Clean install transferred over contact and bookmarks

Here is my situation:
I installed Mountain Lion on top of my active system (Snow Lep, Lion). I then encountered some issues with the new Messages ap and think I made things worst by trying to troubleshoot myself. Then I decided, what the **** so I did a clean install of Mountain Lion. My first question is, when I went into Disk Utility to wipe my HD, the process took a matter of seconds. Its seems to me if I were to wipe clean my HD, this process would take hours, not seconds. Secondly, after I installed a fresh copy of Mountain Lion, my contacts and Safari bookmarks transferred over to this fresh install. I was expecting ALL my data to be wiped clean much like a spanking new system?? One possibility is ICloud which I signed up for prior to the clean install (could ICoud have imported the new bookmarks and contacts?) Could I have messed up and installed a new copy of Mountain Lion on top of the old one like maybe from a partition.
I apoligize for these "basic" type questions but I am not too familiar with this OS and such.
Thanks for any help you may provide.

Just find the way.
I go gues account in my computer so i export bookmarks and email them to myself.
Then i turn off safari syncing in my iphone and macbook air.
Then i import bookmarks that i eamil to myself previously from guest account so they as come from factory.Next i switch safari sync in icloud preferences in computer so it ask me to merge and i accept.
After delete the old bookmarks and leave only the ones i import so it looks as factory i wait a little bit to let icloud sync bookmarks and switch on safari sync in my iphone and yea it show only the ones i import..
So is a way to reset bookmarks in safari but you need swith off icloud sync in all your devices and the choose a master device and switch it on again.
It looks like it merger the data in that master and icloud so you need to delete the one you don't want and then switch on in other device to sync.

• Issue with contacts and bookmarks

My wife and I each just purchased our own iphone but share a computer. After the first sync, we noticed that my contacts (contacts, e-mail addresses, and bookmarks were transferred to her phone and vice versa. Why did this happen? How can we stop it from happening in the future? Is there an easy way to remove the unwanted contacts from each phone?

You're welcome.
You can create another computer login account for wife. She can enter her contacts only in the supported address book application with her login account, and have her own bookmarks with the supported browser for syncing bookmarks. She can sync iTunes content and transfer photos when logged in to your computer login account, and sync contacts and bookmarks only when logged in to her computer login account.
If the supported address book application supports creating groups of contacts, you can place all your contacts in an address book group or multiple groups, and your wife can place all her contacts in a group.
With the Address Book on a Mac with Groups of contacts, there is an option under the Info tab for my iPhone sync preferences with iTunes to sync selected groups only. If the same is available under the Info tab for the supported address book application on your computer, you can each do the same.
Under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences under the Advanced section, select Contacts for replace info on this iPhone. Select Apply followed by a sync. This would apply if creating and syncing selected groups only is supported with the address book application on your computer. After creating and selecting the group or groups to be synced with your iPhone, do this under the Advanced section for your iPhone sync preferences, and your wife will do the same for her selected group or groups. After this replace option, the contacts with the selected group or groups will be kept synchronized.

• I need to change the apple Id from the previous user into my new user. I bought the phone from my girlfriend at work and didn't wipe it before I transferred all contacts and pictures.

When I try to send text messages or to back up my info to the ICloud, everything seems to be linked to her email address and I can't get rid of it. Do I need to wipe it all out and re-install all my contacts and pictures all over again?

Some MacBook Pro versions cannot be upgraded past 10.6.8; others are maxed out at 10.7.5. newer models can go all the way to 10.10. So it is important to know exactly what version you have--there may be close to 40 variants produced since the MB made its debut in 2006.
You can safely give us a snapshot of your model and its current config that will allow us to deternmmine your model and its upgrade potential, plus show it you have any software that may impede any upgrades. Please download and install this free utility:

Remember that, on leaving OS10.6.8, you lose the ability to run older softare written for older PowerPC Macs (yours in Intel-based). Programs such as Office 2004 will no longer work (min of Office 2008 needed to work on newer OS versions), and AppleWorks will stop working completely

Windows XP Clean Install – What I discovered and the help I need
I previously had a problem with my Laptop dying randomly you can read about it in the thread entitled Computer dies Randomly (Battery also dead) click to view
Before I realised the solutions, I thought that maybe my Laptop had become infected with a Virus and decided it would be prudent to do a clean install of the Windows XP operating system.
Everything went perfectly and thought a clean install was a good opportunity to download the “XP Service Pack 3” SP3 and did so, it seemed very quiet though and that’s when I realised I had no sound…
I downloaded all of the sound drivers I could find on the Lenovo site for 3000 N100 (I knew from previous experience that the “SOUNDMAX” driver is the only one that actually works with this 3000 N100) in order to install this you have to install the Realtek HD audio driver, but in order to install that you have to install some other Driver/Soft that only works with SP1 or SP2 if you try to install it with SP3 it will say that you don’t need the file as your Service pack is newer than the file you want to install, this is understandable as SP3 is not final as of yet (but it’s good to know).
My next problem was that my extra RAM was not detected, this was fixed by updating the BIOS, after installing all of the System updates, PC Doctor, everything I could find for 3000 N100 I decided to rest, I pushed the Lenovo care button and it did not work, I found a hot key driver and installed it but still the Lenovo care button does not work, previously when I pushed this button it would bring up the Lenovo menu but now it’s just a dead button, Does anyone know how to get this button working again?
I am pretty sure that everything else is working fine now, just that button not working is very annoying, is there a set routing of installs you must do to get everything working, i.e. bios 1st audio 2nd system update 3rd etc...
Please help, I hope I have helped you...

