Clean installation on new ssd, win7 now on sdb1

This might be more a win7 related post, or maybe grub, not sure:
I used to have dual boot Arch/Win7, with the following fstab:
/dev/sda1 /media/windows ntfs-3g defaults 0 0
/dev/sda2 / ext4 defaults 0 1
/dev/sda3 /home ext4 defaults 0 1
Recently I bought an ssd, and made a new clean install(installed os-prober, updated grub.cfg with grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg), with the resulting fstab
/dev/sda1 / ext4 rw,relatime,noatime,nodiratime,discard,data=ordered 0 1 #new ssd
/dev/sdb1 /media/windows ntfs-3g defaults 0 1
/dev/sdb2 /media/oldroot ext4 defaults 0 1
/dev/sdb3 /media/oldhome ext4 defaults 0 1
"oldroot" (previous arch installation) boots ok (I changed the /media/oldroot/etc/fstab to the new sd# order)
windows (Win7) tries to boot (windows logo appears on screen), but after a few seconds the machine reboots.
Does anyone know how to make my old windows partition bootable (maybe I have to edit some windows files?)

Mount Flags
There are several key mount flags to use in one's /etc/fstab entries for SSD partitions.
noatime- Reading accesses to the file system will no longer result in an update to the atime information associated with the file. The importance of the noatime setting is that it eliminates the need by the system to make writes to the file system for files which are simply being read. Since writes can be somewhat expensive as mentioned in previous section, this can result in measurable performance gains. Note that the write time information to a file will continue to be updated anytime the file is written to with this option enabled.
discard - The discard flag will enable the benefits of the TRIM command as long as one is using kernel version >=2.6.33. It does not work with ext3; using the discard flag for an ext3 root partition will result in it being mounted read-only.
About my win7 non-booting thing, I'll try later this week to rearrange my drives.

    I recently bought my x120e with 64bit win7 home premium. I also bought an SSD (agility 2). After using recovery disks to 'restore' a 'factory install' to the new ssd, win7 works fine generally. Only problem is the win7 login and user account controls.
    First of all, it is not a factory restore. there was no lenovo software on board to speak of. It did not act like a 1st time run of win7 either, where one is usually prompted to create a user account and password. I'm instead logged in as Administrator automatically with no password. To force the login/password at startup, I assigned a password to the administrator account, then created new accounts for my wife and I with administrator privileges and passwords. On restart, I get a message that the password is invalid. Win7 is still autologging in under Administrator, but now it stops because whatever it thinks the password is, is wrong because I changed it.  If I say 'switch user' to use one of the newly created accounts, they are not visible at all on the logon screen. Just 'Administrator' and a blank user, no pic, no name.
    So....: Firstly, how do I stop win7 from trying to log on automatically?  (and why is it doing this?)   Secondly, why are my new user accounts not visible at startup, but visible in user account settings within windows?
    I'm using recovery media mailed to me by Lenovo today because the recovery partition that came with the machine was not working on arrival. Its nice in principal, but it if never works the way it should...

    I recommend you to remove the HDD to check if you can startup Windows 7 from SSD.
    If you cannot, please attempt to repair startup using Bootrec.exe command.

    Meanwhile I solved the problem as follows: I searched for "dreamweaver" everywhere an deleted everything I could find. Then I searched for "CS6" and did the same. I guess there were around 20 or more places where I deleted directorys or files. Suddenly the installation did not stop at 2 % what it always did before and the installation was a success :-) It cost me more than 4 hours to figure that out and I did not find a really helping hint somewhere. Adobe itself I could not contact because I could not find an email adress or a phone number - poor support for such an expensive software. For luck I did not have to deliver something just in time. Lacking a useful support is a really poor, poor attitude of Adobe... I think I will not buy anymore Adobe products - it could cost too much of my time... :-(

