Clean install to solve buggy system?

Hello,
My MacBook Pro Retina has been buggy for quite a while. I was hoping the new OS would smooth things out, but I've noticed additional issues. For example, the folders in my finder are blurry and don't open, and my shortcut folders in the left pane are empty; I can only get into my folders via spotlight. Another bug I've noticed is that my desktop icons move around on their own.
I have two questions: (1) Is performing a clean install a potential way to smooth this out? (2) Will restoring my computer from a time machine backup simply reintroduce these buggy issues back into the system?

Try restoring OS X from your recovery disk.
That, at least, should eliminate the operating system as a source of your problems.
You should also consider deleting third party software that affects the operating system.

10.3 clean install hangs on "Base System Part 2"

I just recently acquired a Power Macintosh G3 B&W revision 2 with a 400MHz PPC G3, pretty much bone stock except that I've upped the RAM to 448MB using some old pulls that I had lying around from previous iMac upgrades. The factory 8.6 install recognized the RAM, so I went ahead and ran the latest firmware updater from Apple. The updater said I was already running the latest firmware, so I proceeded with wiping the HD and preparing to install 10.3 from the retail install discs. I can repartition and erase the HD, choose that HD as the installation drive, and customize the install in order to remove things that I won't be needing/using like additional language translations and Internet Explorer. The installer hangs though almost immediately; it makes it through preparing "Base System Part 1" but hangs as soon as it begins preparing "Base System Part 2". I thought perhaps that the HD was in bad shape since it is 10 years old, so I pulled that drive and installed an extra 40GB Maxtor that I had lying around (I also have an extra 10GB WD if all else fails) with the exact same results. Everything seems to work fine except for the installer hanging. I was able to get a partially functional 9.1 install using my iBook's backup disc (which amazed me greatly considering that it shouldn't have worked at all), but seeing as how that disc was made for the iBook, the install is lacking quite a bit of functionality (can't update to 9.2 and then 9.2.2 for example); besides, I'd rather have OS X anyway. My long term goal is to install 10.3 and then update to 10.4 and eventually 10.4.11 (I have a lot of other hardware upgrades in mind, but I can't start in on those until I have the system booting into 10.3 first / not about to spend money until I have a working system ;] ).
I've tried to be as specific as possible, but if I need to clarify anything, please let me know. As my details state, I also have an iBook FW SE happily running 10.4.11 and a MacBook White with the latest and greatest. I'm not very technically inclined, but I can handle even the most difficult of upgrades (that HD in my iBook was NOT easy to get to, but it sure was fun!). Any help is better than where I am right now. I'd really like to install directly onto the machine, but I do have the necessary hardware to install from my iBook to an external HD and then relocate that drive to the B&W.

Actually, this is in fact the revision 2 system with the "402" chip, which is why I was very excited to end up with this machine. From what I've been able to gather since this B&W found its new home with me, the whole B&W line was kind of flaky all around (with the non-402s being even more flaky).
- Update - I used an external firewire enclosure to install 10.3 on the original 6GB drive courtesy of my iBook FW SE. I swapped the 6GB drive back in and removed the 40GB that I had been testing in there, so the system is stock except for the RAM, which I may try reducing to Panther's minimum tomorrow just to remove all variables. I get the Apple logo on the screen, but it immediately changes to the "circle with a line through it"; almost makes me think it's a firmware problem, but the updater indicated that the firmware was already up to date. I may also try to get 9.1 back on there again tomorrow and just double check the firmware again.
Incidentally, is there an easy way of figuring out what firmware version the system is currently running without having an OS installed? I know on the iBook you can hold down [command]-[option]-[O]-[F] to get into open firmware, but I haven't tried it on this machine yet, nor do I know how to check the version number from there. I may end up putting in separate IDE card in the end, but I would much rather use the onboard; it would save a few bucks in the end, and for my purposes the performance penalty won't make much difference (i'm mostly setting it up as a backup computer right now for basic web-browsing and whatnot / nothing fancy right now, just the basics).
Now after re-reading your post though, it occurs to me that I don't have a solid three-drive shelf :P. I have two plates (one toward the front of the system and one in the middle) meant to hold SCSI drives, and one two-drive bracket toward the rear of the machine designed to hold either a SCSI drive or up to two IDE drives (although the upper portion is a little too wide to actually mount an IDE drive appropriately). It does have the IDE controller chip marked as "402" and a manufacture date in LATE 1999. What gets me is that it hangs on the Panther install while running stock and won't boot into Panther even after it has been forced onto the stock hard drive.
You do have me thinking though, which is certainly the first step to figuring it out. If I do end up having to put in a separate IDE controller, can the B&W boot from that? Probably a silly question I know, but from what I understand, it can't boot from a hard disk on it's secondary controller although it can boot from the optical drive there :P, which indicates to me a VERY finicky computer. lol

