Clean install of Snow Leopard fails

Dear all,
As the title says my current issue is that I'm unable to perform a new installation of Snow Leopard after performing a single-pass secure erase of the Mac partition of my hard drive. However, some background to the problem is probably useful.
My troubles begin after attempting to transfer files from an USB stick to my Macbook pro. Drag/drop or copy/paste in finder resulted in nothing happening. I ejected the USB drive (which flashed to let me know the drive itself thought it had been ejected) however the USB stick did not disappear from Finder. Further attempts to eject the stick using finder did nothing. Attempting to reset Finder produced the well known "The application Finder.app can't be opened. -10810" error (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2135129&tstart=45). After reading through that thread and trying some of the suggestions I eventualy had to resort to a hard reset of my macbook. After restarting the macbook ran very slowly for a couple of minutes before producing the same Finder error as before (though no external drives/devices were involved this time).
After coming up against the same problem again and again I decided to verify and repair the drive using the OS X installation cd that came with my macbook pro. The hard disk itself seemed ok (S.M.A.R.T: verified), which I expected as I have Windows 7 running under bootcamp on a separate partition. (As a quick aside, Windows 7 was and still is running fine, and in fact I could successfully access and open all the files on my Mac partition from within windows. This allowed me to grad up-to-date copies of all my important files before taking more drastic action.) Verifying the mac partition resulted in a message saying the disk needed repairing. Attempting to repair the disk initially resulted in errors saying a clean install was required, though the repair succeeded on my 4th attempt. This repair failed to fix the problem and I was still getting the very slow running leading quickly to the same Finder error.
Eventually i decided my only option was to perform an erase and install of Snow Leopard. Initially I simply erased the partition using Disk Utility after booting from the install disk (default option) and then attempted to install Snow Leopard. The install failed repeatedly, alternating between 'An error has occured in the installation process' and 'Unable to install supprting files' error messages. I also tried repairing the disk after erasing and then installing with the same errors. I then performed a single-pass secure erase on the Mac partition (again from Disk Utility via the startup disk), verified the drive (finding an unassigned node error), successfully repaired the drive (twice, just to make sure) and attempted another installation, which again failed with the 'An error has occured in the installation process' error.
So I currently have a formatted Mac partition which refuses to accept a new Snow Leopard install and a fully working copy of Windows 7 running under bootcamp on a separate partition of the same disk. Is there anything else I can try other than reformating the entire hard drive and losing my bootcamp installation?

try this idea: Do a leopard install to an external disk then do a Disk Utility "restore" function to that clean partition. So you restore from the external to the internal partition. Should leave Bootcamp untouched.

    1. Install Snow Leopard normally; this will keep the applications intact. An actual clean installation involves either erasing the partition or creating a blank one, and neither of those will carry the applications over.
    2. The previous iLife installation won't carry over to the Mac App Store, and the Mac App Store versions are incompatible with Snow Leopard.

  • Help Please! Trying to do a clean install of Snow Leopard on a new drive

    I'm trying to help a family member with his Mac Mini.
    He installed a new HD and we're trying to do a clean install of Snow Leopard from the DVD. I've tried booting to the DVD by holding the C key during boot up and that does nothing. I've tried mounting his HD on my Macbook and installing that way and that doesn't work either.
    How do I install this if you don't have an OS on you drive to boot up to?

  • I am trying to do a clean install of Snow Leopard on an Intel Macbook Pro. (Need to partition for Boot Camp)  I have done it in the past so I know it works but whenever I select the install disk as the boot device it gets stuck on the Apple logo/pinwheel.

    Windows is rather complicated to install, if you boot to a blinking line with "press any key to continue" you need to press and hold the power button down and reboot holding the Option/Alt key down to get back into OS X.

    I think what you should do, if your out of warranty/AppleCare, is to call up the local PC tech guy who also does Mac's and have them fix you right up.
    They can offer more personalized care which you need. Clone your old drive to the new and everything.
    With Apple they are overworked at the Genius Bar and just place roadblocks so you buy a new machine instead.
    For instance, all new iMac's now have proprietary drive software installed on the hard drives for heat monitoring. So now the only choice a user has is to bring their iMac into a Apple Store for a very expensive drive upgrade, which a person then decides the money is better spent buying a new machine.

  • Lost widgets after clean install of Snow Leopard

    Does anyone know how I can restore my widgets (& the info on them, mostly sticky notes)? I did a clean install of Snow Leopard and I was able to pretty much restore everything manually from TIme Machine. I did go into "Users/Library/Widgets" and restore that, but it seems not to have worked, all I get are the 4 default widgtets.
    Any ideas? Other than that the install went well.

    Weird ... still no widgets, even after restoring those files ... sorry ...
    I had about 10-12 sticky notes with semi-important info on them and it would be nice, but not critical, to have them back. I should have done a screen shot and saved that! I'm wondering if I must first create new, blank stickies first ... which would then take the info?? Seems odd, but who knows.
    If you have another idea, that would be great.

  • Installing iPhoto on a clean install of Snow Leopard

    I bought a new Mac and gave my dad my old Macbook Pro (15 inch Core 2 Duo, 2006). I was running Snow Leopard on the laptop but I wanted to clean it off before giving it to him. So, I inserted the Snow Leopard disc, restarted the computer, held down C, and ran disk utility and erased it. Then I did a clean install of Snow Leopard. I didn't realize that SL did not contain iLife (I know, silly me). I would rather not reinstall Tiger, Leopard, and then Snow Leopard all over again, so is there any way to get iLife on the laptop?
    So far, I have inserted the 2nd disc of Leopard and clicked on Install Bundled Software, but kept getting Alert: This software cannot be installed on this computer. And Insterting either of the Tiger discs does not work either.

    Yes, older software will most of the time not load. Especially from a previous OSX. If I remember correctly I had to by iLife when I upgraded, I do have the disks, and I beleive I bought them after I installed SL. (SL did not come iLife)
    They do offer iPhoto on the APP store, but that is V 9.51 which won't run on SL, the most 10.6.8 iPhoto is 9.2.3
    The new iLife'11 has too new versions, that's why I said to buy the OLD version of '11
    I have all those discs as well, I would not have bought "11 if I could have loaded off one of those discs.
    Maybe someone knows a trick to make those old applcations load, and I would be most interested in finding how they did it.

    IMO, not if your system is working ok. doing an erase and install will buy you a lot of work migrating your data.

    yes. boot from the snow leopard dvd, reformat your drive with disk utility (it's in the Utilities menu). set the partition scheme to GUID and format to MAC OS extended journaled. once the drive is reformatted, quit disk utility and proceed with the install.

    I don't understand, is it empty or does it have something on it already? all that stuff will be wiped out if you follow the above procedure.

    I would recommend doing a regular install. just make sure you have a *full backup* before you do. a bootable backup using CCCloner or Superduper is teh best. a TM backup is ok too.
    BTW, you have posted this in the Time machine forum for leopard. this is really not the right place to ask this.

    iWork '09 is still available from the likes of Amazon.
    Your experience is why I never trusted downloaded versions when there's a physical DVD available.
    It may be possible to reactivate with your code, but I can't advise you as to how.

    I would like to do a clean install of Snow Leopard (as I am having problems after doing the upgrade). I know how to do the install, but am confused as to how to transfer back my itunes library and iCal calendars after the install from time machine. Can someone give me easy instructions please?

    that's up to you to decide. most people want to keep a lot more than you've indicated.
    Things like pictures, movies, documents, mail, bookmarks, passwords, applications. that's why I normally recommend backing up the whole drive.

    I want to do a clean install of Snow Leopard because of various issues carried over from previous upgrades and the like. I have the original 250 GB ATA drive and a 1 TB ATA drive installed, plus a couple of other external drives available via USB and Firewire. I was wondering if there would be a recommended configuration of the install of the OS utilizing the multiple drives? i.e. using the 250 GB drive exclusively for the OS and the 1 TB drive for Applications, music files, photos, games, etc. would I have to make any specific changes to the location of any of the folders and would this create any problems when doing so? Am I over thinking this? I am a little confused as to how to approach this. Please help any advice will be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

    What kind of issues? There are very few that warrant a clean install to eliminate & some that will just recur until you find & eliminate their real cause.

    The only ones I recommend are those that dedicate a drive other than your normal startup one for backups. To be clear, I mean that the originals & the backups should be on entirely different drives, not just on different partitions of the same drive.

    Yes, you are probably over thinking this.
    There are some advantages to using a different drive for user files & possibly even for the entire user home folder, but there are also possible problems for any configuration different from the standard one with the OS, apps, & all user folders on the same startup drive. As already suggested, you can move large users folders for some apps like iTunes libraries to a different drive (or even split the media content among different drives) but unless you have a compelling reason to do so, it is much simpler to leave everything in the default configuration.

    I've just finished a clean installation of Snow Leopard on My MacBook Pro. I've got a cd, called "Applications Install Disc", from which i was supposed to install Iphoto etc. But when i start installing, it says "Installation Failed". It says that an unknown failure has occured. Now i can't install these programs, and it's pretty sad.
    Anyone who can help?

    Clean and polish the bottom of the disk with a bit of rubbing alcohol on a very soft clean cloth and try again.
    If that doesn't work, use Pacifist to extract the iLife programs

  • XCODE 3.2 INSTALL ON SNOW LEOPARD FAILED.

    I have just upgraded my Mac Pro 8-Core computer with the new Apple RAID card. I have two 1 TB hard drives created in a mirror RAID 1 with two 500 GB volumes.
    Snow Leopard installed just fine on the new RAID set. I have green lights on all raid components as shown by the RAID Utility.
    I tried to install XCODE 3.2 off the Snow Leopard install DVD (five pack version) and it acts like it is installing the package until you are down to the final 1 minute of the install and then comes up with a window stating "The Installation Failed". I don't know what the issue is.
    I then decided to download XCODE version 3.1.4 off the Apple website, and that package installed successfully without any problems. I then decided to go back to the install DVD and install the "other optional software packages" and of the packages that I installed they installed just fine.
    Is there some work around to the XCODE 3.2 install?

    I FIXED IT.....
    ALL WORKS FINE NOW.
    WHAT I HAD TO DO.
    1) INSTALL THE OLD OPERATING SYSTEM (INSTALL DISCS THAT CAME WITH THE COMPUTER) ON TO MY NEWLY CREATED RAID DRIVES.
    2) PATCH THE OPERATING SYSTEM UP TO CURRENT PATCH LEVELS.
    3) INSTALLED THE OLD XCODE THAT IS ON THE ORIGINAL INSTALL CD'S.
    4) INSTALL THE NEW SNOW LEOPARD OPERATING SYSTEM.
    5) INSTALL XCODE 3.2 PACKAGE INCLUDED WITH THE SNOW LEOPARD CD.
    6) ALL SHOULD WORK FINE.
    I SUSPECT THAT IN THE PACKAGE INSTALL ROUTINE THE INSTALL CHECKSUM DID NOT CONFIRM A VALID INSTALL OF SNOW LEOPARD OVER THE ORIGINAL COMPUTER OPERATING SYSTEM.
    THIS WAS TIME CONSUMING BUT EVERY STEP PRODUCED A "BIG GREEN CHECK MARK" CONFIRMING THE INSTALLS WORKED CORRECTLY.
    I NOW ALSO HAVE WINDOWS XP RUNNING UNDER PARALLELS DESKTOP 4.0 FOR MAC RUNNING CORRECTLY ALSO.
