Clean Install of Lion on SSD For Brand New Macbook Pro

I'm considering purchasing the base model of the current 13" Macbook Pro.  If I do, I'm planning on purchasing an SSD (most likely a Crucial model) and installing it.  My question is, before installing the SSD, do I need to format the SSD?  Additionally, am I able to simply install the SSD and then install Lion through the internet recovery option?  Finally, can I do all of this before ever turning the Macbook Pro on with the shipped HDD?  Or do I need to turn it on once just to register the OS and the iLife Suite to me so that I will be able to redownload them to the new SSD?  Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Here's an answer for you.
Buy an external usb enclosure. About $10.
Install your new SSD in that enclosure.
Open disk utility and format/erase your SSD using MAC OS Extended Journaled.
Once that's done, open Carbon Copy (free download if you don't have it).
Clone your old drive to your new drive.  You will get a pop up message saying that your new drive doesn't have a Lion Recovery Partition.  Create one using Carbon Copy then proceed with the clone.
After all is done, take out your old hard drive and install your new SSD in your Macbook.
Install your old drive to your external enclosure for back up purposes.
Turn on your Macbook and you're done.

  • Snow leopard to Lion Upgrade on a brand new Macbook Pro

My brand new macbook pro (bought september 2011) came with snow leopard installed. Am I really expected to buy a Lion upgrade for a brand new product?

    Not required.
Some have upgraded and want desperately to reinstall SL.  Some are happy with the move.  Some are not completely happy but will live with it and adapt.
Read here for the "new features" to see if the move is worth the risk to you http://www.apple.com/macosx/whats-new/features.html.
Regardless, first thing you need to do is get a mac-formated drive and make a TimeMachine or CarbonCopyClone (download for free) backup.  The only common and provable issue with Lion upgrade is that those who do NOT make a backup regret not havng it when/if they reinstall SL.

I recently purchased a brand new Macbook Pro Retina that runs on Mavericks.  I keep getting a message saying that my start up disk is almost full, even though I have almost no files on the hard drive other than whatever was pre-installed by Apple. Does anyone know how to resolve this problem?

  • New Install of Lightroom 3.5 on brand new MacBook Pro Hangs on launch

I received my new MacBook Pro last week, and I installed Lightroom 3.5 promptly.  I launched the software and was able to enter my serial number and inport some photos without problem.  I have been trying to launch Lightroom for the past 2 days and it displays the splash screen and then stops repsonding.  There are no periphials attached to my MacBook at this time.  I uninstalled the application, then reinstalled again.  Same thing.  Any suggestions???

Look for a file ending in .lock next to your catalog (the .lrcat file).  LR creates such a file to keep more than one user from using the catalog at a time and possibly corrupting it.  If LR does not close normally, the .lock file is left behind and blocks you from opening LR.  If you find that file, delete it.  Do not delete the other files such as .lrcat or .journal.  If that doesn't work, come back and let us know.

  • Word Processing Software for brand new MacBook Pro

Is it possible that my new MacBook Pro doesn't come with any word processing software? I never thought to ask about this before making my purchase.  I'm new to Apple--just came over from the PC darkside--and would love some help on this.  Thanks!

Ronda mentions TextEdit and whilst it is not as sophisticated as some high end word processing software, it does have more ability than a lot of people realize. Most people have not taken the time to explore it.
Peruse some of its features in the following link. It may be enough to suit your needs.

  • Battery for Brand New MacBook Pro 17"

    Hello,
I just purchased a new MacBook Pro 17".
What do I do with battery charing for the first use?
Apple's official battery resource: http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html does not effectively answer the question.
It writes "Be sure to fully charge your portable when you plug it in for the first time, and then run Software Update to ensure you have the latest software."
The question then is, do I run down the battery completely the first time (but never plugging it in), and then when it goes to sleep, charge it all the way up to full?
I basically want to know what to do for the first time - how long do I let the battery run down if at all?
    Thank you

Here's the dirty little secret about lithium batteries: Heat & frequent full discharge/recharge cycles are the two biggest killers of these batteries. Fact is, lithium batteries really don't like to be discharged below 40% of capacity very often. I'm typing this on a 4 1/2 year old MacBook Pro, and my battery is still going strong. It's fine to leave it plugged in all the time, that's what I do. Once every two-three months, I discharge it to about 40% & then recharge. So, charge yours till full, and try to never fully discharge the battery.

  • OS X Lion Crashing on my brand new Macbook Pro 2011 (721)

I have bought a 2011 Macbook Pro (721) 2 weeks ago and then the same day i upgraded it to OS X Lion. (10.7.1)
my os x lion have crashed so bad several times during this 2 weeks that i bought my mac, in a way that i could do nothing but holding the power button, and i supposed that apple's operating systems are not that easy to crash.
is it normal? I'd say it happened about 5 times in 2 weeks and it started from the second day. is something wrong with lion updates? i have read some forums that they say something may be wrong with firewire update.
** by the way in this 2 weeks i have not done anything special or any hard proccessing job. i just used it for internet.

