Clean install lion when already on Lion?

How do I clean install lion when i'm already on lion?

Your best bet would be to create a Lion Boot Disc which is actually quite easy with the OS X Lion installer and Disk Utility.  The problem is that since your are already running Lion, I don't think it will allow you to re-download it to make the boot disc.  One option would be to clean install Snow Leopard, download the OS X Lion installer from the Mac App Store and make the boot disc.  It would be easier to use another computer that already has Snow Leopard installed and fully updated to make the boot disc.  All you would have to do is sign into the App Store on the other computer and Lion should be under purchased, just don't forget to log out if the other computer is not your own.  Regardless, here are the instructions on making a Lion Boot Disc:
Performing a clean install of Lion is easy once you create a Lion Boot Disc.  How do I create a Lion Boot Disc, you ask?  That's easy too! Just follow these instructions:  http://www.macrumors.com/2011/07/18/make-an-os-x-lion-boot-disc/
The fact is that the Lion installer is packaged around a bootable disk image that can easily be burned to a standard 4.7GB DVD.  With the boot disk you can run disk utility to erase your Mac, and then clean install just like you could with every other version of Mac OS X.  Just don't forget to backup all your data!!!

  • Clean install from Leopard to M. Lion on new disk

I have a late 2007 MacBook Pro with 10.5.8 and a too small disk. I just purchased a 500GB internal disk. I'd like to do a clean install from Leopard to Mountain Lion using the new disk. What is the recommended procedure? I'd like to avoid the extra step of installing Snow Leopard first as documented.

Well, I wouldn't do it that way, too many steps.
    I would:
    1. Clone your current drive to the external drive, instead of using Time Machine. (Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper)
    2. Boot from your external drive, update it to Snow Leopard.
    3. Purchase and download ML from that external boot. Save a copy of the installer to a location other than the Applications folder, that way it won't be erased after you use it. (verify that you've made a copy and not just an alias)
    4. Install your new drive, format it.
    5. Boot from your external, run the ML installer, select your new empty internal as the install destination, when prompted, use Setup Assistant to migrate your data from the external to the internal.
    6. When done, you should have a fresh install of ML on your new internal and a bootable SL on your external as a backup. If you decide that you want to go back to SL, you can just erase the internal and clone the external back to the internal.
Note: You don't need to make a bootable USB installer, they're too slow anyway. Just keep a copy of the ML installer on your external, bootable drive, so that you won't have to download it again.
Another option: Since you're replacing the intrenal with a 500 Gig drive, you could partition it to two 250 Gig partitions. Put ML on one and SL on the other, i.e.,

  • Why do we have to buy mountain lion when we bought lion? Others who didn't purchase lion don't have to pay for it to move to mountain lion

why do we have to buy mountain lion when we bought lion? Others who didn't purchase lion don't have to pay for it to move to mountain lion.

As far as I know the only people not having to pay for Mountain Lion are the ones that have purchased a apple computer after the 4th of june or something. These people get a free upgrade. All others will have to pay for a copy of Mountian Lion.
Do you maybe have a source, which states that others don't have to pay for it, where people that have bought Lion do have to pay?

  • Could someone help me with instructions for doing a clean install for iMac with mountain lion 10.8.4 ?

Could someone help me with instructions for doing a clean install for Could someone help me with instructions for doing a clean install for an early 2009 iMac 20"  with Mountain Lion 10.8.4 ?
       Thank You,

       Barney,  William,  nbar, Galt\'s Gulch:
A nephew stayed with us to take a course at the local community college last semester. I allowed him use of my mac for research just after I installed Mountain Lion. He decided to "help out" and ran a 3rd party clean and tune up app., Magician.  The tune up wiped over 1200 titles of my music in iTunes,  also a path of folders with names containing nothing but more empty folders with names. Almost every program I open and run for a short time crashes, also folders and programs are in wrong places, or cannot be located (the nephew, for instance). Up to this time I have always been able to track a problem far enough to resolve it by careful persistence and good luck, but I do not have the tech savvy to solve this one without getting in deeper. I have run disk utility saveral times and always get  variations of this:
ACL found but not expected on
    "private/etc/resolve.conf"
    "private/etc/raddb/sites-enabled/inner-tunnel"
    "private/etc/rabbd/sites-enabled/control-socket"
Also, after four years of intense daily use it is cluttered with much junk,  and every app that I was curious about, and I am a very curious guy.
So I know my limits, (and now my nephew). I dumped my pc for a Strawberry iMac a few years ago, and so far every problem I've encountered, or brought on myself, the Mac has resolved with its own inner elegance - in spite of my novice bungels - and now I honestly feel ashamed, in addition to the need to apologize to a machine for allowing a peasant into the Royal Grounds - so I am calling the Wise Ones in for this one.
Crazy, I know, but to me a Mac represents something far beyond the ordinary  input ➛ process  ➛ output  title/function customarily assigned to a machine - I sense an odd kind of morality involved, one that I need to respect.
So, these are my reasons for wanting to do a clean install, correctly.
            Thank you,  Truitt

  • L7780 All in One - Windows 7 Clean Install - Error when printing

I have a huge problem with a failry new L7780 all in one. I has stopped printing from my laptop. I recently upgraded to Windows 7 with a clean install from Vista....ergo I formated the disk and then reinstalled Windows 7 . And, now every time I print I get the following message "the job has failed due to an error on the printing system"
The printer is selected as default.
The printer does connect through wireless onto my network , and does appear on my PC as connected. However, once I press print after a few seconds it seems to disappear.
I have not altered any network settings and MAC address is off on my router. It was working fine on 2 Home pc's running XP, worked great with Vista. And its only this one Laptop with Windows 7 that can't print to it for some reason.
However, sometimes when I have shutdown...all of a sudden it prints out what I asked it to 30 minutes ago.
I have tried installed and re-installing drivers.
I have tried forced start ups .
Switching it off at the mains.
    Resetting the network adpater.
I can only think at this stage there is a compatibility issue with Windows 7.
Any clues? Any help anyone can offer.
    Cheers,
    Steve

  • Why does Mac keep installing printer when already installed?

I have a client that has Mac Air running Mountain Lion 10.8 connected to LAN via WiFi.  The printer is an Epson WF-3520 connected to LAN via ethernet cable.  The router running pfSense has Bonjour services allowed between LAN and WiFi.  The Mac keeps re-installing the printer and increments the printer queue each time.  The highest enumeration has gotten to -57 after the printer name.  Other Macs in the same LAN do the same thing.  Trying to figure out why the Mac forgets the printer is already installed.  I have done everything I can think of except re-setting the printer system.
    Thanks for any pointers.

FYI- in case this can help others.  What I eventually did was move the printer off the ethernet cable and made it wireless too, like the desktops clients in the office.  No more problems with the printer increasing enumerations on the Macs.  Evidently the router/firewall was creating some issue even though there are not rules blocking traffic between the 2 wired versus wireless clients interfaces.

  • How to install CS2 when already have CS PS4, 5, LR2 & Reader 9?

Feb 28, 2010- I had CS2 Premium on my old laptop.  I'd updated to PS 3 and then to PS 4 (standard). Then my LT crashed.  I now have a desktop: Quad processer, 64-bit, 8 GB ram, two hard drives (C: 1 TB and D: 2 TB).
I've installed PS 4 & 5, Reader 9 and Lightroom 2, and now find I need InDesign for a newsletter.
How can I install all of the CS2 Premium files (except PS) without damaging my current Adobe program files?  CS 2 came on four discs, with two "Extras", so I can't tell which ones have which program.
    Thanks in advance.

  • How do I do a clean install of Mountain Lion?

I already have Mac OS X Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro A1126, but how can I do a clean install on it? Do I have to buy a installation disc or from Mac App Store?
    Thanks in advance!

I differentiate between a 'clean' installation and a 'fresh' installation by this meaning: a 'clean' installation means that you're going to erase the boot drive and 'cleanly' install everything, including OS X anew, whereas, for me, a 'fresh' installation means only that you're NOT going to erase the entire drive, but only install a 'fresh' version of OS X.
So which do you wish to do?
Either way, you should just be able to boot into your Recovery partition (hold down the command and R keys whilst booting) and then either install a 'fresh' version of OS X, or erase the contents of the drive, using Disk Utility, and do a 'clean' install of OS X.
Mountain Lion does not come on a disc - you should have purchased it via the App Store and you may need your Apple ID to install again from the Recovery partition.
    Does that help?

  • I cannot Clean Install Lion.

I had lion installed (all updates) and I had to reinstall because I was having problems with speed and stability of the system. Now I cannot install it neither from the Recovery HD partition nor the usb and the dvd disk that I burned from the InstallerESD.dmg that I found on the internet that works as a media for a clean install. When I use the DVD version that I burned and before I choose anything for the installation process, just after the loader finishes loading, I get an error message telling me that Installation failed, try to reinstall. (duh! that's what im trying to do anyway!). With the usb hd that I mounted the .dmg after I startup my system with the opt key pressed and after choosing the USB disk to boot, I get a "forbidden sign", Circle with a diagonal line in the middle, just where the apple logo was and the system hangs there. The computer is an iMac 21,5'' with 16GB Ram, May 2011 model.
I don't have the snow leopard disk. I just have another macbook that has lion installed.
    What can I do?
    Thank you
EDIT: Also I tryied mounting with the Lion recovery tool the recovery partition on a usb flash drive so I can boot up from there and download and install from scratch the OS. But I still get the weird "No access" sign in the apple logo after booting from the usb drive.

You can call AppleCare and then place your order. You can reach AppleCare at:
    Greece
    00800 44145417
    www.apple.com/gr/support/
Explain that you need to order duplicates of the original Install DVDs, you will need the serial number and a credit card to order.
If you still have the original box the computer shipped in look again, it's incredibly unusual for machines that came prior to Lion (10.7.x) to not include the media. It's easy to overlook but it's probably there. You will find a small box that included the owners manual, it's packed with the manual.