Lenovo pre-load OS vs. clean install + System Update

Hi all, just wondering what the conventional wisdom is these days: stick with the Lenovo pre-load OS or perform a clean install and then use System Update to add whichever drivers seem worth adding.
I've traditionally performed clean installs on new computers, but I'd be happy to skip the chore if it's not all that beneficial anymore.

Unable to reactivate Windows 7 after clean install - help!

Hi,
Yesterday I formatted my C:\ drive in order to perform a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium. I am unsure of whether I was using 64 or 32 bit. I didn't have an install disc so borrowed a friend's retail Home Premium disc and used my OEM key to install. This didn't work and I am unable to reactivate my copy of Windows 7. Having read some other forum posts it would seem that I should have made a backup before formatting my hard drive, but it's too late now.
How can I successfuly reactivate my OEM copy of Windows 7? I am reinstalling on the same exact PC so believe that this should be possible.

Clean Install but no Library Files

What I meant by this is I would like to do a clean install of an operating system (possibly Mavericks) to a new external drive, then using Migration Assistant or some other means to bring over my User folder minus the Library which I assume contains corrupted files accumulated over the last 15 years. I would then reinstall 3rd party applications and those from Apple that are not installed with the OS.
After testing the result, I would then erase my internal hard drive and clone the external drive to the internal drive. Does this sound reasonable?
I currently have 2 backups, a Time Machine and a clone, one of which would be used for the migration.

Easier said than done. I have had intermittent problems with the Finder and other Apple apps (Safari, etc) that I have not been able to resolve. For example, when using the Search box at the top of a Finder window, after entering several characters, the Finder freezes requiring me to relaunch the Finder. Clean Install of Mavericks on new SSD - Final Question

I am looking for some help installing a new SSD into my mid-2010 Macbook Pro. I have the 15 inch with i5 and 4GB of RAM. last week I upgraded to 8GB of RAM, purchased from Crucial, and am about to install a MX100 512GB SSD also purchased from Crucial. I have read about the issues with third party drives in Yosemite and because of this I will keep Mavericks until I learn more.
My goal has been to get the new SSD into the computer and treat it like a brand new computer completely clean. This I learned was considered a "Clean InstalI". I am not very good with computers and sometimes the discussions I've read on the internet can generalize things and not define each step like a complete novice like me would need. So I have done a lot of research and below have a step by step guide on how I intend to do a clean install of the operating system onto my new SSD. I am looking for validation that this is correct or any steps I need to adjust.
I had asked a question about 2 months ago that lead me into the direction of doing the clean install. Drew helped out quite a bit and got me started on researching what I need to do for this clean install. There were some comments I had a question with. His notes are in italics and my questions are in bold.
During install use Setup Assistant (it's basically the same as Migration Assistant).
Connect the old HD (Can I connect to my external HD that backed up my old HD via Time Machine?) & choose the option to migrate the User account (leave the applications & other data disabled). (what happens if I opt to not do this step, not migrating User account information, what would be the Pros / Cons... another basic question I guess would be what exactly is in these User Accounts... anything that if I did not migrate over would give me issues?)
When completed you will have the same user on the new disk.
The Applications are left on the old disk, it's better to reinstall them in my opinion.

