Clean Installation of Windows Server 2012 R2 cannot access internet

I just installed a clean Windows Server 2012 R2 Data Center and all drivers installed with no issue. I used Ethernet connection to access internet via IE (let say google.com) but failed. Clicked "Fix connection problem" and returned "website
(www.google.com) is online but isn't responding to connections attempts." Therefore, I suspected Windows Firewall (WF) setting. I disabled WF, allow IE in WF, allow port 80 but all did not work in this case. I am able to ping google.com but it just does'n
work in browser (IE, Chrome, Firefox). The same cable connection I tried with Windows 8.1, 7 with  no issue. Please advise is there any clue I miss up for Windows 2012 R2 Data Center?

I have an ASA5505 I am trying to integrate into our network, however the ASA5505 won't allow our server to access the internet via our HP Procurve layer3 switch. first off, what license do you have installed on the ASA (show version will tell you that)?
Second, if I remember correctly trunk in HP terms does not mean the same as trunk in Cisco terms.  In HP a trunk refers to the bundling of an interface in what Cisco calls Etherchannels or Portchannels (which the 5505 does not support)
Also you need to configure names for all the VLAN interfaces and either dynamic NAT for each interface or configure a dynamic NAT that matches all the interfaces (with the any keyword)
    object network obj_any
     nat (any,outside) dynamic interface

  • My 10.9.0.1 internal mac was ruined after the installation of Windows Server 2012 on boot camp

Hi Everyone. I've been trying to install Windows Server 2012 on my boot camp. Well, soon after the 2012 was installed, my mac os 10.9.0.1 was ruined. When I pressed on the option key while the imac was booting, I can see the icon of "10.9.0.1 recovery". But after I chose it, the apple tried very hard to boot it up with a progress bar below the apple icon. The computer shut down itself after the progress bar reached the end. I've tried boot it up with the installation CD and tried to repair the Macintosh HD in Disk Uitilites but no use. It was said the hard drive cannot be repaired and better be reformat. Currently I can only boot up my mac from my SuperDuper external clone drive. Anyone could give me wise advices to fix this problem please?

The "wise advices" I can offer are:
Read the Boot Camp documentation before trying to reinstall Windows Server. Windows Server is not supported by Boot Camp
Erase and reformat your hard drive. Reinstall OSx then restore your data from your backup.
Use a virtual machine like Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox to install Windows Server

and also I have downloaded the above and trying to install on Windows Server 202 R2 . I m getting application server web server configuration error while running pre requisites. whether it is application feature issue or SP1 ISSUE, not sure..
http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2891274  if it is SP1 issue where do I get trial version of SP1.
to be upfront, Microsoft is not clear in documenting all these..very poor.
Please help me with the same.
    Thanks, Ram Ch

    Hi Ram,
Yes, it is a Slipstream version of SharePoint 2013 including SP1.You can download SharePoint Server 2013 SP1 from the Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN), the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC), and the Microsoft Partner Network (MPN).
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/downloads/?FileId=57191#searchTerm=&Languages=en&PageSize=10&PageIndex=0&FileId=57191
For more information, you can have  a look at the SharePoint 2013 SP1 FAQ:

  • Network Positioning of a Windows Server 2012 R2 Direct Access & VPN Server

Reposted moved from Windows Server Forums- Security
    Hi
I'm in the process of creating a new active directory forest with a single domain using AD.Contoso.com to use the Microsoft example. The reason I have decided on AD.XXXXXXXXX.com is to get way from using split horizon (Split Brain) DNS. The requirements
for our new domain are :-
    2012 R2 AD
    Direct Access & VPN
Exchange 2013 OWA, Active Sync Outlook Anywhere (Possibly a Hybrid Config where we have on premises mailboxes and some exchange online mailboxes Office 365 etc)
    Lync 2013 ?
    SharePoint 2013 ?
    Microsoft Active Directory Certificate Services
System Center Configuration Manager 2012 R2
Two way trusts between old forest and new to enable Transition/Migration
Ok so that's what I'm aiming for so now the question.
They are allowing me to purchase a next Generation Firewall may be a Barracuda NG firewall or a Cisco ASA X series so I need some advice on what type of network topology I should configure. I've read that using the two NIC configuration for
the 2012 R2 Direct Access Server is preferable, one nic on the internal network one on the perimeter. The problem I have with this is that it bridges the internal network and the perimeter bypassing the backend Firewall see image
The other alternative is to dispense with the perimeter network use the Direct Access server with a single NIC and setup the NG Firewall in a three-legged config with the DA server on the DMZ.
So all you security experts out there what would be your design for this simple domain? we don't need any HA or Load Balancing.
    Thanks
    Simon