  • Migration Assistant and Time Machine Problems on Clean Install of OS Lion

I just completed a clean install of Mac OS X Lion. However, the Migration Assistant application does not detect my time machine backup on my external hard drive when I try to copy my files to my mac. Is there a way where I can transfer my files?

Are you sure its not shown?  It should have a yellow or green icon, and list the name of the system and HD that was backed-up, not the one it's on.
If not, try to repair the backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • How do I get MS Office 2011 to install from DVD on Mountain Lion?

I just did a clean install of OS X Mountain Lion from a prepared bootable SD-Card on a new partition of my harddrive and wanted to install Microsoft Office 2011 using the original disc. But after double clicking the installer icon nothing happened besides the rainbow colored spinner showing up and disappearing shortly after and my optical drive making some noise. Activity Monitor indicated that the process of the Installer application doesn't react so I had to force quit it. I tried it multiple times to install MS Office this way using the disc but the problem persisted, also after a reboot.
So far my system is still in a pretty fresh state since I installed hardly any separate apps yet and the most intrusive one of them is probably merely Sophos. OS X's Installer app worked the way it should when I was installing iLife the day before using the Applications Install DVD that came with my Mac.
When I installed Office 2011 the first time, presumably one year ago on another partition on the same Mac which was running OS 10.6, everything worked fine and the same is true for the time when I upgraded to OS 10.7 (although I didn't install Office again, I just kept everything on the same partition).
So is there anyone out there who experienced similiar problems and can please help solve this problem?

Well, that depends on what you mean when you say "verified". But as I wrote in the first post I was able to install iLife from disc on Mountain Lion without much ado. And just now I tested a DVD with some pictures on it and the disc drive would read and display all photos in Preview.
And given the facts that I rarely use my optical drive at all and that my machine is only little more than a year old, a drive failure seems quite unlikely. But thanks for your response anyway!

  • How do I do a clean install, and keep mail accounts?

A little background: We have several Macs, and several email accounts. We're buying new machines and on some would like to mostly start over, using the App Store to install programs as each machine requires, cutting out a lot of the disk loading.
The most important goal is to get a fresh install, BUT keep all the various Mail accounts (let's establish that as a starting point). BTW: All our machines have the same Mail accounts across the board.
What I'm getting so far is a bloated HDD when I try to upgrade directly over Snow Leopard, and a nice tight machine that lacks the Mail accounts when doing a clean install.
SPECIAL REQUEST: I normally appreciate when people take guesses about offering solutions, BUT in this case I would appreciate it if answers addressed the specific question of preforming an almost clean install that retained all the email accounts, their configurations, and their messages. I realize that the solution request here may be a bridge too far, but I thought I would ask because I suspect a lot of people moving to the mid-2011 MacBook Air might need such a solution too.
    Thanks in advance!
    Chris

    Found the answer elsewhere.
Working with 2 machines; original one with Snow Leopard and the source email accounts/messages/etc., and a second machine with a Clean Install of OSX 10.7 Lion loaded to a fresh or reformatted hard drive. In my case, coming from a 24" iMac (320GB HD) that had the source email accounts I wanted to keep, and going to a new mid-2011 MacBook Air with 128GB HD.
Long story short, starting from the "user"/Library/... account on the Snow Leopard machine, 3 things have to be copied to the Lion machine and placed in the same directories:
    /Keychains
    /Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
    /Mail (folder)
Keep in mind that the user Library is a hidden folder in Lion.

  • Clean install on the MBP 13" 2012

    Hi Guys,
Last time I tried to format my Mac and do clean install, but when I opened App Store, I still have to pay for the OSX Mountain Lion which I thought I bought MBP with mountain lion installed in it.
And I still have to pay to download it?
    Installer CD isnt there anymore.
So I think of a way to do a clean install using Cmd + R on the startup.
    1. cmd R
    2. disk utilities to format
    3. re-install osx
    Does this work?
Or I still have to buy OSX Mountain lion installer?
    Thanks

If your Mac came with OS X Mountain Lion, it won't appear in Purchases tab because you can only install it from Internet Recovery. Press Command and R keys while your computer is starting and follow the steps you said

  • How do I do a clean install of Snow Leopard on a mid 2010 13" MacBook Pro

    Hello All,
I am replacing a dead hard drive without any backups (I'm fixing someone else's computer), so I want to do a clean install.  When I boot the retail Snow Leopard DVD, I get a kernel panic.  Is this the wrong DVD?  I don't have the original DVD that came with the Macbook Pro, so I don't know what version it's supposed to be.
Specs: mid 2010 Macbook Pro 13" with nVidia 320, Intel Core 2 Duo, and 4GB RAM.
The kernel panic had me thinking maybe I had bad RAM, but I've already swapped out the RAM with same results.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

    Thanks, Niel.
Apple Support sent me a Snow Leopard DVD 10.6.4 - not retail, but the original one that came with the MacBook Pro.  However, I did not get a chance to use it, but I'm sure it'll work.
What I did instead was to make a USB thumb drive of Mavericks 10.9.2.  It installed without any problems on the 2010 MacBook Pro.  No kernel panics, etc.  Thanks for your help.
