Clean Install Vs. Update

Hello everyone,
I always do a clean install of Mac OS X when a new version comes out. I would like to know from everyone's experience if updating to a new OS version without (fresh install) deleting the hard drive will slow down your system.
In other words, Clean Install Vs. Updating which one is better for your system in terms of speed and system errors?
I would like to know, because at every new release I do a complete "Clean" install by deleting my hard drive and starting over.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

I had some problems to update my iMac (Mid 2011) from 10.09 to 10.10. The updating process was easy. After it finished, the System had massiv performance problems and stood still. I decided to install it clean and it was a good choice, now the system's back on and very fast. At work I just updated another iMac from 2011 and there were no problems after the process.
I think Apple did a good job with 10.10. I like it.

  • Core Audio Components Missing After Clean Install and Update to 10.3.9?

I did a clean install of 10.3.x onto my hard disk and then updated to 10.3.9 through Software Update.
Before this install I'd been running 10.3.9 (my disk crashed -- or so I thought -- hence the re-install of all above). I'd been running a music recording program and taking advantage of Apple's Core Audio AU components (e.g. AUDelay, etc), which should be in /Library/Audio/Plug-ins/Components/ or something like that. Now they are missing entirely.
How do I get them back? Where are they to find?
    Thanks!

It was a problem with the 3rd party software -- I hadn't run the installation update to interface with the AU Components -- after the reinstall. Thanks.

  • Lenovo pre-load OS vs. clean install + System Update

Hi all, just wondering what the conventional wisdom is these days: stick with the Lenovo pre-load OS or perform a clean install and then use System Update to add whichever drivers seem worth adding.
I've traditionally performed clean installs on new computers, but I'd be happy to skip the chore if it's not all that beneficial anymore.

Re-installing is pain.. Especially if you have spent week/months tweaking your system too make it perfect just the way you want it.. You can probably back up the home directory and get back some of your configuration.. But re-installing all the applications you need again will be a pain..
Especially with Arch Linux and it's KISS principles, you HAVE to re-install every single application after you re-install the system.. It's not like Ubuntu or Fedora where you get some stock applications ready to use.. Don't do it..
As siriusb pointed out above, re-installing is the microsoft way.. With Arch (or in general with Linux), you can fix just about any situation with a little effort (sometimes even no effort).. Have a little patience, try figuring out what went wrong.. Post your questions in forums..
It is a LOT easier to fix your system (with help from people in the community/forums) than to re-install..

  • Constant crashing with Snow Leopard, even with "clean install"

I've had a lot of trouble with crashes after installing SL. These crashes seem related to video issues. iMovie crashes immediately. iPhoto crashes if I double-click a photo. QuickTime crashes all the time. Usually these crash the entire system. The video of my entire screen sometimes get broken and jittery just before such a system crash. I've also had the crash where the screen becomes gray and I'm told to restart in many languages.
Anyway, I finally erased my disk and "clean installed" SL, updated it to 10.6.5, then installed iLife 11 and updated that. iMovie immediately crashed. Does this confirm a hardware error, or are there some hidden settings (like in the PRAM) that can be wrong and are carried over even through a clean install? If so, how do I restore these to the factory defaults?

Those are "kernel panics," which are usually hardware-related.
Start with this: [Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509].
and the (free) Rember, a heavy-duty memory tester, from: http://www.kelleycomputing.net/
If nothing there helps, see this Apple article: [If “You need to restart your computer” appears|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8965.html].

  • I tried to install latest OS update. Recd error installing. IT tried to load the upgrade in Safe Mode. Now system will not boot up. IT says I have to do a clean install which loses all data.

After receiving an error when I try to install the latest update of OS-X, I took my laptop to oour schools IT dept. They tried to run the update in safe mode and then they got an error saying the system could not find the hard drive. Now they want to run a clean install which loses 1000's of docs and pictures. I have Block I exams in med school next Monday and all of my notes and slides are on that hard drive.
The IT dept took the hard drive out and tried to back it up and they said they other computer could not connect or find my hard drive.
    Major panic....
I have Norton antivirus and have never found any viruses on the system. I also have a program called ExamSoft which some other students here have noted they had similar crashes. Not sure if that is the issue...

    Several take home messages here:
always back up before you update.
always back up anything you don't want to lose. Kind of like flossing. Only floss the teeth you don't want to lose.
Norton is very, very bad software, and you should get rid of it.
You don't need antivirus software on your mac. Antivirus software on macs causes more trouble than it is worth.
Your hard drive may be failing and thus may not be salvageable.
You could try booting into the recovery partition and seeing if you can repair your hard drive.
If that doesn't work, then there is a small chance that a third party utility (like Disk Warrior or TechTool) might be able to fix your drive (if it is not failing).
If that doesn't work, you may be able to send your drive and a lot of cash to a drive recovery service and see if they can get your files off it.
In the mean time, get notes and slides from a (smart) friend.

  • 0x80070002 on clean install of 8.1 Enterprise or 8.1 Enterprise Update (spring refresh)

I'm looking for some ideas on this baffling problem.
I have three Vostro 1720 laptops from about 4 years ago. They all arrived in the same shipment. Their BIOS's were updated to the same version.
They had been on Win7, so late last year I clean-installed 8.1 Ent on two of them (full wipe, bootable media). All went well.
The last one had been working fine with Win7, but it was time for a new install. I've been trying to install 8.1 Ent on it ever since.
Setup fails during the "Getting files ready for installation" installation stage every time (at a random %, error 0x80070002). That's the stage following "Copying Windows files," which always completes.
I've confirmed that this is not the fault of the DVD or USB used for the install (I've tried both), as they both work fine for other machines.
    Win7 installs fine.
At first, I thought surely it was a compatibility quirk with the newer 8.1 (the other machines were installed with the original 8.1), but no, even the original 8.1--the same one I used for the other two machines!--fails.
I've run MemTest86, no problem. I've run chkdsk /r and HDD Regenerator, no problem.
Nothing odd set in the BIOS (in fact, reset to defaults for good measure). AHCI is on, just as it always is on all of these machines.
What could it be?  Unfortunately, most of the discussion about this error on the Internet has to do with update errors once Windows is already installed (like upgrading from 8.0 to 8.1), which is completely N/A to me.
I'm about to try 8.0 Ent next, but this is getting ridiculous at this point and makes no sense at all.

    Hi,
Glad to hear that you've successfully install the Windows 8.1.
"At first, I thought surely it was a compatibility quirk with the newer 8.1 (the other machines were installed with the original 8.1), but no, even the original 8.1--the same one I used for the other two machines!--fails."
Regarding to the bootable usb, I'm thinking whether the usb has already been corrupted because I noticed that the installation fails in other machines. so create a new bootable usb if possible to eliminate this cause.

  • I'm using a late 2006 2.33GHz imac.I clean installed 10.6 from disc then updated to 10.7 from download. Now every time my computer goes into sleep it won't wake up.Anyone know how to cure this problem please??

    I'm using a late 2006 2.33GHz imac.
I clean installed 10.6 from disc then updated to 10.7 from download.
Now every time my computer goes into sleep it won't wake up.
The only way it will restart is to pull the mains lead out of the imac, put it back and try until it will start.
This only happened after reinstalling.  Only Apple OS was on the imac and so it must be an issue with the software I believe.....
Anyone know how to cure this problem please?
    Thanks
    paul

This isn't a fix, more a workaround I used when I had wake from sleep problems that lasted from some point in 10.6.x, through 10.7 and into 10.8 (got fixed for me in 10.8.2). It seems to be connected with Bluetooth failing to wake up properly:
System Preferences>Energy Saver and set 'computer sleep' to 'never'.

  • Cannot Install Software Update after a Clean Install

I did a clean install of 10.5. I ran the initial Software Update and proceeded to install all the available updates including Version 10.5.4. I installed some software and later did another Software Update check. There were 2 more updates available.
Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 1 adds support for Java SE 6
    Security Update 2008-005 (Leopard)
I rebooted the iMac as requested and the Software Update window appeared. I checked both updates and proceeded. The progress bar proceeded about 1/8 of the way with the message Installing 2 items.... Configuring Installation. This appeared to hang there and I left it running overnight. When I looked at it again, the progress bar had not moved. I then tried each one separately, still using the Software Update. Same problem only that the Java update showed the progress bar 1 / 2 the way and is hanging there.
I verified the disk and it was okay. I have used the iMac for almost 2 years and have never had a problem with the Software Update.
Here is the last entry in the install log which seems to indicate the install was done, but the Software Update Window is still there with the "Installing 1 Item" message and I cannot stop the process or force quit it.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I guess I should be careful how I word my posts.
I should have said I resolved the problem that I had. The solution to the problem was to do a manual download of the updates. That worked without a hitch and while solving the immediate problem did not help me understand why automatic updates failed to properly install the identical files.

It is a relatively new iMac purchased from Apple in early 07. Yes, it was a a Retail Version of OS X 10.5 that I purchased when I upgraded 10.4, I have seen this problem many times in Windows, but never experienced it in the almost 2 years of mac usage. I guess I am not the only one having problems as there is a similar post made several hours after mine.

