"Clean install" on PowerMac G5?
How do you execute a "Clean Install" on a PowerMac G5. I am currently running Mac OS 10.5.8. And I have Mac OS X Leopard Install CD (not Snow Leopard).
The reason I need to do this is that my OS is acting very quirky. For instance, I need to force quit the login window from the Activity Monitor in order to shutdown/restart, my CD burner and sound controls are "inactive" for several minutes and when I am running and application (e.g. Safari, InDesign), it acts like it is trying to switch windows by itself.
Boot from your Leopard DVD. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. At the point where you select a destination select your drive then click on the Options button. Select the Erase and Install option then click on the OK button. Complete the installation.

Clean Install G4 Dual 1 GHz-Not enough Disk Space Error? -SLOW USB copies
HELP puhleeeeze!
This seems to be an issue on various sites with no one being able to figure out what is the cause and a solution. One person stated his problem went away with a fullwipe and clean-reinstall of everything. But this is what I did already.
What is the reason for the "Not Enough Disk Space" error message when both my hard drives have gigs of space available. If I had hair I'd be pulling it out by now! When trying to copy a file to my 2 internal hard drives that have a lot of space available, but only by the USB port?!!
I have a Power Mac G4 Mirrored Door (MDD) Dual 1 GHz with a clean install of 10.5.8 from the Original Mac OS X Leopard DVD. Both internal hard drives are 60GB and 100GB. The hard drives were wiped clean with Disc Utilities and reformatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). The Power Mac only has the OS and a few music apps installed. Easily over 30 GB of space left on the the main G4 interal hard drive and about 75 GB on the other internal hard drive.
The error seems to only happen when I connect a USB flash drive to the USB port. I tried to copy a 50MB update to the desktop-"Not Enough Disk Space" error message happened.
I know that the G4 MDD Power Macs only have USB 1.0. Is this a USB 2.0 issue? Another issue is that it has very slow USB speed (dramtically slower than normal USB 1.0 copying of files. And this is only when it is successful. Is it a USB format issue? I know I couldn't get an external USB 2.0 drive to mount on the Power Mac at all. Disc Utilities could see it but it still would not mount. I have a friend who has an older G4 single processor Mac that doesn't experience these issues with its USB 1.0 ports.
Now here's the kicker:
If I put in a CD disc in the DVD/RW drive, it copies with no problems to either hard drive. If I connect to the Power Mac via the ethernet network, files can copy with no problems. But any USB connection - I get a the "Not Enough Disk Space" error message. I know this is an old mac... but it's never been problematic until this latest wipe and update to Leopard 10.5.8.
Is there a solution to this? Any and all help, feedback, comments, thoughts are greatly appreciated in advance!!!Hello everyone,
Ok, I did the ultimate task. I erased the hard drives, AGAIN. Just to start fresh from scratch. Hard drives were erased. Did a new install of Mac OS 10.5. And all was well. I could copy with no problems. I gave the computer to my friend and all was good for a couple of days and then the issue came back again. He couldn't copy anything to his internal hard drives and we received the "Not enough disk space" error message! I was baffled. A complete hard drive erase 2 times, 2 fresh Mac OS 10.5 installs and it works for a few days and then coping to HD we got the same **** problem again! THEN - I remembered that the PRAM battery was dead on this G4 Mirrored-Door Dual 1GHz PowerMac. I had recommended that he get a new battery, because this computer would always have the incorrect date and time after every restart. So with recalling this, I had him reset the PRAM by holding down the CMD+OPT+P+R keys after a restart (start-up Chime). I had him hold the keys for at least 3 start-up-chimes. Soon as the G4 Power Mac started up everything was fine again. He was able to copy files to his hard drives again with the "Not enough disk space" error message.
So everyone! Try zapping your PRAM (resetting the PRAM) and see if this solves your problem. I told my friend to get a new PRAM battery to replace the old one that is completely dead. I have not heard back from him. I will ask him again if the problem has come back.
If that fails: My only other solution would be to consider that it is possible that Mac OS 10.5 has a conflict or issue with the G4 Processors and maybe it is safer to install Mac OS 10.3 or 10.4. Because this problem only has occured after installing Mac OS 10.5, the highest version of the Mac OS the Dual 1GHz Mirrored-Door G4 can be installed.
Cheers,

