't have a clean install per se.
However, making two bootable clones should allow you room to erase and install Snow Leopard, and just migrate over user data from specific user data folders.
You may have to reregister your licenses for licensed software to avoid issues.
See these two resources to make sure your applications either need Snow Leopard, and/or are Snow Leopard compatible:
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
    http://www.macintouch.com/specialreports/snowleopard/slcompat.html
and make sure your printers and scanners are Snow Leopard compatible with their drivers:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669
Once that's all the case, then you can migrate your user data from the specific folders on your backup*:

  • Shows flash player is installing, but then can't find it and it won't work. Help please

Hello. My flash playe worked just fine until this morning. I turned my computer on, went to a facebook app., and got a message "if doesn't load in the next 10 seconds, upgrade flash by clicking here" which brought me to adobe I have an Acer laptop, and am running Internet Explorer 7.
I've done everything I can, but can't get flash player to work. I've uninstalled, re-booted, re-installed, re-booted. I've made sure my security zones are on medium, I've temporarity disabled my virus protection program while uninstalling and installing. I've went under tools, manage add ons, to enable it, but the only adobe add-on listed is adobe PDF link helper and it's enabled. I've checked to make sure Java script is enabled, I've made sure I have the 32 bit browser, I've done everything I could find to do (I've worked on this for hours today).
When I click to download from adobe site, it shows it installing without a problem, goes all the way through, shows done, then shows to close download manager. If I go through control panel to 'uninstall programs' adobe flash is listed. If I go through start, adobe flash is not listed in my programs and does not come up when I search under start.
So, from I can find, I can download and install it, but then it's not there and doesn't work. Please Help. I've struggled with this all day, and it's very frustrating, and the only way to reach adobe is to pay $39 for a phone call. I really need help on this, it would be very much appreciated. Please, and thank you.

Hi, and thanks again for taking the time to help me with this, I sure appreciate it. I ran a disc cleanup, then I went in under internet options and deleted the cookies and such. I got rid of the uninstall and install programs I had in the download folder but still have the ones on the desktop.
I went to Windows/System32-  but I don't have a Macromed folder there. I have one under the SysWOW64 folder though, a Macromed folder, with a Flash folder under it, with files uner it:
    Flash10l.ocx-  ActiveX control,
    FlashInstall-   Text document,
    FlashUtil10l_ActiveX.dll- Application extension,
FlashUtil10l_ActiveX-  Application (with a red file by it, and it opens the uninstall program),  and
    install-  Text Document.
The two text documents say they were created last year, but the other three say they were created today.
And like I said, these are under the SysWOW64 folder.  The System32 folder does not have a Macromed folder under it at all, and instead of being in alphabetical order from top to bottom, they start with Z and the A's are at the bottom, if that means anything. I called my frienfd and had her check her computer step by step as I did mine, and hers doesn't have a Macromed under the System32 folder either, but does the SysWOW64 file, and it has the same files I do, except two of the first one, the Flash10l.ocx, but with different dates on it.
I ran my virus scan, avast, and it didn't find anything. I did close the browsers to run the Window Defender and Malwarebytes, and tried it again a few minutes ago, and they are still saying they find nothing. The malwarebytes found 7 things this morning when I ran it, but hasn't found anything since.

    Hi
First, get rid of your designer, the page design/code is a mess.
There are a number of problems with the page, not least being the disabling of the back button in all browsers I tested it in, (visitors may visit once with this, but are unlikely to do so a 2nd time).
The menu system is a fixed size so that when the browser is resized it overflows the browser window.
The use of tables for layout is not recommended as it is inaccessible to users using assistive devices.
To put this more politely, if you paid for this, ask for your money back. If you did not pay, then start again and use one of the dreamweaver layouts for your page, for more info, see - http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/articles/introducing_new_css_layouts.html.

    Hey there,
Here is how you can uninstall using the scrubber that is built into the software. I included both options on how to access the scrubber. Just choose whatever option is easiest for you.
Option 1: From Original installation CD:
    1. Insert CD into drive, and then cancel the installer
    2. Open My Computer, and then right click on the CD drive and chose open
    3. Open folder Util
    4. Open folder CCC
    5. If you have an HP computer run the L3uninstall.exe. If you have a non-HP computer run the L4uninstall.exe
    6. When the uninstall has completed restart the computer
    7. Run Disk cleanup from Accessories\ System Tools
    8. Download and install the latest version of Adobe flash player
    http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html
    9. Download the full feature software and drivers
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=al-64285-2&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&...
    10. Run the download to reinstall the printer
Option 2: If software was downloaded and extracted to your system:
    1. Type %temp% in the run field
    2. Look for, and open the folder starting with 7z (Example: 7zS2356)
    3. Open folder Util
    4. Open folder CCC
    5. If you have an HP computer run the L3uninstall.exe. If you have a non-HP computer run the L4uninstall.exe
    6. When the uninstall has completed restart the computer
    7. Run Disk cleanup from Accessories\ System Tools
    8. Download and install the latest version of Adobe flash player
    http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html
    9. Download the full feature software and drivers
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=al-64285-2&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&...
    10. Run the download to reinstall the printer
    Hope this helps!
