Clean reinstall, restore from TM without old system folder. How?
My Macbook has been having some issues so, I would like to erase my hard drive and do a clean reinstall of OS 10.5. My files are all backed up to Time Machine via an external La Cie hard drive. What would be the best way of restoring my application and folders without the old system file?
Are you sure the problem is with your installation of OSX? Erasing everything is rarely required on OSX, and rarely accomplishes anything good.
It's usually best to address the problems directly. I'd recommend starting here: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/performance.html
Have you tried downloading and installing the "combo" update. That's the cleverly-named combination of all the updates to Leopard since it was first released, so installing it should fix anything that's gone wrong since then, such as with one of the normal "point" updates. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.
But if you really want to, do an +Archive and Install+ or +Erase and Install+ of Leopard, then use +Setup Assistant+ to transfer everything else from your backups. See #19 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

The system is OSX10.5.8 Leopard on a 2009 imac. A new system was installed from the installation disks and the original system saved to a folder.
I need to use my Adobe programs, rescue my email, i-tunes and iphoto data. The disk utility indicates that my Time Machine back-up disk is damaged and I don't want to take a risk of having Time Machine erase my hard drive and try to reinstall the exact system existing at the time of the crash. There was over 650 gb of stored files that I was copying and removing from the drive at the time it crashed. The total size of the original system file is still about 650 Gb.
I would prefer to go back in Time Machine and only rescue the programs as most of the files have been copied to external hard drives, but I can't access the back-up hard drive from the new version of the Time Machine. Or by I don't want the Time Mchine to start copying the new operating system which would include all the data in the old system file. Time Machine was working fine at the time of the crash. No, the disk was backed up with time machine a few hours prior to the crash. I was unable to open the computer when I tried to restart it- got a grey screen with the spinning disk- after a few minutes the screen would go black and would reboot continuously, but not load any images or programs. I started the computer from the 10.5.4 installation disks and checked both the time machine external hard drive and the Imac internal drive with the disk utilities. Both showed as damaged --the internal drive and permissions were repaired, but the external drive (time machine back-up) was damaged and not repairable by disk utilities. I don't believe that the external drive for Time Machine was connected to the computer at the time of the crash as I was copying files to a different hard drive drive. And I was not having any problems with the TM back-up drive prior to the crash.
I accessed the Imac internal disk by firewire (as a target disk) and copied as many data files as I had room for on my external hard drives available. And I deleted quite a few files from the imac internal drive (mostly just jpegs, duplicate tifs, etc--nothing that was used by i-photos, i-tunes or the Mail program).
Then I installed a new OSX10.5.4 system from the installation disk and the old system was moved to a folder on the hard drive. I previousy had had the option to reinstall the complete system from Time Machine when I connected that drive and booted with the installation disks with the C key depressed. But it didn't seem like a good option because I was unsure of the condition of that external disk and whether it would be able to reinstall my data correctly, once it had erased my internal hard drive.
I'm considering buying some new external hard drives and backing up the present system to time Machine (so I'll still have my old data in the old system folder). And then I would try using the old Time Machine back-up to try to reinstall the sytem previous to the crash. That back-up would reinstall about 700gb of data and operating software and programs which sounds like a lengthy back-up. Since I have never used Time Machine to do a full reinstallation (I've only used it for individual files), I'm reluctant to do anything rash.
I'm a professional designer (with a deadline) but I can still use my Illustrator and Photoshop by opening them from the old system folder and saving the files to an external drive. So it's not neccessary to do anything hasty except to delete some of the excess art and document files that were causing the computer to run slowly and the Adobe programs to crash when I tried to save my work. I have quite a few books on tape in the i-tumes folder which is probably talking up tons of space but I don't where the i-tunes files live.
Thanks for any help. Peggy

