Clean Install confusion persists

In a previous thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8559606#8559606
some questioned my continued desire to ensure users not get confused between clean install and archive and install. Rest assured, there are good reasons to clarify what's clean install versus archive and install.
1. Mac OS 8 and 9 used "Clean Install" to refer to a process most similar to 10.2 and higher's "Archive and Install."
2. Book authors of Mac tech support have inconsistently used the term "Clean Install" to sometimes mean "Erase and Install," and sometimes "Archive and Install."
3. Archive and Install can yield unpredictable results when installing an older over a newer system. This was not a problem with Mac OS 8 and 9's Clean Install because in Mac OS 8 and 9 no dependencies for the operating system were outside the System Folder, whereas in Mac OS X there appear to be a few that are not covered.
When users request help and say they have "clean installed" I continue to ask for clarification, because I have no idea whose "book" they believe to be fact, and whose book they don't, and I want to make sure they have not put themselves in a situation where Archive and Install can fail, or where they have not backed up their data prior to erasing their hard drive, or are not about to put themselves in one of these situations.

My opinion is that sometimes the context of a post makes it clear what is meant by a "clean" install, sometimes it doesn't, ... & usually it doesn't matter.
Sure, posts would be a little clearer if everyone used proper terminology like "Archive & Install" or "Erase & Install" but remember that for many (maybe most?) topics it matters just as much if potentially "dirty" items were retained or added back to the new install afterwards.
For an Erase & Install this can & often does happen because Migration/Setup Assistant runs automatically & offers to migrate all manner of items from a backup into the "clean" (here meaning "fresh") install. For an Archive & Install it often happens because the "Preserve Users and Network Settings" option is selected. Even when it is not, items from the Previous Systems folder may be manually dragged back into the current one or placed there by other means.
Some users are aware that doing any of these things compromises the "cleanliness" of the final result & some aren't. But my point is if they said they did an "Archive & Install" or an "Erase & Install" instead of a "clean install" it would be no clearer if they did or did not retain or add back suspect items. Unless users are very clear about exactly what they did, we still would need to ask for clarification.

  • I cannot connect to the login page of my banking websites for Firefox but can from IE also firefox does not close when I shut it down I have just done a clean instal of windowsws7 and teh problem persists on reinstall of FF3.6.13

I can connect with my banking websites but the login page will not come up. This is a recent occurrence and I have done virus scans and have also recently done a clean instal of Windows 7. The problem persists. I can connect to any other website with no problems. When I close FF it appears to close and Task manager shows as not running but it will not reopen. If I attempt to uninstall I am told that FF is running and needs to be closed. I have to reboot to get to close and be able to reopen.
I can connect to the bank sites with IE. However I really don't like IE.
I am using Win7 Professional on a Sony notebook VGN SZ55

I don't have an answer, but I experienced the same problems trying to set up an airport express to route traffic to my stereo.
Apple Extreme router, iMac and laptop all worked just fine for months, upon installing Airport Express (step by step, according to instructions), all **** broke loose. Airport Utility was unable to see my Airport Extreme router, after hours of rebooting computer, cable modem, router, and finally a hard reset of the Airport Extreme router, it is finally recognized by Airport Utility again.
Recreated network, iMac connects to the internet just fine, laptop (Macbook Air) connects to the network just fine, but will not connect to the internet. Network diagnostics does not help, it gets to the "do you have a router? If so, reboot" stage, and never seems to see the router.
    Any suggestions?

  • Persisting kernel panics with mountain lion (clean install)

hi, I could really have some help on recent kernel panics I am experiecing on my 2009 MacBook Pro with Mountain lion installed. Here and there I have been doing some reading but I am not a techy, most of it I do not understand.
Last kernel panic occured while I was copying a large file (998mb) from network storage. Before a fresh install kernel panics happend literally any time and I could not pin point any reasons.. At the moment I have no third-party software installed except Spotify...
I also have recently replaced my HDD with an SSD. Currently 8gb of 1066mhz memory is installed
This is log of the latest kernel panic:

If there is someone out there that could help, I appreciate it very much...!!! This is getting very annoying
    thank you!!

