"Clean up hard disk" question.

i am working through windows vista, step by step manual. i have a question about  system and maintenance > administration tools > free up disk space (also called "disc cleanup").
i wish to cleanup my hard drive to free up space and improve performance using this feature.
i am at the diologue box where you check the files you no longer need, or where not deleted upon a programs conclusion.
anyway, i want to check one box for "temporary files" that amount to 8 gigabytes of memory.
how do you know if it is safe to do this?
could i be deleting something important?
should i just leave it be?
i consulted windows vista help on this, and it said you can safely delete temporary files that have not been modified in over a week.
however, i see no listing of dates in the diologe/check box page.
any ideas anyone?

  • Dropped Frames in Viewer, and Hard Disk Questions

    Hi,
I'm new to FCE (v3.5.1) having just upgraded from iMovie. I'm on a 2GHz Core Duo MacBook with 2GB RAM. I have a 120GB internal drive that has 16GB free. In my initial use of FCE, I've run into two problems.
    (1) I'm finding that frames are regularly dropped during playback in the Viewer - as much as half the time. The same video clips playback flawlessly in iMovie and in Quicktime. These frames are on my MacBook's internal hard disk and are each roughly a minute in length.
I should note that these clips were exported from iMovie (I copied them out of an iMovie project file / package). Might this be causing the problem?
    (2) Also, I'm finding that the audio playback of these clips (that were copied from the iMovie package) is okay in the Viewer but not in the Canvas (I hear beeping) -- I found mention that the audio format of iMovie and FCE are different, so I expect I need to reimport these clips anyway. Is there an easy way around this?
    (3) I know I said two problems, but number 3 is a question, not a problem! Given my hardware setup described above, should I be able to get away with working with the clips located on an external Firewire hard disk? Or should I only work with clips located on my internal drive. Similarly, can I effectively work with a scratch disk that is external FW, or should I keep that on my internal drive?
    Thanks in advance,
    Tim

Need to know info more about the clips from iMovie.
Clips coming into FCE need to match the Sequence settings. This is set up before a Project begins using the Easy Setups. My guess is there is a mis-match.

The work around is to render, Command+R or Sequence>Render All from the menu.
iMovie uses DV Stream and is a multiplexed format whereas FCE uses DV. The QuickTime files that FCE likes has the audio seperate from the video allowing them to be edited with or without the video.

Using FCE an External firewire is a much better option than your internal.

  • HP Mini 1137NR hard disk question: is MK8034GAL compatible?

My Mini 1137NR hard disk is damaged, it's MK8025GAL 80G, but I can only find MK8034GAL, is it compatible with my Mini?

If it is the original OS it is more likely to be 32-bit.
There should be a sticker on the mini that has a product name and product number.
You can make a Windows 7 32 bit usb installer to use that will let you access startup repair. Use the Microsoft store's free Windows 7 USB\ DVD download utility to do that.
Here is a link to a Windows 7 32-bit ISO. You can burn it to a DVD or use a virtual DVD utility to mount it while making the USB installer.
I can find a video that demonstrates how to make the usb installer, if needed.

  • USB Hard Disk Question (Format Type)

    Hi,
I've bought a 500GB Hard Disk which I'd like to use for editing.
The Hard Disk works fine and I can Log and Transfer small video files ok. The problem occurs when I want to capture large video files. These always seem to error. The same large video files work fine if I capture straight to my iMac's internal Hard Disk.
I think the problem occurs when the video is greater than 4GB. Could this be related to the Format type of the USB Hard Disk?
If so how should I re-format the drive to work with large video files? And how do I do this on a Mac?
    Thanks,
    Richard.

A USB drive will not cut it for video editing. You will get dropped frames, either when editing or capturing to it. USB transfers data in bursts, not a continuous stream as FireWire does. Wile it might not be happening right now, it will once you start filling it up, having multiple tracks in FCP, etc.
Your drive came preformatted for Windows, as do most of them. The FAT file structure used has an individual file size limit of 4GB.
To reformat as for the Mac OS, use Disk Utility (In the Applications/Utilities folder).
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the drive in the column at left.
Click on Erase and choose Mac OS Extended, click the Erase button at bottom right to confirm.
This will of course, destroy all files currently on the drive. Back up first!
For best results, recapture your video again.

