Clean install stuck after initial reboot

So I bought a Sandisk Ultra Plus SDSSDHP-256G-G25 256GB SSD yesterday to use with my Early 2011 Macbook Pro 13" model. I had to do a clean install, so I created a Mountain Lion USB stick to install the OS. The initial installation went fine and it automatically rebooted itself like it is supposed to, but my MBP has been stuck at this installation screen for about 2-3 hours now and I'm unsure what to do. I clean installed Mountain Lion much faster on my old 320GB WD Black hard drive and it doesn't make sense for it to be taking this long. Thanks for the help in advance.

You could safely install again from stick.

  • WSUS - Installing patches after a reboot

I have set up all my servers with Group Policy set to Download Updates and Notify for Install. The detection period is set to 6 hours. I have Approved the patches in WSUS and set a deadline for 2 days time at 9am to allow the patches time to download etc.
At 9am the Patches start to install as expected and the servers reboot as required by the patches.
When I look in WSUS it shows there are now 2 remaining
Approved patches to be installed on the servers - still with the deadline I set of 9am. These updates however don't install straight away as I had hoped. Is that by design or have I missed a setting in the Policy? I was hoping to kick off the updates
and come back to find them all sitting at 100%. If this is by design it's going to take a while PS. Some of our servers haven't been patched in a long time so there could be a number of reboots required.
Also, If I have to wait for the next scheduled Detect time for it to install the remaining updates, I was thinking of changing the detection period to 30mins. Is this advisable or is it likely to cause performance issues?
    Thanks

It could be "by design"; not all patches can be enforced with deadlines. It would help to know the specific updates.
But here's the dark side of using these deadlines -- it could also be that the files were not yet downloaded for those updates, so the clients did not have the updates downloaded to install at the deadline. Now here's what would happen in that scenario:
When the files do become available, the clients will download them immediately, install them immediately, and reboot immediately. Maybe okay for desktops/notebooks, but probably not particularly desirable for servers.
Ergo, to be blunt, deadlines should not be used as an installation management methodology. Use a *Scheduled Installation* event for that purpose. Deadlines are a tool to deal with "human behavior" issues. :-)
Also, If I have to wait for the next scheduled Detect time for it to install the remaining updates, I was thinking of changing the detection period to 30mins. Is this advisable or is it likely to cause performance issues?
You can only define the detection interval by number of hours, and setting it to one hour is problematic unto itself. Setting it to 2 hours is the minimum I recommend. It won't cause any performance issues, but as noted above, it will invoke an unpredictable
reboot of the server(s) if they discover an expired deadlined approval available for installation.

  • Desktop Software Crashes While Syncing... after initial reboot

This not my phone, I only have to make it work here in the office.
    Device:  Tour 9630
    Carrier:  Sprint
    OS:  Windows 7 Enterprise, 32-bit
    Email:  Outlook 2010, 32-bit
I can install the desktop software and get the phone to sync with Outlook Calendar and Address book just fine.
I can then sync and sync and sync all day... until I reboot the PC.
Then when I sync the desktop software will begin crashing at some point during the sync.  Sometimes during the address book sync, sometimes during the calendar sync, and sometimes immeadiately.
Now if I close and restart the desktop manager and try again, it might work, it might not.
I'm not sure why it would sync fine right after setup but after reboot I have problems.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Hey theknight571,
    Welcome to the forums.
Try doing a clean uninstall of the BlackBerry Desktop Software. Then reinstall it in an admin account on the PC. http://bbry.lv/rbGsYK Once this is completed configure and try to sync again to see if you have the same issue.

  • Snow leopard clean install stuck (Hard Drive upgrade)

HELP!!!...I have a mid-2009 15" MacBook Pro with a 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor.  I currently have OS X Lion on it and running great.  My problem is that I'm trying to upgrade my hard drive from the stock 250GB to a 500GB that I just purchased.  I learned to do that I needed to put the new drive into the Mac and then restart my computer booting from the Snow Leopard discs that came with my computer.  I did that...got into the process, and before hitting the install button opened up the disk utility to format and correctly partition the new drive.  Once the drive was ready I began installation of SL. Installation progressed to about 25% then stuck.  I even waited a good hour to see if it would continue...all to no avail.  I went through this process three times and each time the same thing.  Any ideas???  I feel like this should be a fairly simple procedure.

You have a bad sector on the drive, what you need to do is this:
(clean the bottom of the 10.6 disk with a bit of rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth, polish to a shine.)
1: rebooting holding the c key off the 10.6 installer disk
2: select disk utility and partition tab
3: 1 partition, option: GUID, format OS X Extended journaled and click Apply.
4: next click Erase> Security Option> Zero All Data (wait apx 1 hour per 500GB)
If that finishes, then your drive should be fine, if not, it's defective and you need to send it back.
Writting Zero's to the disk allows the driver to map off any bad sectors
5: Reinstall 10.6 like you tried, then update to 10.6.8, then install all programs and last return files from backup, in that order for good performance.