  • Clean Install of Mavericks on new SSD - Final Question

    I am looking for some help installing a new SSD into my mid-2010 Macbook Pro.  I have the 15 inch with i5 and 4GB of RAM.  last week I upgraded to 8GB of RAM, purchased from Crucial, and am about to install a MX100 512GB SSD also purchased from Crucial.  I have read about the issues with third party drives in Yosemite and because of this I will keep Mavericks until I learn more.
    My goal has been to get the new SSD into the computer and treat it like a brand new computer completely clean.  This I learned was considered a "Clean InstalI".  I am not very good with computers and sometimes the discussions I've read on the internet can generalize things and not define each step like a complete novice like me would need.  So I have done a lot of research and below have a step by step guide on how I intend to do a clean install of the operating system onto my new SSD.  I am looking for validation that this is correct or any steps I need to adjust. 
    I had asked a question about 2 months ago that lead me into the direction of doing the clean install.  Drew helped out quite a bit and got me started on researching what I need to do for this clean install.  There were some comments I had a question with.  His notes are in italics and my questions are in bold.  
    During install use Setup Assistant (it's basically the same as Migration Assistant).
    Connect the old HD (Can I connect to my external HD that backed up my old HD via Time Machine?) & choose the option to migrate the User account (leave the applications & other data disabled). (what happens if I opt to not do this step, not migrating User account information, what would be the Pros / Cons...  another basic question I guess would be what exactly is in these User Accounts... anything that if I did not migrate over would give me issues?)
    When completed you will have the same user on the new disk.
    The Applications are left on the old disk, it's better to reinstall them in my opinion.
    now on to by guide I compiled...
    My Step by Step guide that if confirmed on here I will move forward with!   Very excited and hope I got this correct.
    Create bootable MAC OS X Mavericks USB Flash Drive
    App Store - Download OS X Mavericks from PurchasesDone
    Now found in the Applications folder (leave right there)
    Plug in USB Flash drive (minimum 8gb)
    Go to UtilitiesLaunch Disc Utility
    Find USB Flash Drive on left hand side
    Format this drive
    Click on Erase (tab towards top)
    Format: Mac OS Etended (Journaled)
    Name: “installMavericks”
    Click Erase button at bottom
    Launch Terminal
    Copy and paste text below.  replace the red “Untitled” with the name of the USB drive (installMavericks) - case sensitive and keep the space after installMavericks
    click enter - put in password
    will take approx 20-30 minutes
    If message says Done I now have a USB drive with Mac OS X Mavericks right on itwhat happens if there is an issue?
    Text to put in terminal
    sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction
    Upgrade HD to SSD
    I have backed up my current HD on an external 1TB drive via Time MachineI plan to do a Fresh/Clean install of the Mac OS Mavericks.  I will individually bring over songs, pictures, movies, documents etc from the external HD that has the last x amount of my Time Machine Backups of current/soon to be old HD
    Open Macbook Case
    loosen two screws, pull the entire strip out.  The screws do not come out, only loosen
    Pull hard drive out with the clear strip of (paper?)
    careful, still connected to SATA cable
    once removed - use TORX screw driver to remove the 4 screws on the Hard drive and transfer them into the same spot on the SSD
    connect SSD to the SATA connector
    put the SSD back into its bay by lining up the 4 screws to the locations within the bay
    add back the strip that had the two screws from earlier.  tighten screws
    put case back on.
    Plug in USB into computer and turn on computer
    Will boot to the Mac OS Utilities
    go to “Disc Utility”Find SSD on the left
    go to Erase Tab to repartition
    Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    Name: example “new SSD”
    click erase at the bottom
    Exit out of Disc Utility
    go to “Reinstall OS X”Click continue
    go through the screens and menus…  (not sure what happens here)  assuming this is loading the OS Mavericks from the USB to new SSD
    after this step is the installation complete?
    what will be on the new SSD?
    iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, Garage Band, QuickTime player etcwill these need to be re-downloaded from the App store etc
    Logic Pro X, Toontracks, Fluenz etc.these I need to re-download from the sites using serial keys etc.  (I have decided to just buy the new Logic Pro X so that I can do the clean install and leave my old Logic Express behind where I have lost the disc that came with it)
    From here I can connect my external 1TB drive that had my previous HD backed up on it and pick and choose what songs, movies, pictures, documents etc that I want to drag onto my new SSD

    Your link makes very interesting reading. One thing that jumps out is how an old HD's installation and Time Machine are equated. Time Machine is a remarkable system, simple on the outside and complex under the hood (this is the fundamental resource on the subject, created by a Community member who is sorely missed). But it doesn't play well with certain types of files (virtual machine files for running Windows, etc., on a Mac for example) and has, in my experience at least, lost some files after briefly saving them. Your old HD, on the other hand, is both complete and current, making it a better source IMHO to migrate from.
    The point about older software no longer being compatible is well taken, but I tend to keep older versions long after newer versions appear and I've been surprised at how well they continue to function after the publisher insists they're no longer supported by a newer OS (and are sometimes better than what replaces them). And in the case of commercial software, associated files are often sprinkled far and wide, perhaps to prevent easy pirating. Moreover, while keeping track of serial numbers is always a good idea, many publishers limit the number of installations and entering the S/N over again usually involves the program phoning home to check on the installation count so far. Cloning avoids that more effectively than migrating.

