Clean up speed changes in a zoom/track

Hi again,
I am just cleaning up some final issues on my edit and there is one tracking shot that has some slight speed change (bit jumpy) in it. I was wondering if I can smooth the speed with a filter or by using keyframe editor in motion?
I am pretty new to Motion, so please forgive me.
Many Thanks

Does it have to do with this?

If all you want to do is smooth out bad camera work, use the Smooth Behavior in Motion. Make sure you have Optical Flow selected.
Have fun

  • Magic trackpad tracking speed changes

My Magic trackpads tracking speed changes to slow when I log off. I have to reset it when I log on.
How do I set the tracking speed to stay put?

If you use MagicPrefs, some people believe that causes the Magic Trackpad to default back to slowest tracking speed on restart/relog. Have a look at the Magic Prefs preferences pane for the Trackpad and see if you can change the default tracking speed in that instead of the System Preferences pane.
If you don't use MagicPrefs, there is a fix using Terminal for the same problem with the Magic Mouse, and it may work for the trackpad too. I'm adapting this from Tyler Nicols' post on his blog.
    Open a Terminal Window
Enter the following command to see what your current setting is:
             defaults read -g com.apple.trackpad.scaling
This will return a numeric value. To speed up (or slow down) your mouse tracking, you can simply change this number accordingly by typing the following command, replacing the “your_trackpad_speed” with a new number such as 5.0. Notice that read has been changed to write:
            defaults write -g com.apple.trackpad.scaling your_trackpad_speed
    So, for example:
            defaults write -g com.apple.trackpad.scaling  5.0
You may need to restart your mac to see the changes take effect.
Let me know if it works for you.

  • Slow motion and speed changes blurry jittery - SOLUTION!

I Have had a few issues with slo mo and sped up stuff going blurry or jittery on me.
This is from HD from a HC3 down converted (camera does this) to SD anamorphic (pal).
I think i have found the solution - and welcome any exra content from more experienced heads than mine.
Of course there are limitations to how far you can slo mo before you get the jitters - anyway- here is my hot tip!
Change your speed (fit to fill , or modify speed) of the clip in the canvas (leaners - watch your sound timing - it can be thrown off if you have locked off ausio tracks) open up your clip from the canvas by double cliking it, tap the motion tab, cross the motion blur box - adjust the sample setting from 4 to 32 (i dont know exactly what this does but this is the key!, drop motion blur down to 0 %.
RENDER! voila! This has quickly resulted in some speed changed clips that hold their form rather nicely (no blurring or strobing , jitters etc - that have plagued me in the past - i'm doing lots of sport stuff where speed changes are common)
Hope this helps other relative newbs out there! And if anyone would care to comment on why this works i would be all ears!

I know what you mean, I end up with an extra frame if I set an in and out point then insert/overwrite replace or superimpose.
I find the quickest work flow is to
    0. mark the in point at start of clip
    1. copy the clip, command c
    2. go to the end of the sequence, end
    3. paste clip
    4. change speed, look at duration of clip, change speed %, command j
    5. change duration back to original duration,
    6. cut clip from end of time line,
    7. return to in point and paste clip.
I find this does give me control over the clip, does not affect the timeline and is frame accurate.
I agree you should be able to change the clip speed without affecting the duration.
    The alternative is as Andy described, fit to fill, here is an alternitive way of doing/describing this process;
adjust the out point of the clip to the new point you want,
move the clip out of the space on the timeline where you want the clip with the speed change to go,
place the CTI in the space where you want the new clip to go,
double click on the clip you want to adjust, opening it in the viewer,
drag the clip from the viewer to the canvas and the fit to fill option will appear along with all of the other options,
this will also do what you want, I believe there is no one click solution.
Someone please prove me wrong! I would love to be able to "command j" in to the speed dialog box, click on a check box that says keep duration or in/out points and simply change the duration.

