Clean install of iTunes 9 fixes problems

I upgraded to iTunes 9 and immediately noticed a drop in performance:
1. The 1-click download feature (which we are now forced to use) took forever to add new songs. I mean several minutes just to add it to the download queue.
2. Downloading songs would take 20-30 minutes.
3. When songs finished downloading it would say "Processing..." and then just hand there forever.
Restarting iTunes 9 caused those songs that were processing to disappear. I finally decided to uninstall everything apple and reinstall iTunes 9. This seems to have fixed the issues that I have noted above. If you're on Windows XP. I would recommend uninstalling iTunes/Quicktime/Etc. and doing a clean install.
Pssst... Apple stop making smug commercials and fix your software.

You must uninstall iTunes 8 before installing the previous version.
If you want a complete removal here are some steps:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925
I assume you have an installer for iTunes 7?
I think you can get it from here:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/#itunes%207%20windows
otherwise google FileHippo itunes.
After you install it it will not open because the library was created with a later version. You have to rebuild your library from iTunes Music Library.xml.

  • How do I do a clean install of iTunes ?

how do I do a clean install of iTunes ?
One of the guys at apple support suggested I do this after I upgraded itunes - now it shuts itself down after 2 seconds !!!
When is apple going to fix this ?

Is there something Apple needs to fix? While you and a handful of other people are having problems there are  millions of others who do not come here and post simply because they are not having problems.  Given the complexity of computers there is likely some small file that is not being installed properly or there is something else you have installed that is conflicting with other software, or your computer file management is having problems and something is not where it should be.
First, I would check if it is really a problem with the application. You do not provide details on what is happening so it is hard to help.  Try starting itunes in Safe Mode:
    iTunes Safe Mode - http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20090915214613484
iTunes: Troubleshooting issues with third-party iTunes plug-ins - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3430 - hold down the Option and Command keys (on Mac OS X) or holding down the Shift and Control keys (on Windows) while opening iTunes
If that doesn't help (short-term), restart normally but hold down the option key and make a new, blank library.  If itunes starts that way then you have a corrupt library file and it will need to be rebuilt (more information later if that is indeed the issue).
If you're determined to reinstall itunes, I don't know if this works with Lion since I believe they really tied itunes into the operating system rather than leaving it as an independent application, but try dragging the iTunes application in your Application folder to the trash, then empty the trash.  Back up your computer before installing any new software.  If the update does something you don't like this is the only way to revert.
Verify your hard drive with Disk Utility's First Aid.  If it reports problems then that has to be dealt with before you do anything else.
Use Disk Utility to repair permissions.
Download the update from Apple.  Some of us don't use Software Update to actually update, just so we know the installer file is safe and sound on our computers for use.
    Install the update.
    Repair permissions again.
    Restart your computer.
There are also preferences files that could be the issue. Those are hidden from you in Lion and again, it's a separate post on how to deal with those.

  • Forcing a clean install of iTunes : Windows 7

I have never has any problems installing updates to iTunes, but now I have reached my breaking point after wasting countless hours trying to get the latest version (freshly downloaded) of iTunes to install.  Bottom line. it should not have to be this hard to install an app!! I have spent hours at this, and am completely exhausted..
Out of the blue , I am suddenly getting install errors such as Error Getting file security Get Last  Error 5, and Procedure entry point errors, DLL files not found, etc Why? Where is this all coming from.?  I have goggled and read many "solutions" and workarounds which take you to the bowels of Windows...making changes to security, and owners and manually deleting dlls  etc. but nothing works.
I have installed and uninstalled and re installed, and removed and repaired and ran as administrator a dozen times. I am exhausted. This is all really nonsense. Who has time for this??
Is there any sure fire way to force a clean install of iTunes so that it works?
I am all out of options. Any help would be appreciated.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

Any other suggestions out there folks?

On Oracle Metalink site, there are many documents which says that Oracle 32 bit software works on 32 bits OS and 64 bits software works on 64 bits OS. Official support is only in those combination....
So there is no good way to help you in your case-XE is 32 bit application with hard codded compiled libraries which most of them would not work on 64 bit OS.
    Sorry

  • Clean install but iTunes is missing files?

I've had my itunes folder and all media on an external drive for a few years with no problems. Last weekend I did a clean install of ML on a new SD drive.
The install went fine and after it was done I pointed itunes to the media folder on the external drive that I have been using for years. Itunes seems to have accepted the folder but itunes is missing albums , songs and movies that are on the drive and in the correct folders. It's showing half of the movies I have in my movies folder. Any idea what's going on? Why would itunes see some of my media but not all? I have itunes match also if that's part of the puzzle.....
    Thanks!

