Clean Reinstall without App Store download?

I need to do a clean reinstall. (I have a problem with Final Cut Pro X that is resolved when I create a new user and work from there).
I don't have a Recovery HD on my system (I thought it was automatically created when you install the OS). To further complicate matters, every time I try to download Mountain Lion from the App Store, it hangs at 425 MB (downloaded).
I've repaired permissions, deleted cache files, checked the App Store for unfinished downloads etc etc but every time the download starts, it gets to 425 MB and then locks up with the message:
"OS X Lion failed to download - Use the Purchases page to try again."
(This is not a helpful message - especially when you've "tried again" a dozen times.
I've also deleted any file or part-file that's been created in the Apps folder.
I'm totally at a loss to know how I can create a Recovery HD if Mountain Lion won't download from the App Store.
I tried downloading Mountain Lion onto my partner Gill's iMac (she's was a little apprehensive about it). I was hoping to create a Recovery HD on a 16GB CF card.
If THAT worked I would probably have been in business because I could have used it on my Mac Pro.
The download onto Gill's iMac failed at 124 MB (Downloaded).
I suspected our broadband connection, but I just watched one of our videos on it, and it played perfectly - in fact the buffer indicator showed that the 4 min 44 sec video was fully downloaded by the time it had been playing for 35 seconds.
I guess the fault must be with the App Store - although I downloaded FCP X from there last night.
Assuming I eventually resolve this, it's a clean reinstall for me - and my first job after installing the system on any new Mac in the future will be to make certain I have a Recovery HD.
I hope someone can shed some light on this.
Andy

Thanks for your help, Barney,
I agree. If you vacuum your living room carpet, you don't empty the contents of the container back onto the floor so I don't refer to "clean install" if I intend to drag all the garbage back onto my system drive. If I do a "clean install" that's what it is - a very long tiresome process.
I'm beginning to think the new user option is my only one. I've tried repeatedly (including using your suggestions above) and failed every time to get Mountain Lion to download.
I doubt it would consistently fail at 425 MB if the wifi were causing the problem, but all the same, I connected via ethernet cable - to no avail. I even tried pausing the download at 400 MB, then switching off and disconnecting the router for five minutes - but that had no effect either.
And I tried downloading at 5 am this morning, just in case it was heavy local usage that affected it, but again, it wouldn't be consistent.
I just paused it again, and will restart the Mac before resuming, but I don't hold out much hope.
If anyone has any ideas on this, I'd be most grateful.

  • App store download location?

I'm in the process of cleaning up my home iMac and backing up digital files to external drives.
I've brought quite a bit from the itunes store and all these files are kept in the Music>iTunes folder, which I can back which will save me re-downloading it again. As for the App-Store downloads, - where is this download folder located?? I dont want to redownload these big files again!
    Thanks in advance!
    Chris.

I wanted this information because I had a problem upgrading iPhoto to 9.4.3 and not even the Genious Bar™ was able to make it update. It was suggested I may need to reinstall Mac OS entirely. If I was going to have to do that, which would take days as I use a lot of large proprietary software implementations such as Adobe Creative Suite which would also have to be deactivated, reinstalled and reactivated, I decided to try to fix it myself. So I checked my Time Machine backup, turned off Time Machine and had a poke around on my disk. I know that Apple prefers we don't look at our filesystems this way, however, it has been maintained in many court decisions that the contents of our hard drives are ours to do with as we please. USE THIS INFORMATION AT YOUR OWN RISK.IT'S MORE LIKELY THAT THIS INFORMATION WILL HELP YOU HELP A TECHNICIAN SOLVE THE PROBLEM THAN FIXING IT YOURSELF WITHOUT A KNOWLEDGE OF BSD AND UNIX.
I know it's been a while, however, there is better information available about App Store download locations, this information should be handled very carefully as you'll be viewing areas of your filesystem that are not considered ‘end-user friendly’.
For instance, I had a problem with my Internet connection and received a corrupted PKG for my iPhoto 9.4.3 update. The update refused to install even after I uninstalled iPhoto and asked it to reinstall.
I viewed my Console when attempting to upgrade iPhoto and saw that it was attempting to access a PKG file called:
    mzpsxxxx03867858650xxxx.pkg
from a Console system message entry that looked like:
    26/06/13 12:34:39.041 PM App Store[4183]: PKDistributionController: Found asset mzpsxxxx03867858650xxxx.pkg on disk for item 4xxxxxx1 - Size 2xxxxxx2
Upon searching my filesystem with a command in terminal, I discovered that the corrupted PKG file was located at:
    /private/var/folders/6x/g122yp5sxxxxxxv149g440000gp/C/com.apple.appstore/40898xx xx/
This location is likely to be referenced by an internal OS database, and I basically just had to hope that removing the file would allow the database to clear the entry and force the PKG file to download again.
I deleted the file and restarted, asked iPhoto to install in the App Store, and everything went smoothly. After 20 or so other attempts, following Apple's support info, and asking colleagues, this was the ONLY solution to the problem without completely reinstalling Mac OS.
It's interesting that we don't find much information about these storage locations or information about solving App Store problems when PKG files get corrupted during transfer or installation, it's likely that Apple scrubs this information from the Apple Support Communities and I'll be curious to see how long this post lasts on the site.

  • Are App Store Downloads Disk Images?

Pardon the ignorance but I have never used the App Store.
I assumed that the apps you downloaded would be in the form of disk images (.dmg) but something I read recently suggested that this wasn't the case and the apps were simply downloaded and automatically installed on your computer rather like Software Updates in Leopard and SL.
If this is the case, it appears that if your computer is erased or replaced, the app will need downloading again, which I assume will be easy (and free!) as the App Store should have the record of the original sale.
    Is that correct?
However, you are usually allowed to have one copy on a desktop and another on a laptop. How does one go about that?
If the app is a simple self-contained one it should be easy enough to drag and drop it to the second computer, but that won't work with more complex apps that use various "hidden" files or folders.
I have always made backup hard copies (DVDs) of all my apps for obvious security reasons and it appears that this will no longer be possible . . . . or will it?
Software Updates can be copied by whipping them out of the Updates folder before they have a chance to be intalled (and the installer deleted).
    Can a similar technique be used with App Store downloads . . . . . . . . or is that something I shouldn't be asking?

    Hi,
If you need to re download an app follow the instructions here.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
You can download the same app to multiple Macs without extra charge.
Updates for apps you download from the MAS will be available in the top of the MAS window, not from Software Update. Reason being, they are from third party developers, not Apple.
Always a good idea to backup any apps you install from the MAS to an external source for easy reinstall in case you need to reformat the drive they are stored on.

  • I am unable to use Iboost app, when i try to use it, I get an error "iBoost App is damaged" and reinstall from app store. I get the same error even after installing a fresh copy. Need help to resovle this issue.

“iBoostUp.app” is damaged and can’t be opened. Delete “iBoostUp.app” and download it again from the App Store.
Because of the above error, i am not able to use iboostup application. I have even tried to reinstall from app store, but the issue still continues.
    Need help.

    Perhaps the damaged file is an auxiliary file outside the app bundle and stored elsewhere on your Mac. Try deleting the app and all it files with an app for that purpose. Afree one is AppCleaner;

  • How does one save App Store downloads to a flash drive?

I live in South Africa, where Internet access is expensive/slow compared to the rest of the world.
For this reason, I would like to backup my App Store downloads so I can do a clean install every few years.
I've downloaded GarageBand which has been saved in my applications folder.
I have not run the installer yet.
In applications, the file GarageBand.app has been created.
If I right click on the file, I can copy it, but right clicking again doesn't give me a paste option.
Any idea how to save this file to a flash drive?
    I'm running Mavericks

There is no digital rights management scheme used in the Mac App Store aside from the fact that all apps/games are coded with the user's Apple ID and the Mac on which one wishes to use an app/game must be authorized to use that Apple ID's content.
The only difference in this case is that my thumb drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) because it is my bootable USB installer for Mavericks. But as you can see it works fine.

  • Where does iCloud app store downloaded attachments on iOS device?

I am wondering where iCloud app store downloaded attachments? I downloaded a rather large PDF for viewing and would like to get rid of it. Thank you.

Got it. So the Lion installer will be in my apps folder? the reason I'm asking is because I want to be able to create a bootable DVD so I can do a clean install. I have the instructs per OSX Daily. The instructs were from Apple devs on how to make a bootable DVD as they were doing with the pre-GM's. Thanks!

  • I can't reinstall the app store application

I've deleted (foolishly) the app store as it wasn't working properly - it's was completely removed, not just removed from the dock. Now i'm having a lot of difficulty reinstalling the app store application. I need help please!
After some googling, the suggested method was to download the 10.6.6 combo update package and use pacifist to install the app store component. However this didn't work, the app store won't open after this process. I then tried installing the app store component using pacifist from the 10.10.2 combo update to bring the app store up to date, but still it won't open.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I've got a 'problem report' if that would help.

  • When I go to update my software using the app store download, it always asks for the previous user's ID, not mine.  Please help!

When I go to update my software using the app store download, it always asks for the previous user's ID, not mine (my IT guy at school's-I am a faculty with admin priviledges).  I have signed in as me, have set the main preferences login user as me,and everywhere on the laptop I can use my apple ID except here.  It always shows me a greyed out ID of my IT.  How can I reset this to my ID? It doesn't give me an option to change the user ID, only a link to reset password.  I reset it, but it did not change the problem.  Can someone help me?

It's not an ID problem, it's an ownership problem.
When someone uses their personal Apple ID to buy and download content, the content is licensed to them and has their Apple ID engrained in it's DNA. It is an anti-piracy program. And when that personal Apple ID is used to setup a new Mac, it involves the Mac itself, the shipping OS and any pre-installed apps as well.
It's not the correct way to handle Macs that belong to a business or an institution. And had it been handled correctly they would not now be in this predictument needing a drastic remedy.

    Try this.
    IOS Restore Steps
    Before restoring:
Verify that you are using the latest version of iTunes.
    Back up your device.
Transfer and sync content to your computer.
    Restoring your iOS device
Connect your device to your computer.
Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes. Select the Summary tab, and click the Restore button.
    Click Restore.
After a restore, the iOS device restarts. You should then see "Slide to set up". Follow the steps in the iOS Setup Assistant.

  • How do you reinstall the app store on a mac computer?

I accidentally deleted the app store on my macbook pro. How do you reinstall the app store app on your computer?

There is no Mac App Store on Mac OS X 10.6.5 or earlier.
On Mac OS X 10.6.6 through 10.6.8, run the combo updater for your OS version or a newer Snow Leopard one.
On Mac OS X 10.7 or newer, restart with the Command and R keys held down, and reinstall the OS.