    I noticed that the:

Now, before I go any further, I'd like to point out that diagnosing, and actually eliminating, kernel panics is very tricky. There are several causes that are very well documented on the internet. However, you can run all those tests, perform all that voodoo, even reinstall the OS... and continue to have kernel panics. That said, here are some notes:
What brought me here in the first place is that, since upgrading from Lion to Mountain Lion, I've been having the same frequency of kernel panics as you.
My frequency of kernel panics using Snow Leopard and Lion averaged once a week.
On Snow Leopard I could actually reproduce the kernel panic by USB tethering my iPhone. This was a widespread and well-documented issue for people with early 2011 MacBook Pro's, and Apple supposedly fixed it in an update. Supposedly...
Updating to 10.8.1 didn't fix the problem for me.
Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, I've stopped using Spotify, as that seemed to be the worst culprit (on my machine). Keep in mind, there are thousands, maybe millions, of users who aren't having kernel panics while using Spotity on Mountain Lion, so that's really only one data point. Also, Spotify recently updated it's own software that may have fixed a kernel extension problem but I haven't used it enough yet to report anything.
I took my computer to the Apple Store in 2011, and I recently spent an hour on the phone with Apple Care. No dice.
My kernel panic logs don't seem to have a common denominator as to the cause (Spotify, USB...)
Just when I think I see a common denominator like when I'm using a certain USB port, or a secondary display, there will be a kernel panic when neither of those things are happening
You''ve got a lot going on with your machine: upgraded memory, SSD...
Taking all that into consideration, be cautious not to jump to conclusions. No doubt, it's a combination of factors. For example, it could be certain MacBook Pro's that have certain video cards, USB, Spotify, Flash... I mean, really, it just starts heading down a dangerous path of speculation and conjecture, so I'm leaving it up the Apple engineers at this point. And, of course, always back up.
Anyway, you and I and whole lot of other folks out there are having the exact same problem since updating to 10.8.0. Add to that the issues that many of us are having with Safari, Mission Control... and it spells out one thing: the price one pays for being an early adopter. By all means, follow the steps outlined here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11045
    and perhaps here:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
    and use @baltwo's excellent recommendation:
    http://kelleycomputing.net/rember/
Hopefully, that will fix the problem that you're experiencing but I'm betting against it. Most likely, 10.8.x will fix or at least improve this issue.
In the meantime, here's the good news: because of the autosave state features introduced in Lion, a kernel panic has gone from being a potentinally devestatingly destructive event to a minor (albeit inccessant) nuisance. It never hurts to compusively hit Command-S but even so, I'm happy to report that I can't think of a single kernel panic that has resulted in substantial data loss (read: work). In fact, there are worse things than restarting your computer, and reallocating memory that's been leaking from Safari...
Anyway, unless you're one of the those affected that can't even boot, I'd recommmend stopping short of reinstalling the OS. Wait for a stable release, and then when you have a slow week, perform a clean install. Then begin the process of installing fresh versions of your apps one-by-one. Also, by then, third party developers will have had time to update their kernel extensions, etc.
In other words, follow the hypocratic oath: thou shall not harm. We were all good before Mountain Lion, so let's not fix what isn't broken by tinkering with our systems too much.
    Best of luck to you!
    Mark

  • Confused after Leopard CLEAN install...

So I made a disk image of my Tiger HD and migrated my apps and such to my clean install of Leopard using Migration Assistant. I opened iWeb (v2.0.2) to update my blog only to find out nothing is there. It shows at the bottom my site name (to my personal domain) but nothing else. The option for "Revert to saved" is my best guess, but it is "greyed" out and I am unable to select it. Im not really sure what to do to get all my info back from my iDisk. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Running into the same issue...what did you do to resolve it? I did the clean install, cloned my Tiger OS, backed up my iLife settings, thought I restored them, but still nothing.
    Thanks!

  • I've tried to eliminate system errors by performing a clean install of ML. What's the best way to set up my iMac for a singlet user?