Solved!
Go to Solution.

Ok first everything works now... except the Lenovo Care button, I just posted the other stuff cause it might help other members, I have searched the forum for an anwser to this problem but there was only one anwser (suggesting to uninstall the driver restart and re-install it) and it did not result in a working Lenovo Care button...
I don't beleive the Lenovo keyboad drivers are in any way related to the Service pack 3 as they do not use the Service pack files, to back this up I also had the same problem when Service Pack 2 was installed...
The Lenovo Care button works fine on Boot up screen to access the rescue and recovery software (So the mechanics of the button are fine) but once Windows XP loads it is just a dead button, I remember it used to open up the Lenovo Care Start bar, I got it working once in the past but I can't remember what I did, I thought someone here might know the anwser...

• Clean install of Mountain Lion and permissions issue

I'm doing a clean install of Mountain Lion and after the initial install I noticed that all of my disk volumes (and their contents) showed the owner as "Fetching...." (though I still had access because the "staff" group has read/write access.
Doing a search, I learned that this means that the new system doesn't recognize the user id (UID) of these files/folders.
I know why. In my old system, I set up a second administrative user when I was troubleshooting a Snow Leopard problem, and just started using the new user (and eventually deleted the troublesome one).
So, the UID for my Snow Leopard user (which created all these files and folders on my other volumes, including my Time Machine volume) has UID = 502. The new ML user I set up has UID = 501. That's why when booted into ML all the owners are "Fetching..."
The question is how to fix this. I see three options:
1. Don't worry about it, as I have access. But I have read that having the OS constantly trying to figure out the owner of files can be a drag on system speed
2. Use chown to change all the ownership of all my files on the various volumes
3. Set up a new administrative user on ML (that will presumably have UID=502) and delete the other user (with UID = 501)
[And yes, I did try repairing permissions with Disk Utility, but that doesn't affect volumes other than the boot volume, of course]
Thanks to all.

@macjack...
Thanks for your response. I did exactly what you suggested when I set things up. I installed ML, rebooted, and it of course booted into Setup Assistant. I used SA to migrate. The permissions in the User directory and the boot volume were just fine. It's the other volumes (Time Machine, data volumes, backup volumes, etc.) that have the owner showing "Fetching...." and that's because when I installed ML, the first user setup was assigned UID = 501 while all these files/folders were created by a (Snow Leopard) user with UID = 502.

• I did a clean install of snow Leopard and now my iWork 09 will not work. does anyone one know where I can download the version for snow Leopard?

I did a clean install of Snow Leopard and now when I reloaded iWork 09 from my timemachine it will not open anything. any ideas.

iWork '09 is still available from the likes of Amazon.
Your experience is why I never trusted downloaded versions when there's a physical DVD available.
It may be possible to reactivate with your code, but I can't advise you as to how.

• After clean install, all configurations goes and all text flies to the left.

I installed an add-on extension to control popups and malware monitoring. Everything seemed to work, for about a week, and then Firefox began acting up. After working for a few minutes, Firefox looses all configurations, all images disappear, and all the text that is left flies to the left of the screen and stays there. The screen becomes grey and when I move the cursor over the grey area, it turns into a hand from the usual arrow pointer. If I can go to a Bookmarked page it might work (some seem too) or it might just mimic the exact same thing as Firefox. I've done everything I can think of to include, many reinstalls, reboots between reinstalls, clean installs, to searching for everything connected to Firefox has been deleted and then Firefox reinstalled with nothing but the most basic clean install possible. What's left.

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:
Reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.
*Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
*Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
*Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)
Clear the cache and cookies only from websites that cause problems.
"Clear the Cache":
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

• Clean install of Mt. Lion and i cant recover any files from time machine

I did a clean install erasing my hard drive. I have been running time machine to a time capsule for the last 3 years. I tried migration, it wont bring anything over. I tried opening mail then opening time machine and finding a back up point, it wont let me restore. Does anything on a mac ever work. I have been using this thing for 4 years and its always a major ordeal to get anything to do what it is supposed to. I need my old inbox as well as sent emails and have no way to recover them.
Before i did this whole install I backed up the mbox files individually on a usb drive. I can recover the inbox but if i import the sent files, they all have me as the recipient.

• Clean install Mavericks with Mail and Apps?