  • Best way to clean install mountain lion on a new ssd

    Am in the process of upgrading my late 2008 MacBook Pro (15").  Have had 8 GB RAM installed for over a year now, as well as Lion, and it's doing fine but want to upgrade it some more to get another couple years out of it.  Have ordered a 120 GB SSD and will be installing it in place of the optical drive to speed up boot and programs access.  Also would like to upgrade to Mountain Lion IF it'll upgrade performance and add worthwhile features.  Assuming that's the case, is it best to do a clean install of Mountain Lion on the new SSD or just clone the existing hard drive?  What's the best technique for doing a clean install and for cloning? 

    Go to the App Store. Sign in with your Apple ID and password. Purchase and download Mountain Lion. It's over 4 GBs so it will take some time to download.
    When it finishes the installer will launch automatically and present you with a window for installing. I suggest you quit the installer at this point. Follow these instructions:
    Make Your Own Mountain/Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Mountain/Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Mountain/
        Lion application. After Mountain/Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button.
        Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Mountain/Lion installer. Move
        the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You
        must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes
        installing.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
      a. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
      b. After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left
          side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
      c. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one.    
          Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
          partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until
          the process has completed.
      d. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side
          list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      e. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the
          button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
      f. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash
         drive size.
    3. Use Lion DiskMaker 2.0 to put your installer clone onto the USB flash drive.
    Note: The term Mountain/Lion used above means Lion or Mountain Lion.
    You can then install your SSD. Boot the computer from the Mountain Lion USB flash drive to install onto the SSD after you partition and format the SSD:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Boot from Mountain Lion USB flash drive installer. When the main menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button.
    Boot Using OPTION key:
      a. Restart the computer.
      b. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
          "OPTION" key.
      c. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      d. Select the USB Flash Drive Installer.
      e. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button.   • Clean Install Yosemite onto new SSD (Also, what is TRIM?)

    I've been researching how to replace the Hard Drive on my Late 2011 13inch Macbook Pro (MacBookPro8,1 / 2.4 GHz / Intel Core i5 / SATA III) with a new SSD (maybe a Samsung 840 EVO) and clean install Yosemite onto it. I've found a few ways to do this on the support forums and the macrumors forum, but I want to confirm if I can do it this way:
    1. Plug new SSD into the Macbook via a USB cable
    2. Download Yosemite onto current Macbook Hard Drive. When I'm prompted to install, chose the new SSD from the list. Complete Installation.
    3. Remove old Hard Drive from Macbook and plug new SSD in it's place (and not in the optical bay).
    Would this work? I have another external hard drive with all of my documents, pictures and music on which I'm just going to manually remove over, and have no problem doing. I can also download the iLife programs directly from the App Store so I wouldn't be missing out on those either (I do have the iLife '09 discs too). I've also read about creating a bootable USB using DiskMaker X, but I feel the route I outlined would be easier.
    Am I missing anything? I do have the EFI Firmware v2.7, so the problems the 2011 MacBooks were having with SATA shouldn't be an issue during this. Also, during my research, I found a references to something called TRIM. Can someone explain TRIM to me?

    Thanks for the response and confirming I can clean install Yosemite onto a new SSD using the process I listed in my initial post.
    I have a 13'' MacBook Pro with Yosemite already installed onto it so my graphics card should be set. After almost a month of using it, I haven't noticed any issues on that end.
    I guess this TRIM thing is a totally separate subject from this thread. I read Apple is no longer supporting third-party SSD for TRIM support. If you turn it on, but keep a security feature on, you risk your computer not booting correctly. It looks like the only way to have TRIM enabled on a SSD using Yosemite is to have an Apple supplied SSD, or an SSD that can trick Yosemite into thinking it's Apple supplied (like the Angelbird Wrk for Mac SSD).
    I've also done a good amount of research that TRIM is only necessary if you're saving a lot of items to the hard drive in one sitting (like photoshop). I primarily use my Mac for Pages (which saves my documents into the cloud now), iTunes and Safari. I guess this would fit me into the "casual user' criteria? I've also read that if you don't use TRIM, your SSD uses "Garbage Collection" (which actually sounds terrible) to keep the SSD informed on what data can be overwritten since it's been deleted by the user. I read that most modern SSD hard drives have a pretty decent Garbage Collection function, so if you leave your computer idle, keep "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" unchecked, the SSD will run Garbage Collection on it's own and that should be sufficient enough to keep the SSD in good working order.