  • Real time speed change mixing

Wondering if a way exists for me to make on the fly speed changes in real time while doing a voice over. Would like to just play a clip while recording my voice over and be able to freeze the clip while I continue to talk, then hit another key to start the clip moving at regular speed again all while I continue to talk. I don't even necessarily have to do the voice recording using FC. Just would like a way to do this which is a lot like real time audio mixing, but with speed changes. thanks.

The VO tool in FCP requires real-time sync to the playhead, so that won't work that way.
SnapZ allows you to record an image of the desktop, system audio (FCP playback), and the Mac's built-in input all to separate tracks of a QT file. I have used this for software instruction videos. There is a quirkiy issue with snapZ and frame rates. I posted a good workflow to address this a few months back. You would only need to do this if you were going to use the video recorded with SnapZ.
    Hope this helps - -

  • Compressor encoded speed change clip with echo as motorboat sound

Took me two days to troubleshoot, through trial and error and process of elimination, why Compressor encoded an audio clip that had been speed changed and echo applied to it -- as rapid MOTORBOAT sound! Project is a 5.1 mix. Since STP3 won’t accept speed change clips, after I completed mix in STP I placed speed changed clips on FCP timeline below the exported STP 5.1 mix with the FCP audio tracks for that clip assigned to channels 1 & 2 for the fronts and channels 5 & 6 for the rears. The clip on 5 & 6 was duplicated and identical in every way to the clip on channels 1 & 2. Only the dupe clip on 5 & 6 did Compressor encode as motorboat. The identical clip on 1 & 2 encoded correctly. Both clips were set to play at same time since I wanted the effect to be on fronts and rears simultaneously. I could not get the motorboat sound to play back from either FCP timeline or Compressor preview window. Only after encode and burn to DVD did it show up. Why would Compressor introduce such artifacts on one of the clips and not both – if it’s going to do it at all – which it shouldn’t? Any ideas? I have other such effects throughout the project where I duped a speed changed clip with an effect applied to it and set it to play on fronts and rears simultaneously and Compressor encoded those correctly.

Well, it's a little late, but this is one of the reasons to have your startup drive cloned so you can restore it to a working state if an update, upgrade or install sends things south.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2494
Have you tried resetting your fcp preferences
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2491
If this doesn't fix the problem, you could try sending the shot to motion.  You could aslo try changing the speed in the motion tab of the viewer.

  • Pasting Speed Change attribute to multiple clips

Since the FCP7 upgrade, I can no-longer paste speed changeattribute onto multiple-selected clips and have them ripple accordingly downthe timeline. I often have to match my video track time to the audio track timeand normally do the math to find what percentage the clips have to belengthened, change the speed on the opening clip, copy that clip, select theremaining clips, and paste the speed attribute to the selected clips. Before 7,they would change speed as well as length, now pasting the speed attribute onlychanges the speed and not the length of the selected clips, even when 'Ripple'is checked...
it's a serious time killer to have to do them one at a time...
This issues has been posted by atleast 2 other posters and hasnot received any replys.  Pleasehelp us.
    thanks

Sorry KV, I don't think you can do that anymore. Most folks really didn't like the old speed handling functionality pre FCP 7 and were seriously pleased when it was reinvented ... unfortunately "you can't please all the people all the time". Why not just nest the video track and then apply a single speed change to the whole nest?

  • Pitch compensation for audio speed change?

Is there a formulaic way to compensate for the pitch change after a speed change on audio?
    - control-click on an audio track
    - select "Speed..."
    - change the speed (for example 130%)
    - now, notice the speed has changed, but the pitch is now higher
    - there is an audio filter for this: AUPitch
    - BUT: how do I figure out what the value for the "pitch" setting should be to get it back to roughly the pitch it was before I changed the speed?
(From trial and error it looks like it's around -400 for a 130% change)

    hello monkeywidget,
if memory serves, the audio pitch works in cents so 100 cents = 1 semitone; 1200 cents = 1 octave; 200% speed = double speed = 1 octave up so -1200 in the pitch shift would compensate.
you'll have to experiment from there, but that'll put you in the right direction.
by the way, the audio filters in FCP are crap (since apple doesn't do good audio software? ... ) so i'd only use the internal filters as temp.

