Clean install of Windows 10 Retail (when it comes out)
I posted the following thread on the Windows forums but I think the Lenovo Community will help me better, I'd also like to specify that even if Windows 10 Retail version hasn't come out and Technical Preview is not enough to be able to help me, let's try to imagine Windows 10 will work in the same way as Windows 8.1 ok?
I bought a laptop with windows 8.1 pre-installed so I'm pretty sure it is UEFI-enabled, now I want to install Windows 10, a clean install, which means I want to delete all the partitions, but when I was looking through the Disk Manager and GParted (I also have Ubuntu, but uninstalling it is no problem, I already know how) I noticed there are a few partitions that I'm not sure if it's safe to uninstall, specially the EFI partition, this is how it appears in Disk Manager:
Recovery Partition.
EFI System Partition.
OEM Partition.
Windows Partition.
Lenovo Partition.
Recovery Partition.
This is what GParted shows after installing Ubuntu:
sda1 WINRE_DRV (Recovery)
sda2 SYSTEM_DRV (EFI)
sda3 LRS_ESP (OEM)
sda4 unkown (if possible I'd like to know what could this be.
sda5 Windows
sda8 Ubuntu
sda6 Lenovo
sda7 PBR_DRV (Recovery)
Main question is: Is it safe to completely remove all the partitions (including EFI and Unknown) or could that cause problems with the UEFI boot? Will Windows 10 TP or Retail after it comes out auto-creates the EFI and WINRE partitions (and Unknown)? Or do I have to do it when I'm installing like Ubuntu?
What is the unkown partition?
I hope you can fill me with knowledge in this area and thanks a lot for your attention

Fair point. If I had a large enough bank account I surely would be running two separate machines. With the only option being one computer for purchase I went with the Mac and windows dual as you can see by this threads title. For my case it was ideal. For you, no, but in my case there was no better option.
I understand that, and have been there but these machines (and I have a lot of Macs, only 4 PC's) are just revenue streams for me, they do various tasks cheaper than a bunch of dedicated hardware, and I can troubleshoot from a remote location far easier than I can with the dedicated stuff. The simple truth is that for me to dedicate a Mac to running one or two Windows programs entails far more cost than a Windows PC, and there is no advantage to offset the extra cost. -
How to do a CLEAN INSTALL of Windows 8.1 with a Windows 8 OEM Key
I have recently purchased a new C540 that has Windows 8 already installed on it. I would like to perform a clean install of Windows 8.1 on this computer.
This is what I have done so far:
I disabled 3 things in the BIOS: IIRC, they were secure boot, quick boot, and something about "optimized" startup
I have changed my boot priority to put the CD/DVD drive first and any flashdrive 2nd
I have figured out my OEM Windows Product Key (this is for a Windows 8 Core/64 bit OS)
I have setup a flashdrive with Windows 8.1 on it
I tried to boot from the flashdrive...when I get the option to install windows 8.1, I click on it and very quickly get the following error -- "The product key entered does not match any of the Windows images available for installation. Enter a different product key."
I added a PID.txt file with my OEM product key in the Source folder of the Windows 8.1 install....I don't get the above error message immediately, but a screen comes up that asks me to enter a Product Code...my OEM product code (being for W8, not W8.1) does not work while using a generic key (for Windows 8.1 Core) yields the same error message as above and exits the installer.
I then added an EI.CFG file that sets the edition to core, the version to OEM, and the Volume to 0...unfortunately, when trying to install Windows 8.1 it still asks me for a product key before installing...I cannot get past this screen even though (to my understanding) the EI.CFG file should cause the installer to skip asking for a product key...
It is important to me that I get to perform a CLEAN install of Windows 8.1...I do not want to upgrade through windows store...the only keys I have are a W8 Pro Retail key (for my laptop) and a W8 Core OEM key (that came with the new C540)...I am using a flashdrive to perform this since I knew I may have to add/change files like the PID and EI.CFG....
I would appreciate any help I can get in solving this problem...I am also willing to try burning an .iso with the PID and/or EI.CFG, but I'm trying to avoid trial and error with that since it is time consuming, requires an ADK, and may waste DVDs...I'd only make an .iso if (for whatever reason) that would work where a flashdrive woud not...I have a new SSD drive and need to either migrate my old HD data, including the Windows 8.1 OS or do a a clean install. I have obtained the ISO, prepared the boot for the flashdrive and downloaded the install software. It asks for the product key. I used the suggested BIOS reader and obtained "a" product key off the BIOS and used that it but (as above) it does not recognize the image.
How id I get my single Windows license onto my new SSD HD? Reload, clean install, ???
How do I get the proper product key or confirm it is correct?
It is a new system with little data that I need to copy. I just want the operating system. I have the driver disc that came with it. -
Error 0x80070015 on clean install of windows 8.1 enterprise
Hi, I am receiving and error 0x80070015 when trying to do a clean install of windows 8.1 enterprise evaluation on to a newly built PC. I am installing from a USB stick to a brand new SSD running in ACHI mode. Each time the installation reaches
12% on the 'getting files ready for installation' I receive this error message. The first time I tried the installation I also got an error message 0x800703ee but this has now stopped.
Please go easy on me, I'm not an IT pro, I want to check out windows 8.1 on this new build to decide if I want to go with it or stick with Windows 7 on this and my other work PC.
Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks, SimonHi,
Error code 0x80070015 usually means "device not ready" and is often seen when the USB drive or disc is having issues.
Please re-create a bootable USB or DVD to check the results.
Another thing is that there might be some SATA clash on your system with the new SSD connected. Please try to enter the WinRE from your USB drive and try following commands to create new partition:
1. Use Diskpart command line to show the partition on your disk:
Run CMD as Administrator, type following command line one by one:
DISKPART
List Disk
Select Disk 0
2. Delete the system partition (if there is, it can be about 100~200MB) and C partition, delete these 2:
List Partition
Select Partition 0 (I suspect that there is the system partition on this disk and it’s the partition 0)
Delete Partition
Select Partition 1 (I suspect that this is the C drive)
Delete Partition
3. Create new one.
Create Partition Primary
4. Try to restart system via installation disk and reinstall Windows 8 on it.
For detailed information about this command, you can refer to this article:
DISKPART:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc770877(v=ws.10).aspx
If the issue persists, please run Check disk tool in WinRE:
CHKDSK /R /F
Any error message, please post back.
Hope these could be helpful. -

Clean install of windows 8 crashing with BSoD: "attempted execute of noexecute memory"
I recently bought this computer (sorry for hyperlink, but it is much easier than trying to list all the components):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227593
I added a Samsung 840 EVO 250gb SSD to it, and then I attempted to do a clean install of windows 8.1 onto the SSD from
the reinstall DVD that came with the system. Windows 8.1 appears to install correctly, but when the computer restarts to load windows for the first time, I get a BSoD with the error "attempted execute of noexecute memory". I tried reinstalling, but
got the same error.
Note that for testing purposes, I installed windows 7 on the SSD, and it works great. Unfortunately, I do not have a windows
7 key, so this is only a temporary solution. I would like to figure out how to get windows 8.1 on the SSD and running on the my computer.
Thank you in advance for any help or advice that you can give me.

Hi everyone,
could anyone of you please
who has a clean install of Windows
8.1 on the SSD drive look at some settings
of certain services (below)?
Thank you.
Prefetch and Superfetch. In registry located on way
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM \CurrentControlSet\ Control\ SessionManager \MemoryManagement \PrefetchParameters.
I am interested in EnablePrefetcher and
EnableSuperfetch REG_DWORD value.
Just a number in parentheses.
ReadyBoot. In registry located on way HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM \CurrentControlSet\Control \WMI\Autologger\ReadyBoot.
I am interested REG_DWORD value of
Start. Just a number in parentheses.
Run dfrgui command. Go to Change settings and have a look if SSD on which is the system installed is included in regular optimalization schedule.
Registry can be accessed running regedit command.Hi,
Prefetch and Superfetch means that most commonly used files are stored to disk to be more quickly accessed later.
For Prefetch:
Disable Caching: 0
Cache Applications Only: 1
Cache Boot Files Only: 2
Cache Everything (default): 3
For SuperFetch:Disable Caching: 0
Cache Boot Processed Only: 1
Cache Applications Only: 2
Cache Everything (default): 3
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\WMI\Autologger\ReadyBoot\Start value means:
disable: 0
enable: 1

Can I clean install a Windows 7 Pro System Builder on a Lenovo PC with Windows 8 preinstalled?
Hi. I would like to clean install windows 7 on a Lenovo PC that came with Windows 8 core preinstalled. I want to format the entire drive and remove windows 8 and clean install windows 7. I already tried the clean install of Windows 7 Pro to get all of my drivers in line, and now I would like to buy a Product Key.
Would a Windows 7 Pro System Builder work in my case? Would it work just as smoothly as a retail version? I understand that the System Builder is an OEM version that includes the Product Key, COA, and DVD) Just want to make sure before I buy the System Builder version of Windows 7 Pro. Thanks.
Grazzie
Solved!
Go to Solution.that should be retail since it seemed to be used for pc upgrades either way your new system builder key should work. those are called refresh because they re-released them sincea bug was found in thier installers. Do you have any key in the computer atm? or is windows just waiting to be activated?
EDIT: its a good copy look here> http://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft/14-windows-7-direct-download-links
Should you want to use the DVD images permanently, and don't own a product key yet, you can order a Windows 7 OEM or retail version from Amazon. The OEM reinstallation versions contain a DVD with a product key just like the retail versions. They are significantly cheaper, but lack a proper box packaging, and don't include technical support by Microsoft. The OEM key will work with the Digital River downloads, so you can just pick the cheapest one. Sometimes better editions are the cheaper ones, so all of the following links to Amazon offers might be worth checking. I've already tried to find good deals for all editions and linked to them here:

I am about to perform a clean install of Windows 8, however I don't want to lose my copies of Adobe Photoshop Elements 7.0 and Premiere Elements 7.0. These programs were both pre-installed on my Sony-Vaio so I don't have a media disc for them. How can I retain these programs and activate them on my updated PC?
A clean install of Windows 8 will wipe out your other files by definition as will the recovery disks. Fortunately, Windows 8 has some new Maintenance options not seen in prior versions. You can try an OS "refresh" which will install new Windows 8 system files without disturbing your data or settings.

You will want to back up your important files before you do this as there is a small chance it can go awry. -
[Helix gen2] Clean Install of Windows 8.1 - one unknown device left
Hi,
I did a clean install of win 8.1 with the suggested procedure (System Updater, Solution Center)
Unfortunately, there is one unknown device left in the device manager:
Intel(R) Serial IO SPI Host Controller - 9CE5
ACPI\VFSI6101\1
which I thought could be solved by this driver:
http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-helix-series-laptops/thinkpad...
But without success. So could anyone help? Which is the right driver? Or what should I do?
Thx Ralf
Moderator comment: New thread created. Subject edited to match. Was: Re: Lenovo Helix - Clean Install of Windows 8.1 - Best way to load Software and Drivers
Solved!
Go to Solution.Good day and welcome to the community.
I found a few vague references of VFSI6101 being related to a Validity Fingerprint Sensor.
Looking at the Helix Gen2 driver pages: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-helix-series-laptops/thinkpad...
and specifically at the FPR software package page:
http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-helix-series-laptops/thinkpad...
there's a reference to: "Synaptics FP Sensors(WBF) VFS6101". Pretty close!
So you might try that to see if it clears up the orphaned device.
Hope this helps a bit.
Regards.

Help with Performing a Clean Install of Windows 8.1
Hey. I just bought a laptop today and it came with Windows 8.1. However, my issue is that my OS resides in a huge partition (900+ MB). And I don't want this. I want to re-allocate space, and take a portion from my OS's drive in order to create more partitions.
However, to do that, I have to format the drive, which I can't 'cause it contains the OS.
Bottom line: I don't have a CD installer for Windows 8 or Windows 8.1. I am trying to perform a clean install of Windows 8.1 in my laptop. Can I get the installer online? Can I use the product key here in my already activated Windows 8.1 OS? Do I need to
install Windows 8 before installing Windows 8.1?
you may be able to shrink the existing volume(s):

How to do a clean install of Windows?
Is there anything I should know before doing a clean install of Windows on my laptop? It's a GS60 Ghost. I got my product key using Magical Jellybean KeyFinder, but from what I've heard I won't need that since the key is stored in the BIOS. So I guess all I need to do is put the right version of Windows on a USB and install it, right?
The OEM DPK stored in the BIOS only activate the same type of Windows. For example, most of MSI laptops were preloaded with Windows 8.1 standard (PS: "standard" won't be shown in the "System" window) and planted with OEM DPKs for Windows 8.1 standard. If you install the Windows 8.1 Pro version, it won't be activated by the key.
However, if your Windows 8.1 Pro is bought from the shop, you'll need to enter a key provided in the box when installing. And then it will automatically activate the OS by connecting to the Internet. In this way, the OEM DPK in the BIOS will be ignored. -
After doing a clean install of Windows 10
I am worried that if I do a clean install of Windows 10, I won't be able to re-install the pre-installed apps that were on the laptop when I purchased it. Afterward, will it still register as a Toshiba and allow me to re-install any/all of their programming? Thank you!
What computer do you have?

How to do a clean install of windows 10 on a different drive?
Hi all. Today I decided to make the switch to windows 10. I want to do a clean install, however, because I recently got an SSD and want to install the OS on that instead of on my hard drive. First off, do I even need my product key to do a clean install onto a new drive? I made a clone of my C: dirve just in case something goes wrong, just FYI. My SSD is 100% empty and has 110GB available on it but my main hard drive has about 400GB of stuff on it, so cloning my drive to the SSD is out of the picture. So basically what I want to know is this: 1. Do I need to have my windows key to do a clean install of windows 10 from windows 8.1 onto a different drive.2. If not, how do I do a clean install onto a new drive3. If I need it, how do I get it? Thanks all
The easiest solution would be to back up the data you wish to keep on an external hard drive then delete that data and programs from the old hard drive so that only the OS remains. From there use migration software from your SSD manufacturer to clone the old drive to the new SSD using a USB to SATA cable. The Windows key is embedded in the BIOS and will be recognized by the computer on any installs. It would be advisable to retrieve your key, just in case, using Belarc Advisor which gives you all sorts of info about your computer.
