Clean Install...where do you start?

I need to erase the drive and perform a clean install due to the disk utility not being able to repair a volume on the hard drive. I am using OS X.3.9 now but have purchased OS X 10.5 and want to install it. After erasing the disk, do I need to begin with the original software that came with the computer, moving through all upgrades since purchase....or will I only need to use the new OS X 10.5 install disk?

Hi-
First, backup your data, please!
Unless you have software that won't run on Leopard, there is no reason that you must install Panther. Leopard will install without a previous OS. Simply erase the drive, format in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and install Leopard.
However, if you have software that you must use, and you aren't sure of, or, there isn't compatibility with Leopard, you would do better to install Panther. You can have both OS's on a single drive, and this would be the safest way (with regard to older software).
To install both OS's, it would be best to partition the drive into two partitions, using the Disk Utility. You can then install Panther, and your applications on one partition, and Leopard, and any applications, on the other partition. Installing this way, will also avoid any conflict that Leopard may have with older Panther components (as opposed to installing over Panther).
Let me know if you have further questions.

What OSX was installed when you purchased your Mac? Even though it was installed you should have received the install disk(s) as the Utilities are on those.
If you do not have the install disk you can try contacting Apple and see if they can supply one,(explain you never received at purchase) you will need the build info of your machine, which can be found by clicking the Apple logo in the menu bar>About This Mac>More Info, and it should be in the first window under hardware overview. • After clean install, where are my photos?

I did a clean install because the computer was so slow (iMac Intel-OS 10.8.2). After the clean install I could not find any of  my photos. I checked Library and Application Support. There is no iPhoto file in the Library. I have complete backups on Time Machine.
    Heeeelp!!

If you did a clean install then you wiped your computer completely clean, BDAqua is spot on. Restore from your backup.

  • Clean install problem, refuse to start installation

    Hello,
I had mountain lion and wanted to do a complete clean install by doing the cmd+r (recovery mode), format my internal harddrive and then reinstall mountain lion using the recovery system. However, this failed miserably, and now when I reboot the computer, it takes 50 minutes to get into 'internet mode' (or whatever it's called) and then, I get to LION recovery.
So I tried to install Lion instead, however, this is calculated to take 122 hours. Then nothing happens (I left it on for the night to see if anything changed).
What am I supposed to do?!

Why did it fail? What happened. Did you do this:
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • HTML5, where do you start?

Hi. I am on a PC using XP and have Dreamweaver CS4.
I just have a simple question and am hoping for a simple answer
Can one just start writing code in HTML5 in a program like Dreamweaver CS4 or do you have to  have something downloaded to write a page in that format?
I am just kind of new to this and am trying to discover HTML5. Will Dreamweaver CS4 understand HTML5?
I'm trying to read up on it but I am finding a lot of background info.
    Thank you in advance........

    I guess you can't write HTML5 using CS4. I found this:
"The first thing you need to do if you want to write HTML 5 with Dreamweaver CS5 is make sure that you have the 11.0.3 update. Go to the “Help” menu and choose “Updates...”. This will open a new application — the Adobe Application manager. Click on Dreamweaver and if that update is listed you will need to install it and then restart your computer.
Once you have the 11.0.3 update, you will have access to a bunch of new features including support for HTML 5 and CSS 3."

  • Building Dynamic web sites... where do you start these days?