GUID Partition Scheme - Need clean install: can I restore files from TM?
So, here's my problem. I have an Intel PowerMac (first series after the G5) and when I try to install SL I get the following error message: "Can't Install Snow Leopard Since Disk Does Not Use GUID Partition Scheme". I guess it's something related to the fact thet I previously upgraded from an old iMac with a PPC processor (Apple partition vs. GUID partition).
Anyway, accoding to my understanding, the only solution for me is to do a clean install by wiping the HD and re-partitioning it.
Now, my question is: can I use my current TM backup to later restore apps/prefs onto the new SL system? I believe that TM now has an Apple partition scheme that reflects the one I have on Leopard 10.5. Is that right? Will I encounter any problem because of the different partition type of TM?"Anyway, accoding to my understanding, the only solution for me is to do a clean install by wiping the HD and re-partitioning it."
Right, except that your drive will automatically be erased when you set up the GUID partitiion.
"Now, my question is: can I use my current TM backup to later restore apps/prefs onto the new SL system? I believe that TM now has an Apple partition scheme that reflects the one I have on Leopard 10.5. Is that right? Will I encounter any problem because of the different partition type of TM?"
Your TM backup should work. But, there are not many guarantees in life. You could tranfer you TM backup temporarily to your internal and then make a bootable clone of your internal on your external. Afterwards, you could transfer the TM backup back. Then, you'd have two sources from which you could restore items.

Where is the Clean Install file for Flash Player for Mac?
The troubleshooting for Mac Install of Flash Player suggests that one uninstall and then perform a clean install. I believe that this has also been referred to as an "offline" installer. When one clicks on the the link to the clean install, one obtains the dreaded "404", File not Found error. Does anyone know where one can find the clean install file. The standard update almost never, ever works on my 2009 PowerMac, now running Yosemite. Would someone please suggest to the folks running the Adobe website that it would be nice to have a working link to such a file. This issue has come up before. Would someone also suggest that before any new update is unleashed upon the world that someone make sure that the "Clean Install" link is linked to a download of a "Clean Install" installer?
Many thanks,
T. OlsenHere is the first part of it, hope it helps.

