Clean up path

Hello
I am learning Illustrator CS4, and I tried out the clean up path facility.
I deliberately left a few random  anchor points on the page, to see if they would get cleaned up.
But when I clicked OK, to clean up path, I got a message saying No clean up neccessary, - and the extra anchor points were not cleaned up.
Can anyone tell me what I need to do if I want my work actually cleaned up.
Thanks for any advice.

Thanks for your response Steve.
I checked the box for stray points, and tried checking/unchecking every combination of the boxes for unpainted objects, empty text paths, stray points - but i just get the message that no clean up was neccessary. the extra anchor points etc are still there.
Regards.

  • How to make a clean spiral path in cs5

I have Photoshop CS5 Extended at work and am lucky to have it. (no hope of getting CS6 or any other Adobe products at the moment).  Is there a technique or script to make a clean spiral (with a path--so I can apply a brush stroke) in CS5 WITHOUT using the shape tool spiral preset?  I have learned one technique but it involves many steps and it is difficult to manage the correct size to the ratio of the curve of the spiral and it is not a path.  Any direction would be appreciated.

Good links to those automators, Linc
As to why this is so difficult on OSX (as Cinthy asks), I've often wondered the same, and wondered why this seemingly simple feature hasn't been included on release after release of OSX. Well, I decided to stop expecting Apple to do something, and ponder their thought process, instead. I believe Apple doesn't like (hates) its users seeing a file path. They don't even want users thinking of the idea of a file system at all. This is the design philosophy of a company that's focused on consumer products-- and if the merging of OSX and iOS is any indication (Yosemite moves closer to this than any release so far, and reveals Apples future intentions), then I wouldn't expect to ever see this feature in any future release of OSX either. iOS and consumer devices are dictating the future of OSX, and unless we're willing to get geeky with automator solutions and such, this distinction (out-of-the-box, at least), will keep Windows dominating work environments, and OSX dominating consumer environments (at least such is Apple's goal and focus). Just my 2c..

  • How do I see the full path in Yosemite's spotlight?

How do I see the full path in Yosemite's spotlight? (cmd shows only partial path)
Seeing the full path would make work much easier finding my articles which I have put in distinct catalogues.

    CazooMAC,
Holding ( Command ) to show the path of a file that is displayed at the bottom of the preview pane in Spotlight is the only way to display the path in the Spotlight app its self.
If you hold ( Command ) and double click the item you are looking to get a path of it will open that items containing folder in Finder. From there you can get the full path using a bunch of different methods. An Example would be using Finders Get Info option. The Keyboard shortcut is ( Command ) ( I ).
There is another thread that covers the topic of getting a clean path in Finder. Or basically a path that one doesn't have to type out manually, without those little arrows in between folders. It can be found here: How to get a clean file path in OS X Yosemite?
My Suggestion to get a clean path there is as follows:
Another way you can get the path, and yes I'm aware its cumbersome, is you can open the "Go to Folder" window and drag your folder or file into it and it will give you the path. Free of modifiers and without opening another application.
I find it works best if when you start there is no Finder windows open. If you leave one open you just have to open another one as it doesn't let you drag and drop from the one with the "Go to Folder" window in it.
Finder has to be Active > Select Go ( Menubar ) > Go to Folder...
    Or you can use the keyboard shortcut ( Command ) ( Shift ) ( G )
At this point I like to clear out the address field as if there is anything in there it will stay.
Next Open a new Finder window.
Examples on how to: Select File > New Window, or the keyboard shortcut ( Command ) ( N )
Find the File or Folder your interested in then drag and drop it in the Address Field of the "Go to Folder" window and it will give you the path.
If you would like to send Apple feedback about this you can do so here: https://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
    Hope that helps,
    Weston