OK... first off, I'm no coding expert but I have used Dreamweaver for many years to build web sites using a pretty basic ms access databases to generate a few dynamic web pages in .asp.
My question is, since the changes following Adobe Dreamwever CS5.5, what is the best way to develop dynamic sites. I want to update my existing web site (www.britishbutterflies.co.uk) and also move the dynamic content to a modern database/scriting language. I intend to build the new site using a responsive layout. I don't want to host the site via Adobe.
I'm sure I'm not the only one completely confused with the plethora of apps and software packages Adobe are currently promoting but can't seem to find any info which provides a clear guide as to what software/approach is best. Is Adobe Muse the best option - can this help with coding dynamic content like dreamwevare used too and can I host the site with my own web hosts?
Although the code produced by Dreamweaver was never perfect or the most up-to-date, those of us interested in doing a bit of dynamic web development on a non-commercial scale could get away with doing so up until Dreamweaver CS6. Now the whole thing seems like a pot of worms and dynamic web design only open to those with pots of cash and lots of time and a phd in astrophysics? :-)
Any help or suggestions much appreciated.
    Steve

Not sure what you're refering to in the part about hosting with Adobe. You've never needed to do that at any point, and still don't. The "Creative Cloud" is, in my opinion, a terrible name for Adobe's current subscription service. The programs through it are still installed and reside fully on your machine. The websites you make are hosted wherever you choose.
Muse would not be the way to go. It's meant to target non-coding designer who wants to work with the internet and put a lot of bells and whistles on their site. The code it produces is very difficult to work with or make changes to.
DWCS6 still has its database interactions, those were removed (and for the most part, put back with both free and paid third party extensions) in DWCC. You can have both DWCS6 and DWCC installed on the same machine with a Creative Cloud subscription.

  • Booklet: clean install Windows 7 Starter on Kingst...

I bought a Kingston SSDNow V+180 SVP180S2/64G 64GB to replace the original HDD.
I had a lot of trouble cloning the drive (or actual the restore operation). Both restoring the Windows partition and the System partition failed.
I decide to start from scratch and just execute a clean install of Windows 7 Starter.
The advantage of this way is you only need a 4 Gb USB  Flash Drive and no other hardware (besides the new 1.8 SSD...) This guide is also very useful when the original HDD is broken (and no system restore is available).
Ingredients (where to obtain is explained below):
    - 1.8" SSD
    - USB Flash Drive (minimum) 4Gb
    - Windows 7 key of Booklet
    - Windows 7 ISO file (x86 version)
    - Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool
    - Nokia Booklet Drivers
The Windows 7 key of the booklet can be found behind the battery. Just remove the battery pack and there is the original Microsoft Windows 7 product key.
As the Nokia Booklet doesn't have a DVD-ROM and it's not supplied with the Windows 7 DVD, you can download the Windows 7 ISO file from here (make sure it’s the x86 version):
    http://msft-dnl.digitalrivercontent.net/msvista/pub/X15-65804/X15-65804.iso
I got this information from here:  http://mrintech.com/download-iso-file-create-dvd-activate-windows-7-x86-and-x64-with-genuine-product...
I also executed the "Remove Edition Configuration (EI.cfg) File from Windows 7 ISO", but wait until proceeding; I will come back to that...
Also download the Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool from here:
http://images2.store.microsoft.com/prod/clustera/framework/w7udt/1.0/en-us/Windows7-USB-DVD-tool.exe (When the link is broken, just use Google).
Please note: nothing illegal is going on downloading this software!
Install and execute the Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool.
When asked, select the ISO as source and the USB Flash Drive as target.
The tool formats the USB Flash Drive and the files are copied to it as well.
(I executed this on a Windows 7 machine, but I don't expect differences when executed on a XP machine).
When the tool is ready do the following.
Search on the USB Flash Drive for the file "ei.cfg"
I used the tool to remove this file from the ISO, but it was back on the Flash Drive .
You will have to remove it otherwise Windows 7 Home is installed (result: you can't use the original Booklet key).
How to replace the HDD for the SSD can be found over here:
    http://pc-level.com/2011/07/how-to-disassemble-nokia-booklet-3g/
Plug the USB Flash Drive into the Nokia Booklet and power the Booklet up.
Hit the F12 button and select the USB Flash Drive to boot from.
When asked, select Windows 7 Starter to install.
The installation takes a while, but in the end you will see the Windows 7 desktop and are almost ready.
It's very important to disable TRIM and you will see a an excellent performance increase when you execute the following:
Open the command prompt (for example):
Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt
    type:
    fsutil behavior set disabledeletenotify 1
To check whether TRIM is disabled execute:
    fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify
    The result should be: 1
Reboot the booklet, just to be sure.
Install the drivers from Nokia: http://europe.nokia.com/support/product-support/booklet-3g/software
    Execute a Windows Update.
The Windows Experience Index shows me 5.9 with the SSD.