Ok I'm not sure we are going to get any advice on this subject but one last effort. Our budget can only stretch to one next generation firewall so I'm considering the following three legged firewall design with a two NIC 2012 R2 Direct
Access server. If someone could validate this configuration or suggest an alternative then I would be grateful.

  • Fresh install Windows Server 2012 R2 cannot RDP

I did a fresh install of WS 2012 R2. I enabled remote access as normal leaving network authentication on. I am unable to rdp to an administrator desktop. I then enabled pinging of the new server to make sure I can see the server. I am able to ping the server
from the WS I wish to RDP from and to ping the WS from the server.
I have installed a lot of servers and never had an issue with this.
Anything new in R2 which I'm missing?

Figured it out! Trying to RDP from outside domain, R2 has this rule disabled in Firewall.
    Fixed

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 cannot rename Administrator account via GPO

Have created the normal Rename Administrator GPO: Comp config -> Policies -> Windows settings -> Security settings -> local policies -> Security options Accounts: Rename Administrator Account
But GPO does not get applied for some reason, RSOP indicated the policy engine did not attempt to configure the setting.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi,
    Any update?
Just checking in to see if the suggestions were helpful. Please let us know if you would like further assistance. If the issue persists, please provide the following information for further
    research.

  • Cannot view webpages from internet using windows server 2012.

I can ping public websites, such as google.com etc
Dns resolves name resolution correctly, returning correct ip address.
My issue is that no webdata(html) is returned when requesting a webpage from a public website
I have reduced my internet explorer security settings to the lowest possible just for testing.
I can view local websites on my server correctly.
I am also currently trying activate my windows server 2012 and cannot do this as a result of this issue.
No windows update are taking place either.
I am using a d-link adsl router(DSL-2750U) via the lan to access the internet.
My server is a Dell PowerEdge T20
My laptop can connect to the internet and has no issues using the same network.
I have tried using fixed and dynamic IPs
I am trying to connect to the internet for the 1st time from the server.

    Hi,
Or please disable all your firewall and AV soft, as far as in know, some AV soft can block some “unsafe” website URL, or disable the IE ESC.

  • Unable to Install Windows Server 2012 R2; system aborts and reboots after first blue Windows logo appears