  • Updating to iOS 6 using clean install on a different machine to the one I sync with

    Hi,
Slightly confusing situation here, but one for which I can't get a reliable answer out of AppleCare.
iPhone 4S, running latest version of iOS 5, currently syncing with my Mac mini.  I want to:
    1) Perform a clean install of iOS 6
    2) Change all syncing from the Mac mini to my Mac Pro
    3) Restore all the data from the pre-update backup, so that I'm back to where I was pre-update, albeit with iOS 6 instead of 5.
I have made a backup of the iPhone on my Mac Pro.  It's running iTunes 10.7 and OS X 10.8.2.  At the moment, my plan is to:
    1) Choose "Restore" from the "Summary" screen of iTunes.
My belief is that this will erase the device, and then download and install the latest version of iOS, ie. 6.
    2) Choose "Restore from Backup" by right-clicking my iPhone 4S in the iTunes Sidebar
My belief is that this will restore all my data from the backup I just made, ie. prior to updating to iOS 6.
I should, by the end of these two steps, have a phone running iOS 6 that now syncs (ie. is linked with) with my Mac Pro and not my Mac mini.  Am I right?
Just to clarify: the Mac mini has no data synced with the iPhone per se, but I used it for the activation process and to add some music, so the iPhone 4S and the Mac mini thus became linked.  My Mac Pro is the device that actually has all my movies, music, apps etc., and I've finally got round to moving my iPhone to sync with it.  Both Macs, and the iPhone, use the same Apple ID.
    Thanks

Never mind, I finally spoke to a Tier 2 who grasped the issue.
Despite the process above, the Mac Pro would _not_ be considered the sync library for this iPhone.  Any attempt to sync new apps, music, videos etc. to this iPhone would result in all current examples of those types being purged from the iPhone first, even if they were identical and registered to the same Apple ID.
When it comes to apps, I can think of no reason why ExampleApp v1.10 on the iPhone, registered to Apple ID: ExampleID, should be deleted along with all associated data only to be replaced with ExampleApp v1.10 registered to ExampleID when synced with a different iTunes library authorised for ExampleID.  Non-DRMed media I can understand; but apps?  Apple've lost me there.
If anyone can shed some light on this disappointing situation, it might give me some comfort.

  • After clean install of Mountain Lion 10.8.5 no Gate Keeper and a ton a long list of differences in verify disk permissions after updating to Itunes 12.1

    HI everybody.
    I have a MacBopok Prop 15" from mid 2012, 2.6Ghz, Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM 1 TB SSD.
As my Mac was running as fast as possible it  was getting slower down during start and shutdown, from 2 secopnds to 15 secconds during start and shutdown . Apps were crashing sometimes a freeze, total crash which made me go directly to Recovery HD and not my log in page after all the tricks I know I took it to service center where they zeroed my SSD HD and reinstalled Mountain Lion 10.8.5. Strangly enough Gate keeper was not in my preferences and a old version of Itunes 10.4 if I recall. The Mac is still slow while I reinstall all apps from App store and one for one documents and folders from my latest TM back up.
Updated the Security update, and other updates had the same problem as many updating Iphoto 9.4.3 error 102, still have not been able.
But running verify disk permissions there is a massive list of Itunes differences while I have not  even added one song. At least 60 to 70 differences. I know a lot of these differences are nothing to worry about but a clean install without Gate keeper and an old Itunes which after update to 12.1 has so many disk differences, this can not as it should be also as I have not added anything from my Itunes library. Any feedback or advice would be very much appreciated.
    Greetings
    Matt

Do a backup. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then re-install the OS.

  • Error U44M1p7 after a clean install of PS CC. "A patch not installed".  Retry to update gives same.

I've had problems for months with CC desktop failing when I boot up (for some reason it always tries to update itself and fails).  The normal reinstall won't work until I jump through hoops to uninstall CC desktop.  So, today I decided to bite the bullit and uninstalled PS CC and Bridge CC to see if a clean install would clear my continuing issue. The Adobe techs just have a script that can get me up today, but I am in same boat again tomorrow.  Did the uninstall of CC desktop, uninstall of PS CC and Bridge CC and then reinstalled CC desktop. So far so good. Next used CC desktop to reinstall PS CC (very long download) and upon reinstall get error U44M1P7 and message the installation succeeded, but a patch failed.
Desktop CC shows that I need to update PS, so I try.       Again get error U44M1P7.
Why is this so hard?  I never had these problems before CC?

Pages question: recent update OS10.5 to 10.6 to Lion. Using Pages (4.1) only some documents intermittently
won't open. At Genius bar loaded new copy Pages; reloaded Lion clean install. Still won't open although will on another computer. On the other Mac (running Lion), saved a copy of a document with a new name and sent it back to first computer. At first it would open, but now it as well as multiple other Pages documents won't open. What now?

    yes;
I got Pages to work now- there were two versions, one Universal, and one Intel- by moving the Universal to trash ( although I can't delete it) and moving Intel version to iWorks folder in Applications, it is now working. Doesn't explain why it didn't work though- the other MacBook pro 17 inch that could open all the Pages documents also has two copies of Pages as I see now....
I still however can't open Numbers documents on the MacBook pro 15 inch.... it is a Universal version of Numbers.
