Clean Install Of Yosemite Is Stuck!!
I am trying to do a clean install of Yosemite into a 2011 Macbook Air via a thumb drive after erasing the hard drive but the installer gets stuck at 8 or 9 minutes left and does not move past that. I have left it overnight and it did not change. I have tried about 3 install attempts. I have used the thumb drive method before with Mavericks and it worked fine. The last item in the install log is :
376 Oct 22 07:11:26 Macbook-Air.local OSInstaller[414] PackageKit: Extracting File:///System/Installation/Packages/Essentials.pkg (destination=/Volumes/Macintosh HD/.OSInstallSandboxPath/Root, uid=0)
Any thoughts on how to get it to finish installing?
Remove the Boot Camp partition only with Boot Camp Assistant, not with Disk Utility.
Install or Reinstall OS X from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

How to do a clean install of yosemite (have Mavericks 10.9.5 now) and then just install certain files, apps, documents, phopt's, etc...from time machine backup?
Do a backup before doing anything.
If you want to make a clean install of Mountain Lion, boot into the Recovery Volume (command - R) on a restart, use Disk Utility to Verify/Repair the disk and run Repair Permissions. Then erase the hard drive using Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format using the Options button. Reinstall Yosemite. Restart normally and test. Use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to import what you want.

MBP 2012 still slow after clean install of Yosemite
Hello,
I'm hoping someone can help me, I've done just about everything I can find online to get my MBP to work like it used to. After unsuccessful attempts at different workarounds, I decided to wipe everything perform a clean install of Yosemite.
Still no luck!! #nobueno
Problem description:
After clean install of Yosemite, my MacBook Pro (2012) continues to run at a snailspace. Very slow!

Feb 18, 2015, 10:03:37 AM Self test - passed
Feb 18, 2015, 09:55:07 AM /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/mbpluginhost_2015-02-18-095507_[redacted].crash1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/libexec;clear;cd;p=(1248 ' 0.5 0.25 10 1000 15 5120 1000 25000 1 1 0 100 ' 51 25600 4 10 25 5120 102400 1000 25 1000 150 40 500 300 85 25 20480 262144 20 2000 Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
[Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
Please close this window.
[Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I may not agree with them.

After a clean install of Yosemite in iCloud remained links, which were opened in Safari on the Mavericks.
Please help remove old and obsolete references to iCloud for Safari.Hi leonie,
It looks like once my computer was subject to a clean install of OSX Mavericks, programs installed with iLife, i.e. iWeb, GarageBand. iPhoto, etc, were removed from my HD and cannot now be reinstalled.. I form the impression that they are not on the installation DVD's that shipped with my computer, and having examined the disks by placing them in my machine, there is no way I can tell whether that is correct, since there is no 'button' that allows me to look for their presence on the disks.
If you can shed any light on that conclusion, I'd be grateful for any advice you could offer. I guess it's not super imperitive that I have GarageBand '09, I can get by without it, but it would have been nice to have, and a couple of my songs use loops that were from GB '09, and these are now absent from the songs when played back in GB X. Of course, I cannot download the '09 version from the App store. Looks like Apple has me borked!
Thanks for your help, anyway, I'm always pleased to see your name here..

HT201475 how to do clean install of yosemite
how to do clean install of yosemite
Do a backup before doing anything.
If you want to make a clean install of Yosemite boot into the Recovery Volume (command - R) on a restart, use Disk Utility to Verify/Repair the disk and run Repair Permissions. Then erase the hard drive using Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format using the Options button. Reinstall Yosemite. Restart normally and test. Use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to import what you want.
Clean Install
I would download the installer and you can make a bootable USB stick to install using this free program. You can then install from there.

