Clean re-install of Snow Leopard on Macbook 2,1 - how to do, have Snow Leopard CD.
I have an old (late 2006 or early 2007 I believe) Macbook 2,1 : Core 2 Duo. Too old to upgrade to Lion. Still good. Has been running slowly of late, would like to do a clean re-install of all the software. Did re-install Snow Leopard off CD, but it maintained all the existing software and did not help.

Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window.
Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. You should see your hard drive in the left hand column along with your other drives. Click on the drive and select the Erase tab. Set the format value to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click the Erase button. After that has finished select the Partition tab. Type in a Name for your hard drive and select how many partitions you want from the Volume Scheme. The usual setting is one partition. Click on the Options button after you've selected a partition to make sure it's set for GUID. Then click the Apply button and after the Partitioning is done quit Disk Utility.
You can now follow the instructions on the install screen

Should I do a clean OS install after buying second hand MacBook?
I just bought a second hand MacBook 2010 for my girlfriend. It came with a clean Lion installed. What is making me paranoid is that I use tracking software Prey on my own MBP and now how can I be sure that the new one hasn't got tracking software installed for opposite reason (to steal it and sell again)?
I know it might sound stupid, but I like to be prepared for the worst. So should I format the drive and install Lion again? What would you do?I would never run a used Mac "as is"; there is too much potential for security violations or just software problems. I strongly recommend, unless you completely trust the person from whom you purchased the Mac, that you erase the hard drive and reinstal Mac OS X. That way you start fresh, without any of the cruft that accumulates on any OS, and of course remove any potential for malware such as a keylogger.

After installing a MAC update, Firefox has been uninstalled - how could this have happened?
I installed a recommended update (on MAC OS X 10.7.5), comprising updates for Word, Excel and Microsoft Messenger. When the installation process was completed, Firefox had been de-installed without any notification. Why? Has anyone had the same experience?
So I just got back from vacation and uninstalled firefox. Reinstalled it and I still have the same problem. The odd thing is now it doesn't work in Google Chrome either. So I'm sure it is a Mac problem now. Probably has nothing to do with FireFox and everything to do with being dumb enough to buy a 4000 $ paperweight called mac. What a hunk of junk.

Mac OS X has a built-in disk diagnostic and repair program called fsck or file system consistency check. Here’s how to verify and repair your startup disk with fsck. As soon as you hear the startup tone, press and hold Command-S on the keyboard. Keep holding down those keys until you see a black screen with white lettering. This is called “booting into Single User Mode.” As the Mac boots in this mode, the screen reports each step of the process. The line should end in root#. Right after the root# prompt, enter the following: /sbin/fsck -fy
If repairing the disk in single user mode fails, it means one of two things. Either your hard drive itself is failing (a hardware failure), or the directory damage on your hard drive is beyond the capability of the built-in repair procedures in OS X. -

I have the same trouble, I try installing rEFI but when I try start my Pro from DVD doesn't recognize.
Can I start from USB Memory? with files from SL DVD? or have some thing else?

The certificate on my applications install DVD for bundled software has expired. I am unable to reinstall with this dvd on my snow leopard on macbook pro. Pl help. If I use Lion, it works fine with the expired certificate. But doesnt work with snowleopard.

I have installed mountain lion on my macbook pro ,but it made my mac very slow. Would someone please tell me how to uninstall this one and reinstall snow leopard? I tried to do it by my original CDs but macbook pro didn't let me to do it.

Just installed windows 7 on my macbook (Mac OS X Snow Leopard) using bootcamp. Windows 7 works great, but I can't get back to my Snow Leopard. When I log off or shut down Windows and try to start up again, all I get is Windows. How do I get back to my mac operating system?
If your Mac is off then start up. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the Option key until the Mac and Windows Disks show up. Then click on the Mac disk and the arrow below it. After it boots up in Mac then go to System Preferences>Startup Disk and select your Mac partition as the Startup disk.
If you are in Windows then look for the Boot Camp icon on the taskbar. It will look like a gray box sitting on one corner. One of the options when you click it is to restart in Mac OS. After it boots up in Mac then go to System Preferences>Startup Disk and select your Mac partition as the Startup disk. -

some Early 2011 MacBook Pros originally came with Snow Leopard installed, and some originally came with Lion installed. If yours originally came with Snow Leopard installed, then you should be able to install Snow Leopard from its model-specific grey Mac OS X Install DVD. (The white retail Snow Leopard DVD can’t be used with it; it was made for use with earlier models, which originally came with either Tiger or Leopard installed.) If yours originally came with Lion installed, then it won’t accept any Snow Leopard DVD; instead, you’d be able to use OS X Internet Recovery to download and install its original version of Lion from Apple’s servers. -

At some point, your internal HD was selected for use as Time Machine backups, and a Backups.backupdb folder was created at the top level. So OSX thinks you're trying to install it on the same drive as your backups.
Open your internal HD with the Finder (you won't find it via a Spotlight or Finder search) and delete that folder. -

I bought a macbook pro 2011 2.2 ghz quad core i7 and would like to install snow leopard in one partition to run older software. I had the full version of os leopard, but can't install in the new macbook pro to upgrade to snow leopard. I can't upgrade snow leopard in my power G5 either because it needs intel cpu. Installing Snow Leopard from Macbook Pro on a desktop MacPro?
So in a few days my new Macbook Pro will arrive (old powerbook's screen committed suicide). Snow Leopard and iLife will be installed as well as the discs of these programs. I have a Intel Mac Pro that is still running Tiger along with the old iLife stuff. Can I use the Macbook's software discs to install Snow Leopard and iLife on the MacPro desktop?
This is asked here frequently, maybe once a week, so you might want to search Discussions for more info, but the slightly longer answer than already posted is:
1. The license that comes with the software included with a new Mac prohibits its use with any other Mac.
2. The installer discs that ship with Macs include technical measures to prevent users from violating that license provision.
If you want to run Snow Leopard & the upgraded versions of iLife on the older Mac, you need to buy licensed retail copies of each for that. Snow Leopard is only $29. iLife '09 is $79 from Apple, less from some online retailers like Amazon.com.
