Clean Sweep: A warning

For weeks I have been trying to get Cont CS3 to work with
DW8. It used to work with XP + SP2 but now with SP3 it won't,
unless that's a coincidence. On the advice of Adobe Tec Support I
used Adobe's Clean Sweep at Level 4. PLEASE DON'T. This produced a
very unstable system which refused to re-boot causing me a Win
repair from the XP disc after endless tinkerings in the registry.
(Level 4 takes out every Adobe product – which may not be a
bad thing–but much else besides. Incidentally if you ever run
Clean Sweep click NO to preview and NO to backup registry which
would not seem to be the logical thing to do. On trying to
reinstall DW CS3 (which I had to buy) installation wouldn't work
till I picked up from these forums that the Adobe setup is less
than perfect. Holding my breath I ran Clean Sweep again but at
level 2. DW then installed. Hope this helps.

within extras/organize you have the option to view a calendar based on categories.
This allows us to select multiple dates and delete them.
Regarding the import problem: It appears that the OBEO-support for an alternative calendar in the personal workspace is currently limited.

Hi. I need to do the "clean sweep" procedure I've been hearing so much about on here. Can someone give me a link to it's

  • Clean Sweep

This question is from my friend, as you'll notice in my 'model' section, I don't own an iBook. Her iBook is the final rev, she bought it about two months before the Macbook came out. I don't know all the specs, but I know she's not running iLife 06 but her computer is fully updated otherwise. Also, I think she's running 1GB of RAM.
    Her question:
"I'm wanting to know how I can clear out all my stored passwords and make my computer safe to be used by other people w/o doing a clean sweep on the whole thing.
I know I can set up users and stuff like that, but I don't want to do that and I have reasons that aren't worth sharing. I basically just want to clear out all sensitive info and I'm wondering if there's a way to do only that. Furthermore, I want to make sure I don't lose my Microsoft Office but I do want to de-authorize my purchased music on the iBook b/c I've transfered it to another computer and don't want anyone loading it on their iPod from my iBook."
Hope you all can help her...

To expand on roam's response a bit:
Go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Accounts
    Click padlock and authenicate
Click plus sign under login options
Create new user by entering a name and password (I don't advise creating an account without a password as the system requires a password when installing certain system software and will not accept a blank password field).
Check box to Allow user to administer this computer.
Go to Apple menu and down to the last item and log out user...
    Log as new user
Go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Accounts
    Authenticate with new password
Select old user account in sidebar
Click the minus sign under login items.
When asked if you to completely delete, answer Yes.
You have now completely deleted the old user, preferences and data.
    Click on Login Options
Check top box in main panel to Automatically login and toggle the menu to the current user.
    Quit System Preferences.
Now anyone can log into the computer.
If this was not intended by your question, please post back and clarify.
    Good luck.

  • Clean sweep a calendar

    Dear beekeepers,
the attempt to import data into an second, alternative calendar in a personal workspace using outlook resulted in the data getting imported into the default calendar of the workspace (probably a bug?).
as thousands of ics-entries were imported: how could we clean sweep such a calendar.
we would have expected that the export dialogue offers to delete all exported data.
    we are using outlook 2003.

  • Old User Removal / Clean Sweep

    Hi All,
I wondered if I could tap into your wealth ofknowledge.
I recently bought an IMAC G5 from someone who had it as an unwanted Birthday present.
Unfortunately, he setup a user called DoctorEvil, which I am trying to remove.
However, it keeps cropping up whenever I open up iphoto/itunes etc etc
What I need to do is basically a software re-install and get me back to how it was if I purchased it from a store. Can I do that ? The only disc I have is the panther install disk - this will not remove old users will it ?

    Hi Grifforama,
Welcome to the Apple Discussion Forums.
The Panther install CD will reset your computer to how the unit would have been purchased from store.
Simply insert the CD and hold the letter "C" key down to boot the computer from the CD and go through the step by step instructions.
There are some installation options and format options have a good look through all the menus, this will give you an idea of what can be done from this install CD for future reference.