  • Lion clean install stuck at loading installation information

I have a 13" Core2duo MacBook Pro with Lion installed through the Appstore. I recently upgraded my RAM and hard drive at an apple service center. Before upgrading i created a recovery USB disc using the recovery assistant app.
But now when I try to use that disc to install the OS it gets stuck forever at "Loading Installation Information" screen.
I get the same effect even if connect my old hard drive and boot into its recovery HD.
My Snow leapord DVD is in my other house in a different city.
The support center has refused to help me on this.
    Please help me.

    Drive Preparation
    1.  Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
If you can, boot from your old drive. After you startup clone the old drive to the new one:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Source means the external old drive. Destination means the internal new drive.

  • Bootcamp install hangs after initial restart

Am using 10.9 and trying to make a Windows 7 bootcamp partition.  In bootcamp, I had it make the Windows install USB (option one), skipped option 2 this time since every time i have it try to download the support software it fails, and did option 3 to partition the drive for Windows, giving me a bootcamp volume now.  After the partitioning, it restarts, then just sits at the gray screen  you get when the Mac starts up.
Any ideas what might be happening or how I can see what's going on?

I honestly don't know but it can't do any harm having them there. You will need them anyway.
Several people have reported that the download fails for various reasons but they seem to get them eventually. Downloading through Bootcamp also ensures you get the correct drivers for your Mac.

  • Clean install stuck on apple but target boots...

    Hey gents,
So I have two macs, one of which is a 4 month old 15" macbook pro that I just reinstalled snow leopard onto. It will boot via Target Disk mode just fine, in fact im on it right now via my iMac.
The problem is when I boot up off its OWN drive, just sits on the apple logo. Any ideas??
    Austen

I tried that, it wont boot to CD either, it just hangs on apple logo a well, but in target disk mode it runs very fast and is installed properly.
I reinstalled to put a clean image on there, the company I work for had previously loaded a lot of stuff on there I didn't want/need.

  • Clean install - stuck in loop

I'm trying to install Lion from a DVD.
Booted up from the DVD, formated my hard drive to Mac OS Extended (journaled), then clicked on the install Lion. All was going fine, started the installation then restarted. This is where the problems began. It restarts to the screen select your language, then I'm back to the same screen as I started with the four options - time machine, reinstall lion, online help and disk utility.
If I try to install lion from here, it shows my disk is locked. I've looked at verifying and repairing my disk but it's all fine. I can't verify/repair the disk permission though as this is greyed out. Where am I supposed to go from here? Thanx in advance for any help.

VK said for locked HDs and volumes at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2329689
    sudo chflags 0 /volumes/*
    sudo chmod a+rx /volumes/*
You can run those commands from the install disc using the Terminal.

  • Installing Jabber after initial iChat setup

When I first opened iChat, I chose not to use or download the Jabber application, but I did choose Bonjour. No I think I want Jabber. Do I need Jabber to chat with people on anything other than iChat (like AIM, yahoo, MSN, etc.)? Is there a way to go in now and choose Jabber through iChat (system preferences, etc.) so I can have it showing in my accounts? My current accounts showing are iChat and Bonjour. I want to have Jabber too. FYI, I'm computer literate, but I am new to Macs (2 months now) so...help.
    Thanks,
    Ken David
    San Diego

    Hi,
Effectively iChat is an AIM and Jabber Client and has the Ability to chat over Bonjour as well.
If you did not Select JAbber and enter an ID at the Start Up Screen Stage this is no problem.
Once you have a Jabber ID then just open iChat > Preferences > Accounts and select the Add Button at the bottom of the list.
From there you will be asked to choose Jabber or AIM/@mac
Choose the Jabber option and fill in the details you have.
For Further info or at least guidance go a see the first three links here
    http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page5.html
The first is how to Add a Jabber ID.
The Second is how to Add an ID that has Transports (needed to talk to the MSN or Yahoo or other service)
The third is a list of servers and their capabilities.
There is more info on other applications if you are looking to Video chat further down the same page.

  • Accepting ilife before or after the clean install of ML

    Hi
I know this seams strange but here is the situation, I am getting cMBP and will swap the HD with SSD, I am new to MAC and will follow these steps:
    Setup the new Mac
Login with Apple ID and download the ML, to make bootable drive for clean install
Swap the HDD with the SSD
Erase the new SSD and install the ML
Now here comes the strange title, which is better: to accept the iLife after the initial setup before the clean install or after the clean install? I've heard of some users loosing their preinstalled iLife after clean install of ML.
Sorry for long post and thanks in advance.

I'd do it after you install the SSD drive and install ML on it.  That way you only have to download and install once.