  • Beginner's hard disk question

    Hello,
At the moment I have a 2 TB green WD internal hard disk. If three disks is the minimum requirement, can I add a 1 TB caviar black WD or is the green useless for video editing, which means I should get 2x 1TB caviar black WD?
    Thanks,
    Bert

Green 5400 RPM drives do not work with video editing
My 3 hard drives are configured as...
    1 - 320Gig Boot for Win7 64bit Pro and all program installs
2 - 320Gig data for Win7 paging swap file and video project files
When I create a project on #2 drive, the various work files follow,
so my boot drive is not used for the media cache folder and files
3 - 1Terabyte data for all video files... input & output files (*)
(*) for 4 drives, drive 3 all source files & drive 4 all output files

  • Hard disk question

    Hello,
Please advise...Is it necessary and how does one defragment a Sata hdd in an iMac G5?
    Many thanks,
    Chris
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

Defragmentation is handled by Mac OS X 10.3 or newer for slow-growing files, and doesn't need to be done manually; more information is available in this article.

  • Mac Mini Not booting due to hard disk being full

    Hello All,
I have a Mini and has worked well for the past 12 months, last week i upgraded to the OSX Lion which also went very smoothly. However yesterday i had a message on my screen stating the my startup disk was full and i needed to make space. finding this a little odd as I have a TB external hard drive that everything goes to.
the mini frose during the deletion process after leaving for approx an hour i attempted to reboot. from this point i have only been able to access the disk utility through the DVD that came with the mini I have done a disk check and repair, also check permission all are ok exept for only having 49mb of hd space left.
I cant access safe mode as this will not boot either (tried to load for 8 hours) re install will also not work due to the amount of hd space available
has anyone got any ideas how i can clean the hard disk without formatting as ideally i would like to know what is causing the problem.
like a not very bright thing i left the time machine turned off so this isnt an option either??

Ok, basically it would involve the following
    Boot from the DVD
Launch the Terminal.app probably from a Utilities menu which also lists Disk Utility
In Terminal you would need to type cd /Users/accountname/.Trash followed by pressing the return key
Then you would type ls -l and again press return
It would then list what is in the trash for that user account. If it begins with a D it is a folder, otherwise it is likely a file. The big number before the data would give an idea of the size of the item.
When you have found the one you want to delete (remember you cannot undo this) you would type the following to delete a file rm filename and then press return again.
The do ls -l again to see if the file has gone.
If you want to delete a folder that is in the trash then the command would be rm -r foldername and then again press return. Using rm -r is a particularly dangerous command if you do it in the wrong place or the wrong way you could delete everything on the hard disk.
Normally in single user mode (which you said was not working) you have to type some other commands beforehand to allow modifying the contents of the hard disk. I have not tried this via the DVD so I do not know if the same applied. If it does it is likely to refuse to delete the file and you should come back to me and we can work out the process.

On your friend's computer with an internet connection, log into the Mac App Store with your ID and download Yosemite from the Purchases section of the Mac App Store. The make a bootable USB install media using
    http://liondiskmaker.com/
Then boot from that on your computer and install
You need an internet connection to install via Recovery mode

I'm using a macbook pro, running snow leopard. Yesterday I got around to emptying my trash for the first time in quite awhile and was surprised by how much there seemed to be in there. Immediately after a question mark symbol appeared on all my hard disk folders. If I click on these question marks I get a message saying ' the item can't be found'.

mpagan47 wrote: a question mark symbol appeared on all my hard disk folders.
Not sure where these hard disk folders are located that you are referring to?  Finder, Finder tool bar, Finder side bar, Desktop, Dock?
More then likely they are  an alias that not longer point to the orginals,  thus the question mark.
I would reboot.  Delete icons if an alias and just recreate by dragging from the source. Try right click (control) click to remove.

  • Recently upgraded Mac 24" to Lion (clean install) and now no external hard disks work with Time Machine

Recently upgraded Mac 24" to Lion (clean install) and now no external hard disks work with Time Machine.
installed new internal disk first with fresh 10.7.3 Lion software. Also upgrade ram to 4GB. Work great, super fast.
BUT.... my WD 1TB firewire400 external disks no longer work with the Lion enabled machine now.
FURTHER... I read somewhere that WD is problematic with Lion but Seagate was not... so I went and bought a new 3TB Seagate GoFlex.
When it didnt work properly either, I patiently searched and found a software/firward upgrade and applied.
    I re-partitioned disk to extened/journaled standard, etc.
Then assigned the particition to Time Machine. Drive turned the blue/grey color, so I thought it would work.
But, it has now been in "preparing" mode in Time Machine for HOURS....
What is up Apple? So dissappointed. Ive read these type of problems are notorious with Lion and I wish I never upgraded.
Are you trying to make issues with External disks, to drive people to iCloud?  That trick ont work in me. I will not reward bad behaviour Apple.
Please provide a fix... I wasted hours/days screwing around with this, instead of using the Mac for what its intended!

Solved by Pondini, on another thread I opened...
    Answer:
    Sounds like either:
A directory problem on your internal HD.  Verify your internal HD, and Repair any other volumes being backed-up per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Something in OSX may be damaged.  You've tried the "combo," so a fresh copy of OSX (that won't disturb anything else) would be worth a try (and you don't need a tech for that).  See Installing the ''combo'' update and/or Reinstalling OSX.

  • MacBook Pro hard disk upgrade shows question mark folder

I recently bought a 1TB hard disk for my teenaged daughter's MacBook Pro.
I formatted it, used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the existing drive. I even made sure to create the recovery partition.
I restarted while holding the option key and chose the new drive.  It booted fine so I checked in System Preferences to make sure it was selected as the boot device.
I opened the case and swapped the drives. Put it back together and restarted only to see the question mark folder!
I tried booting while holding the option key and now I get the choose a network prompt.
I am desperate and hate the thought of disappointing my daughter. It used to be that I was her hero who could fix anything now I'm the guy who asks too many questions and doesn't put enough money on her debit card. Granted she busts her butt getting awesome grades and I was upgrading her drive so she could continue her video yearbook for her school. So I shouldn't complain but it would be great to be her hero again.
BTW, I am not a newbie to the tech world but I don't do nearly as much in the Apple arena as I do in the PC world.  Then again I've been a senior tech in the industry sine before IBM had a PC.  In fact, my first real work was on a 6502 processor that used the same machine code as the Rage of the day, the Apple ][. All that to say I usually can find my way around a problem but this one has me stumped.
    I appreciate any assistance offered.
    Thanks,
    Thom

I tried to reboot with the option, command P. And R keys pressed.  I heard the ding several times it still showed the question mark!  I also tried the shift option and it only displayed the network selection. Also I tried to press C so I could boot from USB and it didn't work either.
If I cannot get this to work I fear my only other choice is to use a FireWire enclosure. This isn't a good option as my daughter does mostly movie work and iMovie has this terrible "feature" that forces all movies to be stored in one place. It sure would be handy if it allowed movie projects to set the storage location individually.  I suppose I could simply move all the movies to the drive and try to find a way to point all iMovie projects to the external drive.
Unfortunately,  my daughter is one of those Mac users who isn't savvy enough to use anything but the default settings. Heck I've tried to explain to her that she ought to get rid of the big files once she has done her work.  That's why her drive is always full.

  • Hard disk in mums macbook failed, bought a new one, formatted it first. Have tried starting it with every possible key and I either get flashing question mark folder or a cursor.

Hard disk in mums macbook failed, bought a new one, used sata adapter cable to format it for mac first. Connected it and have tried starting it with every possible key combination and I either get flashing question mark folder or a cursor. A disk is stuck in it so I can't boot from OSX, and yes I have tried every option of starting to try and eject disk but none work. HELP ME!

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
      1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
left mouse button until the disc ejects.
      2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
      3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
      4. Press COMMAND-E.
      5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in
your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
            /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.
If you have a 2010 MBP or later, then you can use Internet Recovery. Start by rebooting the computer. At the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION-R keys until a Globe appears in the upper part of the screen. This process can take upwards of 15 minutes to get connected to the Apple network servers. You should eventually see the utility screen of the Recovery HD. You may now go about the process to install Mountain Lion:
    Install Lion/Mountain Lion on a New HDD/SDD
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