Don't worry Reserter, your English is ok
Concerning your problem two things come to mind:
    - did you disable TRIM? It's very important to disable this option because the chipset can't handle TRIM. After I disabled TRIM a serious improvement was noticeable.
    - the reason of the clean install initially was because I wanted a SSD (solid state drive) instead of a HDD (hard disk drive). The factory installed HDD is slow and a SSD drive improves performance of the Nokia Booklet dramatically.
I would consider to buy a 1.8" SSD... The booklet starts up in an acceptable time and is really useful as a netbook now. (buy an enclosure for the original HDD and you have external storage as well).

  • Can you clean install Yosemite?

My iMac is becoming a bit sluggish so I would like to take the opportunity for a clean install with Yosemite. Can I clean install Yosemite as you could with Mavericks by using ctrl -R, erasing the hard drive, reformatting and then using internet recovery?
    Late 2012 iMac
Currently on latest OSX Mavericks - OS X 10.9.5 (13F34)

Rather than an unnecessary clean install answer some questions about the slowness to see if we can determine what is causing the problem.  What exactly is slowing down, booting, a application or applications, which ones, etd.?
Download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. It's a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC to help identify the more obvious culprits.

  • How do you do a  Clean install lion

How do you do a clean install of lion? My iMac is 8 yr old and has gotten sluggish. At one point it was suggested that I might want to do a clean install but no one ever told me how to do that since we don't have a disk!

Assuming you already have Lion installed, boot into Recovery Mode (Command-R). From there you can reinstall Lion. Note, however, that a clean install means you first erase the drive you want to do the clean install on, and unless you have a complete backup of everything that's currently on it, you'll lose it all; the clean install will leave you with a fresh operating system but nothing else. To get it all back, make that external clone, then when the clean install is finished on the internal, Setup Assitant will run and you can point it at the external clone to get all your stuff back.

  • Installing XP-Says "Clean Install" First

I purchased a new MacBook last weekend and then ordered XP Home Edition OEM to work with Bootcamp after posting several messages here and receiving good advice. The software arrived today and says the following: "Install the software: Because you have purchased a full version of an operating system, installation requires a "clean install" on your hard drive." Does this REALLY mean what it says? I am starting to panic. I have already installed software, etc. on my MacBook prior to receiving this software today. This is software I will use on the "Mac side" of my MacBook. Do I have to erase everything I put on before I can setup Bootcamp and then XP, or does the "partitioning" come into play here and it doesn't matter?

    Hey Sunny46:
A clean install is for you Windows XP installation. Not MAC OS X, also follow the instructions I gave listed below.
    1) Your software is safe on your mac partition
    2) Press Command + Shift + U to go to Utilities.
    3) Double click on Bootcamp.
    4) Make a Partition for windows (Whatever works for you 10GB, 20GB etc.)
    5) Insert your XP CD
    6) In Bootcamp click on start Windows Installation and then continue.
    7) Let that run and follow all on screen instructions.
    8) When Windows XP ask to to format simply select the format and head to next set of instruction
    9) Once installed, install all BootCamp Drivers for windows.
    10) reboot.......
    11) Rename your Harddrive by going to My computer, right click on your harddrive and bring up properties from there you should see a field to name your Harddrive. The reason for this is so your Mac Parition does not show a untitled name for the Hardrive partition.
12)Thats it! remember to update your Mac OS and your Windows XP

  • Migration of 10.6.8 after clean install of OS X Lion

I have a full Time Machine backup of my v10.6.8 system but I'd like to perform clean install of OS X Lion and then bring all my files over.
Can I migrate the files from my Time Machine backup in any sort of automated fashion (besides simply performing a straight upgrade) or would I need to manually drag everything over after installing Lion?