  • How do I change vista business 32 bit to windows 7 64 bit on a w700

I bought a full install 64bit windows 7 but the w700 wont boot off the dvd -- says there is no valid boot on the disk
the 32 bit dvd boots fine, obviously there is something missing in the prom. how to I get whatever is necessary to boot off the 64bit windows software.
As you all should know, the w700 doesn't support 32 bit windows 7 so I would hope lenovo will us poor suckers a break and tell us how to convert to the 64bit version
    Jeffrey R Fischman, MD

Microsoft does not provide any clean upgrade path from a 32-bit operating system to a 64-bit version.  Basically, you will have to do a clean install.  You can simplify the migration process by using System Migration Assistant at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-50889.
With regards to the boot problem, I have found that certain discs and/or certain optical drives will take longer to initialize which can cause them to be skipped during the boot sequence.  To work around this, press F12 during the ThinkPad splash screen until you see "Prepaing Boot Device List"   When the boot menu comes up, select the optical drive and hit enter.  Sometimes you may need to wait a few seconds before hitting enter in order to allow the optical drive to fully initialize.  After hitting enter, the disc's boot loader will start and you'll see "press any key to boot to CD / DVD..."
If that doesn't work, try booting the media on another computer; it's possible the disc is defective (or has some dust on it.

  • Email becomes unreadible after going through Cisco email gateway

    Hi all,
I have an issue with one sender who is trying to email password protected attachments to other staff in our organization.
The issue seems to only occur when the email goes through our C370, if he sends to an externally hosted email account the email and attachment can be opened, and when that email is then sent as an attachment back into our organization it is also openable, which seems to rule out our clients.
Sanitized header from the C370 below is part of the message header which I think might contain the problem, I have removed the first part with to & from as I didn't know if it was relevant..

  • Does illustrator cs4 draw in vector?

Hello I am looking to buy what adobe program I need, I was told adobe illustrator is a vector drawing program. Ok so my question is does that mean it is only capable of converting to vector or does that mean that if i start a new document (ANY TYPE OF DOCUMENT) and create a design will the design be in vector format?
Reason I am asking, I am currently the owner of a small sign, banner and decal business and I am running FlexiSign for my Cutting Machine. For My banners I subcontract the jobs to a bigger outfit who has proper machines to print. They need all designs to be in vector, .pdf format. So instead of having to convert everything all the time I want a program that can make the design and it is already in vector, than if i need to import a raster image I understand that I will than need to convert to vector and that is fine, but for the backround and font and whatever else I put in the design does illustrator draw in vector, like my flexi sign does, because if I create a job in flexi sign and send it to him it is already in vector, I would rather be using a adobe product...........PLEASE HELPPPPP

    Matthew,
Illustrator is primarily a vector drawing program.
That does not mean that everything in a given Illustrator document is all vector artwork. An Illustrator document can contain vector paths, text objects, and raster images. It contains features that perform rasterization on-the-fly in order to apply effects to vector paths.
Nor does something being "vector" necessarily mean it is suitable for vinyl cutting. For example, you can apply gradients and blends to paths, and everything is "vector"; but you would not be able to render it on a vinyl cutter. For an even more basic example, you can apply strokes of any weight (thickness) to a vector path; but that by itself does not make it suitable for cutting--if you sent it to a cutter, you would just get a single cut along the center of the path.
So yes, you can use Illustrator to draw the kinds of paths that you need for your vinyl cutter. Many people do. (Corel Draw is more popuplar among sign shops.) But you need to know what you're doing; which features to use, which to avoid, and how to properly optimize the vector paths for cutting (removing overlaps, merging cross-cuts, outlining strokes, etc.)
You'll most likely need to back-save the properly-prepared artwork to an earlier version. Most vinyl cutting software can import .ai format, but not usually the current version.
Your designer is working against you by building artwork in Photoshop, if that artwork is intended for
cutting. For vinyl cutting, the artwork should be drawn as clean vector paths.
Except for certain "special cases", autotracing raster images should not be used for vinyl cutting. And in those cases, you need to fully understand what you are doing. Give up on the misconceived idea that you can just create any artwork you want, willy-nilly in Photoshop, and then use autotracing to magically "convert" it to vector artwork. That is a myth. Usually, you'll just be substituting one kind of jaggedness for another. (I've seen many sign shops do this, thinking the resulting roughness is "normal", and turn out garbage.)
You say you contract out your "banner" work to an outfit that has a large-format
printer. Yet you say that outfit insists on everything being vector. That is rather contradictory. You need all vector paths for
cutting. But any decent large format
printer can print artwork consisting of vector paths, raster images, or a combination of both.

