Clean install of server now it's in a reboot loop
Been running fine for a few days restarted the server and now we get grey screen with spinning thing, it never reaches the blue screen and just restarts. Then goes around in this loop forever.
fsck is fine.
Any ideas?
I am having the same issue. I also did a Disk Utility on booted sever disc and it performed the same outcome with the ACL issues. I have even done a restore from time machine from last known good boot. Still have the same issue.
When booted into single mode it states things that seem irregular like:
"Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement" has immediate dependencies on both com.apple.kernel and com.apple.kpi components; use only one style."
"Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleACPIPlatform" has immediate dependencies on both com.apple.kernel and com.apple.kpi components; use only one style."
This next part only shows when i do a verbose boot (command-v).
Extension "com.apple.iokit.IOBluetoothFamily"" has immediate dependencies on both com.apple.kernel and com.apple.kpi components; use only one style."
it states it three times before it continues to go to the shell. once i type exit to launch the os. it then states:
"IPv6 packet filtering initialized, default to accept , logging disabled"
Then right before it restarts it display three lines of text but it goes to so fast that i can't read it.
only think i can make out is the next line that says:
"syncing disks..... Killing all proccesses"
"continuing..."
Then the computer restarts and the loop begins.
If anybody can help that would be great because i have everything setup to perfection with the server, would hate start all over again.

Clean Install of SL, now would like to resume Time Machine Backups
I recently did a clean install of Snow Leopard in an effort to solve some problems I was having with Aperture. Now that I have the clean install up and running, and have reinstalled most if not all of my apps that I need, I would like to resume using Time Machine to back up my system. My old backups are on Time Machine in the backups.backupdb folder. I dont think I want to delete those, as I'm still finding from day to day there's info back there that I would like to copy over. Is there any way to have Time Machine just resume backups using that same folder?
I'm also not able to move that backups.backupdb folder to a new subfolder (I am being told ownership is not enabled, and even when i click the get info button and the little lock at the bottom of the pane I do not see an option for ignoring ownership) and I am concerned if I start a new Time Machine backup of my current system it will replace the current folder. If anyone has any expertise in this area and can help I would greatly appreciate it.Abbstrack wrote:

NEVER move or do ANYTHING with TM backups by hand from finder. TM will not delete your old backups when you start an entirely new backup sequence. set up TM on the new install. on the first backup it should offer you to continue the existing backup sequence. if you choose that option then it will continue the old backups. but it will make a full system backup on the first run and if it runs out of space it will start deleting old backups. -
Clean install of Mavericks, now cannot access Time Machine backups
I just performed a clean install of Mavericks (10.9.1), but now I cannot access my previous backups under Mountain Lion (10.8.5). The new installation recognizes the TM disk just fine, and I can enter TM, but all of my old backups are blacked out. In Finder, I can easily explore the TM disk and see that all of my old backups are intact there. I've got a few large folders (100+ GB) I'd like to restore, but I can't seem to figure out how to get them back correctly. What am I missing?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer...Things just got worse. After manually copying over some files via Finder, and then performing a full backup of the new system, even the NEW backup is blacked out; e.g., NO backups, past or present, are accessible from within Time Machine.

Clean install OSX and now problems! Please help
G4 tower 933
We did a clean install of the original OSX 10.1.3 cd to wipe clean the hard drive.
However, now the CD eject button now doesn't work. F12 will eject the CD but the 'eject' button in the upper right of the keyboard no longer works.
How can we get it to operate again?
it is the apple extended keyboard, all worked fine prior to clean install and all original Apple equipment.
We used the "Power Mac G4 Mac OSX Install" CD that came w/ the computer.
There are a bunch of other cds (5 'software restore' cds, OS9 cd) we did not use
Apple hardware test CD was run and all is normal
tried to run the OSX install CD again but only comes up with a blank white screen
thanks for your help!10.1.3 is obsolete junk. No one wants to spend their time and energy helping you fix it.
Install 10.2 or later and lots of folks would be willing to help. -
Clean install fails - what now?
have tried (3 or more times) to do a "clean install" (OS 10.3.9, on a Power PC G3 iMac), and it keeps failing. Errror message:

SO: WHAT DO I DO NOW? Options? ( besides buying a newer computer)Jerry:
have tried (3 or more times) to do a "clean install" (OS 10.3.9, on a Power PC G3 iMac), and it keeps failing. Errror message:
What do you mean by a clean install? Did you completely erase and reformat the HDD and then attempted to install? If not, what exactly did you do?
Verify/Repair failed with error -9972 (The underlying task reported failure on exit)
This is a directory error which you will get only when you attempt to Repair or Verify disk in Disk Utility. It is not an installation error. The error you get is telling you that the directory is badly messed up. Error -9972 is a serious directory corruption error which may be hardware or software based. As a result Disk Warrior may or may not be able to repair your HDD. In some cases it is the result of a failing or failed internal HDD. See Disk Utility reports "Underlying task reported failure" when repairing a volume.
Rather than put out money to purchase Disk Warrior, which may or may not work for you, first be sure that you have your data backed up. Then reformat and erase the HDD as per directions below:
Warning! This procedure will destroy all data on your Hard Disk Drive. Be sure you have an up-to-date, tested backup of at least your Users folder and any third party applications you do not want to re-install before attempting this procedure.
• With computer shut down insert install disk in optical drive.
• Hit Power button and immediately after chime hold down the "C" key.
• Select language
• Go to the Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
• Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
• Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
• Select number of partitions in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note 1: One partition is normally preferable for an internal HDD.)
• Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
• Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
• Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
• Select Erase tab
• Select the sub-volume (indented) under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
• Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
• Click Erase button
• Quit Disk Utility.
If you are able to get this far, you may now launch the Installer and proceed with the installation. If you would like step by step directions, please post back and ask.

Totally Clean Install of System, now how do I import my movies?
Hi guys,
I have totally installed a brand new leopard and all apps etc on a brand new HD. I have copied over about 300GB of Imovie 08 content (events, clips, projects) from my old user/movies folder to the new HD'd user/movies folder.
Is this the right way to go?
I have both HD in the machine, old and new, and when everything is transfered I aim to wipe the original HD and use it for TimeMachine.
I guess I am asking if I should have imported the old material via imovie or is moving the movies folder sufficient?
Thanks.I looked up smiliar questions on the groups here. I managed to retrieve most of my data from my old Lion upgrade from Time Machine. The one thing I can't retrieve is keychain.login from Time Machine which as I understand has all my passwords. I used the Option key to find the user directory, but I can't find it through Time Machine. If worse comes to worse I still have my old Lion back up and I can restore that. I like this cleaner install because as I stated above it's quicker.

