Clean re-install Lion mid 2008 MBA

I have a MBA which I think is 'mid 2008' pedigree. Something like that, anyway. 2GB RAM. 1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. That sort of thing.
Since putting Lion on it, it seems to have slowed down. Spinning beach balls all over the shop.
I've done all the usual stuff, permissions etc.
So here's the thing. Is it worth my doing a complete clean re-install of Lion? The sort that deletes everything on your laptop (I've backed it up already.)
Doing this is a bit of a chore, but I'm sure I can figure it out. Just I don't want to do it unless it's likely to achieve the result I want - i.e. a slightly less clogged-up MBA.
Ta.

To answer briefly.
On the short term: yes. it will make it faster.
On the long run: no. It will slow down again once you give it some use.
Lion is slower than Snow Leopard on these models, it makes them run hot, beachball more often and shaves around an hour of battery life.

  • Installed Lion on 2008 MBP, Won't Power Up

Istalled Lion today on my 2008 MacBook Pro 15",
    4Gb RAM ( Patriot Memory 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 667),
    Snow Leopard (latest version).
However, now when I press the power button the computer turns on for a split second and then shuts down immediatley with a *beep* sound.
Battery was fine earlier today, and I have tried taking it out. Laptop is plugged in as well.
I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this as I can't get to any diagnostic tools.

I agree it may well be hard to understand.
But the symptoms you report are consistent with RAM issues. The Mac won't proceed beyond the point you describe until RAM has been verified and baci hardware tests complete - then you get the grey screen..
"Once the screen turns grey the hardware tests are complete, and the Mac looks for a boot volume.  Software now dominates  the startup process. ..."
    Which came from here.
Do you have the original RAM that came with the MBP??
If so try re-installing it to see what happens.
If it works well we know what the problem is.
If not, well there is some even more fundamental problem on the logic board.

  • Which first? Install Lion or Restore Settings?

We're shuffling computers around at work during a hardware/software overhaul.  I'm preparing an iMac currently running 10.6 for use by another coworker.  I plan to install 10.7 Lion (high as it can go) on the computer and want to run recovery mode and wipe it clean.  It currently contains all matter of programs, plugins, add-ons etc. that we do not need.
My question is: Should I upgrade to Lion, then do the retore? Do the restore first and then upgrade?  Or does it matter either way?
I had thought I would just restore it, then do the install of Lion, but the things I'm reading are making me wonder if that's possible ... if after the restore it'll automatically reinstall 10.6..
So, I though perhaps I should do the upgrade first, but then wondered if it would make a difference..
    Thanks for any help/suggestions!

If you wanted to wipe it clean to install Lion what you can do is update 10.6 to 10.6.8 to have Mac Appstore to be able to download the Mountain Lion App Upgrade. Download the Mountain Lion App. After the download dont proceed for the upgrade install. Go to your Downloads folder and Look for the Mountain Lion App. Back that up on a separate disk. You can use that to create a bootable ML OS. You will need an external hard drive (with no files on or with a mac partition ready for the installer atleast 10gb or a flash drive atleast 16gb. After creating the bootable Installer you can wipe and install a fresh ML OS.
Once you’ve purchased Mountain Lion, you can find the installer on your Mac. It’s called Install OS X Mountain Lion.app and should be downloaded to your main Applications folder (/Applications).
Right-click (or Control+click) the installer, and choose Show Package Contents from the resulting contextual menu.
In that folder that, open Contents, then open Shared Support. You’ll see a disk image file called InstallESD.dmg. Copy that to your desktop.
Open Disk Utility and go to RESTORE tab
Drag the InstallESD.dmg disk image into the bottom (empty area) of Disk Utility’s sidebar (on the left).
In Disk Utility, select InstallESD.dmg in the sidebar, and then click the Open button in the toolbar to mount the disk image’s volume in the Finder. The mounted volume is called Mac OS X Install ESD, and it also appears below InstallESD.dmg in Disk Utility.
Select Mac OS X Install ESD in Disk Utility’s sidebar, then click the Restore button (if ever you got out of the tab) in the main part of the window.
Drag the Mac OS X Install ESD icon into the Source field on the right (if it isn’t already there).
Connect to your Mac the properly formatted hard drive Extrenal Drive or flash drive you want to use for your bootable Mountain Lion installer.
In Disk Utility, find this destination drive in the left-hand sidebar and then drag it into the Destination field on the right. (If the destination drive has multiple partitions, just drag the partition you want to use as your bootable installer volume.) Warning: The next step will erase the destination drive or partition, so make sure it doesn’t contain any valuable data.
Click Restore, and then Erase in the dialog box that appears; if prompted, enter an admin-level username and password.
It takes 5 or more minutes to finish depending on your machines speed. Good luck!

