Your welcome!
Great catch there, I should have advised you to Restore Default and Restart... Sometimes my iMac runs for a week or more without a restart and my feeble old mind forgets that a restart will also fix many issues.
If you can find a way to move that solved star to Lyssa's reply or thank her please do, she thought of it.

  • I closed all my toolbars for a clean screenshot, and now I can't get them back. What do I do?

the background to the toolbars had options to turn all 3 off, and since I wanted to maximize the size of my screenshot, I turned all 3 off: drop-down menus, the webaddress, and bookmarks.

Firefox 3.6+ versions have a feature to allow the user to hide the Menu bar.
Hit the '''Alt''' key to temporarily show the Menu bar, then open View > Toolbars and select Menu bar, so it has a check-mark. <br />
The F10 can also be used on most PC's to temporarily reveal the Menu bar.

  • Cover Flow: Can I Change Video Clips' First Frame?

    Hi,
I've got a bunch of video files that I'm viewing in cover flow. However, seeing their first frames doesn't help much in giving me a clue about their contents.
Is it possible to select an middle frame in the video clip and have that be the image that pops up in cover flow? How?
    Thanks,
    Duck

Whenever I get a movie I always play it in QT Pro 7, select a typical frame, copy it and then paste it as the icon for the movie using GetInfo. Cover Flow respects these added icons, and that is what it displays.
If you only have QT X the process is a bit more problematic, since I have not discovered a way to select and copy an individual frame. You can't even do a decent screen shot, since if you pause the movie to take a picture of the movie, the idiotic control bar is inside the movie frame. However, if you pause it, then move the mouse off the control bar and click once inside the frame, the control bar will disappear and you can then do a clean screenshot. Open the screenshot in Preview, select all and copy, then select the movie file in Finder, GetInfo, select the wee little icon at the top and paste. Your movie will now have your custom icon displayed in Cover Flow, Icon view, and so on.

  • Would running voice over cause this problem?

    Hi
I have a ? for anyone who might know the answer. I recently noticed that pressing shift + s does not make the s uppercase. I can only uppercase the s by pressing the caps lock key. Would VO cause this? I have tried it with both shift keys and it only has this problem with the letter s. Come to think of it, it happens when universal access is not running as well. Any ideas as to the cause of this? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Funny how things work. While reading another thread, I found someone with a link on to make selected text talk through system preferences> speech> text to speech. Within those options I found that the key that was set to read any text that is highlighted was shift + s. Thanks for that, here is the article if anyone is interested.
    Make Your Mac Speak
Did you know that your Mac can read aloud to you? Mac OS X Leopard includes a cool Text to Speech function that makes the Mac speak selected text in text-based files — including web pages, email messages, spreadsheets, calendar entries, PDFs, text documents, Finder windows, and even iTunes.
To start, open the System Preferences panel under the Apple icon and click on Speech. Select the Text to Speech tab, check the option “Speak selected text when the key is pressed,” and click the Set Key option. Choose one modifier key — Command, Control, Option, or Shift — plus one other key of your choice, then click OK. Now each time you type this key combination, your Mac will read aloud any text you have selected. To stop the speech, type the same key combination again.
You can even choose your Mac’s voice. Mac OS X includes 24 human-sounding and novelty voices, from the suave Alex to the robotic Zarvox. (To see the complete list, click the “Show More Voices” option at the bottom of the pull-down System Voice menu.) You can also ask your Mac to speak more slowly or quickly by adjusting the Speaking Rate slider. Whichever you choose, listening to your text can be a surprisingly useful tool for editing and proofreading.
In addition to speaking selected text aloud, you can configure Text to Speech to announce when an application needs attention or to summon you if you ignore an onscreen alert. This function includes an adjustable delay between the text alert and the spoken announcement, which gives you a chance to tend to the alert before being verbally prompted. You can also have your Mac announce the time on the hour, half-hour, or quarter-hour. To set this up, choose the Clock tab under Date & Time in System Preferences and check Announce the Time.
Note that Text to Speech differs from VoiceOver, which provides more comprehensive control of speech and enables the blind or those with low vision to use a Mac. Also, some applications that come with Mac OS X Leopard — including Mail, Calculator, and Chess — and some other Mac programs, such as FileMaker Pro, are “self-speaking” and provide speech capabilities that you can configure independently of the Text to Speech System Preference.

  • Mid-2010 MBP beachballing, so slow, pretty clean - any advice?

Hello!  So, I have a similar to what other people have reported about slow system performance.  EtreCheck below for my MBP, so I created a new thread.
I have a mid-2010 Macbook Pro.  History:  Was okay but not blazingly fast out of the box.  Used it for a while, seemed to slow down over time.  Upgraded to Mavericks when it came out - didn't help and eventually got even slower.  Wiped the drive clean, reinstalled the OS and put my applications back on, seemed to be okay, but got slower pretty quickly to the point that it was so frustrating that I didn't want to use it. Now I just upgraded to Yosemite and it's worse - can't stand to use the MBP anymore.  Beachballs or delays on menu clicks or switching between apps; slow boot up & shut down; frozen browsers; couldn't even Force Kill chrome yesterday.  Also, battery only lasts like 2.5-3 hours...I watch it tick down just sitting here on Chrome not doing anything. (It's been that way almost from the beginning, from what I recall.)
Have and use essentially only Chrome, Safari, and MS Mac Office 2008 (Excel & Powerpoint).  Couldn't use Parallels due to slowness, so gave up a while ago before Mavericks!! Genius at the Apple Bar ran diagnostic checks, says everything is fine with hardware, battery and disk.  I can't figure out how a pretty clean system can be so slow.  Makes me want to revert to PC!  I ran a EtreCheck, here it is. If anyone has any thoughts, I'm interested to hear.  THANK YOU!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

  • How can I do a clean install of Mavericks?

So I just traded my iMac for a macbook pro from someone on craigslist. Everytime I buy a computer off someone on craigslist I like to do a clean install and do a secure erase of the hard drive. Well normally I do this by taking a USB drive and making a installer on it for Mavericks and erasing the whole drive and making a new partition. Well I did this and after booting up and setting the mac up I noticed that some apps crashed a lot (Safari, iTunes, Mac app store) esspecially Safari when I try to clear the caches. Could something have gone wrong on the USB installer and do I need to redownload and recreate the USB installer and reinstall OS X again? Thanks in advance for the help!

    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports (not "Diagnostic and Usage Messages") for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. I know the report is long. Please post all of it anyway.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report — they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Why does Flashplayer for Firefox create 1000's of FAP####.tmp files and never cleans then up?

    Version Info
FlashPlayer Plugin version: 11.9.900.117 (and many version before)
Firefox version                   : 24.0 (and many versions before)
    Windows Version               : Windows 7-SP1
    Directory of Files               :  C:\Windows\Temp
    Details
I noticed this started all of a sudden over the last year or so, when my virus scans started taking longer and longer and more and more files were being scanned even though no windows updates were done to the computer and regular windows cleanups (Administrative tools->Free Up disk space app) were performed. Before that it was fine.
It doesn't happen right away. It happens after many web browsing sessions (may take several hours to reproduce) of opening and closing the Firefox web browser and browsing a lot of Flash based websites. Once it starts every single website that contains a flash player object cause the files to occur (In other words, it's fine for a while and then all of a sudden it starts, even if you restart Firefox).
There is 1 file for every flashplayer object on the page (example: 2 flashplayer items cause 2 FAP####.tmp files to be generated). The only way to stop this (temporarily) is to reboot the computer (I only reboot about once a week and use hibernate during the week).
I had over 3500 of the randomly numbered files in the windows temp dir and the windows cleanup doesn't recognize these files as candidates to remove (I guess because they are application specific files). So I have to keep a Windows Explorer session open in Win Temp dir to periodically remove the files.
I did google this and found this has been going on here and there for a few years. There were various discussions about uninstalling/reinstalling Firefox and the flashplayer and then people claim it didn't work and started again after some period of time.
I also found a website that said this was caused by some protected mode the flash player is running now. They gave instructions on how to turn off the protected mode, but I've been hesitant to do this, due to some of the protections that were described and was afraid I'd be leaving myself open to viruses or other attack.
Why is the flashplayer generating these files?
Why isn't flashplayer cleaning up after iteself and forcing me to clean up thousands of files manually?
why doesn't Adobe manage this properly once and for all, considering how long it's been going on?
I would appreciate any thoughts on this issue.
    Thanks.

Can you post back here a screenshot from this issue?

  • CS5.5 Web Premium   OS 10.10 = Inconsistency in the installer database. Is there something to resolve this?  Cleaner did not work-BC, not installed.

I have CS5.5 Web Premium for Mac.  I have been using it on my old PowerBook on Yosemite for several months. I just purchased a new PowerBook with Yosemite and cannot get the software to install.  I purchased an external drive, LG Portable DVD Writer.  I first thought that this was the failure point, but, since then, I was about to install MS Office.  Many times the CD spins insanely without allowing me to install.  However three times now, I've made it to the point just passed entering the ID, which was successful (I have a screenshot).  I get to a point of the Installation Status that reports:  Your installation encountered errors.  Please try restarting your system and installing again.  Inconsistency in the installer database. Please restart your computer and install again.  After determining that would not resolve the problem, I began doing a little research and found that there was an Exit 15 error in the error log.  I then  downloaded the CS Cleaner Tool.  The application returned this message:  The following installations were found on your system.  The dialog box was empty.  I then decided to try to download the application this morning while I was on a dog walk.  It appears that the file downloaded and I was able to initiate the installation. However, shortly after that, I can an error message stating that it has timed out.  I tried again to install it from the finder, but, it does nothing.  I am out of ideas!  Please send me the magic answer!  Thanks!  Mary

    Hello kglad,
Thanks for taking the time to reply.  I did that today, and got the exact same error message.
This is what I've tried now..
Copying installation files to desktop and installing.
    Downloading installation files to desktop.
Any other ideas?  It seems as though there is some kind of "conflict" where old files need to be removed.  However, my earlier assessment found that those files do not exist, since nothing is actually installed yet.

  • Best practices for cleaning up and upgrading

Apologies in advance, as I know there is a wealth of info and ideas on this topic, but I'm looking for the best possible combination of simplicity and effectiveness and the community has done well by me in the past.
Situation:  I have this old MacBook
    Model Name: MacBook
      Model Identifier: MacBook6,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed: 2.26 GHz
      Number of Processors: 1
      Total Number of Cores: 2
      L2 Cache: 3 MB
      Memory: 4 GB
      Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
      Boot ROM Version: MB61.00C8.B00
      System Version: OS X 10.9.5 (13F34)
      Kernel Version: Darwin 13.4.0
    HD- Available: 6.22 GB
      Capacity: 249.2 GB
Literally the only paid software that I have on here and need to keep is Microsoft Office.  I do not have the original install disk for this software.
This machine is running very very slowly, and not much hard disk space left.  I'm not doing very well at cleaning up.
I have brand new Time Machine backup and I have some pretty old Time Machine backups, pre Mavericks.
    I have a new 2TB external drive.
I'm looking for the most effective way to speed this one up and make it as lean as possible and, if advisable, upgrade to Yosemite.
    Any recommendations?
I'm willing to spend a little money if it can make a substantial difference.
Thanks and apologies for length of post.
    RW

    Hi,
First thanks for this.  This application has been really helpful.  I've deleted a lot of the easy stuff (music, pics, videos) and am now getting down to some of the stuff I'm less comfortable whacking without some guidance.  Here's an example.  I don't use the Mail application at all (use Gmail).  Here is what I see on OmniDisk Sweeper:
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/6iedkj46u4jaxbf/Screenshot%202014-11-08%2010.26.33.png ?dl=0
I think the bulk of this is just messages from my gmail account, from a failed attempt to use Mail a bit years ago.  So can you help with at which point I can delete?  Hope question make sense.  You've helped a lot so far and I've freed up about 45 gb so far.

  • Can't upgrade or clean install new Blackberry Link in Win 8 32 bit system

    Hi Helpers,
I cant install the New BB Link version on my system - (the previous version ran perfectly).
Whether I try to update or clean install (old version now uninstalled). I get a pane saying that Microsoft visual C ++ 2008 Sp1 redistributable - W8  needs to be installed first.
The process starts that install - but alwayys fails.  After that the BB Link install just closes.
I can't seem to attach any screenshots (be helpful to be able to 'navigate' to them rather than type in a path).  But I havepasted below the full txt contained in the 'windows installer' pane that appears when the install fails.
Can anyone suggest any way to correct this problem please?  Btw, the new BB Link installs perfectly onto Windows 7.
Thanks in anticipation.  (On trying to post, I was informed that some invalid HTML has been removed - presumably that was in the 'paste' but I've no idea what it was or whether it affects anything, sorry).

  • Instructions to clean install Yosemite to a fusion drive

Hi everyone this is Chris. I have recently purchased a new i mac 27 inch with a 1tb fusion drive. When i tried clean installing yosemite to the fusion drive i noticed that only the 1tb mechanical hard drive appeared. The 128gb ssd portion was missing and yes i checked in diskutil list but it is non existent. Also i noticed that logical volume partition was missing in disk utility so it looks like the yosemite install didnt also set up the ssd as i thought it would. I am attaching a screen shot of disk utility and diskutil list for reference. Could some one please help me with step by step instructions from booting the usb installer till the final installation. I am a new mac user and as such have little experience with the way the os and systems work. The reason i tried to clean install is because i like having control over everything running on my computer and i like to keep a clean system from the beginning. I am willing to learn just how mac osx functions so please help me learn how all these various software works on the i mac so i can use it as much as i did my old windows pc. Any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

I concur with Kappy, you do not have a Fusion Drive in that Mac.
You said; "The reason i tried to clean install is because i like having control over everything running on my computer and i like to keep a clean system from the beginning."
Personally I disagree with your reasoning for a so called "clean" install. Unlike Windows, if you install OS X just doing an upgrade, it does not have to same habit as the Windows installer which can load a PC with tons of crap.
My suggestion is to find out why your 128 GB SSD is not appearing rather then worrying about any "clean" installs.

Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|Previous Sh' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

  • How do I clean my ram on my Macbook Pro? It is getting slow.

Just simply need to know how to clean the ram.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
Take these steps when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. What approximate values are shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec?
    Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
DO NOT INDISCRIMINATELY DUMP THOUSANDS OF LINES FROM THE LOG INTO A MESSAGE. If you do that, I will not respond.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.

  • Illustrator CS4 - Clean up procedure

    Hi
I've googled and yahooed around but can't really find answers to the following...
I've made a character logo in illy cs4 and now i want to finish it off and archive it.
on close inspection there are multiple layers/sub-layers of small vector pieces where i used pathfinder. many don't even have a colour assigned to them. I need to export this for print but im sure there will be problems at the RIP stage.
can i ask you illy pros a few questions?
    1. what is the best method of cleaning up a file without having to zoom into the max and deleteing TONS of little vector shapes/stray points/empty layers? (i've ran object > path > clean up. but saw TONS of extra shapes, etc...but illy didn't notice up to 70% of them)...is there a way to specify a size for the clean up tool? or some other clean up procedure (as these were leftover pathfinder shavings)
    2. whats the best/fastest way to flatten/outline the character? (his made of shapes but mainly strokes)...as i know strokes are not a good thing for RIPing at print time.
    3. this character is being used on different packaging, etc of varying sizes. should i export the small images of him as a flattened transparent tiff? as the small sizes are going as low as 1.5 to 2 inches on final print. (or is this not a problem as long as the character is coverted to outlines...ie: no strokes)
    4. is there a quick way to remove multiple empty layers?
    5. I have some transparent shapes overlapping others. how do i 'flatten' these so that the colour remains the same?
    6. lastly, how should transparent gradients be treated for printing? (can you tell me which is better; object > expand > "expand gradient to.." mesh OR objects? and why?
    thanks for your help

    Peter,
You need to show a screenshot of the
whole graphic so others have a clue as to the magnitude of what you are dealing with here. With that still missing, these would be my comments:
    > 1. what is the best method of cleaning up a file...whats the best/fastest way...is there a quick way....
Don't take offense at this gentle admonition, but: What do you want, the
    best way, or the
easy and quick way? They are often at odds.
Here's why I make that comment: You said, "this character is being used on different packaging, etc of varying sizes." So this is an identity or product graphic to be uses rather extensively. That means it should be constructed as cleanly as possible. How did you end up with "TONS" of extra shapes, etc.?
A proper final graphic for widespread and versatile use as an identity mark in a marketing campaign should be cleanly constructed. It's one thing to use all the clever but sloppy instant tricks (Pathfinders, autotracing, outlining, offsetting, transparency, 3D Effect...) in a program like AI while developing the conceptual drafts in a project. It's quite another to then properly render the tidy final product.
If I had drawn a "character" (I'm assuming by this you mean a character in the sense of a cartoon or mascot, not a text glyph) that ended up with "TONS" of unwanted artifacts and that is going to be used as a repeating identity graphic, I would redraw it as cleanly as possible with efficient paths. When you use repeated path operations and expansions of automatic effects to get something to look the way you want for approval, you most likely end up with even the
essential paths of the artwork containing much more complexity than necessary and desirable, too.
For example: Suppose I used 3D Effect to quickly render something
Now, assuming you are going to foo-foo the above advice, and just want to eliminate the deadwood from your existing artwork as-is, a method I often find more practical than trying to work out a bunch of clever "select same" schemes is as follows:
    1. Zoom out just until you have room on your screen for two complete copies of the artwork, not overlapping, with the original artwork at the left edge of the screen.
    2. Select all of the artwork involved. Note its width in the Transform Palette.
    3. Select one "keeper" object in the artwork.
    4. DoubleClick the black pointer. In the Move dialog, enter a rightward movement distance a little more than the noted width of the artwork. Click OK. The object moves.
    5. Select another "keeper" object in the original artwork. Type Ctrl-D (Transform Again). Repeat the click/Ctrl-D on additional objects in the original until the artwork is assembled at the right, and nothing but unwanted junk remains at the left.
    6. Marquee select around the moved artwork. Select>Inverse. Delete.
    > what's the best/fastest way to flatten/outline the character?
    The
best way would be to carefully redraw it with carefully, accurately drawn paths and intelligently placed anchorpoints. The
fastest way might be to select the whole thing, run OutlineStokes on it, followed by the Merge Pathfinder. Doing that may clean up most, if not all, of your unwanted deadwood, too. But again, I most likely would not use that as the final for a proper commercial-quality identity graphic final.
    > is there a quick way to remove multiple empty layers?
    1. Select All.
    2. Layer Palette: CtrlClick each Layer that has an object selection marker (the little colored square).
    3. Layer Palette flyout menu: Collect in New Layer.
    4. Select all the Layers, deselect the new one, drag the selected ones to the trash.
    > I have some transparent shapes overlapping others. how do i 'flatten' these so that the colour remains the same?
Depending on the kind of objects resulting in translucent shapes, I would redraw them as opaque objects that
    look transparent.
    > lastly, how should transparent gradients be treated for printing? (can you tell me which is better; object > expand > "expand gradient to.." mesh OR objects? and why?
If the final look of the areas overlaid with translucent gradients can't be rendered with simple gradients, rasterization of the whole artwork might be in order, or of just the object with the translucent effect, with the resulting raster contained in a clipping path. But I would avoid rasterization if at all possible, even at the expense of altering the design, given that the artwork is to be handed off for use by others in a resolution-independent fashion.