  • Brush strokes very slow to render in PS 2014

Running CC PS 2014 on a MacPro 3.7 GHz with 32Gb RAM
Large brush strokes take many seconds, sometimes tens of seconds, to render.
I bought the MacPro with lots of RAM thinking the problem would be solved.
I've fiddle with the GPU setting with no joy. I set the system on the MacPro via Migration Assistant from my 17" MBPro. The MBPro suffered the same problem despite 16Gb RAM.
The MBPro system was migrated from a 2010 MacPro where I originally encountered the issue.
My feeling is that somehow the issue has originated on the 2010 MacPro and has embedded itself on the current systems by using the Migration Assistant.
The issue is consistent with or without using a Wacom tablet and is obviously exaggerated depending on file size.
My files are consistently minimum 90mb and often go to 1Gb+.
    Appreciate any help.

Two things I would try doing.
Backup to another drive with SuperDuper.
Boot off the clone, see how it runs.
Repair the internal drive with DU and follow up with Disk Warrior.
Fixed things for me when I was getting ready for 10.5.2, but in the end, and because DW 4.1 wasn't yet available to upgrade, did a fresh install when 10.5.2 was available and things have been fine.
Leopard Cache Cleaner or Path Finder 4.8 can both I think delete all those ".DS_" files which might help.
Use to be a phrase "Finder Amnesia" where it was not or was slow to do things like show new files in Finder; not showing folder sizes even when selected (command option I could 'wake it up' somewhat).
Finder is suppose to have been "improved" but it is a huge pile of code.
The only way I find Finder and system to really feel responsive - for me - is to boot from a fast dedicated boot drive, and to have /User/account on another drive or better yet, on a stripped RAID. Not an option for most, and I don't think that should even be necessary but I liked 15K drives and RAID before and addicted to speed I guess.
Outside of faster drives and more memory, not much you can do, but the above cloning (and restore back) does seem to work and worth doing - I do it once or twice a year at least, generally when there is a .x update to OS X.
I would be more inclined to suspect corrupt caches, directory, prefs, DS_Store files.

  • Macbook CD drive struggles to eject?

My macbook's cd drive is struggling to eject any type of disk.
The drive will attempt to eject and then just load the disk again.
Sometimes it ejects but I have to hold down constantly on the eject button and even then it is not smooth and only comes out enough for me to grab the disk real quick to pull it out.
I've tried all the tips on this support page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2801 to no avail.
My computer is also under the protection plan so I had the drive replaced for free however there are no changes in the problems.
So even with a brand new drive the problem is not fixed! What could be the other causes of this lack of power/force to my drive. Any info would be great.

    Hi ams5406,
Replacing a hard drive in a computer will not assist in resolving, or identifying an optical drive issue. They're two different hardware components that operate independently from one another. Now with that being said, if the optical drive is unable to eject a disc (through the normal process) it's possible that there's a problem with the optical drive. Does it look like, perhaps, that it's getting stuck on something or has excessive force being applied to the top of it?
Reason I ask, it's possible that the bezel area (on the bottom case) is not allowing for a clean exit path for the disc. My recommendation (as there's little else to do) is to get the machine back to a service center / retail store and get a second set of eyes on what's happening when the disc is ejected.