  • How can I install logic pro 7.2 (made for power pc) on a brand new Macbook pro?

How can I install logic pro 7.2 (made for power pc) on a brand new Macbook pro with OSX 10.7.4?
This message appears: You can't open the aplication LogicPro.mpkg because power pc aplications are no longer compatible.
    Thanks folks

You should be able to copy all the files from your old computer, although it might not work if the old machine didn't have an intel processor. When I got a new Mac a few months ago, I used the migration assistant to copy everything from my old computer's time machine backup disk. All my old pro apps, such as Final Cut Pro 6, work fine on the new machine under Lion.
Later, I wanted to install Soundtrack pro and couldn't do it from the original disks. So I installed it on my old machine and copied the files. It worked perfectly.

I have a brand new macbook pro 15" with latest Lion. Can anyone tell me why, when I open word or preview etc that multiple files open? For eg if I open a word doc, the last 1-3 docs that I have worked previously on all open. Can anyone tell me why?

You have a choice as to whether or not applications in Lion like Word or Preview (or even Safari) save and re-open previous documents or windows... just hold down the option key while quitting a program and when you re-open it you won't get the previous documents or windows when you re-open the application. You can see this by selecting the open program in the menu bar and when holding down the option key the quit function will change to quit and discard open windows. This feature in Lion is referred to as "Resume" and is great if you want to restart an app and return to what you're doing (for example in Safari re-opening existing windows and tabs from your previous session). You still have the option to close individual windows within an app before quitting and they will not re-open when the app is launched again.
This Resume function is not related to saving your work (a word or text document for example). This is handled by Lion's "Auto-Save" and "Versions" functions. See http://www.apple.com/ca/macosx/whats-new/auto-save.html
Hopefully this is the complete answer you're looking for.

I can't watch YouTube videos on my brand new MacBook Pro with Lion. It says I need to download Adobe Flash Player but that won't install. Help!

The same thing happens to me, Safari asks me to update the Adobe FlasPlayer, I download, start the installation process, ask me my username and password in order to install, then see a window where I choose if I want to always install the updates , or ask first, or not inslate updates, and at this point it is not progress, I can not cancel the process, I turn off and turn on my machine.
    What can I do ..??

  • Lion thumb-drive for my 2008 macbook pro WONT INSTALL!!!!!!!!!!

I just bought the $69 Lion thumb-drive for my 2008 macbook pro (still running leopard) and when I insert the drive, the Lion Install screen opens up and it say "You cannot use this version of the application Install Mac OS X Lion with this version of Man OS X."
The Guy at the Apple store said it should just install! I hope somebody can help me through this, I shouldn't have to pay another ******* $30 to run something that was supossed to work in the first place!
    < Edited By Host >

Does that mean I will have to re-install all apps? Will I have to do this regardless??
I found this article written before the Apple Lion thumb drive came out and it references the quick but techie way at the bottom of article of altering the file /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist

Hi JoeyR.  Well, according to this link at the Apple Store, OS X Moutain Lion became available in July and I downloaded it for $19.99.  I figured I would do that before renewing my Norton security SW.  Are we talking about the same thing?

  • Adobe CS4 Indesign plugins missing when installed on brand new MacBook Pro. How can I get these missing plugins? Indd. files will not open

    Please Help!
Adobe Chat doesnt deal with old products
Apple Genius Bar says to talk to Adobe.
HAD a 2008 MacBook Pro with Adobe CS4 installed
now have a brand new MacBook Pro (and used my time machine to back up from my old mac) and when trying to open InDesign files - gives a list of plugins that are missing and will not open the document.
I'm a graphic designer- so this is not an option..
    Please Help!

You can install Adobe Programs ONLY from the originals installer which is provided from Adobe. Time Machine (which is a form of migration) will not result in working Adobe programs. As Bob said, use the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool, which is also working for CS versions, to wipe out everything from Adobe and start with a clean installing.
I am not sure, if CS4 is running on Maverick, at least it is not supported officially, your are here alone. It might be so that you have to upgrade your software to a later version.

  • Why did my brand new macbook pro come with Snow Leopard instead of Lion?

I JUST bought a brand new Macbook Pro assuming that it would come with Lion, but it didn't. My brother who just bought an Air the day before me got Lion with his computer. Shouldn't new computers come with new software? I'm confused. Can anyone help me?

You qualify for a free upgrade if purchased on or after June 6th.  Follow these instructions to download your free upgrade.

  • Leopard Install on Brand New MacBook Pro?

Hey guy's, I got my first Mac today. A lovely brand new Macbook Pro. I got a copy of Leopard in the box and have run an upgrade.
Was this right? As the computer is new with nothing on it and I have nothing to import of another Mac onto it should I just do a complete erase and install?
    What's the best option?

wow thanks for the very fast reply! I'll stick with it then and see how it goes. I love the thing though. It's very sexy!! Bit peed that they bumped the 7200rpm drive up to 200GB today but never mind, not fussed by the CPU as it'll only use the battery more and this thing is fast enough!
Will the upgrade convert all the OS into the full 64bit?