  • Clip speed change.

    Hi,
ive got a short sequence of clips ive put together and i want to slow down a couple of clips in the middle of the sequence.
The problem is, when i change the speed of the clip (it is on the top layer and no clips are in the same layer in front of it), the other clips that are on the bottom layers move forward, this causes me problems because all the clips are edited closely to the music.
Is there a way to prevent the clips from moving forward while i slow down the speed of the clip on the top layer?
    Thanks

You could lock the other video and audio tracks while doing the speed change.

  • Speed change stays greyed out.

NO matter if I bring in a .wav or .aif, the speed change stays greyed out. How do I get that active to change the speed?

If you just change the static speed, the audio also changes speed. If you use the time remapping speed keyframes, it unlocks the audio; the audio does not change speed. If you are doing variable speed, it is common that the native audio track is not used.

You have the accessibility VoiceOver feature turned on.
Triple click the home button and try going to Settings>General>Accessibility and turn VoiceOver off. You may have to use three fingers to scroll the screen to get there. If problems see the following for how to turn off via iTunes:

  • How to offset speed change in frame rate conforming?

Hi all. I am conforming video from about 25fps to 30 fps in cinema tools, before editing in FCP. Does any one know of a formula, or calculator tool that would tell me the speed change percentage to use, to get the clip to play in normal speed while editing? Is there a setting to do this automatically in FCP?

And you needn't speed change the footage at all. Simply cutting 25fps footage into a 30fps timeline will do. If you really desire a formula, to convert 25 fps to 30, you need to run it slower (less frames) so the speed is 25/30 or 5/6ths or 83% - to do it the other way, 30/25 = 6/5ths or 120%.
But, like I said, if you cut PAL footage into an NTSC timeline, it will adjust the speed appropriately - sizing too...

  • Upgrade and plug ins migration ? speed changes and transitions to motion 3

I have the FCS2 upgrade on its way soon i hope..
will my natress plug ins and others migrate when i go from FCS1 to 2?
I am mid project - have done all my captures but havent got into the nitty gritty of the edit yet - you reckon its a bit risky to upgrade?
I am super keen to get the ability to easily do ramps (in Motion 3 or in FC 6) and 3d logo fly arounds. Looking fwd to being able to throw transitions and speed changes into Motion 3 - i hear that it can deal with that now - is this true?

    Thanks - thats all good

  • How can I make a permanent change in the zoom level?

I want to know how I can make a permanent change is the zoom level? I dont want to constantly have to change it from the default value of 100% every time I go to a different page. Thanks.

    Hello,
You can also use the [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2592/ NoSquint] add-on to change the default zoom level for all websites at once. After setting your global zoom level, you can fine-tune the zoom on individual sites and set the options so that NoSquint remembers per-site settings.
After installing NoSquint, go to the add-ons page to set the per-site settings:
    * Tools (or [[Image: New Fx Menu]]) > Add-ons > Extensions
    * Click the "Options" button by NoSquint

  • Change a non-looping track to looping

    I'm using STP 2.0.2
I also just started reading Apple Pro Training Series 'Soundtrack Pro' by Mary Plummer.
It seems my interface is not the same as what she shows in the book. Doesn't state what version STP it's referencing.
Questions and confusion so far are:
    1. I can't find anywhere a way to change a non-looping track to looping. It's not in the clip drop-down or when I right-click the clip in the timeline.
    2. I can't find the format button (it's not on the top tools bar next to the sample rate selector). I can only change beats/time-based from the Multitrack drop-down.

That book is from 2006. I'm sure it's version 1. You should update to v3 anyway. It's being more stable, especially under Snow Leopard.
