Not very good in my opinion, & if you go to the trouble of using any of the complivated/time consuming other wats to defrag, OSX starts fragmenting again.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
In general, don't use Windex; alchohol-based solvents can disolve the antiglare coating on CRT glass (whether an eMac or a flatscreen TV). Your profile shows 9.2.2 which says you have a first-generation nVidia graphics eMac; you can actually get away with using small (really small, as in barely moisten a cloth) amounts of Windex or the like, but it's not a good idea in general. You can actually get good rsults using nothing more than distilled water and a clean lint-free cloth. Cleaning your eMac's guts without taking it to the shop

Greetings:
I've had my 1.25mHz eMac for two years since I had the logic board replaced, which was likely the last time the innards got a real thorough cleaning. I don't know, but it might look like a dust bunny hutch in there now. Are there any ways check out/clean the insides without a $$$ shop visit or cracking the case?

no you have to open up the case. I just did mine today because I needed to change out the combo drive. It wasnt too bad after 4 years. Everything is pretty well sealed, So I vacumed on low suction (with the plastic adapter) around anything that the tool would reach of course touching a metal part to avoid static. It was really easy. then I cleaned around the fan (which was the worst) and the case. Just stay away from the monitor side due to High voltage... and as a precaution have it unplugged for 12 hours before you begin.

Cleaning the microprosessor on the logic board

I have an eMac 2002... I am trying to clean the heat sink and the microprocessor on my logic board so that I can apply new thermal paste. I heard to use 90% alcohol, anyone who tried it?
Another thing, I know this is for iMac and Mac minis but maybe some of you had an eMac before... There is a film on the microprocessor covering the whole square like a thin clear plastic one, does that come off before the new thermal paste or not?
And also my optical drive carrier again from the older eMac like all has a metal heat shield. The service manual calls for a cotter pin to hold it in place. I do not remember having a cotter pin there when I was disassembling it. However there is this plastic pin I found on the floor that may have popped without me noticing while I was taking it off. It looks like a screw but plastic without the threads instead a pop in type of kind. Any clues? Can this be the pin?

That film thing was on there... This is the first time I opened it and was kinda puzzled with it... It is like some small square plastic with a smaller square in the middle. I peeled it already being so curious. I think it was a unique thermal pad with the paste already on it like double sticky tape... Sides were covered with what looked like silver thermal paste and the inner square with a black looking paste... I know sounds crazy, but that is what is on my microprocessor...

How do i clean the air vents on my hp pavilion dv6 notebook pc?

Latelly, the fan on my HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC has been noiser than usual and it appears that my notebook becomes quite warm to the touch. The HP Support Assistant running on my notebook PC recommended that I can reduce the heat and fan noise by cleaning the air vents. How do I do this? Can I do this myself or do I have to have a professional do it?

You can clean the vents on your notebook.
Buy a can of compressed air. Essentially, you need to gently blow out the vents with the compressed air to clear out the dirt and dust. You need a can with a small straw like attachment for the nozzle so you can point it directly toward the vents.
Do take a look at this document first so you know which way to point the air and how to avoid damaging the fan inside the notebook.

I have a netgear router that I am trying to hook up to my emac and I keep on getting connection errors messages on the emac. why?

I recently received an eMac as a gift from a friend. I am having some problems setting it up. First, for some reason, I cannot get my osX disks to install onto my eMac. the eMac tells me the install disk is not bootable. Why would that be? So, I have os 9.2 installed on the eMac. I have the eMac connected to a netgear router, and when I set up all the ip settings in the eMac, I get connection errors. I do not know why. I can easily hook up any windows computer to a router, but when I try to connect an Apple Computer to a router or an ethernet modem, I always get connection errors. Why? What am I doing wrong? In the Apple System Profiler, the eMac tells me that it cannot identify the router. Why would that be? Do I need a special eMac driver for my netgear router? I have tried to find such a driver, but am having no success. I need help! Can someone please help me? I really want to use this eMac! But if I cannot get it set up for the internet, it is going into the junkyard! I really don't want that!

Encryption wouldn't matter except for Wifi.
While 10.2 might help, there's not much you can do on the Internet these days with less than 10.4.11

I miss the emac...

I need a new computer for artwork. Something I can AFFORD! So I've been planning on getting an emac! So I come here one day and see that they took the emac off the flippin store. That's so nice sarcasm!
Can you PLEASE BRING IT BACK!? The same thing happened with the iMac G4 which I had my eyes on for literally YEARS. I wanted the old one. I wish they'd stop getting rid of all the cool models.
They did the same with the colors. They should have kept the colors. Different colors made them more personal. Now everything is so plane and boring. Yes flat screens are nice, but come on! The neat model of computers made me more interested in them when I was a kid (and still do). They were eye catching. And a plus is they work better than any others. They don't even need colors. Bring on the shiny white + clear plastic! Makes them look all crystaly. Maybe make a line of models for women - we love the selections of colors.
What I wouldn't do for a clear ruby ibook G4 and emac... with pretty back-light keyboards. Think about it! How awesome would the ibook g4 look with translucent black interior, clear white keys that light up, and your selection of a clear colored plastic exterior?

Cleaning the guts of an HP B & W or Color LaserJet Printer

I currently have an HP4M LaserJet printer...it appears to have "died" after 20 years.
I have had to do meticulous internal cleaning of it in the past, when I toner cartridge would go bad, dumping toner into the printer. With brushes, lint free cloths, etc, you could clean the inside of the printer, after removing a few items; e.g., the paper feed roller mechanisms, the fuse roller, etc. The 4M's HP User's Manual showed how to do this. If you take time to do it properly, ...and this usually requires several hours to do...you will end up with crisp clean printouts...no excess toner-speckling on the printouts.
I am considering replacing the 4M with one of the following HP Laser Printers.

Am I correct that B & W is not striclty Black or White but also includes Gray-Scale like the 4M did ?
The P1102 appears to have the same (or similar) toner cartridge mechanism that the 4M did.
When you rermove it, you can see the gear mechanisms, etc....not yet sure about the fuse roller.
The Pro 400 printers look very much like the 4M externally, but I do not yet know about the internals.
The M251nw is a different animal.
It has a metal slide-out tray that holds 4 toner cartridges which appear to be "rectanglular" in shape.
Can this tray be removed by the user (for cleaning) if a cartridge dumps toner into the printer ?
Is the fuse roller accessible to the user for removal and cleaning ?
I have looked through the M251's User Manual, and this level of cleaning is not covered.
It only covers "cleaning" like an inkjet does for cleaning the printheads.
Somehow, I would think that the user should have access to the guts of the printer,
since a Tech Support person would also have to disassemble the printer for cleaning.

Colors are great because they provide you with color. But the cost of ownership is a lot higher because now you have 4 color toner cartridges. With the cost of toner cartridges hovering around US$130 each, you are looking at a cost of at least $520 in toner replacement costs. Granted you won't be using all the toner across the whole page but if you print photos or images, it will deplete quickly. Plus with 4 toner cartridges inside, the cartridges are fairly small.
Cost per prints for black and white hovers around 1 to 4 cents per copy. Color prints cost around 8 to 17 cents per copy. But I read somewhere from someone worker for a company selling the toner it can cost up to 30 to 75 cents per copy for a full page of color.
So in a nutshell, it's very expensive to have color.

Is there a way to use the eMac as an external monitor

I haven't used my Emac for awhile, but my 17" powerbook is now having a serious display problem and I can't even see the log-in screen. I want to use the Emac as an external monitor or at least have sharing between the two machines. They are both using 10.4.11. What do I need to do to connect them?

You need to connect them via ethernet or wirelessly, plus a product such as ScreenRecycler. Conventional video in isn't available on most Macs.

The urlclassifier3.sqlite file stores the encrypted contents of the phishing protection database and it is best to leave this file to avoid Firefox having to rebuild it.<br />
You can remove the file if it really gets to large (around 50 MB is not unusual).
The bookmarkbackups folder stores the daily created JSON backups with a maximum of 10.<br />
You can set that maximum in Firefox via the browser.bookmarks.max_backups pref on the about:config page.
It is best to leave the other files in the Firefox Profile Folder (Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\) intact, and use Clear Recent History if you want to remove data, to avoid database corruption.

HT201250 My MacBook is slow. I have a cleanup programme and I do not have many applications. I would like to clean the disk and restore from Time Machine. Will it still be slow?

I am frustrated having paid for "Clean My Mac" which I run regularly and using tips like cleaning the cache in Terminal view. It is still getting slower. Can I clean off the disk and reinstall from my Time Machine, or will it re load the problem too? How do I do this anyway?

Macbook Pro w/ Retina Display produces small white spots, how do I clean the screen?

How do I remove the white spots from the Macbook Pro display? The cleaning cloth takes out few of the spots, but I don't want to apply so much pressure on the display, as it may damage it. I'm a little nervous about using liquids, should I? Any solutions? Cloths? Liquids? Etc.

I've noticed that people offer various personal advice on this, but nobody references the engineers who actually designed and built the screen. I'm assuming Apple did consult the engineers on this issue and they actually took the time to write about it in the "MacBook Pro Important Product Information Guide." They probably thought it was important or something. ;-)
I'll quote page 2 from the 2012 rMBP version:
"Cleaning the McBook Pro Screen To clean your MacBook Pro screen, first shut down your MacBook Pro and unplug the power adapter. Then dampen the included cleaning cloth with just water and wipe the screen. Do not spray liquid directly on the screen." (Emphasis added.)
Coming from a machining background, I would recommend using a swirling motion to avoid wearing the screen in a uniform manner. Take note that this is not explicitly stated in the guide, and is probably not necessary considering the included cloth is so soft that it probably wouldn't affect the screen this way.