One of my main goals is to be able to run a Windows application on my iMac, purchased in July, 2012, with the Intel 2.5Ghz i5, 4GB RAM, 500GB hard drive. At first I installed Boot Camp and then Win 7, then the application I need to run, and I don't recall having problems. But I tired of the required reboot each time and got greedy and needy - so I installed VMWare Fusion, only to be told that the W7 software I use won't work with Fusion, but it will with Parallels! So, I was able to get Parallels at a discount (because I had Fusion), and decided I would import Boot Camp into Parallels.
Then the problems began. I suspect I did something I shouldn't have during this process, but to shorten the story I did a clean install of ML, set up iCloud, and monitored Console for problems. And problems there were - lots of them, and they all seemed to reference iCloud in some way. Since I have the ML installer on a thumb drive I thought I'd see what happened if I did another clean install, but this time I'd ignore iCould altogether (yes, I have everything backed up to mypcback.com) and proceeded. As before, the errors streamed down Console's face as if it were my own. I've run OnyX, which seemed to help, but many of the issues persist. I'm at a loss as how to proceed other than invoke Apple Support, which, BTW, is not covered under Warranty.
I need to have a stable ML platform before I start using W7 and refuse to believe that the OSX is "just buggy." Can someone help. I have no other iDevices that need to be synced, and really don't see the need to set up iCloud. Noone else than I use the iMac. It should be pretty simple to create a stable OSX so I can go where I need to go. I realize 4GB is not a lot of memory and will look into that. For the moment, I can stip down Win 7, and OSX for that matter, to free up memory. I didn't want to included a bunch of log files, but I will if someone thinks that it would be helpful.
The follow are the latest entries into my system log file, after I lost connection to the internet, and then regained connection after rebooting my cable modem:

This DNS change is only the lastest manifestation of what seems like an endless list. Can anybody give me some direction before I have to pay Apple to fix what I think they broke themselvesa?!?  BTW, I am not a tech. Thanking everyone who read this and especially to anyone who can help.

Linc, thanks for the tips. I knew you'd have a good method. I asked for it because I have learned of some of the myths about OSX and it's need (or lack thereof) to be scrubbed, rinsed, and blown dry; suckering folks into buying all manner of utilities to keep your Mac spiffy at all times, when in fact it rarely needs any intervention at all because of its Unix background. In fact, I rarely shut mine down and I've learned that the system is actually designed to be left running under most circumstances.
To keep your data secure the three most important things to know is backup, backup, backup. I use a third-party, cloud-based back-up system. It can automatically make backups every hour if that's what I want and I can supplement that anytime by simply dropping a file into the application's desktop interface.
Since I last posted my Mac has been running smoothly and I've been able to install Parallels and Windows 7, as well as the VantagePoint software I mentioned. Though it crashed once this morning and I submit one line from the log file:
    12/20/12 10:31:00.639 AM appleeventsd[54]: BUG in libdispatch: 12C60 - 1510 - 0x4
After a reboot, log entries spewed all manner of troubling messages, from those that are osascript-related to broken forks, etc. but as far as I know there were no actual crash logs generated until this afternoon, one being just a few minutes ago. Linc, would you be so kind to take a look and tell me if there's something I need to do?

  • How to restore iTunes library from TimeMachine external hard drive backup after clean install

I was not able to solve this problem, hence I decided to open this discussion.
    1. Recently, I clean installed Yosemite so my new Mac is completely empty.
    2. I have my time machine backup on my eternal hard drive and would like to restore only specific things - such as iTunes library.
    3. I did not manually copy iTunes library to my drive, I did the TM backup only, but I also do have all the files in my own "music" folder I manually backed-up.
However, I cannot locate the library there, where is it?
How do I move the library to my new Mac and then establish a new source folder that would be on my drive?
PS: Previously, iTunes used my own music folder as a source = it contained all the music files. I had it on an external drive, later moved it to my Mac.
This leads me to the conclusion that my backup copy of iTunes library did not contain the files anyway.
    Any advice?
    Thank you in advance.

I am confused as to what you had or have where and when.  The bottom line is, your library (for the standard user) is everything in the iTunes folder.  As far as iTunes' organization and display is concerned, your library is a file called "iTunes Library.itl" which points to all the other host of files and folders normally in the iTunes folder which all work together.

If you kept everything together in one place then you need to put the whole iTunes folder on the drive where you want it, start iTunes while holding down the option key and guide it to that .itl file.  If things were split up and you had media on the external and the rest of the library on the internal you need to get them back to exactly where they were before.  If you can't find that iTunes folder holding the critical .itl file anywhere then you have a bunch of media tracks and no organization and will need to rebuild the organization from ground level.

