Everything that is provided with the pre-installation is available for installation from the DVDs. So there's no concern from losing anything.
I do this myself mainly for peace of mind. I like to erase any new drive with a write to zero at least one to ensure there are no issues physically. Beyond that I find that customised installations tend to work more efficiently (your milage may vary greatly on this) as less is installed.

I did a t400 clean install and I have followed instructions to install every driver but it still complains about a PCI device not found.  Looking at my device manager there is no unknown devices...everything is already installed.  But everytime I start my computer the first thing that pops up is a notification stating that a PCI device is found.  Anyone have any ideas?

  • How do I do a clean install of Mountain Lion?

I already have Mac OS X Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro A1126, but how can I do a clean install on it? Do I have to buy a installation disc or from Mac App Store?
    Thanks in advance!

I differentiate between a 'clean' installation and a 'fresh' installation by this meaning: a 'clean' installation means that you're going to erase the boot drive and 'cleanly' install everything, including OS X anew, whereas, for me, a 'fresh' installation means only that you're NOT going to erase the entire drive, but only install a 'fresh' version of OS X.
So which do you wish to do?
Either way, you should just be able to boot into your Recovery partition (hold down the command and R keys whilst booting) and then either install a 'fresh' version of OS X, or erase the contents of the drive, using Disk Utility, and do a 'clean' install of OS X.
Mountain Lion does not come on a disc - you should have purchased it via the App Store and you may need your Apple ID to install again from the Recovery partition.
    Does that help?

  • After finally completing  a clean install what is the BEST way to replace my data.

Please understand I moved from PC to Mac in Late 2011. Unlike windows where you have to know how it all works to use it, Mac is so simple I, to my own detriment , did not take the time to learn more than just my daily use. Been busy moving country and other crazy life stuff. I am rectifying this mistake. I did have issue with the clean install process working through with out interruption, some file issue, so had to repeat a few times.
    1. completed a clean install through to completion of set up, new account etc. Machine runs amazingly better. Completed updates. Knowing Migration Assistant can deal with duplicate user issues.
Q? Do I need to run disk repair or other.
    2. Thought myself ill equipped with knowledge and understanding to manually replace my data via finder. I simply do not know where things are supposed to go.
    3. Tried reinstall of everything thru set up but it installed everything including all the issues I had before. Went through clean install process again.
    4. With this in mind I am hesitant and very weary to use Migration Assistant to move everything back as I simply do Not know where the issue lies even if it allowed greater folder & file separation.
I have got to the stage where I am ready to recover my data which is on my backup external hard drive. The data was recovered using Time Machine.
I wish to do what is best for my machine. It is getting older and I wish to do what I can for its longevity.
Q? So what data is best recovered in which way and in what order.
    5. Is it best to say do recover applications from App Store and redo all updates if required.
Then install non app store apps, e.g. Microsoft office for mac, and others thru finder.
Users thru Migration assistant  etc etc.
Been learning and working on this since my last post. Lots of watching YouTube and reading for hours.
So much conflicting opinions and maybe this is due to my lack of specifics and most posts are for general use so I do understand.
Again thank you in advance. I still think Mac has it all over PC.

I read thru the data migration one below however wasn't sure of its applicability given it was from 09.
Re: 2. there seems to be data I have yet to bring across. How important it is I don't know. What exactly it is I also am yet to find out. Will proceed with the downloading n stuff.
Thank you for your help on this.

  • Clean installed OS X. iTunes does not recognize my iPhone. How do I restore settings to avoid iPhone wipe?

    Hi everyone,
I was having problems with Mountain Lion and decided to do a backup and clean install everything. I hadn't counted on the fact that even after I restored iTunes library of music, videos and iPhone apps, my Mac wouldn't recognize my iPhone and ask to wipe and resync.
I have a backup made before I did the clean install. Is there a way for me to bring iTunes settings so it recognizes my iPhone and I can do a sync again?
    Thanks in advance.

I did a clean install for troubleshooting and I wanted it to stay that way, so Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant were out of the question. I wanted to transfer my iTunes library and purchases and to be able to sync my iPhone as before. Called Apple and the rep said the only paths were the Assistants or wipe the phone and resync with the new library losing all app data in the process. Sensing the rep may be a bit obtuse, I emailed Apple and got a call back from another friendly rep who promptly emailed this to me:
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4527
I can attest this method works, and the key part may be this one:
If you backed your iOS device up to iTunes, back up your devices on the new computer or manually transfer the backups from your old computer. The backups belong in:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/

  • Everything is so slow ... Clean instal?

