Clean up my Desktop .......

Hi all, i have read somewhere that my Desktop should ideally be clear of everything !, nobody likes clutter eh.
However, i have cleared my Desktop of everything except, what must be a shortcut to my Hard Drive showing a realistic picture/icon of a Hard Drive !.
I am unable to remove it, WHY ?. it wont Eject, i cant Move to Trash, i use Finder to view the contents of my hard drive, i don't really see what i want it for.
In fact i notice this hard drive "shortcut" doesn't even show up in Finder when viewing my Desktop folder !, very confusing !!

Try Finder > Preferences, then uncheck "Hard disks" in "Show these items on the desktop."
You can keep things on your desktop. I have a Misc folder on my desktop, and for things on the desktop I haven't used in a while, they go into that folder. And when I feel like it, I go through that and sort out what's in there. Best of both worlds.

Both work very well. The former I use for manual, one-way synchroniziation of (nearly) entire systems. The latter for automatic syncing of very active directories through local and shared online storage.

An applescript to clean a cluttered desktop!

An applescript that is able to move .apps into an app folder or .docs into a doc folder ect. I need something like this because my desktop is all ways a mess. If anyone can just start the script i will take it from there. Thank you in advance!

Maybe you would like to try the following script, which assumes that folders “My documents" and “My applications” both exist in your home folder:
set A to (path to home folder as text) & "My documents:"
set B to (path to home folder as text) & "My applications:"

How to use AppleScript to clean up desktop?

I am writing a script that will take all the image documents on my desktop and place them into a newly created folder on the desktop called "desktop images". It'll take all the .dmgs and put them in another folder, etc. Then the remaining icons should arrange themselves by name. Disks should be ejected and caches dumped. Then the trash should be emptied. After all this, a dialog displays "Mission Accomplished. Would you like to Shut down, Restart, or Continue."
I have nearly everything I need put together except for the blasted desktop clean up. Here's how I have it right now:
tell application "Finder"
clean up window of desktop by name
end tell
{Finder got an error: Can't get window of desktop.}

I guess the biggest reason is because I'm learning AppleScript. I want to know how to do everything in AppleScript. Then, I also plan on making an AppleScript App using X Code stuff that implements all of my cool scripts I put together.
Some of the ones I have so far are a finder refresher, a show hidden files, an app unfreeze, bring all windows to left of monitor 1, and a really huge one that uses gui scripting to help people set up their ip printers at my college.

I tried to use the record button but with no luck. Under OS 10.5, it just records every movement of the icons as "select window of desktop". And when I move the icons, it doesn't add to the script at all.

I tried selecting "Arrange By>Name" but it still doesn't record the action. The AS dictionary for the Finder says that it's possible; however, I can only get it to work in opened windows on the desktop using this script:

If there is no wat to do it with a traditional AS, if a shell script existed that could do it, I'd be happy to know it.

It sounds like your desktop profile is (still?) corrupt; it's failing to process the wipe on bookmarks. So let's be super thorough: we'll clean up the desktop, then reconnect so the Android device's data will replace it.
My suggestion is to do the following. Read all of the steps before you start. I recommend that your Android device is on wifi.
# On your Android device, go to Settings > Accounts & sync. Remove your Sync account. Your Firefox profile will be unchanged.
# On your desktop, create a new profile.
# On the new profile, assuming you want to re-use your Sync account, follow the instructions below.
# Re-pair your Android device with the new desktop profile, and wait for it to finish syncing before syncing the desktop.
Connecting to an existing sync account:
# Set Up Sync
# I have an account
# I don't have the device with me
# Enter username and password, choose "I have lost my other device"
# You'll get a dialog with a new recovery key. Choose "Change recovery key".

Possible to hide Time Machine HD icon from desktop?

Hey, I'm using Time Machine with a new iomega 500 GB desktop USB hard drive I installed a few days ago, and it seems to be working like a champ. Just wondering...is there any way to hide the new icon on my desktop called "Time Machine Backups"? (this is what Time Machine named the new hard drive) I changed my finder preferences to hide all external devices, so that's not the trick, apparently. And there doesn't seem to be an option in Time Machine prefs that I can find. Any tips? With Leopard, I've become accustomed to the nice, clean desktop, and now I can't seem to get rid of this one icon.