  • Random Kernel Panics even after Clean Install from Genius Bar

Despite being "all apple" I'm about fed up with these kernel panics and ready to convert!
I believe these started with Lion... I'm now fully updated on Maverick.
    Nothing has seemed to change.
I took my iMac to the Genius Bar after I finally figured out a way to replicate a panic.
After all sorts of memory, and other hardware tests they suggested and performed a clean sweep.
I came home, restored with Time Machine, and thought all was well...
Now, a week later I'm back to having restarts in the middle of extensive projects.
I've had two in the past two hours.
I initially diagnosed it as anytime a large file (2GB+) was being moved, saved, or when a back up or virus scan was being performed.
Then it happened at other times and proved that wrong.
Then I assumed it was RAM. I took it out, cleaned, and performed multiple tests. All was good and up.
Then I could reproduce it while working with a LARGE file in iMovie.
Thats when I took it to the Bar.
Now, I'm long out of iMovie and working mainly in Google Chrome with nothing else opened, but Evernote, and FileZilla, which I have used for years.
The last two panics have included the :  0xdeadbeefdaadbeef

  • Can't do Clean Swee

I am getting no sound out of my system since I installed a new wireless network card. I have checked for conflicts (none) and have reinstalled the sound card, but nothing works. I have a Li've! 5. Value card on my Win XP Professional system.
I checked the Knowledge Base and found the instructions for doing a CleanSweep.
    http://us.creative.com/support/kb/article.asp?l=2&sid=72
    Unfortunately, I can't do step 6:
Click Start, Run and then Browse. Browse to Z:\Audio\Drivers (Where Z:\ represents the CD Rom dri've), and run CTZAPXX.EXE, or SETUP.EXE if you have a Sound Blaster X-Fi card. Choose YES if you receive a prompt "Overwrite existing shared creative audio driver files?"
The software that I can download from the site will extract the files to memory and try to install. If I cancel the installation, I still can't access the files, because they haven't been written to disk.
    Any advice?
    Thanks

Did you try to remove your WIFI first then clean sweep your sound drivers?
You also may need to set up the bios for your mainboard. Dissable all Wake On Lan fuctions.
    Hope that hel
    ps.

  • PowerBook G4 System Sweep

Can someone help me do a system sweep on my PowerBook, where you completly wipe everything off the computer, and start over again, just like a brand new computer? I need to do this because I dont have much hard drive space left, and thousands of unwanted files, and some files I don't know how to delete. I would really appreciate the help.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

While I think such a clean sweep is a good idea to keep a system healthy, I don't know if you really have to do it for hard drive space. I would prefer to just free up space and do the clean sweep the next time I upgraded my OS.
Go around to the folders in your home directory (and anywhere else if you have created folders elsewhere) and do a Get Info (File menu or Apple-I). It will report the size of each folder (after a while). That should help you find what is talking the bulk of your hard drive space. Then, go into that folder and do the same thing. You might be able to get some space back, find and locate important files and back them up, and do a clean sweep a little later.

  • Clean swap

    imac G5 panther.
Just sucessfully installed a new hard drive in my imac. I am giving the imac to my sister for Christmas, so i didn't initiate the sign up process when asked. I wanted her to sign up as the administrator when she gets the computer. Will any data show up in the finder since the imac still has the same memory and logic board, even with the new hard drive installed? Someone told me that i had to change everything for a clean sweep. I think that person is wrong. Thank you.

    John:
    Nice brother!
Will any data show up in the finder since the imac still has the same memory and logic board, even with the new hard drive installed?
If you installed the new HDD, formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and installed Panther fresh and shut down just before the setup, there is no data on the HDD. All data is stored in the Users Folder on the Hard Disk Drive (not on the logic board, or RAM memory). Your informant is mistaken.
Good luck, and have a Merry Christmas!

  • Clean Content - where is latest - not on eDelivery

I looked at edelivery to get the latest version of CleanContent - I have 2101.2 installed. But in the latest version of OI (8.3.5) there is no CleantContent, and in the previous releaes (8.3.2) CleanContent appears to be version 2009.1 or something like that.
So, where do I get the latest version of CleanContent?
    Toby

The latest component is here, version 2009_03_05 (build 2) ($Rev: 71111 $). However, if you want to update to the latest OI technology, you'll need to modify the component using the Clean Content SDK (warning: 120+ MB).