System:  Dell PowerEdge sc1420 with dual xeon and Adaptec 2420SA SATA RAID (supported by OS); 10 GB memory (2x4, rank 2, organization x4, in DIMM1 & DIMM2; 2x1, registered, organization x8, in DIMM3 & DIMM4)
This computer is currently running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise which was installed with no problems.
Objective: clean install of Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard on an otherwise unused RAID array disk set.
All attempts to boot from DVD result in loading of files (grey progress bar on bottom of screen), brief dark screen, then black screen with a blue windows logo for about 2 seconds and then a flash of about 10 lines of error notifications on a black screen
for about 1/4 second (unreadable), and then a reboot of the computer.
Coreinfo.exe confirms that cpus DO support NX and PAE; do NOT support VMX (virtual machine enhancements).
Attempts to run memtest.exe from boot disk tool-menu startup result in an error message that the memtest.exe file is corrupt.
Running memtest.exe from Windows 2008 R2 install disk results in all memory tests passed!
Attempted booting with multiple DVD's (some +R, some -R, all verified) burned from .iso.  These DVD's were used successfully to install Windows Server 2012 R2 on an HP Pavilion.  Also changed DVD drives just to rule out DVD hardware.
Running CHKDSK from Windows 2012 R2 on HP Pavilion shows no problems; running CHKDSK from Windows 2008 R2 on the Dell system on the same disks shows some problems.  Running checkdisk on the Windows 2008 R2 install disk from the Windows 2008 R2 installed
system shows no problems.  All disks burned and verified on same system.
Also attempted to boot from USB thumbdrive with copy of DVD on it.  Same results: system loads files then reboots at first Windows logo.  So that would rule out disk quality issues per se??
Started to try an upgrade rather clean install to see if any errors were announced.  None were announced as the system went through much of the process.  I aborted somewhere along the way before committing to the upgrade because 1) the most likely
outcome was it would not boot after install (I don't really need the practice in restoring); and 2) even if it did reboot, having a system that can't be repaired by booting the install disk is pointless.
All disks and raid arrays are recognized and usable by RAID controller card and by Windows Server 2008 R2.  Disks are within spec for use with Adaptec 2420SA (1TB @ 300).
Is VMX (aka VT-x) actaully required for ANY install even though Hyper-V is not intended to be used?  If so, it is too bad that the Microsoft system requirements (
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn303418.aspx ) don't make that clear.  And lack of VMX support really doesn't explain the memtest.exe "corruption" issue.
Or is it maybe something unique about the files on 2012 R2 disk (or disk image on USB) that are causing some problem with the chipset processing?  But why?
My vote would be for the latter of the issues, but I have no clue why or if it is remediable.  Suggestions?

So here is what I think is the final understanding of this problem:
First, one additional piece of important information:  The computer successfully moves into and through the Windows Boot Loader phase and succeeding phase ONLY for Windows 8.1 32-bit, but NOT for Windows 8.1 64-bit nor for Windows
    Server 2012 R2 (only 64-bit).
The Windows Boot Manager phase (which precedes the Windows Boot Loader phase) is either 32-bit or 64-bit (64 –bit for this case) and is loaded by the 16-bit stub program (Bootmgr) which starts in real mode.
Windows Boot Loader of course runs in either 32-bit or 64-bit (64 –bit for this case) according to the product being installed.
By inference, the essential problem is occurring in conjunction with the loading of a WIM file to start the Windows Boot Manager.
The boot manager starts ok and generally shows its essential screens (Windows Boot Manager; Advanced Boot Options) or proceeds to load files for transition into Windows startup in the succeeding Windows Boot Loader phase (that doesn’t “boot” but rather
loads the system).  This is best confirmed by the announced corruption of the memtest.exe file when selecting Windows Memory Diagnostic from the Windows Boot Manager Screen.
If allowed to continue loading files to pass control to the Windows Boot Manager, the type of abort and resulting immediate restart that occurs is that which you would associate with unhandled cpu exceptions (invalid instruction, memory out of range,
wild interrupt, etc.) that most of us have not commonly seen for 20 years (since beginning to use well behave OS’s from Windows NT 3.1 and on).
So, the problem obviously is due to a failure to properly mount the WIM file and/or properly access it (probably the latter) when running in 64-bit protected mode.
This is independent of the hardware on which the install disk is actually mounted (DVD or USB-flash), so it is NOT a hardware problem
    per se.
Since the WIM is mounted early in the process, Boot Manager may well have loaded it using BIOS routines to access the physical device on which it resides rather than loading 32-bit or 64-bit drivers of its own.
Hence, if the BIOS does not “mount” the WIM in a way that is later fully compatible with access from the 64-bit systems being loaded, it could cause apparent file corruption.
If it is only partially incompatible some functionality may appear quite usable (like loading files) until later detected.
This is vague on my part, because the exact nature of the incompatibility cannot be readily determined from the information available.
But the consequence is the same: the system cannot boot from the install disk, either for initial installation or repairs.
Incidental conclusion:  The 64-bit boot manager code for Windows Server 2008 does not exhibit this faulty behavior, but the 64-bit code for Windows Server 2012 does.
So the problem is not inherent with loading 64-bit server OS’s.
Expectations:  If the system were to be upgraded using the features of the install disk while running an installed OS, say Windows Server 2008 R2, it might well succeed and yield a fully functional system upgraded to Windows Server 2012
R2 (because the installed operating system is started from discrete files, not from a WIM file).
However, in order to perform a disaster recovery using Windows resources (such as image backups from Windows Server Backup), one would have to presumably boot from a Windows Server 2012 64-bit install disk or Windows Server USB recovery drive.
Of course we know that the Windows Server install disk will not boot and we can be fairly sure that the problem will migrate to any Windows Server USB recovery drive that is created.
My inspection of a Windows 7 System Repair CD shows that is based exclusively on boot.wim, not discrete files!
Of course a generated image for a WIM for Windows 2012 USB recovery drive
might not have the flaw that drives this behavior, but it probably would.
Problem conclusion:  A BIOS upgrade would be required for compatibility with Windows Server 2014 clean installation
and any maintenance; and none is available from the OEM.
Problem not resolved, but understood for future reference.
Thanks to Tim whose comments helped me focus my thinking.