I asked the same question yesterday and was told that this is not possible. I would think it would be a pretty simple thing to add to the preferences pane for Time Machine. You should add it to the OS X feedback page.
My motivation wasn't to clean up the desktop so much as keep my wife from ejecting the disk on her iMac without me knowing and then weeks later ask me for a file only to find out it never got backed up. I taught her about Time Machine, but you never know...

BB Desktop Manager v4.7 error

I recently downloaded v4.7 for the desktop and was having issues so I removed it from my computer. I tried to reinstall but it won't let me. I am no longer getting the error code for the .msi file to be located, but I am now getting that "the wizard was interrupted before Blackberry Desktop Software could be completely installed. Your system at this time has not been modified. to complete installation at another time, please run setup again. Click finish to exit." Can anyone offer a suggestion on how to get everything completely uninstalled and then reinstall it with no problems? I know that it is still showing up in the Add/Remove program but won't allow it to be removed. Not sure what all I need to get removed. Also have BlackBerry Media Sync installed. Any help would be appreciated as this happened yesterday and I am still fighting with it to get it corrected.

Error message in desktop Manager: Media

I have downloaded Desktop Mgr, and when I try to access Media, I get this error message :
image File "file": C/program files (x86) common files\roxio shared\9.0\common resources/\shared\generic\images\about_RIM_Background.PNG" cannot be loaded
Can anyone help me figure out what this is & how do I fix it????

Do you have other Roxio or Sonic software installed on your PC? If so, its possible there is a conflict between these and the Roxio Media Manager. Which version of BlackBerry Desktop Manager do you have installed? Are you able to open Media Manager from C:\Program Files (x86)\Roxio\Media Manager 9 by clicking on MediaManager9.exe. If so, try opening Media Manager from the Desktop Manager after doing so. If this does not resolve the issue, try clean uninstalling the Desktop Manager as shown here. http://bbry.lv/acVRkU then reinstalling. You may also want to upgrade to the most recent version of the Desktop Software.

Ghost Icons on desktop after attempt to move them into a folder

I was trying to clean up my desktop so I highlighted a few files and tried dragging them into one folder. After this happened the icons that were highlighted remained on my desktop, completely grayed out with no way of clicking on it or moving it. when I checked the folder that was supposed to contain the files they were all there but the ghost icons remain on my desktop with no way of accessing them. Restarting will usually take care of the problem but I want to know if anyone can tell me why this is happening in the first place?

Processor 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR34
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
Software OS X 10.9.5 (13F34)

Got to your Desktop folder in the Finder sidebar, command i will open the info pane.
What are your permissions here? Unlock the pad lock and Change to read write.

Desktop Software crashes when clicking on "Configure Settings"

I am a Blackberry newbie having bought my first one yesterday: a Bold 9780.
I installed the Desktop Software that came with the CD on my notebook running Windows 7 Professional. When Desktop Software started up after installation, I immediately got an error message that said "Rim.Desktop.Autoupdate has stopped working" and it then tries to search for a solution which didn't work.
However, Desktop Software managed to open up nicely despite that problem. In the main window, I went through the setup procedure as prompted. But when I got to "Organizer" and click on "Configure Settings...", it will attempt to do so but will crash with a message saying "Black Berry Desktop Software has stopped working". I have tried it several times and had the same response.
I have spent close to 8 hours through the night reading through all the message and forums here and on other websites and have tried countless ideas: clean uninstall and reinstall, register DLL files, etc. but nothing works. I have even tried installing the previous version 5.0.1 which also has some issues with being unable to open device database or something like that.
Getting this desktop software working is very important as I need to import all my work contacts from Outlook 2007 to my new 9780.
I am really at my wits end and would appreciate any help.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I tried the steps mentioned at the sites you linked but none of them helped at all. Upon further searching, I found a KB article mentioning that the crashing issue has been escalated with no solution as yet. It recommended that DM 5.0.1 be used instead.
So I did a clean uninstall of Desktop Software 6, downloaded DM 5.0.1 and went through the setup as documented. Did a sync and encountered a new problem. I check through and found some articles that recommended I try to narrow down the problem. I managed to sync my "task" and "notes" list on Outlook 7 with the BB Bold 9780 with no issues. But when I tried to sync the "Calendar" and "Address Book", it failed. Opening the log file, I discovered this error:

Again I googled it and came up with nothing that worked. Stuff I tried:
1) Cleared the database using the "Advanced" function in "Backup and Restore" but that didn't help either.
2) Deleted the "IntelliSync" folder and re-configured the sync and tried it again. Nada.
3) Created a new empty profile on Outlook 2007 with no calendar or address book entries just in case there are some corrupted entries there, reconfigured DM 5.0.1 to sync from that and overwrite all data on my Bold 9780 and that didn't work either.
4) To be sure, I even tried to sync from Yahoo. And those DM did successfully log in, the same error as above pop up.
I would hazard a guess that DM 5.0.1 is not able to open the Bold 9870's database. Not sure why.
I think I should mention at this point that I am using Windows 7 Pro Edition and Outlook 2007. I am not using any enterprise nor any wireless sync. All I am trying to do is to get my address book and calendar entries onto that DARN Bold 9780 with the supplied cable.
I am thinking that maybe DM 5.0.1 may not be able to access the database on my Bold because it's running OS6.
Any ideas?

Why doesn't Spotlight reveal searched item if it is inside a Desktop folder

Scvenario:
I created a folder on Desktop called Test into which I placed two Word documents and one pdf document.
Then I went to Spotlight and had it search for these documents.
Spotlight listed every occurrence of these items EXCEPT their presence in the Desktop folder.
In seven years of Mac ownership, I never knew this.
So if I have several folders on the Desktop into which I have put a number of items, there appears no way to locate a specific item via Spotlight but only by opening each folder separately and looking into it.
Surely this can't be right.

I have some new information:
I created a folder on the Desktop called XXXXXXXX
Into this I dropped a Word document and gave it a name that is not present anywhere in the computer.
Then I went to Spotlight. It finds the document in Word but makes no mention of the XXXXXXXX file.
HOWEVER, when I click "Get Info", it shows the document to be in folder XXXXXXXX
I have a friend whom I am trying to get to clean up his Desktop on which resides perhaps sixty files/folders. I want him to put these items into a couple of folders. He maintains he will not be able to find the files. He knows very little about computers, and I am trying to make this as easy as possible.
But Spotlight will not pinpoint a file inside a Desktop folder unless we click Get Info.

Why can't I delete or open a PSD jpeg saved for Web from my desktop?

I was working with photoshop today and saved multiple versions of the same flyer I made to my desktop. One of the flyer versions I clicked "save for web" and it showed up as a jpeg on my desktop.
I cleaned up my desktop today and I can't put that version in a folder, delete or open it. When I right click "move to trash," I get this error message:
It literally will not move anywhere. I searched other forms and they said to click on the desktop (so nothing is highlighted like in the picture above) and click get info and then uncheck the locked box. Nothing is checked, so....?

My desktop icons are not displaying properly

After powering up my MacBook Pro, some of my desktop icons show as archives instead of an actual pic of the icon. I have restarted and that does not change the icons.

Thanks abwhite57 for the suggestion. I was able to fix the problem before seeing your reply.
As I went thru the process of cleaning up the desktop icons, I noticed that moving one to the trash or to the finder would change the thumnail view back to it's proper appearance. So an icon would go from one that said "archive" back to thumnail view of it's webpage. So I then dragged the icon back onto the desktop. Problem solved.

BB Desktop will not display properly in Windows 7

I installed BB Desktop 7 on my Windows 7 64bit machine. It runs but the display is either all white or all black. How can I get desktop to display correctly?
