Clean install of Snow Leopard, DVD drive doesn't work
I purchased a Snow Leopard Family Pack from Apple, and would like to do a clean install on my MacBook. Unfortunately my DVD doesn't work and I can't load it from the disc. Is there a way to download it from the Apple site? I'd really rather not buy a new drive.
The base Snow Leopard system is not available via web download. Once you install it from DVD, you can download updates to the latest 10.6.8.
Can you hook up your MacBook in target disk mode to another mac system and install it from there? Target disk mode requires a firewire connection between both systems.

After installing Quicktime CD-ROM/DVD drive doesn't work.
We use Quicktime to view files created by agencies. After installing Quicktime 7.1 the CD-ROM/DVD drive on the IBM thinkpad no longer works.

The only way to resolve this issue is to edit the registry and remove the Upper and Lower filters.
Why does this happen? Can you please let me know if this will be amended soon, and is there a way of installing the software to stop this from happening?
IBM Thinkpad Windows 2000Last night I had the same problem. Tried to upgrade and got the version with Itunes to see what it was. After reboot, Both physical drives and a vertual drive now have the yellow mark. This program should not have touched device drivers. Uninstalled both quicktime and Itunes and rebooted. Same thing. Reinstalled Quicktime. Same thing. Ran reg mechanic. it said 2 dlls where missing:
PxSFS.DLL
pxwma.dll
These don't seem to be device drivers, so should not have had an effect, but I replaced them which made reg mechanic happy. Problem is still there.
In Event viewer for application I now have this error at each reboot:

For System Event I have this at each reboot because the cdroms are disabled:

Looking through this thread it looks like just other users replying. Where is Apple? they created this mess. -
Help Please! Trying to do a clean install of Snow Leopard on a new drive
I'm trying to help a family member with his Mac Mini.
He installed a new HD and we're trying to do a clean install of Snow Leopard from the DVD. I've tried booting to the DVD by holding the C key during boot up and that does nothing. I've tried mounting his HD on my Macbook and installing that way and that doesn't work either.

I couldn't find anything about installing on another drive. I did find this old [MacFixIt article|http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10329087-263.html] that you might find useful if you've got an external drive. Essentially, you partition it (not necessary for what you want), make an image of the Installer and then restore the image to the external drive. You can then use that drive as the boot drive. That was for Leopard, so I don't know if it will work. -
Had to wipe my drive so I could do a clean install of snow leopard. Now I have look every where on how to move bookmarks, address book and I cal settings. I have them back up on a external drive with Time machine but can not move, copy or restore my old settings. The instructions I have found or no help or needs more clarafication on what to do.

After clean install of Snow Leopard, Time Machine did not restore all files. When I try to restore these files I get "Not enough disk space" error. What do I need to do to get these important files back onto my Mac from my external hard drive??

For what the Apple Store's charge you can buy almost buy a new computer.
Just for giggles I brought my old laptop in for a drive upgrade and asked, they wanted $600 for a drive that only cost $120 at the time and it was a slow 5,400 RPM drive. The new Mac's of a similar make were going for $1000.
I did the drive replacement myself, got a faster drive of better quality for $300 instead.
Then another time I asked for a RAM upgrade from 4GB to 8GB, they wanted to charge $400 + $35 for the labor.
The same RAM is on Crucial.com for $90 and all I need is a 00 micro phillips screwdriver.
So you see what's going on here.
I think what you should do, if your out of warranty/AppleCare, is to call up the local PC tech guy who also does Mac's and have them fix you right up.
They can offer more personalized care which you need. Clone your old drive to the new and everything.
With Apple they are overworked at the Genius Bar and just place roadblocks so you buy a new machine instead.
For instance, all new iMac's now have proprietary drive software installed on the hard drives for heat monitoring. So now the only choice a user has is to bring their iMac into a Apple Store for a very expensive drive upgrade, which a person then decides the money is better spent buying a new machine. -
Clean Install of Snow Leopard and Multiple Drives

I want to do a clean install of Snow Leopard because of various issues carried over from previous upgrades and the like. I have the original 250 GB ATA drive and a 1 TB ATA drive installed, plus a couple of other external drives available via USB and Firewire. I was wondering if there would be a recommended configuration of the install of the OS utilizing the multiple drives? i.e. using the 250 GB drive exclusively for the OS and the 1 TB drive for Applications, music files, photos, games, etc. would I have to make any specific changes to the location of any of the folders and would this create any problems when doing so? What kind of issues? There are very few that warrant a clean install to eliminate & some that will just recur until you find & eliminate their real cause.

The only ones I recommend are those that dedicate a drive other than your normal startup one for backups. To be clear, I mean that the originals & the backups should be on entirely different drives, not just on different partitions of the same drive.

Yes, you are probably over thinking this.
There are some advantages to using a different drive for user files & possibly even for the entire user home folder, but there are also possible problems for any configuration different from the standard one with the OS, apps, & all user folders on the same startup drive. As already suggested, you can move large users folders for some apps like iTunes libraries to a different drive (or even split the media content among different drives) but unless you have a compelling reason to do so, it is much simpler to leave everything in the default configuration. -

To install Windows into BootCamp, you read and run the BootCamp Assistant located in the Applications > Utiltiies folder
It's important to change the drive format from FAT32 to NTFS before installing Windows using the Windows disk.
Windows is rather complicated to install, if you boot to a blinking line with "press any key to continue" you need to press and hold the power button down and reboot holding the Option/Alt key down to get back into OS X.