Error ORA-01152: file 1 was not restored from a sufficiently old backup
Its also not thread just to share info with oracle gurus here.If my findings for the below workaround is wrong then please do correct me.
Sometime you get the error after performing restoring controlfile when you don't have autobackup controlfile on
error ORA-01152: file 1 was not restored from a sufficiently old backup
why?
Cause When you shutdown the database with using the normal, transactional or immediate options not abort a full checkpoint occurs.A full checkpoint ensures that all of the dirty blocks contained in the buffer cache are written to the data files, the database comes into synchronized state at this time i.e controlfile CKPT SCN=databasefile CKPT.
Like in this demo i am not taking backup the database in opened mode

error ORA-01152: file 1 was not restored from a sufficiently old backup
Reason is that CKPT SCN in the datafiles will be ahead of the backupset control file no
full checkpoint occuring. You are not taking backup in consistent state and the
backupset will not be in consistent state. When you will restore the control file from
backupset then yours restored control file SCN will be lesser then yours datafile

Hello imefromakwaibom
Check to make sure that you have a back up by going to the iTunes Preferences and click on the Devices Tab to see a list of backups. If you have your Side Bar showing you can right click on the iPhone and should have the option to restore from back up.

Is there a way of dragging my software such as Adobe CS and Microsoft from the old system to the new system
It's not just dragging the apps, there are support files, hidden folders, preferences... some apps are tied to a specific machine...
You have to reinstall 98% of the time. -
IPhone gift: Can I restore from backup without her knowing?
Hi
I have bought a new iphone 5S for my wife's Christmas present.
I know her Apple ID and so I know that I can restore from iCloud backup
However.... Can I download the iCloud data to her new phone without her knowing OR without it deleting the content from her old (current) phone?
It would be nice to give her it on Christmas Day all done - without all the set-up fuss that you can get.
Thanks
BPlug her old phone into iTunes and back it up. Plug the new phone into iTunes and restore it from the backup you made.

Just do a full system restore from TM: boot from the install DVD, go to the Utilities menu and choose " system restore from TM". follow the instructions. Your system will be restored to the exact state it was in at the moment of TM backup.

HT4859 Restore from iCloud without updating iOS
How do I restore from an iCloud backup iOS6.1 when I have a brand new iPhone 5 with 6.0.2?
Restoring to an iCloud backup doesn't restore or update the iOS, but you have to be running the same iOS or higer as the device whose backup you are restoring to. Restoring the backup has to be done in the initial setup process. If you have any data on your phone now that is not in the backup that you want to save you'll need to do that first. Then go to Settings>General>Reset and tap Erase All Content and Settings. You will then go through the setup screens as you did when the phone was new. When given the option, choose Restore from iCloud Backup (see image below). Be sure you are connected to wifi and your charger as this will take some time to finish.

Can't restore from Create Archive of Applications Folder
Hello. I never fully recovered from reverting to Panther from Tiger (see re:Major Problems in Feb. 2006). I think that I had some leftover Tiger apps or cache. So, I did another clean install, starting with OS 10.2.3 and then updating to 10.3.9. I think that I avoided all problems, everything is running smoothly, except...
I wanted a backup of my Applications folder so that I could drag my non-Apple apps back into it after the restore. I thought that I would compare the Application folder after the system re-install with my copy of the folder and it would be easy to just drag my apps into the system folder. I used the File/Create Archive menu item on my Application folder, and yes, it took a long time and is huge, but it worked. The problem is that I can't unzip it. The error that I get is "Unable to unarchive "Applications.zip" into /MacFileCurrent". (Error 17 - File exists.)". There are several versions of Turbo-Tax and a few of Metrowerks Codewarrior, but they have different names. I tried connecting my iMac via firewire to a different computer (running Tiger) in case it needed to be on a different drive than my system drive, but that didn't help. Can I unzip the file?
Thanks in advance.
Betsy

iMac - 17" flat screen Mac OS X (10.3.9)
iMac - 17" flat screen Mac OS X (10.3.9)I searched for BOMArchiveHelper - the default application to open zipped files - in the discussion forums and found an entry that said that it is limited in capabilities. The entry suggested using Stuffit, which I downloaded, and it worked. I have my applications back and the ones that I have tested work fine.
This is a great resource.
Thanks,