  • Firefox has suddenly stopped connecting on one of three user accounts on the same computer. That account still connects with Safari - but not Firefox. A clean-install has not solved the problem. Help?

Three user accounts on the same computer all link to a single copy of Firefox 3.6.8 - but one of them has suddenly lost its ability to use the program. Firefox opens in that account, but it cannot connect to the Internet. 'Done' appears at the lower left of a blank Firefox page [it's set to load a blank page initially], as though a page had finished downloading ... but Firefox does not actually generate any Internet activityx.
Previously, the Firefox connection for this account was smooth and reliable. I haven't added, upgraded or downloaded any new programs, nor made any other computer changes in recent weeks or months.
Puzzlingly - that same account still connects successfully to the Internet via Safari. And the other accounts on the same computer continue to use Firefox with no problem - including a test user-account that I set up today to help troubleshoot the problem. The blockage is restricted solely to Firefox with that one user account.
Following your Support page instructions, I did a clean-install of Firefox 3.6.8, removing both the existing Firefox 3.6.8 and the Library/Application Support/Firefox folder. Going the extra mile, I checked all accounts to be certain that no Firefox folders remained in any of them - then emptied the Trash and restarted before installing a freshly downloaded 3.6.8. But blimey - the blockage still persists for that one user account.
Firefox shows no visible cookies that might influence the connection. [It's set to delete all cookies upon closing anyway.] And I see no obvious instructions in Mac's firewall or any software program to refuse access to Firefox. The computer is stand-alone, not networked. And in any case, Firefox works just fine in the two other user accounts.
Deleting the hobbled user account is not feasible. So what is causing this roadblock? Did I miss a step in the clean-install? How can that account resume using Firefox?
Thanks in advance for your advice.

If files already have been downloaded then remove the files in the updates and updates\0 folder.
You can also delete active-update.xml and possibly updates.xml (stores the update history).

  • Updating to iOS 6 using clean install on a different machine to the one I sync with

    Hi,
Slightly confusing situation here, but one for which I can't get a reliable answer out of AppleCare.
iPhone 4S, running latest version of iOS 5, currently syncing with my Mac mini.  I want to:
    1) Perform a clean install of iOS 6
    2) Change all syncing from the Mac mini to my Mac Pro
    3) Restore all the data from the pre-update backup, so that I'm back to where I was pre-update, albeit with iOS 6 instead of 5.
I have made a backup of the iPhone on my Mac Pro.  It's running iTunes 10.7 and OS X 10.8.2.  At the moment, my plan is to:
    1) Choose "Restore" from the "Summary" screen of iTunes.
My belief is that this will erase the device, and then download and install the latest version of iOS, ie. 6.
    2) Choose "Restore from Backup" by right-clicking my iPhone 4S in the iTunes Sidebar
My belief is that this will restore all my data from the backup I just made, ie. prior to updating to iOS 6.
I should, by the end of these two steps, have a phone running iOS 6 that now syncs (ie. is linked with) with my Mac Pro and not my Mac mini.  Am I right?
Just to clarify: the Mac mini has no data synced with the iPhone per se, but I used it for the activation process and to add some music, so the iPhone 4S and the Mac mini thus became linked.  My Mac Pro is the device that actually has all my movies, music, apps etc., and I've finally got round to moving my iPhone to sync with it.  Both Macs, and the iPhone, use the same Apple ID.
    Thanks

Never mind, I finally spoke to a Tier 2 who grasped the issue.
Despite the process above, the Mac Pro would _not_ be considered the sync library for this iPhone.  Any attempt to sync new apps, music, videos etc. to this iPhone would result in all current examples of those types being purged from the iPhone first, even if they were identical and registered to the same Apple ID.
When it comes to apps, I can think of no reason why ExampleApp v1.10 on the iPhone, registered to Apple ID: ExampleID, should be deleted along with all associated data only to be replaced with ExampleApp v1.10 registered to ExampleID when synced with a different iTunes library authorised for ExampleID.  Non-DRMed media I can understand; but apps?  Apple've lost me there.
If anyone can shed some light on this disappointing situation, it might give me some comfort.