  • Superdrive not recognising DVD

It seems I'm in a similar boat as several others in this forum. Have an eMac OSX10.3.9 with superdrive and have been burning and playing movies with no problems. In the last couple of months it will not recognise ANY DVD at all - including DVDs I have created myself and commercial movies that I have been able to previously read.
I have no probs reading CDs.
In every case after inserting a DVD it comes up with a message "You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OSX can read."
I have gone through the forum and taken up suggestions including:
    updating firmware: software indicated no update required;
    resetting NVRAM;
    using CD lens cleaner
using Path Burn – software indicated no patch required
I've noticed there's been several postings over the last couple of months regarding this or similar probs with DVD. Is it anything to do with recent upgrades? Hope this inspires further troubleshooting - I'm pulling my hair out! Or have I missed the posting with the magical solution?
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   800MHz, 78mb SDRAM, Superdrive

    Hi Paula
Apparently different wavelengths are used to read DVDs and CDs. I found a lot of stuff out by reading other postings on this site, plus some extra bits from the response to this posting.
Meantime, I upgraded to 10.4.8 to no avail. Then a friend recommended booting in Safe Mode and lo and behold, the offending DVDs were read. Unfortunately, because this mode uses limited extensions, it wouldn't actually play those that were movies, but at least I could get some data from some. The DVDs also played when I booted in OS9.
They also recommended creating a new user in OSX, which I did but had the same problem. Which tends to make me believe there is some offending extension, rather than a cleaning issue - a bit of a nightmare to sort out!
May just opt for a new drive - reluctantly.
    Cheers
    Mrs Dynamic

  • Can't install JDK 5.0 on Windows

I'm trying to install Java 5.0 on my Windows NT Workstation 4.0 box, but I can't get the installer to work. If I try the combined Netbeans 4.0 beta 2 and JDK 5.0 installer, it installs Netbeans fine, but then stops and complains that there "may have been an error installing" JDK 5.0 and tells me to look in install.log. Unfortunately, it hasn't created an install.log file.
If I try the separate Windows Offline installer for JDK 5.0, I get the splash screen and the harddisk rattles a while, but then I get a dialog asking me where it can find the "Java 2 SDK, SE v1.5.0.msi" file. I can't find that file anywhere so I have no choice but to click Cancel.
What's going on? Is there some installer-less version of the JDK somewhere which I can use? Can I cause the installer to run correctly?

I had a similar experience with both the JRE 5.0 and JDK 5.0 installations on my machine with Windows XP service pack 2. The installations would start coping files and installing. Near the end of the installation, the installation would just freeze. I brought up Windows Task Manager and noticed a java process was running and not taking up any CPU time. I tried but could not kill this java process. I tried to shutdown down my computer, but in the end I had hit the off button my case.
I uninstalled the JDK and tried again. Once again the installation freezed right when it started a java processes. From the command line I then tried java -version. Nothing happened and the command would not return. I brought up another command window and tried again. Same result. Now I had three java processes in the Windows Task Manager. I tried to "end process" all three java processes, but they would just remain the Windows Task Manger. All three could not be killed. Once again I had to turn my computer off (Shutdown didn't work again, it would just freeze).
After rebooting I was able to run java -version and get "1.5.0". It seems that whatever the installation did before starting the java process was enough for me to use java 5. What does the installation spawned java processes do?
I tried several things to get the installation to run all the way through. I cleaned my PATH and other environment variables, I tried stopping all unnecessary processes and services. Everytime I ran the installation I got the same results.
Here are the steps I had to take on my computer to install j2sdk 5.
    1. Install JDK 5.0.
    2. Watch for java process in Windows Task Manager.
    3. Turn off and then turn on the computer.
    4. Install JRE 5.0
    5. Watch for java process in Windows Task Manager.
    6. Turn off and then turn on the computer.