  • I can't install Lion on my macbook Air 'cause i have any cluster damaged.. Any help ?

I've tried to install lion on my MBA but i can't select the internal Hdd cause there are any cluster damaged and the Os can't select that drive. How can I do to solve this problem ?

You need to boot from your install disk or thumb drive (turn the computer on while holding down the "C" key). It will look like you are reinstalling the operating system. Look at the menu bar, you will see Utilities. Can't remember the exact menu path, but you are looking for Disk Repair or Repair Disk. Select your bad drive and chances are pretty good the software will repair the drive. Then reboot normally and your install will likely work. If not, it's off to the Genius Bar.

  • How can I re-install lion via usb drive on my new mba(mid-2011)?

how can I re-install lion via usb drive on my new mba(mid-2011)?
I just removed all data from main hd, and my network is not good enough to be able to download the os via recovery hd re-installing way.
in other words, is there a bootable [mac os x lion dmg] for my mba that I can download?

If you are looking for a download link for OS X Lion, I do not know of one. However if you really need the operating system you can buy a USB drive with OS X Lion on it, ready to boot. I think they're $69 at Apple's store. What I would do is contact AppleCare via the Express Lane or just call them and tell them your situation and then they will definantly have an answer for you to point you in the right direction.
    Good luck!

  • Installing Lion clean on hard drive with multiple partitions

I have a spring 2008 24" iMac running Snow Leopard.
I am about to put a new 2TB hard drive in it and after I do that I want to do a clean install of Lion on it.
I do not want to upgrade my Snow Leopard install to Lion. I will keep it on my back up drive as a fallback incase of serious workflow incompatiblities with the new OS.
For my workflow I create and use multiple partitions (Mac OS,  Windows and multiple HFS+ for data) on my hard drive and I have seen that Lion creates it's own hidden recovery partition as well for the recovery functionality.
    My questions are:
    1) Will I have issues running Lion on a partition on a hard drive with multiple partitions that have different file systems?
    2) If I install Lion into one of these partitions will it create it's recovery partition within the space of the partition it is being installed into?
    3) I will be creating a clean install by downloading Lion using the App Store and then burning an installer DVD using instructions I found elsewhere and then using that to do the install on the new drive. Is that the best route to take?
All my current data I will have on a backup external hard drive and after I complete the Lion install on the new larger drive I will manually reinstall all my software and move my data back from my backup drive to the new drive one partition at a time except of course for OS partition. I keep all my real user data outside of that partition anyway.

I believe this article answers most of your questions.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
    or possibly
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4649
You will most likely run into the error message that "Some features of Mac OS X Lion are not supported for the disk" if you have multiple partitions set up, especially if they were not set up using Bootcamp and/or have serveral different file systems.
You can confirm that the Recovery Partition will not be installed by checking Disk Utility for your current partition map scheme.
This is most definitely not the end of the world as it is quite easy to create an external Recovery disk.
    1) No, you shouldn't have issues running Lion, but Recovery HD will not be created.
    2) No, and in your case it doesn't sound like it will be installed on your internal drive at all.
    3) Yes. If you begin with an empty partition, then install Lion that would be considered a clean install.
    Hope that helps.

  • Macbook Air with no OSX (Mid 2011) ... cannot install Lion nor Snow Leopard

I have a Macbook Air with no OSX (Mid 2011) ... and I cannot install Lion nor Snow Leopard.
I purchased this Macbook Air 13" and found that the OS had been wiped off. Since then I've been able to get the Recovery Disk Assistant to get me into the Recovery Partition on the MBA... but when I try the "Reinstall Mac OS X" from within Mac OS X Utilities, the download fails after 30 sec. and I get the error message, "Could not find installation information for this machine. Contact Apple Care". This MBA is still covered under Apple's Applecare, but the nearest Apple Store is 3 hrs away and from what I've read, they may not be able to help me.
I know all about Build 11A2063 but cannot figure out where or how to get that.
Also, I've tried making a bootable Lion Drive from my Mac Mini onto a flashdrive, but this too did not work on the MBA (I assume because it isn't Build 11A2063).
I have a huge expensive paper weight with no idea of where to go from here. Any help would be much appreciated.

Where did you buy an MBA without an operating system?  Was this from another individual who took the liberty to remove the Mac OS X before selling it to you?
You might try calling Apple customer support and have them walk you through the process, as they can figure out just what version of the OS should be on that machine.

  • Clean installed Lion 3 times, still has incredible slow down.

I'm no stranger to this kind of stuff, so I've really never had any purpose to post here. I've always figured it out. So when I say I'm stumped, please know I mean it.
I recently purchased an OCZ Solid 3 120GB SSD and decided to install Lion and do it by way of a clean install. Everything went fine until I actually started to use it. I let it index, knowing that slows things down incredibly. But even when that was done I still would get the beach ball frequently and things would just stop until it was done spinning.
I've verified permissions, repaired them even though it came up with no errors. I started over a total of three times so far. I've searched the forums and google high and low. Still find nothing concerning my issue. I have a late 2008 unibody Macbook Pro with a 2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo and 4Gbs of RAM, so I know I'm good on the hardware front.
Any suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

  • Clean install Lion with Snow Leopard DVD

I want to perform a clean install of my Macbook Pro, currently running the latest version of Lion, upgraded from Snow Leopard via the App Store). When performing a clean install I have to use my Snow Leopard DVD. After this installation is completed, do I have to purchase the Lion upgrade again in the App Store?
I want to add a second hard disk (replacing the DVD with an SSD) in my Macbook Pro 17" (mid 2010). When I mount the root (/) on the SSD and /Home to my current hard disk, is it still possible to perform a restore instead of a clean install?
    Any suggestions/remarks are welcome.

Not exactly.  Time Machine looks for compatible Drive Partitions, it does not care what folders you have on that drive or what the current working folder is.  When doing a recovery, TM will first install a virgin copy of Lion, then it will give you a list of all the backed up data it found on your backup drive so you can decide what gets installed (likely everything).  Then you reboot, login and run Software Update.
You do not need that SSD.  In fact, I don't reccomend it.  All you need is a blank USB or Firewire drive.  Jack it into your MAC and install Lion on it.  Then you can boot from that drive and do whatever you want to your main disk.
Lion creates 2 partitions.  One is small and holds the installer and the usual utilities.  Great idea, but if your drive ever fails or has a partition problem your toast.  So I always make a DVD.  Use Google to find instructions on how to make it.
You don't need to install or boot 10.6 to do any of this.
There are reasons you would need to wipe your disk and start over.  But these reasons are very few.  Don't make a lot of work for yourself if you don't have to.

  • Mid-2010 27" iMac very slow, even after clean OS install - HELP!

Good afternoon guys, I'm hoping someone can offer me some advice.
I bought my Mid-2010 27" iMac in May-ish 2011. Everything was brilliant, I couldn't believe the ease of use, and especially the start up speed, coming from a world of PCs. My iMac was used almost every day, for web browsing, photo editing, etc.
Maybe about April / May this year it started becoming very slow, slow to boot, slow to respond to mouse clicks, slow to do anything. Since I'd used about 750GB of my HDD (mainly photos), I decided I would archive some and hope that would ease the congestion. As my photos were stored in Aperture, it took about 3 days to export them all to my external HDD, 3 days of the iMac only getting so far, switching itself off, then me finally getting it to come back on (I was getting messages about Kernals, etc. now and again through boot too) - it finally backed up my photos I have from my daughters first year.
Great news, but I still had probably 400GB / 500GB of photos from her second year and any other photos I'd taken. I found the root of my Aperture directory, and managed to pull these images off, so everything is now backed up.
I decided I should try and clean install, and managed to get the HDD to boot and choose the option to re-install from Apple's Servers. All installed OK, and we're good to go! Fired up the iMac, and although it's fractionally quicker to respond, and a lot more stable, it's not quite right. And I've lost all my iLife Apps which originally came with the iMac.
Does this sound like a HDD issue? As I say, it was on quite a lot through the backup procedure, and I had set it (maybe stupidly looking back now) to never sleep, and for the monitor to only switch off after 3 hours. Or does it sound like something more is wrong with it?
I am quite confident of working with PCs, so would manage to replace the HDD I think, looking at some videos, etc. online. I did upgrade the RAM to 16GB, and that was simple enough. My question is, when you replace the HDD, how does it know where to look to the Apple Servers for the clean OS install? Or do I have to do something to let it know where to look first? I have to point out I don't have any Time Machine backup, etc. as the iMac was just not stable enough to get this in place - and up until that point, again probably stupid now looking back, I had never bothered to set up.
Any help / advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated. At the moment I have totally fallen out of love with the iMac, for something to cost £1,500+ and only last 3 years, where my last build PC lasted Approx 8 years for half the price, is very disappointing.
    Thanks in advance,
    Col

Just suggesting things right off the bat here-
To me it sounds as though the HDD is failing, if your iMac shipped with a Seagate drive try entering your serial number to see if Apple will replace it:http://www.apple.com/au/support/imac-harddrive/
Or try running Apple Hardware Test a few times back to see if it is a hardware error.
As for the iLife apps they should've come on one of the install discs that shipped with your mac.
If your iMac is ineligible for the program above I would consider replacing it yourself with either an SSD or HDD, as for recognising apples servers for download, you will need the original install discs that came with your computer or if you haven't already it will need a firmware update to enable internet recovery
See here:Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery
    Good Luck!

I have a BT Infinity router plugged into the Time Capsule, not sure where the radio settings are?
They are able to use the network settings of the TC i.e. they can connect to the internet via the wifi through the TC but when they try and connect to the AirPort Disk this is where it is not allowing a connection.
I don;t have the drive shared out at all at the moment, is this necessary?  How do I do this if so?
I have attached the screen shots of all the settings.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • How to install a clean copy of Lion on my mac book pro

Since installing Lion on my Mac Book Pro June 2011 17 inch model I have had nothing but problems. I would like to wipe mt HD and start again with a completely clean copy of Lion. How do I do this ?

    Read this:

Download again, move the existing file out of the applications folder first.

  • System discs recovery and fully clean out a Lion install?

I just got an iMac, i7 - 27" 2.93GHz (used) - this box originally ships with Snow OS and Applications Install discs.  (but problems with the Apps disc and no Lion install included)
The seller had upgraded to Lion on it and wiped a lot of stuff clean but - didn't do a clean install so there's some residual stuff (keychain and other) I would like to wipe out.  (It ships with Snow and I have no Lion install currently).
    1. Is there a way to fully uninstall *everything* from a past Lion user - including their Home -
    a) without completely reformatting the drive
    b) also - without a Lion installer of any kind - but wanting to keep the existing Lion OS in place
The box arrived and the System Discs were loose with the keyboard and trackpad flying around in the box causing damage to the Applications Install Disc.  Both Disk Utility and Toast11 fail to make backups or Image files due to read errors - (backups are the first thing I always do with System Discs).
    2.  I have the Applications Install Disc from my 2010 MacBook Pro - will it work in place of the iMac's?  None with my 2011 Mini :-( and I sold the '09 Mini.
    3.  Does Apple have any kind of replacement disc policy/program short of buying them all over again?  ($$$expensive?)
    a)  This iMac has Applecare through most all of 2013 - would it help for replacement discs?
    Thanks!

First off, copying the original discs is prohibited unless you own the correct discs and use the restore directions on http://www.macmaps.com/bootcd.html
I do not know if those directions work with the Snow Leopard installer.
However, once installed you can make a clone*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
If the discs don't boot with an Option key boot, he sent you the wrong discs.
Apple will replace the original discs typically at about $20 per disc.
Macs that shipped with Lion originally don't have 10.6 compatibility except a few listed at the bottom of:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2455
If they aren't compatible with those discs, if Lion was installed, there is a way to restore Lion from the installed Lion restore partition, as mentioned on my backup page above.   Macs that can't install Snow Leopard, but can install Lion do not ship with any discs, as the restore partition is already there.