  • Error 0x80070015 on clean install of windows 8.1 enterprise

Hi, I am receiving and error 0x80070015 when trying to do a clean install of windows 8.1 enterprise evaluation on to a newly built PC.  I am installing from a USB stick to a brand new SSD running in ACHI mode.  Each time the installation reaches
12% on the 'getting files ready for installation' I receive this error message.  The first time I tried the installation I also got an error message 0x800703ee but this has now stopped.
Please go easy on me, I'm not an IT pro, I want to check out windows 8.1 on this new build to decide if I want to go with it or stick with Windows 7 on this and my other work PC.
    Any advice gratefully received.
    Thanks, Simon

    Hi,
Error code 0x80070015 usually means "device not ready" and is often seen when the USB drive or disc is having issues.
Please re-create a bootable USB or DVD to check the results.
Another thing is that there might be some SATA clash on your system with the new SSD connected. Please try to enter the WinRE from your USB drive and try following commands to create new partition:
    1. Use Diskpart command line to show the partition on your disk:
Run CMD as Administrator, type following command line one by one:
    DISKPART
    List Disk
    Select Disk 0
    2. Delete the system partition (if there is, it can be about 100~200MB) and C partition, delete these 2:
    List Partition
Select Partition 0 (I suspect that there is the system partition on this disk and it’s the partition 0)
    Delete Partition
Select Partition 1 (I suspect that this is the C drive)
    Delete Partition
    3. Create new one.
    Create Partition Primary
    4. Try to restart system via installation disk and reinstall Windows 8 on it.
For detailed information about this command, you can refer to this article:
    DISKPART:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc770877(v=ws.10).aspx
If the issue persists, please run Check disk tool in WinRE:
    CHKDSK /R /F
Any error message, please post back.
    Hope these could be helpful.

  • Any recommendations on how to do a clean install of Win 7 Pro OA?

Hey Guys, I just got my new x201 and I'm looking to do a clean install of windows 7 pro (oa)
any ideas on how to do it without using the rescue and recovery? im trying to avoid all the factory programs being installed, so i dont want to use the rescue and recovery option. my main concern is activation, but im also wondering what CD/DVD i would use to install the OEM/OA version since it didnt come with any media. does lenovo provide this if i need? i can already see performance decrease in some applications, and in just general use of the computer. any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
i was also wondering if it would be a big deal if i got an SSD for this laptop, would thre be any activation issues with the OEM/OA version?
    thanks in advance
    nick

Another note Rescue and Recovery can create OS only disks instead of just factory reset and can also create as is which copies exactly how the PC is now. Not sure why no one on this forum knows that or atleast does not tell anyone. weird. Those options are under the create disks tab. Great for like what your needing to do. Install all the programs and make the as is disk to put on all 99 other PCs. Cheers! EDIT note: Nevermind my useless info posted above. I just confused R&R with OKR AGAIN. Does someone know how to use R&R that could post info. Can R&R create disks of the system as is like OKR can?

  • While intending to perform a clean install of Mountain Lion while continuing with old apps and files, is it a waste to restore a backup that was made while running Mountain Lion as an UPgrade from Lion?

While intending to perform a clean install of Mountain Lion while continuing with old apps and files, is it a waste to restore a backup that was made while running Mountain Lion as an UPgrade from Lion?
Originally I was running Mountain Lion as an UPgrade from Lion. I created a backup in Time Machine, performed a clean install of Mountain Lion, then I proceeded to use Time Machine to restore the back up.
When thinking about the essence of a back up restore, it occurrs to me that for all I know, I may have just wated my time IF Time Machine also restores all the old unneeded files that remain from Lion after an upgrade.
Since the backup was made while running Mountain Lion as an upgrade from Lion, did restoring this backup defeat the purpose of a clean install by reinstalling old Lion files?
If so, how can I re-do the last portion of the process so that I get all my home-folder files and apps back without the full bulk of old Lion files? Migration assistant I'm guessing?
    -Chris