ITunes Treats Clean Install As A New Computer!
Hi All.
Okay - I've got two networked computers in my office, both PowerMac G4s running Panther.
Before I state the problem, I'll concede that I understand that songs purchased on computer A will naturally treat computer B as a separate entity, therefore the license will read "Two computers out of your allowable five have been licensed to play this song."
That's all understandable.
However, since I've had to do a clean install of Panther on both computers, iTunes thinks that I'm playing those same songs on two completely different computers and has told me that I am now using FOUR of my allowable five machines!
This is ridiculous. What happens if I have to do any further installs of OS? Does this mean that I won't be able to play my music because it will keep thinking they're different machines? Please tell me there's a way around this!
B.Problem....Now I have a new computer and I would like the new iTunes program find my music files on the external drive as well as all of the information that goes with it.
All of the info is in the iTunes library file, which the default location is in \Music\iTunes\ folder on your C: drive.
If you do not have that. you cannot get the info. -
Would a clean install help?
I have a Logitech USB headset that I use for Skype and Second Life. I normally use it on my iBook G4 and have never had an issue with it.
If I connect it to my PowerMac G5 (late 2003) I sometimes get audio output but no response from the microphone. The headset rarely works completely on the G5.
Sound preferences have been configured correctly for both input andoutput. I have tried connecting to every USB port on the CPU, both ports on the keyboard and all five ports on my powered hub with the hub connected to all three powered CPU ports. I have also duplicated the audio input issue using an analog microphone connected both via the audio in port and a USB iMic interface.
Both the G5 and my iBook are up-to-date with OSX and security updates.
I am not experiencing any problems with any other USB peripherals.
I would suspect that somewhere along the line, the G5's audio settings/software/etc. may have become corrupted or otherwise gone bad. Anybody out there with a different opinion before I backup the G5 and re-install Tiger?
Any help is greatly appreciated.I went ahead with the clean install of Tiger today.
So far, the headset is working properly. I'll post again if that changes. -
Clean install 10.4 Tiger without original disc...?
Hi,
I am currently in the process of selling my olf PowerMac G5, running Tiger. I wish to do a clean install of the OS to fully erase my data on the computer before selling it. The problem is that I cannot find the original installation discs that came with the machine anywhere.
I have found a 10.4 installation disc, but this is labelled Mac Pro, not PowerMac. Looking on the disc itself, it says its a UB application, so potentially good to work on PPC?
If not, is there any way I can wipe the system of all my private data without having to do a reinstall? This would be the best solution, if possible.
Many thanks,
SteveThe new owner will need some kind of Install Disc, but...
In System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click the little + icon & add a new Admin user, log into that account, remove the old account, then use Disk Utility to Decure Erase Free Space. -
After receiving an error when I try to install the latest update of OS-X, I took my laptop to oour schools IT dept. They tried to run the update in safe mode and then they got an error saying the system could not find the hard drive. Now they want to run a clean install which loses 1000's of docs and pictures. I have Block I exams in med school next Monday and all of my notes and slides are on that hard drive.
The IT dept took the hard drive out and tried to back it up and they said they other computer could not connect or find my hard drive.
Major panic....
I have Norton antivirus and have never found any viruses on the system. I also have a program called ExamSoft which some other students here have noted they had similar crashes. Not sure if that is the issue...Several take home messages here:
always back up before you update.
always back up anything you don't want to lose. Kind of like flossing. Only floss the teeth you don't want to lose.
Norton is very, very bad software, and you should get rid of it.
You don't need antivirus software on your mac. Antivirus software on macs causes more trouble than it is worth.
Your hard drive may be failing and thus may not be salvageable.
You could try booting into the recovery partition and seeing if you can repair your hard drive.
If that doesn't work, then there is a small chance that a third party utility (like Disk Warrior or TechTool) might be able to fix your drive (if it is not failing).
If that doesn't work, you may be able to send your drive and a lot of cash to a drive recovery service and see if they can get your files off it.
In the mean time, get notes and slides from a (smart) friend. -
How many times can you clean install leopard on the same computer?
How many times can you clean install leopard on the same computer? Will the leopard dvd run out of installations and not let you install anymore?
Hi colman Prez;
Now that the funny comments have been made, I have a serious question and that why are you worry about reinstalling Leopard with an Erase & Install which is what I take that you mean when you say clean install. In actually fact there is no such thing in OS X as a clean install.
I am curious because in all the years I have used OS X, I have yet to do an Erase & Install yet.
I know with Windows that they suggest reformatting and reinstalling at the drop of a hat but that isn't true with OS X.
Allan -
One of my main goals is to be able to run a Windows application on my iMac, purchased in July, 2012, with the Intel 2.5Ghz i5, 4GB RAM, 500GB hard drive. At first I installed Boot Camp and then Win 7, then the application I need to run, and I don't recall having problems. But I tired of the required reboot each time and got greedy and needy - so I installed VMWare Fusion, only to be told that the W7 software I use won't work with Fusion, but it will with Parallels! So, I was able to get Parallels at a discount (because I had Fusion), and decided I would import Boot Camp into Parallels.
Then the problems began. I suspect I did something I shouldn't have during this process, but to shorten the story I did a clean install of ML, set up iCloud, and monitored Console for problems. And problems there were - lots of them, and they all seemed to reference iCloud in some way. Since I have the ML installer on a thumb drive I thought I'd see what happened if I did another clean install, but this time I'd ignore iCould altogether (yes, I have everything backed up to mypcback.com) and proceeded. As before, the errors streamed down Console's face as if it were my own. I've run OnyX, which seemed to help, but many of the issues persist. I'm at a loss as how to proceed other than invoke Apple Support, which, BTW, is not covered under Warranty.
I need to have a stable ML platform before I start using W7 and refuse to believe that the OSX is "just buggy." Can someone help. I have no other iDevices that need to be synced, and really don't see the need to set up iCloud. Noone else than I use the iMac. It should be pretty simple to create a stable OSX so I can go where I need to go. I realize 4GB is not a lot of memory and will look into that. For the moment, I can stip down Win 7, and OSX for that matter, to free up memory. I didn't want to included a bunch of log files, but I will if someone thinks that it would be helpful.
The follow are the latest entries into my system log file, after I lost connection to the internet, and then regained connection after rebooting my cable modem:

This DNS change is only the lastest manifestation of what seems like an endless list. Can anybody give me some direction before I have to pay Apple to fix what I think they broke themselvesa?!? BTW, I am not a tech. Thanking everyone who read this and especially to anyone who can help.Linc, thanks for the tips. I knew you'd have a good method. I asked for it because I have learned of some of the myths about OSX and it's need (or lack thereof) to be scrubbed, rinsed, and blown dry; suckering folks into buying all manner of utilities to keep your Mac spiffy at all times, when in fact it rarely needs any intervention at all because of its Unix background. In fact, I rarely shut mine down and I've learned that the system is actually designed to be left running under most circumstances.
To keep your data secure the three most important things to know is backup, backup, backup. I use a third-party, cloud-based back-up system. It can automatically make backups every hour if that's what I want and I can supplement that anytime by simply dropping a file into the application's desktop interface.
Since I last posted my Mac has been running smoothly and I've been able to install Parallels and Windows 7, as well as the VantagePoint software I mentioned. Though it crashed once this morning and I submit one line from the log file:
12/20/12 10:31:00.639 AM appleeventsd[54]: BUG in libdispatch: 12C60 - 1510 - 0x4
After a reboot, log entries spewed all manner of troubling messages, from those that are osascript-related to broken forks, etc. but as far as I know there were no actual crash logs generated until this afternoon, one being just a few minutes ago. Linc, would you be so kind to take a look and tell me if there's something I need to do?

Trust me when I tell you how much I appreciate your help. -
After a Lion clean install, how do I retrieve my data from external hard drive?
Following Apple advice I used Migration Assistant which crashed new system twice which is why I had to clean install Lion in the first place.
Is there a sure way of doing it?
I have only a few programs that I will have to install myself and that should not be a problem.
I just want my data, music and photos back where I can use them.Time machine backups. I went to migration assistant a few hours ago and limited my selection to "users", no need for applications, settings and other files. Stuff started moving over at a fast pace but has now seemed to stall.
I will let it run overnight as there are lots of songs and photos as well as a few movies.
If that does not work, then I will go into TM and try restore. I have restored some things in the past such a mail files and it has worked well.
The Apple fellow at the store told me to go right into TM, he may have had a point. I'll get it eventually. -
This is a little complicated.
I have a Thinkpad T-60 (4GB) and a T-61p (8GB)
Both machines have SATA drives partitioned in 3 (System, Images, Data)
Originally, both had XP (the T-61p was RAM upgraded to 8 GB before upgrade (remember the $50 early-bird special?)
I upgraded the T60 without problem (as I recall).
I had to get the 64-bit physical upgrade as you could only download the version you already had (32-bit; remember that disaster?) for the T-61p.
Figuring I had 4 GB on the T-60, I used 64 bit as well, ending up with only 3 GB active. I take it this was a waste and should have just used the 32-bit, right?
I clean installed (as I recall) 8.1 using a generic 8 key (right?) and then an 8.1 key (right?, or is that an 8 key that will still activate 8.1?)
So here it is 3 years later +/- and both 8.1 installs are pretty trashed so...
I downloaded both the 8.1 32-bit and 64-bit .iso's
I have my serial #'s
I tried a Reset on my Server last night (whole disk, no partitions) - it worked, and gave me an option to wipe all disks, or just the C: system disk (which I did, others intact). It is fine, all settings gone, no trash.
Now the question is what will happen with my partitioned drives. I want a clean install on the C: partition, and D: and E: left alone.
Will Reset trash all the partitions and load the entire disk? (NOT what I want) .. or ..
Should I use the Install option? (which I assume will go through the partition manager) and allow me to clean install on C: only.
Lastly, if I have read correctly, there is no point in putting 64-bit on the T-60 (4 GB) as all you end up is 3 GB active anyway, so I should go back to 32-bit and avoid the 64-bit headaches?
Thanks!!!Hello qudrcps,
About the ThinkPad T-60 can’t only recognize 3GB ram, please take a look the follow thread.
http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T61-and-prior-T-series-ThinkPad/T60P-Windows-7-64-bit-only-using-3-GB-of-RAM/td-p/377623
Intel Chipsets 945GM and 945PM do not support more than 3GB system memory (RAM), even when a 64-bit operating system is installed.
Please contact the manufacturer to confirm if the laptop support 4GB ram.
Please note: Since the website is not hosted by Microsoft, the link may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this information.
Please explain a bit about other requirements.
What do you mean about the physical disks 0,1? Do you have several disks?