System: Dell PowerEdge sc1420 with dual xeon and Adaptec 2420SA SATA RAID (supported by OS); 10 GB memory (2x4, rank 2, organization x4, in DIMM1 & DIMM2; 2x1, registered, organization x8, in DIMM3 & DIMM4)
This computer is currently running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise which was installed with no problems.
Objective: clean install of Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard on an otherwise unused RAID array disk set.
All attempts to boot from DVD result in loading of files (grey progress bar on bottom of screen), brief dark screen, then black screen with a blue windows logo for about 2 seconds and then a flash of about 10 lines of error notifications on a black screen
for about 1/4 second (unreadable), and then a reboot of the computer.
Coreinfo.exe confirms that cpus DO support NX and PAE; do NOT support VMX (virtual machine enhancements).
Attempts to run memtest.exe from boot disk tool-menu startup result in an error message that the memtest.exe file is corrupt.
Running memtest.exe from Windows 2008 R2 install disk results in all memory tests passed!
Attempted booting with multiple DVD's (some +R, some -R, all verified) burned from .iso. These DVD's were used successfully to install Windows Server 2012 R2 on an HP Pavilion. Also changed DVD drives just to rule out DVD hardware.
Running CHKDSK from Windows 2012 R2 on HP Pavilion shows no problems; running CHKDSK from Windows 2008 R2 on the Dell system on the same disks shows some problems. Running checkdisk on the Windows 2008 R2 install disk from the Windows 2008 R2 installed
system shows no problems. All disks burned and verified on same system.
Also attempted to boot from USB thumbdrive with copy of DVD on it. Same results: system loads files then reboots at first Windows logo. So that would rule out disk quality issues per se??
Started to try an upgrade rather clean install to see if any errors were announced. None were announced as the system went through much of the process. I aborted somewhere along the way before committing to the upgrade because 1) the most likely
outcome was it would not boot after install (I don't really need the practice in restoring); and 2) even if it did reboot, having a system that can't be repaired by booting the install disk is pointless.
All disks and raid arrays are recognized and usable by RAID controller card and by Windows Server 2008 R2. Disks are within spec for use with Adaptec 2420SA (1TB @ 300).
Is VMX (aka VT-x) actaully required for ANY install even though Hyper-V is not intended to be used? If so, it is too bad that the Microsoft system requirements (
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn303418.aspx ) don't make that clear. And lack of VMX support really doesn't explain the memtest.exe "corruption" issue.
Or is it maybe something unique about the files on 2012 R2 disk (or disk image on USB) that are causing some problem with the chipset processing? But why?
My vote would be for the latter of the issues, but I have no clue why or if it is remediable. Suggestions? So here is what I think is the final understanding of this problem:
First, one additional piece of important information: The computer successfully moves into and through the Windows Boot Loader phase and succeeding phase ONLY for Windows 8.1 32-bit, but NOT for Windows 8.1 64-bit nor for Windows
Server 2012 R2 (only 64-bit).
The Windows Boot Manager phase (which precedes the Windows Boot Loader phase) is either 32-bit or 64-bit (64 –bit for this case) and is loaded by the 16-bit stub program (Bootmgr) which starts in real mode.
Windows Boot Loader of course runs in either 32-bit or 64-bit (64 –bit for this case) according to the product being installed.
By inference, the essential problem is occurring in conjunction with the loading of a WIM file to start the Windows Boot Manager.
The boot manager starts ok and generally shows its essential screens (Windows Boot Manager; Advanced Boot Options) or proceeds to load files for transition into Windows startup in the succeeding Windows Boot Loader phase (that doesn’t “boot” but rather
loads the system). This is best confirmed by the announced corruption of the memtest.exe file when selecting Windows Memory Diagnostic from the Windows Boot Manager Screen.
If allowed to continue loading files to pass control to the Windows Boot Manager, the type of abort and resulting immediate restart that occurs is that which you would associate with unhandled cpu exceptions (invalid instruction, memory out of range,
wild interrupt, etc.) that most of us have not commonly seen for 20 years (since beginning to use well behave OS’s from Windows NT 3.1 and on).
So, the problem obviously is due to a failure to properly mount the WIM file and/or properly access it (probably the latter) when running in 64-bit protected mode.
This is independent of the hardware on which the install disk is actually mounted (DVD or USB-flash), so it is NOT a hardware problem
per se.
Since the WIM is mounted early in the process, Boot Manager may well have loaded it using BIOS routines to access the physical device on which it resides rather than loading 32-bit or 64-bit drivers of its own.
Hence, if the BIOS does not “mount” the WIM in a way that is later fully compatible with access from the 64-bit systems being loaded, it could cause apparent file corruption.
If it is only partially incompatible some functionality may appear quite usable (like loading files) until later detected.
This is vague on my part, because the exact nature of the incompatibility cannot be readily determined from the information available.
But the consequence is the same: the system cannot boot from the install disk, either for initial installation or repairs.
Incidental conclusion: The 64-bit boot manager code for Windows Server 2008 does not exhibit this faulty behavior, but the 64-bit code for Windows Server 2012 does.
So the problem is not inherent with loading 64-bit server OS’s.
Expectations: If the system were to be upgraded using the features of the install disk while running an installed OS, say Windows Server 2008 R2, it might well succeed and yield a fully functional system upgraded to Windows Server 2012
R2 (because the installed operating system is started from discrete files, not from a WIM file).
However, in order to perform a disaster recovery using Windows resources (such as image backups from Windows Server Backup), one would have to presumably boot from a Windows Server 2012 64-bit install disk or Windows Server USB recovery drive.
Of course we know that the Windows Server install disk will not boot and we can be fairly sure that the problem will migrate to any Windows Server USB recovery drive that is created.
My inspection of a Windows 7 System Repair CD shows that is based exclusively on boot.wim, not discrete files!
Of course a generated image for a WIM for Windows 2012 USB recovery drive
might not have the flaw that drives this behavior, but it probably would.
Problem conclusion: A BIOS upgrade would be required for compatibility with Windows Server 2014 clean installation
and any maintenance; and none is available from the OEM.
Problem not resolved, but understood for future reference.
Thanks to Tim whose comments helped me focus my thinking. -

SQL Server 2012 DB Engine does not start (clean install with server 2012 and 2008 R2)
I'm trying to do clean installation of SQL server 2012 on Server 2012 (which is runnning as a VM on ESX server) and getting this "wait on the DB engine recovery failed" message. Initially, I though this issue was related to some permission issues
but changing the permission or service accounts didn't help. I'm not seeing any "denied" messages in the log files either. Even with Server 2008 R2 (clean built VM), the installation gives the exactly the same error messages.
My setup is purely for test purpose; so, the security is not a concern. Can someone help or give me a clue where to look?