    Hello John!
Thank you for your response which solved my problem. For other users who may stumble upon this, I'll clear up the confusion and share how I solved the problem with your help; When looking for answers to my computer problems, finding unresolved questions where person B offers a solution and person A never comes back and says "That worked, thank you.", it demonstrates a "k-thnx-bye" user mentality that leaves others with the same problem lost. Without further ado:
It is not clear what you did because the meaning of "clean install" is vague. You can erase a volume and install an OS which leaves none of its previous content intact,
This is what I did: I erased the volume leaving no previous content intact, while then installing OS X Mountain Lion.
or you can upgrade an existing OS (or reinstall the same one) which does not alter your user - installed files.
An upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion is what I started with initially before erasing anything. This was undesirable. Since this can cause Macs to run slower (especially whereas I'm using a mid-2011 Mac Mini), my goal was to go from operating within an upgrade to Mountain Lion, to operating within an installation of Montain Lion that was not preceded by any other oprating system.
Hence a "clean install of Mountain Lion while continuing with old apps and files" is confusing.
Well put and understood. What I should have said was:
    1.Erase the volume
    2.Install Mountain Lion clean
3.Confirm that Mountain Lion is functioning properly
4.Proceed to use either Time Machine or Migration Assistant to Import/Migrate/Copy over only two things; My old apps (That had been stored originally in the designated Applications folder) and all files and folders originally stored in the home folder under users.
If you restore from a Time Machine backup then all modifications that occurred subsequent to that backup become erased. It renders moot any OS X upgrade performed subsequent to that backup.
That makes sense and is just as I later suspected.
If so, how can I re-do the last portion of the process so that I get all my home-folder files and apps back without the full bulk of old Lion files? Migration assistant I'm guessing?
    Yes.
This is what I did and everything works perfectly. Thank you so much once again!

  • Can I do a Clean install on 1 drive of a 2 drive setup?

    I have 2 internal drives, 1 a 300gb which is full, and a new 1tb empty.
I want to do a clean install and upgrade to Snow Leopard on drive 1.
So I've just cloned hard drive 1 onto drive 2, with the excellent CCC. So drive 2 is an exact bootable copy. Can someone please give me some advice on my next move...
Is it ok to remove internal drive 2 from the machine, so i don't accidentally erase this disk (i cannot risk any chance of losing my files) while I clean install drive 1 with an upgrade of Snow Leopard?
Can I then re-fit drive 2 and copy over my software, preferences and settings to drive 1? even though drive 2 will be 10.5.8 - Is this ok?
Will all it's contents be seen when I re-fit the drive? - or will there be an OS clash? As both drive's will contain an OS - Does the OS only run from the drive which is specified on start up?
    Thanks everyone

Is it ok to remove internal drive 2 from the machine, so i don't accidentally erase this disk
Yes, but as long as you are reasonably careful to select the 1 TB drive for the Snow Leopard installation, it isn't necessary to do this. In fact, if the other drive is almost full, the installer may not let you choose it.
Can I then re-fit drive 2 and copy over my software, preferences and settings to drive 1?
If it is full, then you could not do this in the first place. In the second, some of the software installed with Snow Leopard won't be compatible with 10.5. IOW, don't do it.
Will all it's contents be seen when I re-fit the drive?
Yes. Each drive will appear separately. If you give them different names there will be no confusion about which is which.
or will there be an OS clash?
    No.
Does the OS only run from the drive which is specified on start up?
    Yes.

  • Clean Install from a Download

I am trying to clean-up a Powerbook G4 to transfer to a friend. It has 10.4.8 installed that is acting funky. The DVD RW occasionally crashes on DVD's and writes a groove that seriously confuses the reader.
I have downloaded all the avaialble updates and tried installing from both my main account and from the root account. I would like to do a clean install, but I cannot find that Option anywhere.
    Any help available?

If you want to put the PB into the original state, then boot it with the restore disk that came with the machine and select restore. To bring the OS up to 10.4.8 (assuming that it came with Tiger), your friend needs to update it to 10.4.8, via Software Update or manually.

  • GS70 Clean install of 8.1 Pro but no sound

I had a problem persisting before I did the clean install of 8.1 on my GS70 where after I restarted my computer the audio suddenly stated that I had no audio devices installed. After trying to search and try fixes for about 2 hours I went ahead and did a clean install of my OS along with reinstalling the drivers using the disc that it came with. Somehow it still states that I have no audio devices installed and shows that there's nothing that exists. I'm now unsure of what to do now and wondering if anyone can help me fix this problem.

Fixed it.  Just reset the EC.  Unplug the charger, press and hold the power button until the laptop turns off and keep holding for at least five seconds.  Then stick a pin into the reset hole on the right side and hold it for at least five seconds.  Then plug in the charger and turn on the power.  Speakers worked after this.  Login and then do a battery calibration.