My Step by Step guide that if confirmed on here I will move forward with! Very excited and hope I got this correct.
Create bootable MAC OS X Mavericks USB Flash Drive
App Store - Download OS X Mavericks from PurchasesDone
Now found in the Applications folder (leave right there)
Plug in USB Flash drive (minimum 8gb)
Go to UtilitiesLaunch Disc Utility
Find USB Flash Drive on left hand side
Format this drive
Click on Erase (tab towards top)
Format: Mac OS Etended (Journaled)
Name: “installMavericks”
Click Erase button at bottom
Launch Terminal
Copy and paste text below. replace the red “Untitled” with the name of the USB drive (installMavericks) - case sensitive and keep the space after installMavericks
click enter - put in password
will take approx 20-30 minutes
If message says Done I now have a USB drive with Mac OS X Mavericks right on itwhat happens if there is an issue?

Upgrade HD to SSD
I have backed up my current HD on an external 1TB drive via Time MachineI plan to do a Fresh/Clean install of the Mac OS Mavericks. I will individually bring over songs, pictures, movies, documents etc from the external HD that has the last x amount of my Time Machine Backups of current/soon to be old HD
Open Macbook Case
loosen two screws, pull the entire strip out. The screws do not come out, only loosen
Pull hard drive out with the clear strip of (paper?)
careful, still connected to SATA cable
once removed - use TORX screw driver to remove the 4 screws on the Hard drive and transfer them into the same spot on the SSD
connect SSD to the SATA connector
put the SSD back into its bay by lining up the 4 screws to the locations within the bay
add back the strip that had the two screws from earlier. tighten screws
put case back on.
Plug in USB into computer and turn on computer
Will boot to the Mac OS Utilities
go to “Disc Utility”Find SSD on the left
go to Erase Tab to repartition
Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Name: example “new SSD”
click erase at the bottom
Exit out of Disc Utility
go to “Reinstall OS X”Click continue
go through the screens and menus… (not sure what happens here) assuming this is loading the OS Mavericks from the USB to new SSD
after this step is the installation complete?
what will be on the new SSD?
iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, Garage Band, QuickTime player etcwill these need to be re-downloaded from the App store etc
Logic Pro X, Toontracks, Fluenz etc.these I need to re-download from the sites using serial keys etc. (I have decided to just buy the new Logic Pro X so that I can do the clean install and leave my old Logic Express behind where I have lost the disc that came with it)
From here I can connect my external 1TB drive that had my previous HD backed up on it and pick and choose what songs, movies, pictures, documents etc that I want to drag onto my new SSD

Your link makes very interesting reading. One thing that jumps out is how an old HD's installation and Time Machine are equated. Time Machine is a remarkable system, simple on the outside and complex under the hood (this is the fundamental resource on the subject, created by a Community member who is sorely missed). But it doesn't play well with certain types of files (virtual machine files for running Windows, etc., on a Mac for example) and has, in my experience at least, lost some files after briefly saving them. Your old HD, on the other hand, is both complete and current, making it a better source IMHO to migrate from.
The point about older software no longer being compatible is well taken, but I tend to keep older versions long after newer versions appear and I've been surprised at how well they continue to function after the publisher insists they're no longer supported by a newer OS (and are sometimes better than what replaces them). And in the case of commercial software, associated files are often sprinkled far and wide, perhaps to prevent easy pirating. Moreover, while keeping track of serial numbers is always a good idea, many publishers limit the number of installations and entering the S/N over again usually involves the program phoning home to check on the installation count so far. Cloning avoids that more effectively than migrating.