  • I cannot connect to the login page of my banking websites for Firefox but can from IE also firefox does not close when I shut it down I have just done a clean instal of windowsws7 and teh problem persists on reinstall of FF3.6.13

I can connect with my banking websites but the login page will not come up. This is a recent occurrence and I have done virus scans and have also recently done a clean instal of Windows 7. The problem persists. I can connect to any other website with no problems. When I close FF it appears to close and Task manager shows as not running but it will not reopen. If I attempt to uninstall I am told that FF is running and needs to be closed. I have to reboot to get to close and be able to reopen.
I can connect to the bank sites with IE. However I really don't like IE.
I am using Win7 Professional on a Sony notebook VGN SZ55

I don't have an answer, but I experienced the same problems trying to set up an airport express to route traffic to my stereo.
Apple Extreme router, iMac and laptop all worked just fine for months, upon installing Airport Express (step by step, according to instructions), all **** broke loose. Airport Utility was unable to see my Airport Extreme router, after hours of rebooting computer, cable modem, router, and finally a hard reset of the Airport Extreme router, it is finally recognized by Airport Utility again.
Recreated network, iMac connects to the internet just fine, laptop (Macbook Air) connects to the network just fine, but will not connect to the internet. Network diagnostics does not help, it gets to the "do you have a router? If so, reboot" stage, and never seems to see the router.
    Any suggestions?

  • Firefox has suddenly stopped connecting on one of three user accounts on the same computer. That account still connects with Safari - but not Firefox. A clean-install has not solved the problem. Help?

Three user accounts on the same computer all link to a single copy of Firefox 3.6.8 - but one of them has suddenly lost its ability to use the program. Firefox opens in that account, but it cannot connect to the Internet. 'Done' appears at the lower left of a blank Firefox page [it's set to load a blank page initially], as though a page had finished downloading ... but Firefox does not actually generate any Internet activityx.
Previously, the Firefox connection for this account was smooth and reliable. I haven't added, upgraded or downloaded any new programs, nor made any other computer changes in recent weeks or months.
Puzzlingly - that same account still connects successfully to the Internet via Safari. And the other accounts on the same computer continue to use Firefox with no problem - including a test user-account that I set up today to help troubleshoot the problem. The blockage is restricted solely to Firefox with that one user account.
Following your Support page instructions, I did a clean-install of Firefox 3.6.8, removing both the existing Firefox 3.6.8 and the Library/Application Support/Firefox folder. Going the extra mile, I checked all accounts to be certain that no Firefox folders remained in any of them - then emptied the Trash and restarted before installing a freshly downloaded 3.6.8. But blimey - the blockage still persists for that one user account.
Firefox shows no visible cookies that might influence the connection. [It's set to delete all cookies upon closing anyway.] And I see no obvious instructions in Mac's firewall or any software program to refuse access to Firefox. The computer is stand-alone, not networked. And in any case, Firefox works just fine in the two other user accounts.
Deleting the hobbled user account is not feasible. So what is causing this roadblock? Did I miss a step in the clean-install? How can that account resume using Firefox?
Thanks in advance for your advice.

If files already have been downloaded then remove the files in the updates and updates\0 folder.
You can also delete active-update.xml and possibly updates.xml (stores the update history).

  • HP Stream 13 tried clean install windows 10. Big Problem

EDIT:  I have am HP Stream 13 that came with 8.1   The hard drive ont hese things is not large enough to compleate the upgrade to windows 10. So i preformed a clean install from a USB.  Now i have 10 and it is not activated.  NOW I read that you MUSST preform the upgrade first in order for windows to detect your hardware and register it as valis for the free windows 10.   BUT since upgrade was not posible I have a windows 8.1 key that is useless since there is no service to change the key to a windows 10 key..   This is insane. these laptops are being advertisd with the free upgrade to windows 10 yet are not able to be upgraded.  Not sure what to do now.    I am running a new HP stream 13 touchscreen with windows 8.1 I want to upgrade to windows 10 before I am back to school (before i have to install all kinds of software and files) Obciously the Stream does not have enough SSD left to preform the upgrade.  I have created a clean install USB thumb drive but am worried about using it.  From what i have read the recovery partition that is not deleteable houses files that the system accesses. When i do a Clean install wiping the C drive (but not the partition) will everything work? will i loose the use of that partition space forever?   and lastly I used a program to access my windows key since it is located in the bios not on a sticker but I want to know if anyone else has done this and did it auto detect? or did they run in to any problems.  Sorry if this is all posted somewhere else but i am not finding any information at all.  EDIT!   I do have a USB recovery that i can use if i must to windows 8.1    I installed 10 from a USB and it is workign fine other than it is now saying my KEY isnt valid for this clean install. How do i convert my 8.1 key to a key that will work for 10? I cant see myself buying a new key from microsoft when the laptop was sold with an advert saying free upgrade to 10.   It isnt posible to do a upgrade because of the space required for the upgrade to do its work. this is a real pain.