Win7 OS reinstalled: Can I cpy saved old PS folder to new Prog Files
I had to reinstall my Win 7 OS. w/Microsoft's help, the old system files were saved to windows.old, so I have the old PS 64 bit installation there. My question is, to save time, can I just move the old PS folder to Program Files in the new OS install, and reinstall Photoshop over it to "reintroduce" it to Windows? If so, do I also have to move files from other system folders? I was able to do that with Eudora, and when I moved my wonderfully quick & simple FTP upload program WS FTP into the reinstall, all I did was drop the old folder into place, and that was it!
Thanks!
Ron HildebrandOne other thing... I don't know whether Windows 7 will do it, but Windows 8 automatically deletes a lot of stuff from under Windows.old after a few days. You might want to back that stuff up to another drive or at least rename it from Windows.old to something else if you'd like to keep it around for a while. I think it's ridiculous that Microsoft would think to delete those files at all, but I've seen it happen. In my case luckily I DID back up everything to an external USB drive.

I had a problem with Blackberry Desktop Manager and had to reinstall my System in September. I have the "Previous Systems Folder" and would like to get rid of it. This was done 10/2/09. None of the dates in the folder are after 10/02. Does this mean nothing is being used and it's safe to trash? If so my memory tells me I will have difficulty trashing some things because it's system related.
ThanksThanks. Everything is working fine. So you're essentially saying the old system file is not being used? I want to make sure I'm not loosing anything. As far as trashing the old system do you think I'll have to do anything special to get rid of it? My memory says years ago it didn't want to let me trash it.

Restore from Backup without saving
How do I stop iTunes from saving an additional backup when I am restoring to backup on a new iPhone. It takes up alot of space and I do not have enough, hence the process stops after some time.
Relatively, the iPhone's backup does not take up that much space. If your computer's hard drive does not have enough free storage space for the iPhone's backup, you need to free up some space in a hurry or you risk data loss with other data on your computer and computer performance problems.
iTunes creates and maintains a separate backup for each iDevice which cannot be changed or prevented. When connecting a new iPhone to iTunes the first time, there is nothing on the new iPhone to be backed up. You are prompted to transfer the backup for an existing iPhone which must be followed by a sync and a new backup for the new iPhone is created. After the new backup is created for the new iPhone, you can delete the backup for the old iPhone. If you continue to sync the old iPhone with iTunes, a new backup for the old iPhone will be created by iTunes which will be updated as the first step during the iTunes sync process.
If your computer's hard drive does not have enough storage space for this, you need to focus your efforts elsewhere such as removing as much data from the existing hard drive as possible such as removing 3rd party apps that are rarely if ever used, transferring your iTunes library to an external hard drive and the same for all photos stored on your computer's hard drive, or invest in hard drive upgrade for your computer to a much larger hard drive.
If your computer's hard drive has less than 10% free, the iPhone's backup is the least of your concerns. -
How to stop iTunes from looking in old media folder location?
Several years ago, I moved my iTunes media onto an external drive attached to my Airport Extreme, because I was running out of room on the internal drive.
I had all the usual problems with iTunes looking on the internal drive, but it mostly worked okay, as long as I didn't mind only being able to access my music at home.
A few months ago, I got a 2TB internal drive, and told iTunes to use the default media folder location on the internal drive again. I also check to keep iTunes media folder organized, and to copy files to the iTunes media folder when adding them to the library. I had already manually copied the folder structure over from the external drive.
I noticed that when I would start iTunes, I would see the activity light on the external drive, and it would be mounted on my Desktop. I checked, and the location for the media folder was still correct in preferences. I checked a file or two and (this seems to be gone in iTunes 12.1) it was still showing the file location on the other drive.
I tried to manually "cut the cord" by renaming the folder on the external drive, but iTunes was cleverer than that.
What do I need to do to stop iTunes from looking for files in the old location? I'd like to reclaim that space, but I'm afraid to remove anything over there, in case iTunes has been putting things over there instead of the new, correct location.
This is a MacBook Pro 8,2 i7, with 10.10.3 and iTunes 12.1.x.
Thanks,
SeanManually moving files yourself and telling iTunes where to store media in preferences does not do what oh so many people who come here with issues think it does. Changing iTunes' media storage preferences only tells iTunes where to store new media. iTunes still looks for old media where it last saw it, namely on your external drive. You have to let iTunes do the relocating of the old media files by consolidating to the internal drive. It will cheerfully ignore any changes you do in Finder yourself.