X100E clean install of Windows 7

I got an X100E nearly a year ago and have never been happy with all the extra 'junk' software that came pre-installed with it. Sure there are a few useful items, but like many business users, I'd much prefer a clean installation of Windows so I could install the programs I've found from experience work well.
I've currently got a problem that's going to require reinstalling from the CD that Lenovo's sending me and this would be an ideal time to get the clean install I need. The problem is, this will be an image for the entire drive that will leave the machine in the state in which it shipped originally including all the unwanted bloatware.
It's not really feasible to uninstall all the unwanted stuff - I tried this several times soon after getting the machine and had serious problems. Not all of the stuff is uninstallable and even the items that do uninstall don't do so properly. After resetting to factory two or three times I gave up.
How can I get the clean installation I'm looking for? I can see from the support pages that this isn't an unusual requirement and all of the extras are available for download and installation if needed so where can I find details of how to do a clean install?

Even though it looks like it's much more involved using ABR, most of the procedure is just good practice even if you're not using ABR (backup etc.). Anyway, I thought I'd give it a try last night as I'm sure going to use this again so best to get familiar.
Actually, I did download the W7 Beta file, what I meant was that the instructions are for Vista - same with the guides for Lenovo. Also they are several years old. This shouldn't be a problem, though as it's mostly just stepping through the installation procedure. However, the X100e doesn't have an optical drive and I'm not sure how to get 'round this (share a drive on another PC or make a bootable USB drive and force the X100e to boot from it?). Anyway, I thought I'd go through the preparation steps, but then I had a number of problems:
1. First I went to the Lenovo site to manually download the drivers as listed in the procedure, but couldn't find the chipset drivers for the mobo. Not a disaster as I have a backup of the latest drivers from running Driver Genius backup (also all the old ones replaced by it), but I'd still like to know where to find it on the Lenovo site. There's also mention of a 'Turbo Memory Driver' and a 'Matrix Storage Manager Driver', but since I could see no drivers of this type listed, I assume it's not relevant to this machine.
2. I then tried to delete the hidden partition following the steps in Hypertrophy's Diskpart Guide, but at the final step "delete partition override" I got a message saying the action couldn't be performed. The guide assumes this will work and gives no further details of what to do if it doesn't. I was logged on to the proper Windows 'administrator' account and also tried running it '..as administrator', but just got the same result. There's also a message at the start of this article saying "Make sure you have backed up your OEM keycode before deleting the hidden partition." What's the OEM keycode? Surely not the activation key as the guides say to delete the hidden partition BEFORE running the ABR utility. Does it just mean to write it down first or is the OEM keycode something else?
3. Lastly I tried to run the ABR utility itself (downloaded the ABRbeta.exe) file, but when I ran this I got this message "Can not open file 'L:\Downloads\ABR Beta\ABRbeta.exe' as archive". At this point I gave up, but tried again this morning on a different machine and got the same result. However, downloading it again today it works fine so at least that's one problem solved!
All I need now is a way to delete the hidden partition (formatting the whole drive is fine as there's nothing of value that hasn't been backed up) and a method of installing Windows, either from DVD, bootable USB drive or from a mounted image across the LAN.
You've already been very helpful and I can't thank you enough, but if you could give me some help with these problems and the earlier questions regarding drivers, I might have a chance of getting this job done.

Clean Install? What is required? Macbook shutdowns?

I am experiencing these annoying MB shutdowns, all the time, and have tried EVERYTHING possible to reset and change, like the RAM sticks, the PMU, the PRAM, firmware, and many other things. I am going to try a clean install, but first of all, how do I do this, and do I need to back up my data? I have tried putting my Mac HD onto my firewire HD but my MB shuts down in the process. What is the deal? How do I do this?

Yes, if you do an erase andinstall it will wipe your HD then re-install everything, so you will need to backup your data or it will be lost.
You cannot simply copy over your HD to an external FW drive. If you want to get everything, you will need to clone the HD using a tool like SuperDuper but if your Mac will not stay on long enough to make the copy all you can do it drag and drop data in chunks that are small enough in an effort to get them copies over before the next shutdown.
I doubt a clean install will solve the problem, but it is still worth a shot. Replacement seems to be the way to go.

40gb free space appeared after clean install of Mac OS X and time machine restore? What happened?

Recently, my computer had a display problem, and I brought it in to the Apple store to get it fixed. When they returned it, they had replaced not only the display but also the logic board, and the hard drive, and they did a clean install of the operating system. After OS X was clean installed onto my computer, I restored my files from Time Machine, but my hard drive now shows about 40 gigs more free space than I had before, when I originally brought my computer in. All my files seem to be in place. What am I missing? I was guessing that the cache of my web browsers have been cleared... But 40 Gigs seems like a lot of space to recover solely through clearing the web cache. Any ideas?

Hi, one question & one suggestion...
What possible things are connected at home but not at the store, inlude every cable, etc.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

HT1379 problems of clean install

Hey guys, I basically tried everything I can to actually have a clean install for this new system but I have found this problem below:
As we all prob know, in order to clean install, you have to acess disk utility to format the disk and then reinstall the system.
But I found out its not possible for me to click/select disk utility on my screen, I tried to start my computer by booting from DVD (I burned a lion DVD as well as a mountain lion dvd), I also tried to just hold option and get into recovery hd mode, as well as reboot from Mountain Lion USB, when I get into "DISK UTILITIES" as you can see the picture, I can not click "continue", as the pic shows here, I cant click continue, I tried to reinstall the system many times and It always come out the same.
I was wondering if anyone of you know the problem is
or any other way to clean install (or format the entire disk)?

iTunes --> iPod was designed as a "one-way transfer". You can't use iTunes alone to take tracks from your iPod and put them back into an empty iPod library.
Hopefully you made a backup of your iTunes library before you did your Erase & Install. You can then restore your iTunes library from your backup.
If you don't have a backup... you'll need to use some type of third-party software such as iPodRip to copy your tracks back to iTunes from your iPod. This is not a practice that is supported by Apple, and there is always a risk involved with doing this. Hopefully it will work for you.

How to reload site after clean install...

I recently did a clean-install of my operating system to start my computer from fresh all over again. Before I did that, I saved my website onto my idisk. How do I load this back into my iWeb so I can continue updating and reuse my site. Its still published on the web but I cant update it without uploading the files somehow into iWeb

There's a an easy waty to have multiple sites and multiple domain files.
1 - name the current domain file for the site it contains.
2 - launch iWeb and it will open a new, empty domain file and that will be named domain.sites. Once you've created and saved your second site, close iWeb and rename the new domain.sites file for the site inside.
3 - take the iWeb folder that holds both .sites files and either drag it to the Dock or into the source pane of a finder window. Now you have easy access to the files and can open them by clicking on them in the Dock or the source pane of a Finder window.
This method will require you to click on the domain file to open it rather than just launching iWeb.
Another method is to use iWebSites. I use iWebSites to manage over 75 individual sites. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
If you have multiple sites in one domain file here's the workflow I used to split them into individual site files with iWebSites. Be sure to make a backup copy of your original Domain.sites files before starting the splitting process and move it to another location on your HD until you're satisfied the separation process is completed and what you want.
This lets me edit several sites and only republish the one I want. This, IMO, is a better for managing a lot of individual sites. For just two the first method would probably be easier to set up and use.

AddressBook contacts lost after clean install, typical solutions don't work

After a clean install, I can't access any of my contacts, even after replacing ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook with the back up.
All my iApps were behaving strangely. iCal wouldn't open. Safari would freeze when you typed in a domain name. Mail would freeze whenever you sent an attachment. Sometimes the whole system would freeze - not even a spinning ball. Oddly enough, AddressBook was working fine. In any case, I opted to do a clean install to fix this.
Before doing a clean install, I used Retrospect to duplicate my entire PowerBook harddrive onto an external harddrive, which ran with several execution errors, none of which were apparently related to AddressBook (none of the files in ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook, none of the com.addressbook preferences, etc.).
After doing my clean install, all the problems mentioned above were fixed. However, a new problem was created: all of my AddressBook contacts were gone. So I tried replacing ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook on my PowerBook with the copy on the external drive, making sure all iApps were closed, as explained here. No change. I repaired permissions, deleted AddressBook's preferences, logged out, tried again. No change. I replaced AddressBook's preferences on with the preferences on the external, no change.
I think one possible solution would be to back up my current data (which has some minor modifications to the back-up before the clean install), reinstall the old system, open AddressBook, export the files, reinstall the current data, and import the contacts from AddressBook. However, I'd like to avoid this step if possible. Moreover, I'm not even sure if that will work.
I have the AddressBook data sitting on the external drive. Does anyone have any idea about how to get that data back into AddressBook - including pictures - without doing what I just mentioned? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My computer crashed and i have to do a clean install of the operating system (win xp pro). And lost all my previous bookmarks. I was running firefox 3.6. Is there a way to recover my bookmarks?