  • Malware help

Ok, I am going to pose this question first as a hypothetical, so please resistant insulting me or jumping down my throat.  If someone had malware, a non replicating form of something that seems to be able to remotely access computer, change permissions, pretty much run the show and do whatever they want, and it is on a macbook pro, what would it mean if this malware is resistant to a.)a clean sweep of the harddrive and reinstall from apple internet recovery b.)  a freshly installed SSD c.) a wiped SSD and recovery parition via starting in recovery from Snow Leopard CD that came with macbook, and a fresh install of snow leopard (symptoms arose before maverick was upgraded too and got worse with upgrade.)
Symptoms are vast, and change rapidly, but can be expounded upon.  Most recent, this morning, includes all internet pages, downloads, etc in both Safari and Firefox showing up in german for 5 minutes then switching back, the whole time my ip remains in the US.  Letters from my ISP telling me I have malware connecting out to ports that when googled are associated with XSAN (i am on a one person personal network connected via ethernet with no wi fi enabled and did not know what XSAN was until this).  Persistent loss or complete degradation of processing ability and internet as a result of ddos attacks (teardrop type attacks, and syn floods, all new terms to me explained by isp, but fit what is happening, as my console messages at the time of system freeze indicate "too many threads, etc, indicative of a full cache).  Console that has consistent strange errors that I have tried to ignore everytime the system starts to perform strangely, as I admittedly am usually wrong when trying to interpret error messages, especially when I have one thing in my head I am resistant to other ideas, but continue to weird me out, and have fallen more and more into the pattern: I google, find a very few instances of said message and most have to do with bad things regarding malware etc.  Little snitch investigating showing usereventagents and all kinds of supposed system processes connecting out to weird eastern european ips that when googled all lead to PC spyware posts or network administration sites warning of bot storage locations .  Trying to save any console logs on a USB or desktop often results in corruption.  Consistently get errors I have never seen, both in console and outwardly in apps that key files have been changed.  Rampant graphic problems, like I am using OSX1 with the windows are moving with tracelines not realtime, no opaqueness, etc, that come and go (may be conflict with X11 and maverick and unrelated) (right now everything is running great graphically and do not have x11).  10 minutes ago my printer which I just used a couple hours ago tells me it was misconfigured or something, and then makes me redownloaded and install something and when printing says, "printing from pc" which it never says (prob does usually say this and I am just paranoid now ha).
Things that have been tried with clean installs:
1.)  Assuming i am crazy and systematically ignoring every impulse to investigate, download any security apps, google or even look at console.  Acknowledging the fact that all this started when I first started reading about networking, and prob medical students syndrome, ha.  Am finally forced too when Internet has stopped responding completely and system consistently freezes and will only last 5-10 munutes without hard power down.  (Took about 3 days to reach that state, gets progressively worse).  This whole time had no little snitch, no sophos or clamxav, no dns setttings, standard but strong router settings, no proxies or VPNs or opendns or Tor or anything.  Calls to ISP about internet cutout show me connecting via a proxy at first and then not, but when checked on my end through whatismyisp, terminal, etc etc show normal ip.  Used safari, allowed javascript, but still did not download flash.   Was careful of websites I visited.  Only downloaded from App store.  (So had to sign in with apple id).  Was utimately told by a ceritifed mac technician over the phone that he had no idea what was going on and he had never seen anything like the combo of errors i was getting.
2.)  Doing opposite, and investigating everywthing, using OpenDNS, working with someone in network administration to see packets, using a hardened firefox, little snitch, etc etc.
3.)  Hardware test via CD that came with 2010 macbook pro.  Came back clean.
All same results basically.  So, if this was happening to someone, would anyone have any advice?  If I was to hook up macbook to anbother macbook via Firewire in Target disk mode and used disk warrior to wipe it, then install via snow leopard CD and updated without my apple id, would this make any difference?
What I am NOT suggesting as that would be stupid, is an EFI level trojan that loads at startup before the OS, something as far as I've read is only theoretical at this point.  If this was the case, would a screen showup at startup in verbose before anything else that says loading from EFI bootloader ACPI :  Long number, or is that completely normal?  Is there anything in a verbose startup that would be indicative, and more importantly, does it matter, ie would it be reversible?
What do i do about internet connectivity?  I have changed passwords about a 100 times, tried just the OS firewall, just the ISP firewall, a combo, litte snitch no little snitch, WPA2 always with AES encryption, no remote administration in router settings, no sharing at all in OS settings, no accesibility for any apps, etc etc, have both enabled and completely disabled wireless from router each for multiple days.
Any help would be appreciated, basically, how do you nuke a macbook, and if that doesn't work, assume hardware failure and get a new one and write it off as unfortunate and weird, and if that doesn't work, move and change your name

As I said repartition and reformat your drive:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion on a New HDD/SDD
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
If your model is too old to support Internet Recovery, then use your Snow Leopard DVD instead:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Use the computer afterwards as is to see if the problem has been squashed. If so, then be very careful what and how you restore things. Third-party applications should all be re-installed from their source media. Use AV software capable of discovering the most recent infections to scan your data files before restoring them.