  • Issues With Backing up Server to USB HDD in Windows Server 2012 Essentials

    Hi,
I have a few installs of Windows Server 2012 Essentials on clients sites and I have an issue where by the server will back up to the connected USB HDD for while but then will fail and the only way to make it backup again is to wipe the HDDs then setup server
    backup again.
I get the following error in the Application Event viewer:
The backup operation that started at '‎2014‎-‎01‎-‎16T05:00:12.595237100Z' has failed with following error code '0x80070020' (The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.). Please review the event details for a
solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

    Best Regards,
    Abby_Doc

    Hi Abby_Doc,
Regarding to this issue, generally some application is causing sharing violation on files. Then backup fails to access those files. Such as some
Antivirus program and so on. Please temporarily disable antivirus program and monitor if this issue still persists.
Meanwhile, you can perform a clean boot in Windows to eliminate software conflicts that occur when you backup.

In addition, the Process Monitor will help us to find out which file was actually locked. You can download from following link.

    Hope this helps.

  • New Windows Server 2012 unable connect to Netlogon Service or update DNS records

Hi everybody, all of my Windows Servers 2012 decided to collapse after innocuous group policy update that was meant to make user passwords more secure.
The AD and DNS seem to be functioning "normally", I am able to add new Windows7 and Windows Server 2008 machines to the domain, I can see them in listed in the AD and DNS record are update correctly, however, as soon as I try to join Windows Server
    2012 it breaks.
The event log is littered on the new server with:
The system failed to register host (A or AAAA) resource records (RRs) for network adapter
    with settings:
               Adapter Name : {DB7F73CE-E011-4F3C-BEBC-2CE7A871DF51}
               Host Name : CHEETAH
               Primary Domain Suffix : somedomain.com
               DNS server list :
    192.168.0.5
Sent update to server : <?>
               IP Address(es) :
    192.168.0.15
The reason the system could not register these RRs was because the update request it sent to the DNS server timed out. The most likely cause of this is that the DNS server authoritative for the name it was attempting to register or update is not running
    at this time.
You can manually retry DNS registration of the network adapter and its settings by typing 'ipconfig /registerdns' at the command prompt. If problems still persist, contact your DNS server or network systems administrator.
    and
Name resolution for the name _ldap._tcp.Default-First-Site-Name._sites.dc._msdcs.somedomain.com. timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.
When I try to ping the primary DC (WS2003) it fails, the Secondary DC (WS2012) responds.
The >nltest /sc_query:somedomain.com on Windows Servers 2012 returns:
    Flags: 0
    Trusted DC Name
    Trusted DC Connection Status Status = 1311 0x51f ERROR_NO_LOGON_SERVERS
    The command completed successfully
yet it works on all other machines.
I tried removing 2012 servers from the domain and rejoining - without success. The cookie crumbled when I added two new installations of Windows Server 2012 & 2008 and 2008 worked fine but 2012 showed same symptoms.
There is one peculiar thing that I had noticed on all Windows 2012 machines, it constantly showing "Workplace Connection - Connecting" in the networks pane on the right side of the screen, which I can't say i ever noticed before.
Unfortunately, the secondary DC is a multihoming server with Direct Access role - I am not sure if this may play some part but our existing configuration worked for a year now without any problems. Issue appeared when I changed the password complexity rule,
which boggles the mind. I wonder if there has been some other changes in GPO that did not propagate from years ago and finally comeback to break things.
Any suggestions would be really appreciated.
    wmin