As you are telling this is a test installation process...
In the logs i m seeing the error message "An error occurred while processing the log for database 'model'. If possible, restore from backup. If a backup is not available, it might be necessary to rebuild the log.".
1) If the SQL Services was installed successfully and SQL Service was not able to start because of model database issue...
1.1) If you have model database SQL back file, start the SQL Server in single user mode with minimum configuration and try to restore MODEL database
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqlserverfaq/archive/2011/05/11/inf-hey-my-sql-server-service-is-not-starting-what-do-i-do.aspx
1.2) If you don't have backups., try to rebuild the system databases but make sure that you are not losing any data critical data on master and SQL Jobs on MSDB
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd207003%28v=sql.110%29.aspx#RebuildProcedure
2) As if this is a new installation try to repair the instance with the help of setup media file
3) If the repair option fails., the last option wipe out the complete SQL Server components from Services.msc and Registries and start new installation.
4) Make sure when you are doing un-installation all the required SQL Server components on services.msc should be in stop state.
Hope this helps and let me know any questions...
Thanks,

Cannot log in after clean install of Server 10.5.5
Excuse my lack of organization in this post, but i am a bit fried right now from trying to figure this out.
After installing OS X Server 10.5.5 via firewire (from mac mini) to the stock ATA HD in an upgraded G4, I cannot log into the system admin account that was created during the initial setup. I know im typing it exactly correct (what i entered in setup). The setup runs flawlessly and will log into the account after setup is complete, but after a reboot (to get the G4 out of Target disc mode), no dice.
I have even created another admin account (non system admin) during the time i had the option in setup and cannot log into that either. Setting it to auto log in isn't working either, yet other changes i make (such as showing restart and shutdown buttons) are effective after reboot
The only explaination that i can come up with is the way i am rebooting the system after setup is complete (rebooting via power button as shutting down from the apple applet will not shut down the machine in TDM) Obviously, this isn't a best practice, but will it screw up the login creds every time? I have reinstalled the OS 3 times and get the same result.
If it is the way im rebooting the box, does anyone have a better suggestion of getting it out of TDM after the install and setup?Download and run Pacifist on the system install disks that came with the computer to look for iPhoto. If you find it Pacifist can extract and install iPhoto.
Also if iPhoto came with the computer originally then look for the file shown in this screenshot and use it to install iPhoto:

I recently wiped the system and using internet recovery I did a clean lion server re install ... after configuring user accounts and the server app correctly by the book, I am unable to login on any computer that is joined to the OD server. I set a share point afp://server.ex.ex/Users in workgroup manager as its home directory. When I go to login it tells me it cannot because an error has occured. Yes I have configured all units to allow all network accounts to login on the client end.
In addition I have all the services activated on the server .app pane .... none of them except only wiki server are able to authenticate successfully against the server.
It is running through a WRT54G cisco router with the DMZ zone set to its DHCP IP.
DNS is correct and the account is a dyndns domain name resolving to the router.
What is happening here?
Any ideas....By the way I also should add that I deleted the old hostname and created a new one but DNS seems good as it points to the server when entered through locally and globally.

Clean installed 10.4 now Flashing ? mark on G4 867 QS
I bought retail 10.4 then erased and installed 10.4 on the original 60GB drive after moving my stuff to a new 80GB internal drive with 10.1.5 on it. BOTH Drives show on desktop now. System Preferences, Startup disk gives option to select OS X 10.4 and 10.1.5 on respective drives. Selecting 10.4 and restarting computer just restarts back in 10.1.5. Removing Drive with 10.1.5 results in flashing ?. Reinstalling 10.4 again and again results in no change. I swapped master and slave settings on the drives and repeated about procedures with no change.
Hi G4SE, Welcome to Apple's Users Help Users Forums.
If Everett's advice is a bit intimidating, maybe this will work.
Download the 10.4.5 Combo Updater even if its to the 10.1.5 partition. It will let you install it into the other partition I believe.
The Combo hopefully will cure the 10.4 systems hiccups.
Standard UD rules:
Open Disk Util on the 10.4 CD and repair 10.4 while running in 10.1.5
Repair Permissions fore and aft.
If you have 10.4 OK versions of Disk Warrior or Tech Tool Pro, use them on the 10.4 Partition.
Disconnect FW and USB Goodies.
Pray to Mac God while in Yoga Position and Arms locked behind head. :~)
Good Luck, JP -