What is the most efficient method to do a full clean install of Mavericks (once it is released) and then migrate Apple Mail, Applications and Dropbox from my existing Mountain Lion setup on my late 2009 27" iMac?
Thanks
Henry

You probably won't need to do that. As with all previous versions of the MacOS, you will be able to simply install Mavericks over the top of the older OS. All of your applications, folders, documents, internet connection data, stored passwords, cookies, etc. will be left exactly as they were before. Mavericks itself will update any existing system files that need to be updated.
However (as is always advisable with any update of the OS) before attempting to install Mavericks you should first make a complete bootable clone (not a Time Machine backup) of your existing hard drive, to an external drive, and test the clone by booting from it.
That way after you've installed Mavericks, if anything bad happens, you still have a safety net.
Only at that point, if you really want to spend hours doing a completely clean install of Mavericks, re-installing all your applications etc., you can do so by wiping your internal hard drive and then installing from scratch - though I'm wondering why you would want to do that .
You will still have all your stuff on your bootable clone.
If things are really bad and you just hate Mavericks, you can simply start up using the clone and clone the whole external drive back to your internal hard drive - taking you back to exactly where you were before.

• Performed tiger clean install on old pbg4 and no ilife

Hi all. I just performed a clean install on my old pb g4 (titanium) and now have no iphoto, imovie, etc. apps. I don't have a copy of the ilife disc as I've always just received my computers with the apps on them. How do I get these apps without having to buy new ilife 06? I don't have original discs that came with computer as I got it used.
Can I use target disc mode to move apps from my new macbook c2d to old pbg4? Both are running 10.4.8.
Thanks...:)
macbook c2d g4 ibook, graphite ibook, ipod Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The Tiger retail install package does not include iLife which is sold separately or included with the Tiger install package that ships with a new Mac.
The apps included with the Tiger retail install package are listed here.
http://www.apple.com/macosx/techspecs/
Was an iLife version included with the install package that shipped with this Mac when new and if so, which version? If yes, you no longer have the install package for this Mac?
Or did you purchase iLife 05 or 06 separately and no longer have this install disc?
Either way, you are in trouble.
Doubtful the iLife applications on your new MacBook are Universal which is required to run the applications on a PPC Mac. More than likely they are Intel binaries only so will not work on a PPC Mac and regardless, doubtful just moving the applications over this way will work.

• Clean Install of Snow Leopard and Multiple Drives

Greetings,
I want to do a clean install of Snow Leopard because of various issues carried over from previous upgrades and the like. I have the original 250 GB ATA drive and a 1 TB ATA drive installed, plus a couple of other external drives available via USB and Firewire. I was wondering if there would be a recommended configuration of the install of the OS utilizing the multiple drives? i.e. using the 250 GB drive exclusively for the OS and the 1 TB drive for Applications, music files, photos, games, etc. would I have to make any specific changes to the location of any of the folders and would this create any problems when doing so? Am I over thinking this? I am a little confused as to how to approach this. Please help any advice will be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

What kind of issues? There are very few that warrant a clean install to eliminate & some that will just recur until you find & eliminate their real cause.
I was wondering if there would be a recommended configuration of the install of the OS utilizing the multiple drives?
The only ones I recommend are those that dedicate a drive other than your normal startup one for backups. To be clear, I mean that the originals & the backups should be on entirely different drives, not just on different partitions of the same drive.
i.e. using the 250 GB drive exclusively for the OS and the 1 TB drive for Applications, music files, photos, games, etc. would I have to make any specific changes to the location of any of the folders and would this create any problems when doing so? Am I over thinking this?
Yes, you are probably over thinking this.
There are some advantages to using a different drive for user files & possibly even for the entire user home folder, but there are also possible problems for any configuration different from the standard one with the OS, apps, & all user folders on the same startup drive. As already suggested, you can move large users folders for some apps like iTunes libraries to a different drive (or even split the media content among different drives) but unless you have a compelling reason to do so, it is much simpler to leave everything in the default configuration.

• Can I do a clean install of 10.5 and use migration assistant from backup ?

I want to install OS 10.5 on to my Macbook. If I do a clean install rather than an archive and install can I then use migration assistant to transfer my accounts and emails from the cloned Superduper backup I have made on an external drive?
Or is Archive and Install better?

I think 99.9% of the people know what you want to do by "clean" (ie, erase or reformat) and that insures there aren't any file or directory problems when you start, that the new OS is all that will be taking up space. Clean has two connotations: Windows or OS 9. There are lots of words that are "no longer used" but everyone knows what "initialize" or reformat means and does.
If you said, "Scratch that" you could mean, "scratch that idea" even though you can't actually scratch anything. And the idea isn't in stone (scratch out) or written with a pencil where you could erase the word or line. Or draw a line through words to "scratch out the line." There can be multiple meanings. Some languages have 5 words for "blue" to denote different shades of blue, and meaning.
Your drive is 60GB which is on the small side so that is one more reason to reformat.
And because installers will create and delete a lot of files, and scatter around, I would do another SD backup (and leave your old backup as is) so you have a copy of Leopard you can boot from and that would be just Apple OS (maybe after applying the 900MB of updates required to get to 10.5.4+).
Migration Assistant has posed some problems for some with how account data is imported into a new group account. Check out http://www.macfixit.com