The advantages of a clean install of Yosemite.
I am just wondering if it would be better to do a clean install of Yosemite rather than installing the OS without first wiping the computer clean? What are the advantages to doing a clean install over installing Yosemite without wiping the computer clean before hand?
Thanks
DaveThere won't be any compatible processes left over from the previous installation (unless you put them back later). The same is true if you prepare your existing installation before upgrading it.
Make a backup first, whatever you choose to do. -
Help with Clean Install of Yosemite
I am doing a clean install of Yosemite in hopes of resolving my many MacBook Pro issues. This has been recommended by Apple Support before installing a new hard drive which would be the next option.
My Macbook Pro is an early 2011, running Mavericks, 2.7 GHz Inel Core i7, OSX 10.9.5. 16 G B Ram, 500 GB Hard Drive with over half available.
I have Yosemite on a Bootable USB drive and a current back up on a separate external hard drive. The question I have is should I update to Yosemite first, do another back-up and then do the clean install or is this an unnecessary step?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

How do you have your data backed up? Time Machine or another method? If Time Machine, run it from the recovery partition and then install Yosemite. If you simply have data stored on the external HDD with no OSX, Install Yosemite and then transfer the user data.

Verify Clean Install of Yosemite and DiskUtil output
My iMac didn’t recover from the latest OS X Yosemite update after the reload.
After doing a “command R” I noticed DiskUtilty was only showing the SSD part of my hard drive and to cut a long story short after messing around all week (wiping hard drive in diskutility/booting Yosemite from USB stick etc) I seem to have my full 3TB hard drive back with a fresh version of Yosemite on it.
I’ve been at this position before though and when I try and restore my iMac settings from TimeCapsule, it hangs about an hour into it and the Fusion drive needs to be repaired again.
Before trying to restore my time capsule backup again I’d like to know the current setup (clean install of Yosemite) is how it should be.
What I’d like know is what output I should expect to see from “distil list” from the Terminal?
Should it look like the below?

Problems loading Time machine since clean install of Yosemite.
I have an IMAC 27"/2.8QC/2x2GB/1TB/5750/SD.
I recently tried to upgrade to Yosemite without success, I ended up taking my IMAC to my local Apple store and they ended up doing a clean install of Yosemite. When I came home I completed the install and plugged in my Time Machine to recover the historical date i.e. files/photos etc. Time machine is showing files going back to the 4th September and no further so far although it should be going back nearly four years, I am also unable to select any of the files/photos to restore. Any help would be appreciated.Time Machine in Yosemite must index all of the old backups on your backup drive before they will work correctly.
That process will take a long time....a very long time if you have backups going back 4 years.
With my Mac connected to a Time Capsule using an Ethernet connection, it took 2 days for Time Machine to index the old backups, and my backups only went back about a year. It might take a week for Time Machine to index all your old backups.....assuming you are using Ethernet.
If your Mac connects using wireless to your network, the indexing process will likely take 3-4 times longer.
You will know when the indexing is nearing completion when you can access your backups and go back 24-36 months to see them. -

Dec 18, 2014, 05:01:33 PM Self test - passedI did all the things you suggested & it is running much better! After that, in doing the permissions repair with Disk Utility there were some to repair initially, but in running again there were none to repair.
Font Book validate initially showed several fonts with major problems but after restoring fonts & doing the start up in Safe Mode & restarting, there were no major errors but still 9 with minor problems.
Are there additional things that I should now do?
Linc, I thank you soooooooo much!
Wayne
In running Activity Monitor, under Real Memory kernel_task initially was 1.81 GB, then dropped to 430.4 MB but now when I open it was showing 1.28 GB but is up to 1.30 now. Maybe the following will help.

Do you guys know if this is a bug?
I created a custom USB Yosemite installer using the 'createinstallmedia' binary inside the Yosemite installer.
Booted iMac with this USB installer and proceeded to install Yosemite (fresh formatted drive). No problems.
When I log in however, and check the Sharing PreferencePane, both Screen Sharing and Remote Login are turned on.
I've tried this multiple times (repartitioning the drive each time and I have created the installer media twice).
I'm posting this I guess more as a report as the solution is simple enough (uncheck these services).
But it's definitely a security risk.Just 2 minutes before I received your reply I solved the problem. I have been running a software firewall (DoorStop X) on the Mac Pro. It turns out that I had not allowed traffic over two ports necessary for Home Sharing– port 3689 and udp port 5353. When I corrected this everything is back to normal.
I did the clean install because I've been having intermittent problems with several apps including Compressor, Safari, and to a lesser extent FCP. I've been contemplating doing this for several months because of all the garbage that has collected on my system over several years since I last started from scratch. I have a bad habit of installing things that add kext files and otherwise modify the OS. I decided to get rid of all that stuff. I'm glad I did. All the problems I was having seem to have resolved. Safari runs 3x faster than it ever has. And I no longer have the headaches that Compressor was giving me. I think I'll take better care of my system from now on.

New MBP comes with Mavericks - Upgrade vs Clean Install of Yosemite at this point?
Bought a New 13" MBP today from my local Apple Store. It came with Mavericks instead of Yosemite. I realize there is probably a lot of advantages to doing a clean install of any OS, especially when you have a lot of usage on it which creates files all over. However, I'm wondering if that advantage is minimized by doing an upgrade with a pristine OS. If very few, if any, files are left behind from Mavericks that are no longer needed does it matter?
Obviously upgrading saves me from having to go through the hassle of creating a bootable USB (wherever that thing is in one of the many junk drawers). If it were I, I would just di a clean install if you have not configured it already...it's good to have a bootable USB hanging around just in case. It's easy to make one in Terminal if you have at least an eight (8) GB available with this (I just finished one):
sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app --nointeraction -
Problem trying to do a clean install of Yosemite
A friend of mine installed windows 8.1 on my macbook but he somehow managed to wipe out the original yosemite installation and now when I try to reboot it and install from a usb stick windows goes right through it and I believe it doesn't even recognize the usb, anyone know of anything I could do? Like formating the windows 8 and installing the OS X? Please help
If you have access to another Mac computer, go to the App Store, sign in with your Apple ID, and download Yosemite.
You can make a bootable USB stick to install using this free program which will do all the work for you.
Bootable USB Flash Drive – Diskmaker X
Go back to your computer, boot off that Disk, and reinstall Yosemite on the Yosemite partition. -
After a clean install of Yosemite, the App Store is asking me to update to Beta 5.
I was running the public betas, updated all the way to beta 6. When Yosemite was released last week, I backed up my computer with Time Machine, and erased the disk. I installed Yosemite as a new installation. Shortly after, the App Store is telling me I can update to Beta 5, despite having the latest 'full' release.
Image here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/k8mv6zxk7tjvxs3/Screenshot%202014-10-20%2016.27.58.png ?dl=0Yes even if it is installed it will still show in the Purchases section/area so if needed you can download it again.
This was a Problem with Lion. After people bought and installed Lion if they went back to the MAS to say download it again to another Mac they owned, which it totally legal, Lion did not show in the purchases area and in the main MAS area it was displayed with a BUY button. You had to hold down the Option key, I think it was, for the Buy button to turn to a Download, or something, button. It was very confusing. Apple is trying to clear that up by placing Mt Lion in your Purchases area so if you wanted to Re-Download it on your computer or another that you own you can easily.
If you click that Download button in the Purchases area of the MAS it may ask you for your Apple ID and password or just your password but it will not charge you for it again.
Has that helped? -
How much of a clean install is Yosemite?
My mac has been losing it's internet connection a lot. The Wi-Fi signal is still there, but every once in a while it just can't find the internet. When this happens I have to log out and restart my machine. It isn't the router since I don't have the same issues with my iPad, iPhone, Windows 8, or Ubuntu computers, just my iMac. I was going to reinstall Maverick, but then I thought why not just upgrade to Yosemite. Which I did a couple of hours ago. Then just now I lost my internet connection.
So my question is this... is there any profit in reinstalling Yosemite? I'm not quite at the point of wiping my entire hard drive and doing a complete clean reinstall (well almost).I doubt that erasing your system merely to reinstall Yosemite anew is going to make any difference with an intermittent Wi-Fi connection, so I don't recommend it. In other words the answer is no.
I suggest using Apple's Wireless Diagnostics to provide additional helpful information:
