Clean spyware or something similar from Airport router?

My internet connection has been a little slower so I bought StreamWatcher. It showed me that every time I viewed my default home page I get these connections to virtualguidedtours.com. Never heard of it.
The host of the default safari website said this, "I just tested the site by browsing to it using a proxy server. My proxy logs only showed traffic going directly to that site. This is almost definitely caused by spyware on your computer. I would recommend finding some antivirus/spyware software and running a system scan to eliminate anything that might be causing this."
I sent them this activity log from StreamWatcher:
2006-01-10 15:14:55 -0500 (1136924095): new TCP stream: source: this-computer.local:61281 - destination: 216.198.238.56:http

216.198.238.56 is the IP of my Safari default page. 224.0.0.251 is for resolving IP addresses. The virtualguidedtours.com references are suspect.
So I downloaded MacScan and there was no spyware or anything on the computer. Same for virus scans.
Is there a way to check the router for this kind of thing?

Spyware and Viruses are not a problem on this platform!

All of the lines originate from "this-computer.local" and the router only passes traffic, not create it like spyware. Maybe browser cookies need to be flushed?

I have a Cisco/Linksys WRT-54G wireless router and 2 Airport Extremes (the small ones that plug directly into the wall). Is it possible to extend the network from the router using these two AEs? I have a DVD player and Ext HD plugged into the router too. Any ideas? I'm guessing the only way is to do what I've seen in these community pages which states that it can be done but it will drop the bandwidth by 50%. Thoughts?? Thanks!

The Cisco/Linksys WRT-54G was one of the very few routers said to be compatible with Apple's implementation of WDS (Wireless Distribution System) settings.
The info that I have on file indicates that only the WRT-54G versions 4 and under were compatible, so that would be one bridge to cross.
Even if you find that your Cisco/Linksys might be the right version, Apple never published instructions on how to configure the Express devices with other manufactures, so users were left to their own devices to try to figure out how to get things working. Apple's instructions to connect to other Apple devices are in the link below:
    WDS network
If you were hoping to use 2 Express devices in this type of configuration...even if it works...the bandwidth penalties will be extremely severe.
The first Express drops the bandwidth (and speed) on the entire network in half and the second halves everything again. So, the result, in effect would be a "g" wireless network running at 25% speed. Few users would consider installing this type of network.
At this point, it becomes one of those things where the fact that you might be able to do something does not mean that there would be much value in doing so. But, it is your decision to decide if you want to try to proceed.

  • If I purchase a second Airport, will it strengthen the signal from the router in one part of the house , so that the printer, in a basement can see it?

I have a router in my upstairs, main floor of the house.   My iMac connects easily to the router, but the printer does not.  If I purchase a second Airport, will it strengthen the signal from the router so the printer will connect wirelessly to the network?
I had the printer connected to the iMac by USB , but when I upgraded the iMac to Maverick OS10  my scanner no longer worked, the more I fussed with it the less productive it was.   Now the printer no longer is available at all.   The computer does not see it.
The message when I turn them on is that the USB is not compatible.    I unplugged the USB cable,  and would like to connect wirelessly.
    Thank you for any hints

If you have an Apple router now providing your wireless network, you could add another....like an AirPort Express, for example....to "extend" the signal wirelessly and provide more coverage.
This is always a bit tricky, because the AirPort Express would need to be located where it can receive a strong signal from the main AirPort wireless router.
For example, if you need more wireless signal in a bedroom at the end of the house, you would locate the AirPort Express about half way between the main AirPort router and the bedroom.
On a side note......only the print function will work when you connect an All-in-One device to the USB port on an AirPort, so connect the All-in-One using wireless for full functionality.

  • I have a 5 year old Dell PC and purchased the Airport Express last year.  After one of the iphone 4s updates I lost the contact and cannot reestablish.  I have even tried to hard wire from my router to the airport express and I cannot connect.

I have a 5 year old Dell PC and purchased Airport Express last year.  I used my iphone 4s to connect and it has been working until recently I lost connection after one of the iphone updates.  I cannot make contact with the unit.  I have even used an ethernet cable that I hooked to my router and still won't work.  I cantinually get this message from Airport Utility.  An error has occurred and I can not do anything else.

If you have the AirPort Express setup in Bridge Mode, try changing the Connection Sharing setting to "Share a public IP address"
    AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address
    Update
You will probably get a message about a Double NAT error. Click to "ignore"
This setting might allow mutliple devices to connect and may not. It's worth a try...I have about a 60-70% success rate at hotels with this setting.
Unfortunately, as you note....hotels have become a lot smarter about connections to their network. At some point, they probably will not even allow another router to connect at all.

  • Extend Wireless Network using a Telstra technicolor Gateway wireless Router to Airpot extreme but Airport will only except join not extend and I can not get a network on the Airpor Extreme ethernet ports but can ping Airport extreme from Technicolor Rout/

Extend Wireless Network using a Telstra technicolor Gateway wireless Router to Airpot extreme but Airport will only except "join a wireless network (which it does) not "extend a wireless network" (Led turns yellow and I can not get a network working on the Airpor Extreme ethernet ports but can ping Airport extreme from Technicolor Router.
    Airport gets it address DHCP.

Funny how I can ping the Extreme but the Hard Ethernet ports dont seem to work correctly.
When the AirPort Extreme is configured to "Join" a wireless network, the Ethernet ports are not enabled.
Oddly, the AirPort Express has a special feature that will allow it to to "Join" virtually any wireless network.....and the Ethernet port can be enabled. So, an Express would work for your purpose to provide an Ethernet connection to the media player. This assumes that the Express is located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from your main router.
Note that the Express will not provide any additional wireless coverage when it "Joins".

my g3 os 9.2.2 is connected to airport router. i can print from my pwerbook but g3 does't see the printer

Yes, when I bought my powerbook and airport and first set it up the chooser showed the HP 842C printer.
The printer is connected to the USB on the Airport.
The PB sees the G3 as a server (2 hard drives).
Do I need to set up the PB as a server on the G3? How do I do that?
I've tried Apple share, but when I try to connect to PB address or the name the G3 freezes.

  • I recently replaced my dead airport router with a netgear91-5g router and synced it successfully to my Lexmark Pro 915 printer and my computer and yet when I try to print wirelessly I get the message: "printer not connected; printer offline".

I recently replaced my dead airport router with a Netgear91-5g router and synced it successfully to my Lexmark Pro 915 printer and my computer; yet when I try to print wirelessly I get the message: "printer not connected; printer offline". Lexmark support verified that my printer was connected to the new router and the problem was with the computer's printer configuration and they could reconfigure it online if I paid for their "Premium Support" services ($119 for one year, 3 fixes). I declined, feeling sure that this is something I could do if I knew how. Could it be an incompatability issue with OS 10.8.3?

You saved me $$$ that I can ill afford on my fixed income. I was very unhappy with the "support" from Lexmark... what a rip off!  Thank you dwb!

  • My 4s continues to lose wi-fi and reverts to 3G even when the phone is 4 ft from the router.

My 4s continues to lose wi-fi and reverts to 3G even when the phone is 4 ft from the router. Is this a defect in my phone? It happens when I am home and I switch to my wi-fi. It doesn't matter where the phone is in relation to the router. Please note, I have my phone set to NOT sleep. Does any one know why my phone reverts to 3G? I have to manually set it to wi-fi every time this happens.

I have the same issue with my iPhone 4s. It was not an issue when I was using iOS5, but it started once I upgraded to iOS6 and the recent update of iOS6.0.1 did not fix it. Judging from the release notes, Apple thinks this is only an iPhone 5 issue, as they say they fixed it for iPhone 5's.
I have an iPad 2 (iOS6.0.1) and a 3rd generation iPod touch (latest iOS5 release), as well as an Apple TV 2. None of the other devices have this problem and they are all on the same network.
Something interesting... my iPhone 4s works fine on the wifi where I work. At home, it continually turns on and off. My home network is using a Netgear router (WNDR3400) and the iPhone is connecting to it using WPA2+PSK protocol. Hopefully, this information can help Apple figure out the problem.
(I remember my iPod Touch having a similar issue a few years ago with iOS 4, when I had a different Netgear router using the same security protocol. I think iOS 5 fixed it for the iPod Touch... I wonder if some Apple products have an issue with Netgear Routers using that encryption.)

  • Network disappears completely from Airport on iMAC, G4 Powerbook +iPhone 4

    Can anybody please help..!
My network has disappeared completely from Airport on iMAC, G4 Powerbook + iPhone 4 and even after restarting the router several times the network does not reappear. It's been 2 days now and i need it to work from home urgently.
    thanks in advance !

    Hi Shane
if it's missing from three devices, I imagine that you may need to connect to it via ethernet cable & see if the wireless id is set to be hidden, as well as checking the setup pages to see if wireless is actually operating correctly.
Something like iStumbler or WiFi Scanner should help you determine that too.

  • Provide steps to connect HPLJ P1102w to AirPort router (MacOSX 10.5.8)

Please provide deterministic set of steps for connecting HP LJ P1102w wirelessly to AirPort router (MacOSX 10.5.8).
I recently bought a HP LaserJet P1102w in the hopes that since it supports AirPrint and my OS, I should be able to quickly and easily connect it to my wireless network, which has been running without any hitches, except the occasional rebooting of the router.  I've tried everyhing, including reading the quick start guide and the on-CD manual that came with the printer (two things that as a convert from PCs to Macs several years back, I have learned shouldn't really even be necessary, when things just work out of the box.)
I have gone through the standard install on the SW CD, gone through the steps to upgrade fhe firmware, and tried various combinations of the steps indicated in the conflicting suggestions I found in the quick start, CD user manual, and in the online support site that HP has set up in lieu of actual human support.  At one point, through some combination of (not all documented) steps that I can not reproduce, I managed to get to a web-based configueation page on the printer, and successfully provided my net SSID and password, and confirmed by having the printer produce it's configuration page that it did have the settings to connect to my wireless network.  However, the IP address it was reporting was still a standard "local" IP address (starting with 169.xx.xx.xx), rather than being on the correct subnet for my actual network (10.xx.xx.xx).  And I could no longer get to the printers web-based config page (no matter what IP I tried in my browser) to check/adjust settings.
i found in another location the suggestion to go through the System Preferences to get to the Print Queue, and select Utiltiy --> HTMLConfig..., which I also tried tonight, but as soon as I click the HTMLConfig... button, the Utility simply closes and nothing else happens.
I'm on the verge of returning the printer if I can't get it configured correctly. As it is, I'm very displeased that I've had to spend this much time trying to get set up (and it's still not working).  I used to build computers from scratch back in the day-- but that was "for the fun" of trying to get all the pieces to work together, correct drivers installed, etc. -- but I thought we were far beyond that for end-user products that are intended to work out of the box.  And I'm surprised at the lack of quality / consistency in the documentation provided by HP.
Any help other users (or hopefully HP!) can provide would be appreciated, *particularly* it it's in the form of "reset to facory settings by pressing these buttons, and perform these steps to ensure a successful installation."
    Thanks.

    Airport Troubleshooting Guide

Hey Carolyn thank's for your reply!
The Airport Troubleshooting Guide is great. Unfortunately did not help in my case.
(I tried a lot of other things, too. Installing the combo update 10.5.8, resetting PRAM, deleting keychain entries, removing Aiport adapter in the list of network adaptors, removing known networks and so one. Nothing did a change!)
What did help indeed was to plug in the Mac by ethernet cable and configure the Airport Express base station to a different channel. Then it works like charm (again), as you suggested, too.
I tested with another (d-link) wlan (b/g) station and confirmed my first suspicion that it has something to do with the channel and not with the base station or some configuration.
Both, channel 12 and 13 are NOT working, but all others do fine!
This is a bug (introduced in 10.5.8 or maybe 10.5.7, I am not sure?). I repeat, this is a bug and unrelated to the wifi battery issues described by others. I guess I will file a feedback report.
As a work-around, switch to another channel. I am not sure what happens to people who have channel left to "automatic" and the base station changes to 12 or 13 by itself. (Is this technically possible?) I think they will get problems. Definetely.

  • Connected to wifi but internet won't work (airport router)

    Help,
I've tried everything to get my ipad to connect to the internet. It says there is an excellent connection to my router (airport) and my imac & iphone work fine.
    So far I have:
    fogotten the network
    reset the network
reset my ipad (completely and reinstalled everything)
turned off the airport router for 2 minutes
Added static ip address, sub address and DNS
    Does anyone have any ideas?
Earlier in the week I had an amplifier installed to improve the signal for my cable modem. Could that be interfering with just my ipad?
Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi!
So I'll explain my problem and how I fixed it.
I have two macs and iphones in the house. I use an airport time capsule.
    The ethernet works just fine.
Wifi on one iphone and one mac works fine.
The other two don't. If I self-assign an IP address, the other mac works, but the iphone still doesn't work.
I searched everywhere and tried a lot of crazy stuff.
    Here's what was wrong:
The airport was not assigning an IP address, or it was too slow so the mac and iphone assigned their own. A self assigned IP looks like this:
    169.254.xxx.xxx
Internet connection does not work with an IP address space of 169.254.xxx.xxx from ISP, router, or manual configuration
An IP assigned by the airport (DHCP), should look like this:
    (10.0.1.25 or similar).
Solution: Reset the airport to factory settings. Reconfigure wifi network.
Took 5 minutes. Super easy. Fixed everything. Now all devices work, no problem. The airport automatically assigns proper IPs.
Also, if you have a backup on your Time Capsule, don't worry. It won't be deleted, and when you connect to the newly configured airport with Time Machine, it will automatically find the old backups and continue as usual (just tried this today. absolutely no problems.
    Hope that helps everyone!
I hope it reaches the people who need it!

  • Reverting from AirPort Client Update 2009-002 to anything else.

I never update Airport because it seems every time I do, something goes a miss. Everything was perfect, no issues at all. By mistake, I did update to Airport Update 2009-02.
Now connections randomly drop to AP, can't disable WiFi, when it does reconnect have to force IP renew, then moments later connection drops again.
I want to revert. Yes, I know, there is no way to do that.
    I will not accept:
+ Try fussing with my AP (SSID, Security, etc) that's not the problem - the problem is clearly the driver - it worked fine until the dumb update.
+ Try deleting \ adding networks.
    + Archive and Reinstall.
    + TimeMachine restores.
Perhaps there are some files I could extract from the package and replace on my machine?
That's my line of thought.. Any ideas are appreciated, except for the ones excluded above. Thanks

    rferrentino wrote:
Just extracting the 2009-01 pkg file only has only the IO80211Family.kext file …
If you mean AirPort Client Update 2009-001, it has much more than a single file in it. The installed IO80211Family.kext appears to be a single file, but like many items it is actually a package (a special kind of folder) containing many files.
In Finder, right-click on the installed version in /System/Library/Extensions & choose "Show package contents" to see what I mean. Likewise, you can use Pacifist to fully expand the package contents of the download & see something similar.
Just replacing this file + fixing permissions did not work.
No surprise there -- it is what my "hard way" comment alluded to. To understand why it didn't work, consider first that a package is actually a structured group of related files containing resources designed to work together as a unit. The files often have internal references to one another & other mutual dependencies in their code. Thus, you can't simply substitute one file with another from a different package -- the files won't have fully compatible resources & won't work properly as a unit.
But there is more to it than that. An installer doesn't just replace files. In fact, although the package contents of an installer & the installed package look similar, they are actually quite different. (Comparing the two as suggested above with Pacifist & Finder will show that.) You can think of an installer package as the raw ingredients of the installed package plus the recipe to make it, housekeeping instructions for tidying up beforehand & afterwards, & the resources the process requires to do all of that. (Check the "Resources" tab in Pacifist to show the resource files.)
Often there is even more to it than that. Many OS packages have mutual dependencies on one another, just as their contents do. The "family" name isn't an arbitrary one -- just as with any family there are parents & children in the IO (input/output) extension family. Mixing members of different families leads to conflicts, often ones that interfere with more than the functionality of the 'foreign' member. Apple's software update mechanism & the installers themselves are designed to prevent this mismatch; when you bypass that it is up to you to manually do everything they do if you expect everything to work together without problems.
The root of the problem? The old driver worked, the new one has issues. How much simpler could it be?
As I hope the above makes clear, it isn't as simple as it seems. You can think of the OS as a very complex machine with thousands of precision parts, each of which must be undamaged & compatible with the others. One bad part can cause problems seemingly quite unrelated to its function, making the job of finding & replacing it much less straightforward than you might imagine. And if you don't do that, the damage will spread, especially when you 'overhaul' (update) the machine with new parts but miss the bad one.
That's why you so often see the advice to reinstall the OS. In effect, that replaces the machine with a brand new one with known-good parts, sparing you the usually very tedious task of tracking down & replacing just the original bad part & any others it has damaged.
But you said in the beginning that you don't want to do that. That seriously limits your choices, mostly to those that require substantial knowledge of the OS & its internal interdependencies to achieve success.
In short, it isn't a simple machine. Treating it as if it is won't get the job done.

  • Acces time capsule from different router

Every time I try to connect from my devices. (Macbook pro, iPhone, iPad and W7) from another router in my house, the time capsule goes offline. I can't access through file sharing or airport utility.
As soon as I connect to my time capsule Wi-Fi, there is no problem. Is there a way to connect to the time capsule without having to connect my time capsule.
I live in a big house, when some old isolating which interrupts the signal.
My time capsule have the 7.7.3 version installed on it.
Can anybody help me? Thank you.

I have the Zyxel VMG8924-B10A, which is functioning as our Router. Which goes through a switch and then up to my TC.
The TC is in router mode.
Looking at your pictures.. thanks for posting them.. I can figure out what I need from most of the shots.. you are not routing on the TC.. you have it correctly set to bridge mode.
So your issue of the TC actually failing at the point of access is harder to follow.
I do want you to do a clean up of the names.
At the moment you have names with spaces.. this is not going to help windows and nowadays it won't help the Mac to work reliably either.
You can even changed the disk name to Time Capsule which won't work in windows.
So please factory reset the TC and start over.
Rename the base station to TCgen5, wireless to TCwifi and hard disk name to say TCdata (your USB drive you can ignore for now).
It should still be in bridge mode and otherwise the same.
Once you get it going again.. if you still have issues try plugging the ethernet from the switch.. into a LAN port instead of WAN.. it doesn't matter which you use actually once bridged. Do the connectivity lights on the switch show everything is working ok?
Once you do the above in windows.. it is well worth while loading the airport utility for windows if you have not already done so.. it may not work well with the later Airport routers but it does provide bonjour for windows and some other utilities.
Tell me then how it goes. There is also a domain issue which can cause problems so I might get you to post a netstat scan from the airport utility in one of the main computers.

Hi my airport router ( ateast i think this is where the problem originates) has been turning off intermittenly for the past week, when it does this NO devices recieve internet connection, mac, pc,iphone, ipad, wireless or hardwired directly to the router. However they all show to be connected with their corresponding bars and the ip's are all fine. Earlier today it started flucuating on and off about every 5 min making work impossible and now it seems to be completely broken (im currently on my iphone connected though its own internet) Does anyone know how or ehy this happened and how i can fix this? And to know if this originates from the router or something else entirely. Thank you!

Hi - some clarifications would help narrow down some symptoms - just what has been turning off? - has the light been solid green but the modem isn't providing wi-fi? - or is the light flashing yellow with no internet? - which can mean several things - does the light go out completey? - so if you can report on exactly what is happenening and when, maybe someone can help you - we also need to know if there any error messages along the way -  we also need the types of devices involved and how they are attached - kind of like a nework map  - the more info that you provide, the more answers you will get.