Slow to wake up in the morning. Slow for Finder to react. Slow for Firefox to react. Spinning beachballs everywhere and applications crashing.
This is on a 24 inch G5 bought new in March of this year - supposedly SL ready.
This has been my Snow Leopard experience so far. Not good.
So is a clean instal the only way to go?
If so, I read that we should back up all data. OK, does this include all applications? How and where is the best place to back them up? If I have Time Machine going, are they already all backed up?
Please advise. I am not a techie and have enjoyed great Mac experiences for several years. Thanks.

To clarify slightly what Tom said, the external drive needs to be at least as big as the space used on your normal startup drive, plus at least 10 to 15% of that capacity for use by the OS in case you need to start up from it. So for example, if you have 250 GB HD in your Mac & "Get Info" or Disk Utility says 130 GB are used, you could clone it to a 160 GB HD (130 + 10% = 143 GB).
Because making a bootable clone normally requires erasing everything previously on the destination volume, it is sometimes useful to partition the destination drive into several volumes, one (or more) for clones & one (or more) for other uses like storing files you don't want to remove from that drive. Disk Utility usually will let you 'shrink' an existing partition & add one or more new partitions after it on a drive. This avoids the need to reformat the drive to partition it, which would erase everything on it. Disk Utility's help explains how to do this, but please ask for help with anything you don't understand about it if you need or want to do that.
BTW, "CCC" is Carbon Copy Cloner, a 'donation-ware' third party utility well regarded by the Mac community.

  • Windows 7 upgrade: discs will include the option for a 32 to 64-bit upgrade via a clean install?

I would like to know whether the Lenovo Windows 7 upgrade discs will include the option for a 32 to 64-bit upgrade via a clean install?  I called Mentor today and was told the answer is no, but I was hoping someone here could tell me differently.
If "no" is truly the answer, I would like to voice my complaint: The upgrade discs from Microsoft (i.e. the retail upgrade discs) include both the 32 and 64-bit versions, so I don't completely understand why Lenovo's upgrade program doesn't offer the same thing.  I purchased my T500 in August, and back then Vista Ultimate 64 was not offered, so I chose Vista Ultimate 32 thinking that I could later upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate 64.  This assumption was based off of the info. on Microsoft's website indicating that all upgrades would contain the 32 and 64-bit versions.  I even customized my computer with 4 gigs of RAM thinking that I could take advantage of the extra gig once I installed Windows 7 64.
I don't understand what Lenovo or Mentor Media have to gain by restricting a 32 to 64-bit install.  I voiced this opinion to Mentor Media over the phone, who responded by saying that I should be happy since I am receiving a "free" upgrade.  I don't think this is an accurate assessment for two reasons: (1) I had to pay $17.03 for shipping, and I still haven't received the upgrade and (2) The total cost of my computer was almost $3,000, and the purchase was made a mere few weeks before Windows 7 was released.  $3,000 is a lot of money.  I waited for the details of the Windows 7 Upgrade Program to be announced BEFORE purchasing my machine.  When I finally bought my computer I accounted Windows 7 into the price I was paying.  In addition, when I bought this computer I did so expecting good customer service as a given.  Not providing a 64-bit upgrade without a rational explanation as to why does not qualify as appropriate customer service.
As most of you know, 4 gigs of RAM is useless with a 32-bit OS.  Also, NOW Lenovo is building new T500s with the option of having Windows 7 Ultimate 64 (why wasn't Vista Ultimate 64 offered when I bought my computer???).  And the price for choosing Windows 7 Ultimate 32 is EQUAL to the price for choosing Windows 7 Ultimate 64, which proves that there is no cost difference.  I just want to know what Lenovo has to gain by denying customers a 64-bit upgrade?  There would really be no additional cost since as I mentioned before, Microsoft's retail upgrade includes the 32 and 64-bit OS on one disc.  If anything I would think that it's costing Lenovo money to strip the 64-bit install from the upgrade discs.
Can anyone please address my problems?  Do you think there is anyone at Lenovo I could contact to voice my opinions?  I have been a loyal Thinkpad customer for over 5 years now, and I expect better from Lenovo.  Thank you for reading!

