Clean out my imac

What would be the least painful way to go about cleaning out my Imac. I have a 1Tb HD and it's almost completely full and it's affecting the performance of my Imac. I'm not the saviest on the Apple computer and I'm still learning... Please help!

To help "clean out" large files you do not need, you can use a utility like this one
http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net/
which visually shows large files taking up most of the space.  Finding the largest files that you no longer need (and deleting them) is the fastest way to clear out some space initially, before digging further.
One place to look would be your Downloads folder.  There are probably many files there that you no longer need.  A good way to look there is to use the List view and sort by Size or by Kind.
Your iTunes Media folder may be taking up a large amount of space.  If you want to get an external hard drive and put your iTunes Media folder there, this article provides instructions.
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449
You are basically setting a new location for your iTunes Media folder (on the external drive) and telling iTunes to consolidate your iTunes files to the new location.  Once you are sure everything go copied over, you can delete the iTune Media Folder on your internal drive, and free up that space.
If Grand Perspective identifies other larger files that you want to keep but don't access very often, and they collectively are taking up significant space, you can also manually copy those files to the external drive using Finder.
Be sure to have a good backup plan.  For example, you can use the built-in Time Machine. You should have a separate external hard drive for the Time Machine backup archive.

  • I downloaded Lion on my iMac.  It apparently cleaned out the hard drive.  Nothing shows up from before.  It looks like a brand new computer.  It is backed up on Time machine.  Any idea of why this happened and suggestions on restoring?  Thanks.

I downloaded Lion on my 4 yr old iMac.  The download stalled at the last minute so I clicked "CANCEL".  When it was restarted, Lion was there, with no apparent option but to go ahead and install so I assumed it was okay.  Didn't transfer data from "another computer" when prompted - assumed it would transfer from that computer.  It apparently cleaned out the hard drive.  It looks like a brand new computer.  None of my apps, programs,  files, or thousands of photos.   It is backed up on Time machine, but it's a sickening sight.  Any idea why this happened and suggestions before restoring?  Thanks.

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

  • My four year old iMac is running much slower than when it was new.  Any suggestions on cleaning out the cob webs?

My four year old iMac is running much slower than when it was new.  Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to "clean it up" and get it running like it used to?

What year, screen size, CPU speed and amount of RAM installed?
To find out info about your system,
Click on the Apple symbol in the upper left of the OS X main menu bar. A drop down menu appears.
Click About this Mac. A smaller popup window appears. This gives you basic info like what version of OS X your iMac is running, the speed of your iMac's CPU and how much RAM is installed.
Click on the button that says More Info. A larger window appears giving you a complete overview of your iMac's hardware specs.
Highlight all of this info and copy/paste all of this into another reply to this post, editing out your iMac's serial number before actually posting the reply.
This will tell us everything about your iMac so we may begin to help with your iMac issues.
How full is your Mac's hard drive?
Locate your iMac's hard drive icon on the OS X desktop. Click the icon once, then use the keyboard key combination Command-I. This will give you additonal info about your iMac's internal hard drive.
Post this info in your reply here, also.
Here are some general tips to keep your Mac's hard drive trim and slim as possible
You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
To find other large files, download an app called Omni Disk Sweeper.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • With all the games coming out for iMacs what Gaming Pad or Jotstick works with the Imac

With all the games coming out for iMacs what Gaming Pad or Jotstick works with the Imac

Now the bad news. In my "Print to Video" pop up, if
I select "Color Bars" , "Black", or any other option
and take out my bars and tone and slug from the
timeline, the print to video does not print anything
to tape except for a nice nothing blue. I don't
even get my actual timeline video printed to tape.
    Jerry,
You are a genius! Man do I feel silly. So just for the benefit of others who might read this post, I did exactly as you said, and of course when I restarted FCP, I had to identify my Firewire NTSC setting for the drive. This time, instead of leaving my tapedrive offline, I left it on and immediately saw on my drive monitor the video coming off of my timeline.
Every thing works perfect. I now have a clean timeline with just the content I'm working on and don't have to worry about bars, slugs, post black. Just a few checkboxes and I'm ready to send my tapes off. Really nice feature.
    Thanks!