(A car ran me down while I was out getting exercise.) I installed the SSD because I needed my management of PDF files to run faster. I called tech support for help when the software first stopped working, but they needed me to give them a number from my original disks. Because of my disability, I've been having someone come in to clean, and the shelves where I kept my software packages were cleared. I've been hunting for them ever since, but I can't look for them myself for very long at a time. Today I finally found them, but now I can't seem to contact tech support. What happened? I don't want to delete my old files because I need the setup to remain unchanged, because I don't do well with changes. I think all I should need is to have someone located the license file on drive E: and move it to wherever it is needed on the SSD drive, but I don't know what to look for.

    Tech support is not normally available on weekends.  You should contact them as soon as the weekend passes and pick up where you left off with them.

    I recently upgraded all my computer internals; new mobo, Samsung SSD (solid state drive), CPU and ram. Also went from XP Pro to Win 7 Pro, with Win 7 Pro now residing on the new solid state drive. I still have the old 1TB Serial ATA hard drive connected as a storage device, and this is where CS5 resides. But of course, my CS5 applications are now unusable.
    Can someone please give me some guidance as to how to transfer the CS5 installation from the old HD (XP Pro) to the new SSD (Win 7 Pro)? I started doing some research, and read about first "deactivating" CS5, but I cannot open any of my CS5 applications to "deactivate". So I am stumped. I am reticent to attempt a new install from my CS5 disks until I learn the proper process..........
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    There is no problem. If no previous, activated software is detected on the system, the upgrade installer will simply revert to its secondary mode and request to input the old serial in a second step for verification. Unless you do some exotic crossgrade/ sidegrade stuff, this should work with no problems whatsoever.

    I am currently running Snow Leopard on my 2011 iMac from a 120Gb SSD.  I will be replacing the 120Gb SSD with a 240Gb SSD this weekend, and I believe it might be a good time to upgrade to OS X Lion.  I would prefer a clean install of Lion on the new SSD, and intend to do this through the Internet Recovery feature, but I have some concerns.
    1. When should I purchase Lion? Can I purchase it during the Internet Recovery proceedure, or do I need to purchase it before hand? 
    2. When I performed a clean Snow Leopard install on the original SSD, I deliberately abandoned the additional printer drivers and language packs to conserve space.  Will I have this option with the Internet installation of Lion? 
    3. Is it possible to burn a recovery disc of Lion once it's up and running?
    4. Can I restore my Snow Leopard Time Machine backup to Lion?

    Internet recovery is not available until Lion is installed on a machine.  You can
    purchase Lion and then download it but do not start the installer.  Follow the

    Not sure of this one as I never use Time Machine.  You could get
    an external SATA->USB adapter and connect the old drive and use Migration

All are checked to sync.  During sync, it gets to "determining apps to sync"  then immediately goes to "finished syncing".   No apps or podcasts from my Mac itunes are on the touch 4G.

    You can only sync to one iTunes library but you can manage music and videos among different computer/libraries.
    It appears that you are trying to sync with a different library.
    - If you want to make the Mac you syncing computer:
    --- Connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup by:
    iOS: How to back up
    --- Restore the iPod from that backup. Note that synced media like apps and music are not in included in the backup.

Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the SSD drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your SSD drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and size) from the
          left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Select one
          partition from the dropdown menu under Partition Scheme.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on
          the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button. Be sure to point the installer to the SSD and not your startup drive. Click on the Install button.
    Remove the SSD from the external enclosure and install it in the computer.
    Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
                because it is three times faster than wireless.

    I have a new Corsair GT SSD sata 3 drive on my mack book, I have read on corsair web page that is good tho activate the AHCI and TRIM but I cant find information about how to do this on OS X.

    That's information for non-Apple hardware. You can activate TRIM using third-party software: TRIM Enabler 2.2. However, most new SSDs should not need TRIM activated on the Mac.

    Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
    Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
    Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
    Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
                if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
    This will install the version of OS X that originally came with your model if you have a model that supports Internet Recovery - 2010 models and later: Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery.

    Recently I purchased a Samsung 840 EVO SSD for my Late 2011 MacBook Pro. I removed the optical drive from my device and repositioned the original HDD into an optical drive caddy and added my SSD where the HDD was originally.
    What I now want to do is reinstall OS X 10.9.1 onto my SSD which is named "Samsung SSD". I have backed up my computer using Time Machine. I restarted my computer and held down CMD+R  and clicked on the prompt to reinstall OSX onto my new SSD. About an hour after it started reinstalling it said it could not as the device was damaged... it is brand new and was treated very carefully, i am certain it is not damaged. Am I doing something wrong????? PLEASE HELP