IMO, not if your system is working ok. doing an erase and install will buy you a lot of work migrating your data.

yes. boot from the snow leopard dvd, reformat your drive with disk utility (it's in the Utilities menu). set the partition scheme to GUID and format to MAC OS extended journaled. once the drive is reformatted, quit disk utility and proceed with the install.

I would recommend doing a regular install. just make sure you have a *full backup* before you do. a bootable backup using CCCloner or Superduper is teh best. a TM backup is ok too.

I bought my Macbook pro in 2009 and am currently running the Leopard software. I want to do a clean install of Snow Leopard, but I do not want to lose my iLife applications. I lost the DVD's that came with the computer. Is there any way I can do a clean install of Snow Leopard with out losing my iLife applications?
Will a regular installation of Snow Leopard allow the App store to recognize that my computer has iLife and mark it as a purchased item in my account. If it can, then would I be able to do a clean install and re-download the apps for free.
Any help would be appreciated!1. Install Snow Leopard normally; this will keep the applications intact. An actual clean installation involves either erasing the partition or creating a blank one, and neither of those will carry the applications over.
2. The previous iLife installation won't carry over to the Mac App Store, and the Mac App Store versions are incompatible with Snow Leopard.

I did a clean install of Snow Leopard and now when I reloaded iWork 09 from my timemachine it will not open anything. any ideas.
iWork '09 is still available from the likes of Amazon.
Your experience is why I never trusted downloaded versions when there's a physical DVD available.
It may be possible to reactivate with your code, but I can't advise you as to how. -

I would like to do a clean install of Snow Leopard (as I am having problems after doing the upgrade). I know how to do the install, but am confused as to how to transfer back my itunes library and iCal calendars after the install from time machine. Can someone give me easy instructions please?

that's up to you to decide. most people want to keep a lot more than you've indicated.
Things like pictures, movies, documents, mail, bookmarks, passwords, applications. that's why I normally recommend backing up the whole drive.

I have a MacBook Pro bought in dec 2009. Currently has mountain lion osx installed. Worked like a dream until today. Randomly froze, so I restarted it. To find I got a grey screen. It wouldn't start. Also note my DVD drive doesn't work, but mountain lion was installed via App Store anyway.
So here's what I done so far:
tried resetting PRAM - No success
Done disk utility. Disk verified with no errors. I even re formatted disk. - no success starting.
Tried re installing mountain lion via download . It froze halfway installing -no success.
Tried backing up a time machine backup from my USB hard drive. It froze at 1% - no success
Tried booting from safe mode - no success
Tried the command line boot - no success.
Please someone help!Sounds like the hard dre has left the building, Died, in the Sh*tter, Gone to the hard drive resting place in the sky.
Buy a new drive connect it to the system with a SATA to USB adapter and see if you can install Mt Lion on that drive connected externally. If you can then the drive inside your system has failed.
Oh Wait!!!! You have the 2009 model. They are known for bad drive to logic board cables. So it may not be the drive itself but the cable going from the drive to the logic board. Do the same as above then if the system runs OK with the new drive connected externally install it in the system and see if it boots. If it does you are good to go. If it doesn't then it is more then likely the cable that hs failed.
I would suggest you also SAVE a copy of that download of Mt Lion and create a USB install drive from it using Lion Disk Maker, once you get your system up and running. -
Lost widgets after clean install of Snow Leopard
Does anyone know how I can restore my widgets (& the info on them, mostly sticky notes)? I did a clean install of Snow Leopard and I was able to pretty much restore everything manually from TIme Machine. I did go into "Users/Library/Widgets" and restore that, but it seems not to have worked, all I get are the 4 default widgtets.
Any ideas? Other than that the install went well.

I had about 10-12 sticky notes with semi-important info on them and it would be nice, but not critical, to have them back. I should have done a screen shot and saved that! I'm wondering if I must first create new, blank stickies first ... which would then take the info?? Seems odd, but who knows.
If you have another idea, that would be great.

Installing iPhoto on a clean install of Snow Leopard
I bought a new Mac and gave my dad my old Macbook Pro (15 inch Core 2 Duo, 2006). I was running Snow Leopard on the laptop but I wanted to clean it off before giving it to him. So, I inserted the Snow Leopard disc, restarted the computer, held down C, and ran disk utility and erased it. Then I did a clean install of Snow Leopard. I didn't realize that SL did not contain iLife (I know, silly me). I would rather not reinstall Tiger, Leopard, and then Snow Leopard all over again, so is there any way to get iLife on the laptop?
So far, I have inserted the 2nd disc of Leopard and clicked on Install Bundled Software, but kept getting Alert: This software cannot be installed on this computer. And Insterting either of the Tiger discs does not work either.Yes, older software will most of the time not load. Especially from a previous OSX. If I remember correctly I had to by iLife when I upgraded, I do have the disks, and I beleive I bought them after I installed SL. (SL did not come iLife)
They do offer iPhoto on the APP store, but that is V 9.51 which won't run on SL, the most 10.6.8 iPhoto is 9.2.3
The new iLife'11 has too new versions, that's why I said to buy the OLD version of '11
I have all those discs as well, I would not have bought "11 if I could have loaded off one of those discs.
Maybe someone knows a trick to make those old applcations load, and I would be most interested in finding how they did it.