  • The Adobe Marriage is Over

Just want to put this out there. In the ancient days, when a husband and wife were through, the man would publicly say to his wife, "I divorce you, I divorce you, I divorce you.", three times, and the covenant was broken.
I've been faithful to Adobe since pre-Photoshop 6 days. I've bought and installed and used almost every Adobe brand at one point or another for my business, from Audition to Lightroom to Premiere to Illustrator and all the little in-betweens, dealing with glitches and reinstalls and patches and system hangs... I've upgraded all of my computers, spent thousands keeping up with the latest hardware and graphics cards, RAM, you name it, just to stay in a relationship with you.
All these years later, after such a long relationship, I have to say I've been duped one too many times. I'm no longer faithful to you because you are no longer faithful to me. I'm no longer drinking the Cool-Aid. Chalk it up to too the $$$ lost in production, the minutes and hours that just slip through our hands in forums, the one-too-many support tech's telling me, "You know, you just need to uninstall everything and run a clean sweep." I Especially liked the guy last week who told me through his many sighs and his short impatience that I was basically not worth his time.
This morning I've retrofitted my computers back to CS3, after spending almost 60 hours this week, just on you, in the middle of our Christmas rush, sifting through forums, talking on the phone with Adobe support, getting nowhere while my clients wait. There's no more time for counseling.
I won't bite anymore, Adobe... I'll use your product, your older product, because I have to. but my affection for you, my desire to understand your ways, has been leeched away.
I'm tired of being your guinea pig. I don't know who you're catering to these days, but it's not the little guy who hold you up, the guy in the trenches trying to keep his trade afloat and support his family in a spiraling economy.
And it's my fault. I readily admit. I bought it all, hook line and sinker.
I should have used the money I spent for CS4 to give my kids a better Christmas. I know that now, on the other side of a cold and blue, Scrooge-of-a-shoulder. I'll take that responsibility. But...
    No more.
    No more.
    No more.
Like I said, just want to put this out there...publicly.
Today I have to use Photo Mechanic to filter through my images. Then I have to use Bridge CS4 to color, and finally, now, back to Photoshop CS3 to edit and tone my final images. It's a hodge-podge just to get the job done. (p.s...just googled for the first time ever...'best photoshop alternative')
On to Christmas, and enough of the Bah Humbugs. There are brighter, more important things. Eternal things. And Thank you! Really. You've been a perfect example to me that all things are truly just passing away.

I agree wholeheartedly with the OP, but it's not about the pricing issue. It's about the fact that Adobe increasingly rushes products to market without fully testing them. They limit their beta testing to a select group of power users who, because they are advanced users, don't use the mundane tools that everyone else does. So we get things like a trainwreck called Photoshop CS4. Any Flash users out there? Flash CS4 is by far the worst release of Flash ever, in terms of bugs and stability. And, unlike Photoshop, the Flash guys cling to the old Macromedia culture of NEVER issuing patches to their software.
So what did I get for my money in so loyally and eagerly upgrading to CS4? Photoshop which works like molasses on a winter's day. Flash which has numerous new tools geared to animators (like me), along with so many seemingly small but serious bugs that it is LETHAL for any animator to even touch that program, and which any average user would have detected in beta testing. Fireworks has plenty of problems. And, well, I never use Illustrator. But my core apps - Photoshop and Flash - have cost me not only money, but time on these forums, time trying to convince Adobe engineers to work on bugs, and huge time lost in projects that failed because of software bugs and had to be rebuilt from scratch in older versions of the software (I'm talking mainly Flash here; I can't even begin to use Photoshop CS4).
Then I read way too often, on this forum and the Flash forum, posts from Adobe people blaming hardware, blaming third party drivers, blaming the OS. And suggestions like "reformat", dump your anti-virus. On the Flash forum, the Adobe response is mostly, "We deny there is a bug", but open a support case. So I open a support case and all I get in response is awkward workaround solutions, not any acknowledgement that there is a bug. What a piss poor attitude.
I don't blame Adobe engineers. Clearly if they can fix bugs, they will, if they're given the chance, and there are a couple in particular who participate in this forum who are sincere in their efforts. How long until Adobe executives see no financial benefit in paying their engineers to fix problems past a certain point? Someone else above said Adobe can't always bat 1000. Why not? Why shouldn't they? Their products should be perfect. Would auto executives say, "Oh well, can't always be perfect" if "only" 1 percent of their buyers were killed or injured because of a manufacturing defect?
I have been warning every animator and artist I know to steer a wide path away from any of the CS4 apps. I want to spend my time creating art, and using excellent software tools to help me...not doing workarounds and refiguring hardware and reformatting and trying to compensate for Adobe's errors.
My marriage with Adobe is over as well. I'm going back to Photoshop CS3 and Flash 8, the last truly stable versions of those programs.
I read that Adobe is having financial problems because sales of CS4 have been lower than expected. Good. They deserve it. No one should buy their latest products, period.