I need to do a clean install of my operating system. How do I KNOW that I've done a good enough back up so that I won't have lost anything?

So...I'll have everything? I was just checking. I have nothing chosen as an exclusion from Time Machine. My finder is not doing well, and Apple recommended that I do a clean install, and then re-install all my applications from their original disks slowly to see if the problem returns. I don't want to embark on this and discover that it didn't work or that I've overlooked something and that I've lost some of my stuff.

I've tried to eliminate system errors by performing a clean install of ML. What's the best way to set up my iMac for a singlet user?

One of my main goals is to be able to run a Windows application on my iMac, purchased in July, 2012, with the Intel 2.5Ghz i5, 4GB RAM, 500GB hard drive. At first I installed Boot Camp and then Win 7, then the application I need to run, and I don't recall having problems. But I tired of the required reboot each time and got greedy and needy - so I installed VMWare Fusion, only to be told that the W7 software I use won't work with Fusion, but it will with Parallels! So, I was able to get Parallels at a discount (because I had Fusion), and decided I would import Boot Camp into Parallels.
Then the problems began. I suspect I did something I shouldn't have during this process, but to shorten the story I did a clean install of ML, set up iCloud, and monitored Console for problems. And problems there were - lots of them, and they all seemed to reference iCloud in some way. Since I have the ML installer on a thumb drive I thought I'd see what happened if I did another clean install, but this time I'd ignore iCould altogether (yes, I have everything backed up to mypcback.com) and proceeded. As before, the errors streamed down Console's face as if it were my own. I've run OnyX, which seemed to help, but many of the issues persist. I'm at a loss as how to proceed other than invoke Apple Support, which, BTW, is not covered under Warranty.
I need to have a stable ML platform before I start using W7 and refuse to believe that the OSX is "just buggy." Can someone help. I have no other iDevices that need to be synced, and really don't see the need to set up iCloud. Noone else than I use the iMac. It should be pretty simple to create a stable OSX so I can go where I need to go. I realize 4GB is not a lot of memory and will look into that. For the moment, I can stip down Win 7, and OSX for that matter, to free up memory. I didn't want to included a bunch of log files, but I will if someone thinks that it would be helpful.

This DNS change is only the lastest manifestation of what seems like an endless list. Can anybody give me some direction before I have to pay Apple to fix what I think they broke themselvesa?!? BTW, I am not a tech. Thanking everyone who read this and especially to anyone who can help.

Linc, thanks for the tips. I knew you'd have a good method. I asked for it because I have learned of some of the myths about OSX and it's need (or lack thereof) to be scrubbed, rinsed, and blown dry; suckering folks into buying all manner of utilities to keep your Mac spiffy at all times, when in fact it rarely needs any intervention at all because of its Unix background. In fact, I rarely shut mine down and I've learned that the system is actually designed to be left running under most circumstances.
To keep your data secure the three most important things to know is backup, backup, backup. I use a third-party, cloud-based back-up system. It can automatically make backups every hour if that's what I want and I can supplement that anytime by simply dropping a file into the application's desktop interface.
Since I last posted my Mac has been running smoothly and I've been able to install Parallels and Windows 7, as well as the VantagePoint software I mentioned. Though it crashed once this morning and I submit one line from the log file:
