Clean re-install of OSX Yosemite

Hello,
For the first time in my short OSX lifetime (6 years) I am considering re-installing OSX om my Mac. I have been extremely happy to be able to upgrade from release to relase and not waste time in re-installing.
Unfortunately, since I have upgraded to Yosemite, my MBP has been running much slower despite my very good specs (MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013), 2,8 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3)
I upgraded from OSX 10.9x to 10.10 from App Store. Unsatisfied with performance, I re-installed OSX booting from Recovery but keeping my original apps & files. Did not help that much.
Now I am considering a totally clean install (format Hard Disk and install Yosemite from an USB key or such) as suggested in many posts.
My questions are:
1) Is this really necessary? Will it make a real difference? Why?
2) Is there any way to manually investigate and clean the cause of performance problems?
3) If I do a clean install, is there any easy way to bring all my apps, documents and configuration over the clean install without re-introducing the cause of slowliness? I would really like avoiding re-installing all my software
Thanks a lot for any input

Hello bramfrommaastricht,
Here is the output, please note that first time I run it my Mac crashed and restarted. I have the crash log if you are interested. (long time since I had may mach crash)
One more comment, in the report you will see that Clean My Mac is installed and I know that most people suggest removing it. I have used CleanMyMac without problems in all my OSX releases. After I installed Yosemite, I removed it (using EtreCheck to ensure all components were deleted) and it did not help at all. I can do it again if you think is necessary.
Thanks for your time

  • I did a clean re-install of OSX Mountain Lion...lost iPhoto, garageband.... how do I get it back?

I just perform a clean reinstall of my OSX, everything went well, however, I just realized that i Lost the iPhoto and garageband app. How do I get it back? Please advise.

You should know that OS X hasn't got iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand preinstalled, so you have to install them manually after reinstalling OS X.
If your Mac didn't come with DVDs or you purchased those apps in the App Store, open App Store > Purchases, and download iPhoto and GarageBand.
If your Mac came with DVDs or you didn't purchase those apps in the App Store, insert the Applications DVD or Mac OS X Install Disc 2 that came with your Mac, and install iLife applications. Then, open  > Software Update to install the latest version

Alternatively, you can boot into internet recovery (option + command + R) and proceed from there (versus creating a bootable installer).

  • Aperture no longer works with new osx Yosemite update

I installed new OSX Yosemite update and now it says that my Aperture App. will not work with this version. What can be done other than updating Aperture?

    Hi,
    It's a five step process
Call Apple Support for Software > Aperture
Answer questions at recorded message (have Aperture serial number ready – it is on a sticker on the back of the 'Installing Your Software' booklet) and you will be transferred to a real person.
Inform them of the issue and they will tell you that this is a known issue with certain users and they will request a 'Redemption Code' for the App Store for a standalone download of Aperture. The issue will be rectified in the next Yosemite release.
Wait for email from Support (they have to contact Support in California for redemption code, so depending on your time zone, there may be some delay).
Visit App Store, enter redemption code, and you are good to go.
    Hope this helps.

Slow performance after installing Yosemite on an older Mac is often caused by inadequate memory. Although you can install the upgrade on a Mac with 2 GB of memory, experience has shown that at least 4 GB is needed for full performance.
Select About This Mac from the Apple menu. If you have less than 4 GB of memory, and your model has upgradable memory, install as much as it can take, or at least that much. Any reputable RAM vendor will have a web form in which you can select the Mac model and be directed to compatible parts.
Memory in the MacBook Air is not upgradable. If that's what you have, you should restore the previous system from a backup, or replace the machine. Ask if you need guidance.
The Etrecheck report clearly shows that SylvieRose has a Macbook Pro, not a Macbook Air and that there are only 2 GB  RAM installed.  The Etrecheck report can be very informative if one takes the time to examine it.
    Ciao.

  • OSX Yosemite Wi-Fi: no hardware installed

    Hi ASC:
I installed Yosemite about 2 weeks ago, and at first my wi-fi (at home & work) was working fine, but then about a week ago the Wi-Fi icon at the top of the toolbar got an "X" in the middle of it and when I click on the Wi-Fi icon it says, "No hardware installed". I tried resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own (from another thread) but no luck. I've googled this, YouTube-ed it, but still no Wi-Fi back. Someone PLEASE help
    I'm using:
    OSX Yosemite
    10.10.1
    MacBook Pro (15-inch, early 2011)
    Thank you.

In some cases, this issue is caused by a hardware fault. A loose connection, a short circuit, or a microscopic break in a solder joint may open and close depending on temperature, making the failure intermittent.
Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already taken. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. If you can connect to the Internet via Ethernet, Bluetooth, or a USB network device, make sure all available OS X updates are installed. If Wi-Fi is your only means of network access, skip this step.
2.. There are a few reports that the problem was solved by unchecking the box marked
              Wake for Wi-Fi network access
in the Power Adapter tab of the Energy Saver preference pane. I can't confirm.
    3. Reset the NVRAM.
    4. Reset the System Management Controller.
    5. Start up in Recovery mode. In the menu bar of the OS X Utilities screen, there's a Wi-Fi menu. Try to connect. If it works, select Install OS X. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

  • How can I return to use OSX (Yosemite) after installing Windows 8.1?

How can I return to use OSX (Yosemite) after installing Windows 8.1?
I cannot find Boot Camp on my iMac (late 2013) with windows installed. So I downloaded it, but I cannot run it because of an error (x64...). I tried to use my USB stick with bootcamp installed but nothing. When I turn my iMac on it starts automatically with windows. I tried to search it, but I found only the setup and it doesn't work. How can I get back to my APPLE iMac? How can I use OSX?
Excuse me for the (maybe) uncorrect language, I speak Italian.

    Hello!
You can start your Mac up with the [alt] (sometimes [option]) key pressed and you will get the Startup Manager.

remove your caps database.  this shows the location for cs3.  make the obvious changes for cs5.

  • How to format & clean reinstall OSX Yosemite?

My MacBook Pro has the iWorm. Deleted the folders suspected of iWorm (JavaW) and restored host file. Thinking of formatting and clean install of Yosemite back.
I suspect I got the iWorm from pirated Adobe software, and others.
I've checked my backup in Time Machine and I suspect all of it has the same thing going on with the iWorm.
Nothing much that is important in my computer other than music, some school projects and photos. Can I just copy what I deem important and then reformat and reinstall Yosemite? And if I do all that, do I have to re-register back my data about the MacBook, like registering my MacBook's serial key etc?
    Thanks

Is there another way besides using a thumb drive? Not having one currently.
Can I just erase the hard drive via Disk Utility or reset back to factory settings, and then download Yosemite through App Store and install again?

  • Re instating GarageBand '09 after a clean install of OSX Mavericks

I have a Time Machine back up of my entire hard disk, and because of a couple of suspected system wide issues, I decided to do a clean reinstallation of OSX Mavericks, and reinstall GarageBand X. That all went very well, my HD cleaned up and reformatted fine, OSX Mavericks installed flawlessly, and I began reinstalling Applications, files and folders. I have now run into a problem with the legacy version of Garageband '09, which, on reinstalling from the TM back up, did not simply transfer to the new Applications folder in a working form. Previous to my HD clean up/reinstallation, it had worked pretty well. Now it simply won't open, and I get an error message telling me it cannot find a valid instrument library.
Here is the error message:  The Instrument Library is invalid. GarageBand expects a valid Instrument Library folder in /Library/Application Support/GarageBand. Please choose a valid Instrument Library folder or quit and re-install GarageBand.
I do have a copy of the software installation DVD that shipped with my Mac, so in theory I could reinstall GarageBand '09, but I found that, on trying this, although the software 'installed', Garageband still will not open..
I could do a clean reinstall of Snow Leopard, along with it's associated software, iLife '09, then 'update' to Mavericks and re download Garageband X, which, in theory, would solve the problem, having started with a 'clean slate', but that's a lot of trouble, with a lot of downloading..
Any ideas? I'd be grateful for any possible alternative options..
    Thanks,
    Ontradio :-)

    Hi leonie,
It looks like once my computer was subject to a clean install of OSX Mavericks, programs installed with iLife, i.e. iWeb, GarageBand. iPhoto, etc, were removed from my HD and cannot now be reinstalled.. I form the impression that they are not on the installation DVD's that shipped with my computer, and having examined the disks by placing them in my machine, there is no way I can tell whether that is correct, since there is no 'button' that allows me to look for their presence on the disks.
If you can shed any light on that conclusion, I'd be grateful for any advice you could offer. I guess it's not super imperitive that I have GarageBand '09, I can get by without it, but it would have been nice to have, and a couple of my songs use loops that were from GB '09, and these are now absent from the songs when played back in GB X. Of course, I cannot download the '09 version from the App store. Looks like Apple has me borked!
Thanks for your help, anyway, I'm always pleased to see your name here..
    Regards, Ontradio..

Your case may be simpler to resolve. You do not have the MBR entry for Windows.
Do you a NTFS header "R.NTFS" when you run the following command in Terminal?
    sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s4 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

  • Can't Install OSX Yosemite on iMac Mid-2009 Stuck - No Recovery Partition PLEASE HELP

I had an old iMac Mid-2009 2GB on OSX Lion, which had been kept away in the garage for a while. Pulled it out, ran Lion fine. It was going to be set up as a new computer, so I downloaded OSX Yosemite, planning to wipe and re-install after installation. Took a lot longer than I expected. After a while, the apple logo progress bar froze. I googled it and many people said just to wait it out, it could take up to 12 hours. 1 week later, still there. Fairly confident that nothing was going on on the hard drive. I reset the PRAM, didn't help. So I tried another fix I found which involved booting into the recovery partition. Guess what, no recovery partition . So finally I went to the trouble of creating an install usb. Booted fine, so I went into Disk Utility to erase my hard drive and re-install. But guess what, I couldn't! Can somebody please help! Or is this iMac stuffed?

Finally figured out the solution. My internal HDD appears to be not working after that faulty Yosemite installation. Just got a fast external HDD, plugged it into the iMac. Booted from the USB, went into Disk Utility and formatted it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in GUID. Installed and got up an running fine. Finally fixed this after 3 weeks! Hopefully this will help anyone that has the same problem.