Hi, 1. You can have this option: create a Recovery media (USB key) then delete the Recovery partition, this will give you more room.2. Not 100% work unless Windows 10 or you can dind all drivers for your computer. Again, to get more space, you can delete Recovery partition but please create a Recovery set/media first.3. I upgraded 5 laptops on weekend inluding 2 HP laptops. I used tool to get the keys by Windows 10 upgrade (not clean install) could detect the keys in BIOS. I still have few more laptops and my children laptops I will upgrade. I won't do clean install because I don't want to spend time to re-install all programs/applications again. Regards.

  • Does a clean install of lion help with problems?

Anybody who has had the litany of problems associated with lion tried an absolute clean install to see if that helps?

But It would be nice if just safari, mail, and the finder would work without giving me the spinning wheel at this time.
How much RAM do you have?  Also, open Activity Monitor, click the System Memory tab and look at your page ins and page outs.  If page outs is more than 1/10 of the page ins, you need more RAM.  I myself was having some beach balls when doing certain demanding things (playing games, using Aperture, etc), and noticed that these values were darn close to equal.  So I upgraded from 4 GB to 8 GB of RAM and all is now good, no matter what I'm doing.
My timemachine backups failed a few days ago, I lost my copy of a working SL backup at that time, so much for diligence.
Yeah, one backup is not nearly enough.  I can't tell you how many times I've seen people who didn't realize their backups were on their way out until the moment they actually needed them, and then it's too late.  Keep one Time Machine backup in the future, and at least one other backup with something like Carbon Copy Cloner.
I do think that it is important to know if others have had success with clean installs because I need to know if it is worth my while. Did you do a clean install?
But what I'm telling you is that it doesn't matter what others say.  Unless you know that the cause of their problems is exactly the same as the cause of your problems, what they say is irrelevant.  There are plenty of people here who have been helped by clean installs, but if all you need is more RAM, a clean install will be a waste of your time.
I did not do a clean install, I just installed Lion right on top of Snow Leopard.  And except for my memory issues, which were overall nonexistent except when (and after) running certain apps, it's been a pretty smooth transition.  But again, that has no bearing on your situation, except to tell you there's nothing inherently problematic about an upgrade install.

  • Clean Install and iTunes

I plan on doing a clean install of Leopard on my MBP. I would like to backup every single thing in iTunes. If I backup ~/Music/iTunes to my external hard drive will it also save all my Play Counts, Last Played, iPhone data, etc.?
Is there anything else I need to know before doing the clean install?
    Thanks!

If you back up the whole iTunes folder including the iTunes Library files you'll be saving everything. Your ratings etc. are store in the library files, I can't speak for the phone, I presume the phone data is also in the library file but since I don't own one I can't say for sure:
What are the iTunes library files?
Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • Trying to do clean install from USB after kernel problem

    MacBook Pro 13" Mid 2010
    - was running OS X v 10.9
    - 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
Machine was running extremely slow, unable to do anything with it. When booted to safe mode, lag issue was not present. Booted to Disk Utility, left column showed (photoshoped to show how it looked originally):
Verified and repaired Macintosh HD and disk1 - OS X Base System, no problems.
Booted Option R - Erased Macintosh HD,  tried to do new install from online, failed 3 times (took in excess of 8 hours each time). Still lagging, mouse movement very irratic.
Reset SMC, and NVRAM, some improvemet with mouse movement and speed
Read suggestions online to erase entire drive, boot from USB to DU, and install from bootable USB. Tried to do that. When in the boot from screen (Option) mouse lag not apparent. Chose USB, it opened up DU. Erased Macintosh HD again. Cannot delete or unmount OS X Base System, new screen looks like this:
From this screen, I exit back to the first screen and select Install OS X Mavericks, it gives me the choice to install on USB or Macintosh HD, I chose the latter, follow the steps, get a screen saying it's installing then it brings me back to DU after about 10 min. What am I missing here? Do I need to partition Macintosh HD creating a boot portion? I'm not a Mac person, I'm trying to fix this for my son.
Can I even do an install on Macintosh HD? I get that prior to booting to USB, I was using disk1, and so it couldn't be erased, but booting from the USB, would I not be using DU from the USB, and therefore able to clean the HD and start fresh? I'm guessing that the boot disk is causing the lag, and want to get rid of it.
Or is the disk showing disk3: OS X Install ESD accessible someone to do the install and I'm just going in circles?
I'd be extremely appreciative of any help you could provide, thank you.