  • Leopard hangs starting /usr/sbin/ocspd after both upgrade and clean install

I have a clean SuperDuper backup, so I can always go back to Tiger, but since I've paid for Leopard, it sure would be nice to run it!
I've got a MacBookPro with 4GB of RAM that's only a few months old. It has been happily running 10.4.10.
Earlier today, I tried an Upgrade to Leopard, which appeared to work, though the system would not boot. The gray screen with the Apple logo and the spinner appears, and then the spinner stops. Powering off and restarting hangs at the same place. Booting off the external drive properly boots Tiger and mounts the internal drive on the Tiger desktop, so the internal drive appears to be fine. Disk Utility says it's fine. It just hangs.
Since I have a perfect bootable backup, I go for the clean install. This first appears to work, and lets me boot Leopard. I restore Documents and Music and begin to install apps, and I notice that some apps appear to be hung. After installing each app, I run it, enter whatever license information is required and update to the latest rev, and quit it. At some point I realized that the last few apps I'd quit are still running. A quick check of top reveals that none of them are chewing up a lot of CPU, but when I quit top, I can't get back to a shell prompt, either. Opening a new Terminal tab doesn't get me to a prompt, either. I finally hold down the power key to reboot.
It hangs at the same gray screen. Disk Utility still says the disk is clean.
I use Command-V to boot in verbose mode, and I note that the last line that appears is:
    /usr/sbin/ocspd[86]: starting
I've rebooted several times, and that's always the last line that displays. Apparently something has scrambled ocspd?
I'm going to try another clean install, and avoid GlowWorm FW Lite this time around. I'd installed a bunch of apps, but I think that was the first one to hang on me.
Anyone else with similar experiences? I've never had trouble with OSX upgrades before, so I'm still kinda in shock about this.

I restarted in Safe Mode (hold down shift), which did start!
I then removed GlowWorm 1.5.3beta by simpy dragging it to the trash (couldn't find an uninstaller anywhere).
Now when I boot, it still hangs, but ocspd is no longer the last message displayed. Instead, I get 'Login Windows Application Started' last sometimes, and mds complaining that there was an unclean shutdown of /.Spotlight-V100/long/path/name sometimes.
I'm trying Safe Boot again, but I'm not sure what else to try to remove! I think I'm back to Clean Install again after all.

  • Can't do a complete clean install (defective hard drive?)

    Hello
    I picked up a used G4 Quicksilver 733 mhz.
I knew that I would need a retail OS 9.2 bootable install disc, to do a fresh install, so I picked one up.
But it appeared as though the prior owner did not do a proper erase of the old hard drive, because before I tried a new install, upon boot up, I always recieved a stalled start up of OS 9.2
Anyway, I attempted a new install:
Pressing the C Prompt Starts OS 9.2 and you will see the Prompt "Starting Up"
I then opened Disk Utility, and choose the option for 'Drive Set Up'
I then choose 'Initialize', and received the option: "Initializing will destroy all data on the following volumes"
I also customized the initialization, and choose "Mac OS Extended" (but I believe this may have already been the defaulted option?)
I then selected the only HD, (the original existing 40 Gig HD), and initialized it successfully
Next there was the option for "Clean Install"
I choose this, and customized the install unchecking "Airport" (as this computer will run on a wired router)
The install appears to complete itself and I choose the option: 'Quit'
At this point when I try to eject the disc, I continually recieve the prompt "The start up disc cannot be removed from the desktop because it contains the active system software."
Then when I shut the system down, and reboot, the same original problem occurs whereby the system boot up STALLS about 1/4 of the way into the operating system.
This leads me to believe that either the old hard drive was not erased properly, or it is defective.
Any other thoughts would be appreciated?
    Thanx
    Mike

As eww stated, you can't eject an OS Installer disc while it's running the computer. One can also eject a disc at startup, after the chime by pressing the CD drive tray button. Or if you have it, the eject button on your keyboard. But the mouse trick is a very good one. The point is, all methods are at startup, right after the chime.
Did you run Disk First Aid? If not, do so.
Also, you might open the case and reset the CUDA. It's a button next to the PRAM battery. Touch the power supply case; don't move about after doing so; or wear a static wrist band. Be careful...press the CUDA button once...careful in that you need to position yourself so that you press it once and not let your finger slip off. Don't touch anything else while doing so. Hold it down for 8-10 seconds.
A bad PRAM battery could also be a culprit. "operator headgap" has very good prices on batteries. I would suspect other things before assuming the HD is bad. HDD's can last a very long time; 'most' of the time they'll make noises if they're bad, but not all the time.
After the clean install and after you press Quit, choose Restart from the drop-down menu. Then you may eject the Installer disc and hopefully OS 9 will start up. If not, please let us know.
    HTH!

  • Clean install of OS X Lion went from 7GB to 16GB, is this expected?

    Hi,
I'm trying to see if others have experienced this as well?
The whole OS only occupied 7GB (right after install) and after a reboot it reads 16GB.
Is this expected behavior to occupy 2X the storage space?
What is the extra ~9GB being used for?
    Details:
Upgraded from Snow Leopard to OS X Lion:
Did a Clean Install of OS X Lion (10.7.4) on a new external Hard Drive (1TB) - to be swapped later as my new Internal Drive.
    Get Info reads ~7GB
Then I rebooted the MBP and doing a Get Info again, now it reads 16GB!
Tried searching for explanations, but no luck...
    Is this normal?
How much space does a Clean Installed OS X Lion occupy? 7GB, 16GB?
    Thanks for any feedback.