  • Wrong E-mail Reply Address

We have a wierd situation going on here. Running Server OS X 10.3.9.
A company that we work with has one user who's mail gives us problems. When we open mail he sends us on our end (using Mail in Jaguar, Panther, and Tiger) the reply address is reported as being from our own server. (He is not a user on our system.) However, when he sends mail to my Yahoo account, the correct reply address is listed. He is also the only of many users at his company that gives us a problem. So, I feel as though this must be an issue with our mail server.

  • Using the pen tool, how best should I build or construct this image?

    Hello,
I'm trying to recreate a certain image with the pen tool.
I have already tried using Live Trace using the "Simple Trace" setting. Live Trace did a pretty good job but not with enough accuracy or fidelity to the original image as I would like.
I am pretty rusty with Illustrator now, but I remember from past lessons that the basic idea is that artwork in Illustrator is divided into layers, objects, and elements within objects. But one of the biggest principles with Ilustrator is the order these layers, objects, and elements are stacked. Elements are stacked to create an object. Objects are often stacked, each object on its own layer, to create the entire piece of artwork.
Also, the lower an element, object, or layer is in a stacking order, the further towards the back it appears in the image.
Also, the higher an element, object, or layer is in a stacking order, the closer to the front it appears in the image.
So, in Illustrator, you don't so much draw or paint a piece of artwork, but, instead, creating artwork in Illustrator is more a matter of building it or constructing it.
So, with all that said, below I have an object I would like to create with the pen tool. It is a fleuron. It is at least fairly complex.I am not sure how to build it or construct its parts. What would come first, second, third? What would be on the bottom layer, middle layer, top layer, etc.?
I know there is no one way to reproduce this object with the pen tool. Whatever way you would use or would like to share is fine. I guess, more specifically, I'm not afraid of rigor and working hard, but I'm also not necessarily looking for rigor. Instead, what I am looking to do is work smartly and efficiently. I'm looking for what might commonly be considered "best practice."
So, how would you advise I approach the object below? How should I build or construct it?
    Thanks!  : )

As for the simple graphic itself, this is what I would end up with:
    One Group containing:
One red-filled, unstroked Compound Path consisting of three subpaths.
One white-filled, unstroked Compound Path consisting of 18 subpaths.
The reason I would compound the red paths and the white paths is simply so I could apply to them different fills with one move, should I want to.
The reason the two Compund Paths would be grouped is simply so the whole graphic can, when finished, be moved, rotated, scaled, flipped, skewed (i.e.; transformed) as if it were a single object. (Which it would be; a Group is a logical object, just as a "set" is a logical object.)
As for how I would actaully draw the graphic:
First I would roughly evaluate it to get an idea of what I want to end up with in terms of clean, tidy, paths (as already describe above.)
Second, I mentally devise a "plan of attack" by which to achieve that; just studying the shapes a little more deeply for anything that can be exploited to minimize the work:
Are there any repetitive elements of the shape that can be accomplished by duplication, moving, scaling?
Is there any symmetry that can be accomplished by duplication and flopping?
Is there any simple geometry that can be accomplished with basic shape prmitives (whole or partial ellipses, rectangles, polygons)?
Third, I always try to also consider whether the process of drawing the current graphic and/or portions of it might be of future use to me, and if so, can I exploit other software features to save me time and effort later. For example, consider a single one of the ess-shaped "coils" of the middle tapered "spiral" grouped together with its white highlight. Such a graphic, colored in black and white and stored as an ArtBrush with its Colorization set to Hues & Tints would let me stretch and scale that basic shape along other-shaped paths. Similarly stored as a PatternBrush, it might do multi-duty for many things suggestive of coils, like rope or jewelry chains.
Then I just start drawing the necessary paths, using my default Graphic Style (.25 black stroke, no fill). As I proceed, I store (as Brushes, Symbols, etc.) any intermediate things that I think I might find useful later. For the graphic at hand, I then optimize the paths I've drawn by combining them (cutting, joining, path operations) into the fewest, cleanest, and simplest paths necessary to define the shapes. I then store the finished graphic as a Symbol, Brush, etc. if I think it might be of use later.
    Regarding Layers, Groups, etc., etc:
It sounds like you (like many beginning AI users) are way over-thinking the matter of stacking order. Yes, it's good to use some sensible amount of organization as your illustrations and designs become more elaborate, but you don't have to fret so much over it. The principles are very very simply.
Layer really don't even enter into my mind when creating such a graphic, because the paths of which it consists are all going to be grouped, and all the contents of a Group have to exist on the same Layer anyway. Multiple Layers would only come into play when this whole graphic is used as one element in the overall page layout. For example, suppose several instances of this object will exist on a page layout to serve as dividers between ads or stories arranged in columns in a page layout. I may choose--if it makes organizational sense to me--to put all the copies of this object on a Layer dedicated to them. The Layer on which they reside may or may not include other graphics; it's just a question of what makes organizational sense and editing convenience to me while I'm working the file. For example, having the copies of this graphic on a separate Layer would allow me to lock that Layer to avoid accidently selecting the graphics when I'm editing text objects that I've organized on another Layer.
Don't think of Layers as some oppressive "right or wrong" thing that you have to decide upon at the start of every little thing you draw. It's nothing but an organizational convenience that is driven almost entirely by common sense. The mechanics of it are really very very simple in principle.
Look: Everything you create or import in an Illustrator document is an object. Just like sheets of paper in a tablet, each of those objects (each path, text object, raster image) is going to reside somewhere in the z-order (think front to back) of the document's object stack. You can't do anything to prevent that. It's the way the program works. The file is basically just a list of things that the output device has to draw. Being a list, it has a first object, a second object, and so on. Objects higher in that list are nearer the "front"; objects lower are nearer the "back." Normally, objects in front obscure objects behind them, wherever they "overlap."
Now, considering that what you have is just a list of objects, as that list grows and grows, doesn't it eventually just make sense to be able to "bracket" or "label" contiguous portions (contiguous is key here) of that list for organizational and manipulative purposes? That's all Groups and Layers are; brackets around sections of the list.
Consider that an Illustrator file (like most computer files you create) is really just a text file. So suppose you have written a technical manual in a word processing program. Would you write that manual as one big, honkin' text string, or would you "bunch together" contiguous portions of the story under some labeling scheme of subheads? After that, wouldn't you similarly "bunch together" contiguous subhead sections as chapters?
So you can think of Groups as "subheads," and Layers as "chapters" in your Illustrator document's list of objects.
Sure; if you're working on a page layout document, sometimes it makes sense to go ahead and set up some of this structure at the start (just as when writing a book, it makes sense to start with an outline). So you might go ahead and define a Layer for printer marks, another for the diecut, another for text, another for images, another for background fills.
The very next designer might decide to structure the very same project a little differently. He might, for example, decide there's no reason not to keep the text objects on the same layer with the raster images. There's no hard & fast right & wrong her. You do what makes sense for the project at hand.
Now in this context, back to your simple graphic: I don't need a PrinterMarks Layer, a DieCut Layer, or a TextObjects Layer to draw this graphic. I just need the default Layer 1. For convenience, I may want to add a TraceThisStuff Layer onto which I put the original raster image, just so I can conveniently isolate it (lock it, dim it, etc.) while drawing the paths on Layer 1. On the other hand, I can really just as easily leave the raster image that I want to trace on Layer 1 and reduce its opacity and lock/unlock it at the object level. It's up to me.
But for that matter, revisit my "third level" of evaluation described above. In reality, I would very likely not even start drawing this graphic in the document for which it is intended. I would just as likely open an existing JET_Dingbats.ai or a JET_Ornaments.ai or CustomerName_StyleGraphics.ai file or template, draw the graphic there and when done, just copy it and paste it into the current document file. That's how you, over time, build yourself a reasonably organized "personal library" of re-usable resources that save you countless hours of repetitive work in the future.

  • How to create simple 3D illustrations?

    Hello!
Please, take a look at this image:
I am looking for a way to create these simple kinds of 3D illustrations. I use Illustrator myself in my daily work, but almost never for 3D (probably because I almost never create any 3D material).
My question is really about whether Illustrator is a good tool for creating these kinds of illustrations, or if anyone in here could direct me to a software program that is really good at this particular graphic?
    Thank you!

To "project" anything drawn in-the-flat onto the top plane of an isometric cube:
    1. Rotate the artwork 45°
    2. Scale to 100% horizontal, 57.74% vertical ( because .5774 is the sine of the isometric angle, 35°16'').
So in your diagram, you can save yourself some time by drawing the whole thing in the flat (all the base circles and the connector lines), selecting it all, and performing the two steps.
With circles, the advantage of first rotating to 45° is that the anchorPoints of the resulting isometric ellipses will be oriented on the isometric axes, providing snap-to locations for alignment to other isometric edges. Alternatively, apply Object>Path>Add Anchor Points to the circle either before or after the vertical scale. That will add anchorPoints at the middle of each segment, and after scaling vertically, you'll have anchorPoints at the major diameter, minor diameter, and isometric diameters.
If you then want to use true proportion for the height of the cylinders, move copies of the isometric ellipses vertically a distance of true measure multiplied by .8165—cosine of the isometric angle—(or scaled to 81.65% vertically).
Example: Assume you want a properly-proportioned cylinder of diameter 1.25" and length .375".
    1. Draw a 1.25" circle.
    2. Scale it vertically 57.74%.
    3. DoubleClick the black pointer tool. In the move dialog, key your true-length measure (.375), followed by a multiplication symbol (*), followed by .8165. Then cllick the Copy button.
    4. White pointer: Select the bottom anchorPoint of both ellipses. Copy. Paste In Front.
    5. Press Ctrl and tap J twice (shortcut for Join). That gives you the side of the cylinder, to which you can now apply a horizontal linear grad.
So you could draw that whole diagram in a matter of minutes and end up with properly-proportioned heights (if it matters), and end up with clean & tidy path constructions to which you can apply ordinary linear grads, instead of having the possibly hundreds of paths which 3D Effect will ultimately produce.
On the other hand, you could also simply go ahead and use 3D Effect in its Isometric Top preset orientation, for each of the differently-shaped objects. Then store them as Symbols. Then stack and arrange Instances of the Symbols to construct the diagram.
Example: Assume you want to draw the object that is labeled Supplier in your screenshot in numerical diameter-to-height proportion, with diameter 1" and height .5".
    1. Draw the green, blue, and orange objects in the flat. (Radial Grid tool would be handy for this.) Give them solid fills, no strokes. Group them.
    2. Proportionally scale the set of circular shapes to 72 pts (which is 1").
    2. Effect>3D>Extrude & Bevel. Select Isometric Top from the popup menu. Set the Extrude Depth to 36 pts (which is .5").
    3. Drag the result to the Symbols palette.
    4. Arrange as many instances of the Symbol as needed in the diagram.
In other words, as long as you measure dimensions of the base paths in points, the Extrude Depth setting in 3D Extrude & Bevel is proportional.

  • How do I improve Repousse quality?

I'm having difficulty using the repousse technique to create 3D text.  When I do it, it results in aweful jagged lettering.  Is there a setting to fix this?  I'm new to PhotoShop, I work primarily on Premiere Pro and After Effects.
    Thanks

Aside from what Zeno said about the rendering quality settings, consider how you create the actual geometry. The size at which the text is created in relation to the document DPI strangely enough matters and affects the tesselation pattern produced, meaning how smooth the curves are divcided into triangles. Making text a bit bigger often helps, but going too big does not yield any extra benefits. Because of that, also the typeface selectiion matters. Sometimes you will even find that because the font is poorly designed you will get weird geometry. In that case basing the extrusion on a selection from the text or converting it to paths and cleaning those paths up a little might work better...