When you use SetUp Assistqnt on your clean install you can choose to migrate from TM, but then it won't be a clean install. You can choose to just port over your own files and install apps seperately. But some apps that depend on PowerPC installers won't install, whereas if you migrated and they are universal except for the installer they would work.
EDIT: You cannot manually drag from TM.

  • Can't do a complete clean install (defective hard drive?)

    Hello
    I picked up a used G4 Quicksilver 733 mhz.
I knew that I would need a retail OS 9.2 bootable install disc, to do a fresh install, so I picked one up.
But it appeared as though the prior owner did not do a proper erase of the old hard drive, because before I tried a new install, upon boot up, I always recieved a stalled start up of OS 9.2
Anyway, I attempted a new install:
Pressing the C Prompt Starts OS 9.2 and you will see the Prompt "Starting Up"
I then opened Disk Utility, and choose the option for 'Drive Set Up'
I then choose 'Initialize', and received the option: "Initializing will destroy all data on the following volumes"
I also customized the initialization, and choose "Mac OS Extended" (but I believe this may have already been the defaulted option?)
I then selected the only HD, (the original existing 40 Gig HD), and initialized it successfully
Next there was the option for "Clean Install"
I choose this, and customized the install unchecking "Airport" (as this computer will run on a wired router)
The install appears to complete itself and I choose the option: 'Quit'
At this point when I try to eject the disc, I continually recieve the prompt "The start up disc cannot be removed from the desktop because it contains the active system software."
Then when I shut the system down, and reboot, the same original problem occurs whereby the system boot up STALLS about 1/4 of the way into the operating system.
This leads me to believe that either the old hard drive was not erased properly, or it is defective.
Any other thoughts would be appreciated?
    Thanx
    Mike

As eww stated, you can't eject an OS Installer disc while it's running the computer. One can also eject a disc at startup, after the chime by pressing the CD drive tray button. Or if you have it, the eject button on your keyboard. But the mouse trick is a very good one. The point is, all methods are at startup, right after the chime.
Did you run Disk First Aid? If not, do so.
Also, you might open the case and reset the CUDA. It's a button next to the PRAM battery. Touch the power supply case; don't move about after doing so; or wear a static wrist band. Be careful...press the CUDA button once...careful in that you need to position yourself so that you press it once and not let your finger slip off. Don't touch anything else while doing so. Hold it down for 8-10 seconds.
A bad PRAM battery could also be a culprit. "operator headgap" has very good prices on batteries. I would suspect other things before assuming the HD is bad. HDD's can last a very long time; 'most' of the time they'll make noises if they're bad, but not all the time.
After the clean install and after you press Quit, choose Restart from the drop-down menu. Then you may eject the Installer disc and hopefully OS 9 will start up. If not, please let us know.
    HTH!

  • Hard Drive Erase, Clean Install and Time Machine

I am currently running OS X 10.10.3 and I want to do a clean install. All my content is backed up with Time Machine via external drive.
First, how do I erase my hard drive and install a fresh version of OS X 10.10.3?
Second, is it better to use a USB drive for the clean install or just you the Recovery Mode?
Last, once i finally have a clean installation of OS X 10.10.3, am i able to access my external drive via time machine to bring back some of my old files...i have read that the folder in the external drive is not accessible and not accessible through time machine.
I appreciate the response and guidance!

    Hello Jacob,
All of these are good questions to have when erasing and installing OS X Yosemite. To answer your first question you would need to boot to either your Recovery HD or through the Recovery USB and follow the steps in the first article below. Either option will get the task accomplished and will install OS X Yosemite. For your final question about restoring from a Time Machine back up, you will see the option to restore when going through the setup process of your Mac.