After performing a clean install on a stock apple 1TB fusion Hard Drive it appears as things got reversed and showing my startup as not using the SSD portion. The SSD portion of the fusion drive used to be on top in disk utility, now its on the bottom. It also appears that I have to many partitions. Im thinking i need to reformat my Hard Drive again. I can't seem to find any answers.

According to your descriptioin, I don't think this is system problem, it should be Intel driver problem. It would be contact Intel to confirm this issue whether this is their driver problem.

A clean install on my MacBook Pro has left me with my icons stuck in the grid on the right side of my desktop. I had the ability to move them and have them stay put in various sectors of the desktop, which I found very useful. The clean install upgraded the OS to 10.6.8 from 10.5.8. I want to move them again but there I see no 'None' option which I think would free them to move where I wish. Has the upgrade deleted that option? Suggestions? I am new to this community and if not new to Mac, I often feel that way. This is one of those times.
Julz11 in NYCI have the same problem on the latest iTunes software and Windows 7. My window is maximzed and I do not see any tab for photos. Seems related to a recent update (IOS7?) as this was there - at least before the very big change to the interface.

Here is my problem, I want to upgrade my macbook pro mid 2007 3.1 AA896ll/a to an Solid State Drive, a Crucial m4 256 gb, I want to know if the macbook will be able to handle it and how do I do the switch. also once I install the drive will I be able to boot from my Snow Leoard original cd and do a clean install. Thank you
Coming from a 5,400 RPM drive that's nearly filled up, fragmented and deoptimized to a fresh install of OS X on a SSD will of course be a improvement.
However fresh installing OS X on a new 5,400 RPM will also see a improvement, boot up in 30 seconds.
A fresh install of OS X on a new 7,200 RPM drive will also see a improvement, boot up in 25 seconds.
A fresh install of OS X on a new SSD will see the best improvement, boot up in 20 seconds on fast SATA connections.
OS X still requires time to setup and that takes about 20 seconds despite how fast your boot drive is, that's why sleep was created.
Things to consider: The higher cost of a SSD, the limiting capacity (hard drives hold way more up), the SATA I speed limitations (slows up on large file transfers), the difficulty to scrub the SSD of unwanted data (like you can a hard drive), and it's limited write capability. Also the smaller SSD's are faster than the larger ones.
SSD's are shock proof, which is their slight advantage over hard drives.
I see a 120GB SSD in a SATA I machine as being a waste, it's too small of a storage space (500GB+ is ideal), the SATA I connection is slow and other factors that make a 7,200 RPM drive a better option in that machine.
One can get a 750 GB 7,200 RPM hard drive for about the same price and still maximize their boot time in the process, also being able to scrub their drive of unwanted data easily.
SSD's can't be scrubbed, one has to fill 50% of the remaining space with many, very small files to overwrite the free space, then do another 50% again to defeat the Trim/wear leveling as SSD's write to less used location each time. If one fills a OS X boot drive up completely, it won't function or won't boot up.
If you do this fill routine regularly with software, then you prematurely wear out the SSD as it has limited writes. Why Disk Utility doesn't offer zero or 7x erase for SSD's.
If your in the 10% of Internet traffic that's going to adult sites, then the ability to scrub the caches and storage drive of embarrassing unwanted data is a necessity. Especially in the light of software and hardware that can read the SSD of deleted data.
Trick links and redirects on poisoned sites can firebomb your Mac with some pretty bad pictures and your hidden caches as well, especially if you don't like to pay.
IT personal have at their disposal free open source forensic software that basically aggregates all the past behavior done on the machine into a nice, easy to view format with times, dates and when and where content was downloaded from.
Since one has to give up their password for repair folks to recover data and fix the machine...
I think a SSD is less of a benefit over a 7,200 hard drive for that particular model of Mac for a mere few seconds faster boot time.