Is there any way to request a 64-bit OEM?  Why should Lenovo care whether I want a 32-bit or 64-bit as long as it's the same edition (Ultimate edition)?
if your system shipped with a 32-bit version of vista then you will be sent 32-bit windows 7 upgrade media.   the reason for this is two-fold.
first, because this is upgrade media, it's impossible to install a 64-bit version of windows over a 32-bit version.   doing so would require a clean installation and upgrade media simply won't allow this.   this is the case with retail media, too.   if you had 32-bit vista installed and wanted to upgrade it to 64-bit using retail media, you'd have to wipe your system or set up a dual-boot.
second, the COA (certificate of authenticity) on the bottom of your system is for vista.   because of this, your new license is of an upgrade from vista to 7.   this is how microsoft licenses it and it is their policy, not lenovo's.   microsoft's policy with OEMs is that you must install vista first, then upgrade to 7 (unless, of course, you purchased your system native with 7 on or after the 22nd).   since your original lenovo preload is of a 32-bit OS, the issue becomes circular and you'll have to refer again to the first reason.
i understand your frustration and wish this stuff were made easier for everyone.   it's repetative reading post after post of people with 4GB installed who don't understand the limitations of a 32-bit environment.   i wish both manufacturers and users switched to 64-bit OSes sooner.   the same thing happened when the industry went from 16-bit windows 3.11 to 32-bit windows NT4/95 and limitations went from 16KB all the way up to 4GB (which, in 1995, no one thought we'd ever exceed).   the difference is that people were complaining on BBSes over 14.4k modems instead of on GUI-based forums using broadband connections.   times sure have changed.

  • Clean install without losing everything

I need to upgrade to Tiger in order to run MSOffice2008.
I've been told by several people that stepping up to a new OS generally goes better with a 'clean install' which I understand to mean completely wiping out my hard drive -- starting over from scratch basically.
So I'm trying to figure out how to do this without losing all my stuff.
    My plan/My questions
1.) Back up everything to an external hard drive (Any suggestions for a good 250-500GB drive? Is there any software that can be used to 'manage' this kind of back up?)
2.) Format the drive. (How exactly do I do this?)
3.) Bring all my documents and apps back. (The documents are easy enough to bring back, but I'm worried about the applications. For example how do I get all my emails back for the Mail app? What about my different Quicken records? Aren't applications kind of split into pieces and spread over different locations (like librarys and stuff?). If so, how do I get them back? I can reinstall them (like Quicken) from their disks, but how to I get my data?)
Hoping someone can point me in the right direction to get started.
    Peter

Format the drive. (How exactly do I do this?
Actually, on the two I linked to, they are already formatted for Macs & pretested, but should you ever need to, or just want to partition it...
Either open Disk Utility in Applications/Utilities from your Hard Drive, or...
" 1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility."
Highlight the new drive, select erase, and btw, check install OS9 Driveers if you think you might ever need to read or write to the OSX volume from OS9.

You cannot use a Windows machine.
No idea if this will work because you have/had Ubuntu installed - hit Command + Option + R keys while restarting/booting up. Once in the Utilities, make sure the drive is formatted correctly and erase it, then reinstall the OS.

  • Clean Install with Mountain Lion, including backing up files and Parallels

    Hello,
I could use all the the advise I can get. Since switching over to the Mac, I have had to retrain my brain on how to do certain installations. I am planning on doing my first reformatting with an Apple and need some advise.
    This is my current configuration:
    OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leapord
    Parallels 5 with Windows XP
    My planned configuration:
Mountain Lion (clean install, no upgrade)
    Parallels 8 with Windows 7 or 8
    Here are my questions:
    1. From what I read, I can download Mountain Lion and set it up on a flash drive from the disk utility. I have found some info on that and feel confident in doing so. When I reformat my machine, I do not want to reinstall Snow Leopard. Is the Mountain Lion downlad the full version? Is there no upgrade version, like Windows? Would I need to install Snow Leopard first? Anything that I need to know?
    2. Assuming I successfully download and install a clean version of Mountain Lion, I would like to place my backup files back on my computer. For some reason, my Time Machine has been failing on the backups. I am thinknig that I need to get a new backup drive. Also, my backups have been occurring over my wireless network. I may plan on plugging the drive directly into my computer so that it copies over a lot faster. In order to completely restore all of my files carefully, do I run a successful backup of my computer with time machine and then restore it through the disk utility? Since I need to upgrade my Parallels, would I be copying over legacy Parallels files to my new install? If so, would those interfere with my new Parallels?
    3. I am assuming that I will have issues reinstalling my old parallels and then doing the upgrade for the upgrade price. Would I have to purchase a full version on Parallels?
    4. Any other advise that you can give? I really appreciate everyones help!
    Thanks

Yes. Mountain Lion you purchase through the App Store is the full version.
No. You do not need to install SL. But there must be a volume, on the internal hard drive, formatted HFS+ with GUID partition scheme.
You can also create or recreate the Volume/Partition launching Disk Utility during the setup process.

Usually I manually recover my documents and preferences from backups. It may seem at first a long and tedious task, but I never had any major issues that other users had in upgrading.
I do have VMware Fusion. I installed only the latest version of the program, with new s/n licence. The first time I executed Fusion, the program asked me to update the old VMs, that I did.
I think you can do the same with Parallels.

  • Clean install of Mountain Lion not working and everything's gone!

Created bootable USB install of Mountain Lion to do clean install so I could give my laptop to my sister - erased partition via disk utility - only USB Mac OSX Install ESD shows up for startup disks and that doesn't work when I try to install from there! HELP!
There WAS a recovery disk but I erased that too. I think it's a complete blank computer and the USB drive has nothing to open it with... no clue why it's not working otherwise!

Thing is, that bootable copy isn't really a bootcable copy unless you created that via some non-Apple guides on the web.  The one off Apple's site that tells you how to make a bootable USB stick doesn't actually put the install files on there.  It just puts the necessary files to get it booted and up to the web to do a download of it.
This is the writeup you need to follow.  http://osxdaily.com/2012/02/17/make-bootable-os-x-10-8-mountain-lion-usb-install -drive/
Of course, if your laptop came with ML already on it, you won't be able to download the installer because they'll make you pay for it no matter what.  You'll need to get your hands on that .app file so you can extract the necessary .dmg file from it.  The nice part is, it doesn't matter where that .app file comes from (Purchase ID wise), you just need one folder out of it and that's all.  If you have a friend that upgraded to ML and has the ability to redownload the app from the store, you can get it that way.
Again, as long as your laptop came with ML preinstalled, this is legal to do.  If it did not and it came with Lion, then you need to install Lion on it before you can legally give it away or sell it with the appropriate OS license on it.

  • Spring clean: re-installing everything I need, and nothing else

    Hello,
I wonder if anyone can advise me on order of installing Creative Suite applications? I currently have all of CS4, all of CS5, and all of the CS5.5 Creative Suite applications installed. It's cluttered and I don't like it. And I'd like to have CS3 back, but know I can't do it in the wrong order.
I'm thinking of doing a big renewal my Mac by doing a clean re-install of Snow Leopard, then installing the following applications in the following order:
    1. InDesign CS3 (but not the rest of the applications in the Suite)
    2. InDesign CS4 (but not the rest of the applications in the Suite)
    3. All applications of CS5.5 Creative Suite.
Does this sound like a bad idea? I never use the earlier versions of Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Photoshop etc. but I need different versions of InDesign to deal with various clients, saving down, etc..
Any advice would be much appreciated -- Jeremy

So far, all of your advice seems to have come up trumps... For what it's worth, I've done a clean install of Lion, re-installed and updated InDesign 5.0.4, 6.0.6, 7.5.1 (skipping 5.0) and all other applications of CS 5.5 Design Premium.
It's early days yet, but the transition went smoothly and so far they all seem to be playing nicely with each other. (I don't have the CS3/4 printer crashing problem as my work computer doesn't even have a printer installed).
Thanks to all again -- I really appreciate it -- Jeremy

  • I just bought a used MBA 2013. The name of the first owner appears in every place, even after I erased everything from him in the machine. A clean install would help? Will I lose I Life?

If I make a clean install of the MacOS, will I lose I Life?
Is it possible to erase all information from the previous owner of the MBA?