Try this:  (1) On your Mac mount the disk in the Time Capsule (probably called "Data").  (2) In the "Data" volume locate and mount the "sparsebundle" image that contains the "old" backups.  (3) Click-and-hold on the Time Machine icon in the Dock, then choose from the pop-up menu the option to "Browse Other Time Machine Disks".  That should give you access to the old files.

  • With Windows Vista, the most recent Itunes update 1/30/2014 has caused Itunes not to work, with a Mscvr80.dll not found error. Uninstalled all Apple programs, and installed fresh Itunes. Same problem. Tried to reinstall using an older install exe nogo

Recent ITunes update has caused ITunes not to work. Tried uninstalling all Apple products and reinstalling fresh. Still doesn't work. Tried reinstalling from an old install.exe. Install went nicely but program won't start as it says it can't open the library file.

Now that I have no way of accessing any of the products I have purchased from ITunes, I will most certainly never use ITunes again for any reason. Why throw good money after bad?  I will use another MP3 player that is not as cumbersome or proprietary.
    Lesson learned.

  • Why do i always get a message saying that the when trying to dowload the software update for iphone 4? it is a brand new handset and a clean install of itunes.

i am trying to update my iphone 4 to the latest software version as promted on itunes and it gives me a timed out message. and an error code (err = 3259) it was downloading fine and then once it reached the end of the download it just stopped and gave me the error message. does anyone know why it would be doing this? i have only just recieved my iphone 4 today and i only installed itunes on my laptop which has never had itunes installed on previously.
also just a random one, the usb lead i have got for my new phone doesnt seem very durable...and i know my last usb lead went funny, and ive seen friends who have had to resort in wire tape....does anyone know if the usb lead is covered by the warrenty?

You might find this article helpful: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694
It has the error range of 3000's which states
Errors 3000-3999 (3002, 3004, 3013, 3014, 3018, 3164, 3194, and so on): Error codes in the 3000 range generally mean that iTunes cannot contact the gs.apple.com server on ports 80 or 443. This may be because out-of-date or incorrectly configured security or firewall software is interfering, an old version of iTunes is installed, an entry in your hosts file redirecting requests to gs.apple.com (see error 1004 above), or because of your Internet proxy settings. If you are using a proxy, try without using one or with a known-good network. If that does not resolve the issue, follow iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues. Error 3014 may indicate that you need to free up more disk space on the computer before trying to restore again. Error 3194 most likely indicates you do not have the latest version of iTunes installed Update to the latest version of iTunes.

  • Bootcamp Assistant: "'Create Windows 7 Install Disk Option' Missing" Fix Problem

Firstly, sorry if this is in the incorrect fourm area, it's related with the Mountain Lion OSx software, so I posted here.
    I am Running OSX 10.8.3
I'm trying to install bootcamp with a .ISO and a USB Drive. You need to make a Windows 7 install disk, and Bootcamp Assistant can do that for you, but the option isn't showing up.
    I am running OSX 10.8.3 M-Lion
The link below shows how to fix the issue......
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MD4kgJQ-r0c
I did everything as it says, until the 2:20 mark in the video, where he tells you to go to the USBSupportedModels and copy the first string that follows....
I couldn't find it,however,I found a similar one, shown below. I beleive it's the thing that I need to duplicate, but the strings, shown below, are considerably different.
    <key>PreUSBBootSupportedModels</key>
              <array>
                        <string>MacBook7,1</string>
                        <string>MacBookAir3,2</string>
                        <string>MacBookPro8,3</string>
                        <string>MacPro5,1</string>
                        <string>Macmini4,1</string>
                        <string>iMac12,2</string>
If you look in the Top comments section, there are people, running the same OSX as mine (10.8.3) saying that it's not working, with 2 people rating it up. There is a reply saying that it does work. However, I know if somthing is messed up, the Assistant would be rendered unusable, a risk i am hesitating to take. I Googled everywhere, but all I'm finding is the same fix for USBSupported over and over again.
Has anyone found a correct or know of a fix for this? OR should I just go ahead and do as the video says?
    Thanks!

Don't modify that file because anyway it won't work. The reason is that Apple has determined the Macs that support the Windows installation from a USB drive by their firmware. It means that if you modify that file you will be able to create a Windows 7 USB drive, but if you try to install Windows, your computer will show up a black screen in the next startup telling you that it hasn't found any bootable device.
You can edit that file if you want, but it's not sure that the option will show up in Boot Camp Assistant, and you won't be able to install Windows through a USB drive because the firmware of your computer doesn't support this
