Clean reinstall - need help

Question

I just did a clean reinstall of my G4 eMac (10.3.9) and did all the software updates available. I can't seem to get above iTunes 4 (can't run 8) and am having difficulty transferring my stuff back onto the computer from the external drive. Address Book finally worked with a simple copy/paste. Similar with my iTunes folder...I copied the whole thing as instructed in Ihnakto's book but only the songs trasferred, not my playlists, etc. Also, no podcast or TV shows as they were not on iTunes 4. Can't seem to figure out how to get my iCal back on either. Help anyone? I just cannot afford a new computer yet.

Repair permissions with disk utility too if you haven't already.

What exactly is happening to have you say you "can't get above" it? Are you using Software Update? Does it say what version it is trying to download? itunes 8 won't run under Panther anyway, but I think software updater should be smart enough to only offer you the highest version that will run under your OS.

Some of these programs have items that need to go into very specific places. Actually the best way to reinstall is to use an archive and install which keeps all your old settings and data. I couldn't find a reference for the book you menioned so I have no idea what it told you to do. I know it's a bit late to say this if this is what you did but dragging back and forth is probably the worst way to back up in OSX. You should use a cloning too such as SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. OSX sets permissions on files and the dragging process can unset those and make it difficult for you or the computer to get access to them.
With iTunes you have to copy the whole itunes folder over.
I don't know specifically where ical stores all its information but many personal settings are in the Library folder in your user area (not the one at the main level of the computer but in your user area).