Hello Ace, i wish you a Happy New Year! I hope your break was enjoyable and filled with cheer.
In the end I had to bite the bullet and reinstall all troublesome servers. Your recommendations from above removed some serious problems with the DA and DNS resolution.
I was able to attach new server to the domain without any problems and begin painful process of rebuild.
I have promoted TIGER to full DC controller role, but having some issues with replication. Although running >repadmid /showrepl gives positive
feedback, the sysvol folder on the secondary DC is empty.
Also there is a couple of warnings in the event log:
    Event ID 4012
    Log Name: DNS Server
    Source: DNS-Server-Service
The DNS server is waiting for Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) to signal that the initial synchronization of the directory has been completed. The DNS server service cannot start until the initial
synchronization is complete because critical DNS data might not yet be replicated onto this domain controller. If events in the AD DS event log indicate that there is a problem with DNS name resolution, consider adding the IP address of another DNS server
for this domain to the DNS server list in the Internet Protocol properties of this computer. This event will be logged every two minutes until AD DS has signaled that the initial synchronization has successfully completed.
    - which has not repeated since 3rd of Jan.
These events occur on the primary DC every few minutes:
    Event ID 1030
    Source: Userenv
    Log Name: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Windows cannot query for the list of Group Policy objects. Check the event log for possible messages previously logged by the policy engine that describes the reason for this.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
    Event ID 1058
    Source: Userenv
    Log Name: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Windows cannot access the file gpt.ini for GPO CN={31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9},CN=Policies,CN=System,DC=somedomain,DC=com. The file must be present at the location <\\somedomain.com\sysvol\somedomain.com\Policies\{31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9}\gpt.ini>.
(The network name cannot be found. ). Group Policy processing aborted.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Should sysvol folder be shared on the secondary DC? Another interesting thing to point out is that
    \\somedomain.com\sysvol\somedomain.com\Policies\ can be access
from all other machines except the DC1.
    Cheers!
    kind regards,
    wmin

  • Windows Media Player on Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter Edition

I have a server with Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter edition installed. This server is being used as a terminal server and I needed to have Windows Media Player installed in order to use a certain feature of a program running on the terminal server. After
researching online I found that all I should need to do is install the Desktop Experience feature and Windows Media Player was included in that. After installing the Desktop Experience feature and restarting the server, I was not able to find Windows
Media Player anywhere. I tried the same process on another server running Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter with the same results.
I was curious as to if this was a Datacenter thing where it was specifically not included with Datacenter edition. I was not able to find any documentation stating that WMP was not included in Datacenter, and everything that I found stated that the feature
sets for Standard and Datacenter were the same, it was just the licensing for them was different.
Curious to see if it would get installed with Desktop Experience on Standard, I spun up a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard VM and installed Desktop Experience and sure enough WMP was installed as well. I then upgraded the Standard VM to Datacenter with a
Datacenter product key and after a restart WMP was still present.
I have also tried this exact same process with Windows Server 2012 (non R2) Datacenter edition and WMP was installed as expected, so it appears that this is only a problem with R2.
My question is, I this "works as designed" and I was just not able to find the documentation to support it or is this a bug?
Update: After doing some more playing around I noticed that if I did a clean install of Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter and then installed the Desktop Experience feature and WMP does get installed. Then I remembered that on the servers that I was trying to
install WMP on and it wasn't working were upgraded from 2012 to 2012 R2. So I created a brand new VM and installed Server 2012 Datacenter (non R2), then upgraded to Server 2012 R2 Datacenter and installed Desktop Experience and sure enough, WMP did not
install. So now I really think it is a bug and it is related to the 2012 to 2012 R2 upgrade process.

    Hi Caleb CSG,
    Thanks for your feedback.
I'll feedback a report to Microsoft, and I also recommend you can post this bug in Microsoft connect.