  • Cleaning dust from imac

I was cleaning my imac today and noticed a significant amount if dust accumulated at the air vents on the back. I vacuumed these out, but Im wondering if it is ever necessary to open the machine and clean out the dust. Is there a filter of some sort on the inside? should I use compressed air and just try to blow out the vents from the outside? Just wondering what a good practice is to keep the dust out of my machine?

    Hi there,
Your machine has been well engineered to limit the amount of dust build up inside, however through time dust will build up, to be honest just blowing air in doesn't really work. Unless you really know what you are doing then i don't advise opening the unit up to clean it out.

If I have understood you correctly, you will have to reinstall 10.5.   Then you can update (free) to 10.5.8 via Apple Software updates or the Combo updater below.

I am trying to hold onto my iMac5 (Intel Duo Core) as long as I can. It is running very slow and I would like to clean out older software--previous versions of pages, for example. Can I uninstall all these older versions without impacting current files? And how do I uninstall so that everything is gone? Thanks.

  • Screen Cleaner for New iMac

What is a good screen cleaner for the new iMac? I've tride normal glass cleaner and it is a glass screen but i seemed to just make a mess. Please help!

" Never use Windex or equivalent products."
I'll second this suggestion. When I first cleaned my new 2013 21.5" iMac, I used
a "windex" type cleaner, and it made a mess (streaked and everything).  I actually though it was so bad that I had damaged the screen.  Fortunately, with water and a microfiber cloth I was able to clean off the "windex" streaking.
The thing is, the new 2013 iMac screen covering is more "plastic like" in material, and not as "glass like" in materials (as previous iMacs may have been), so it may be easier to damage (scratch) the screen surface if care isn't taken.
Always use a soft microfiber cloth (preferably with no sewed cloth edges - find a seamless edge microfiber cloth), to clean the new iMac screens.
If you need to, this "auto" microfiber cloth is one of the best:
    Mothers Ultra-Soft Polishing Cloth 16"x16" - Mothers MOT-155200
They are a hard to find style and are "no seam edgeless" style ... meaning they don't have a threaded sewed edge. Often many cheap microfiber cloths are made using a polyester sewing thread around tghe four outer edges, and even though the microfiber cloth itself may not scratch .... the four sided sewed edges can really scratch badly without knowing it.

Many times my computer takes too long to connect to new website. Upgrading speed from cable network? is it a hard drive issue? do I only need to "clean out" the computer? Or all of the above...not to computer saavy.  It is a Macbook Pro  osx 10.6.8 (late 2010).

Almost certainly none of the above!  Try each of the following in this order:
Select 'Reset Safari' from the Safari menu.
Close down Safari;  move <home>/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db to the trash; restart Safari.
Change the DNS servers in your network settings to use the OpenDNS servers: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
Turn off DNS pre-fetching by entering the following command in Terminal and restarting Safari:

  • When playing games on facebook, I often get the message "virtual memory too low, is being increased" Is there something I can do to clean out the "virtual memory" to avoid this?

As mentioned in my question above, it happens usually during playing games. I wondered if there were someway to clean out the virtual memory, as opposed to it "increasing" continually and overloading my memory in general. You are speaking with a computer novice for the most part, so I am unfamiliar with a lot. I do do updates and general maintenance on the computer, but is that enough for this issue?

Physical memory is the memory that is installed on your computer as real memory. To be able to run programs that require more memory and more programs at the same time (via time sharing and task switching) it is also possible to move (swap) currently not needed code and data to disk to make room for other programs and data. The total memory available for programs is the Virtual Memory.
You can check the Virtual Memory settings here: Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance > Settings (Advanced tab)<br />
Windows can manage more memory then is physical available and that memory is stored in a page file on your hard drive.
If the size of that file is not large enough and all available memory is in use then you get the Virtual Memory is low warning.
Make sure that you have at least 1 GB or the recommended setting for the Virtual Memory.
If you have less than 1 GB physical memory installed on your computer then if possible add more memory.
