CLEAN-UP START DISK...

Hey Guys!
I am new here & I have a quick question about clearing my start up disk so the operating system can run a bit faster .. In my about mac it displays that I have accumallated 89.14 GB in OTHER...WOW, I know! How do I go about clearing out these things? I am assuming I really don't need it if I don't know how to access it properly...
PLEASE HELP !!
-TIA

I hate the "Other" category because it tells you nothing except you are in trouble.
I suggest that you download and install OmniDiskSweeper.
When you run it, it will tell you the files and folders using the most disk space.
With that knowledge you can decide which data to move or delete to recover disk space.
A backup before you start this is wise idea.

how do i clean my start up disk and free up space

I have a iMac and desparetly need some freed up space. I have emptied trash for iPhoto, iMail, cleared extra disk images, checked for old printers, and then emptied my trash bin on the desktop. I have 616MB. Most of my space is taken up by photos, video and music that I would like to organize for our family. I have just started in with iMovie and will be working with many of those items, but due to the excessive amount of them, can I can move to an external hard drive and work on only one year at a time? (We have 7 years of digital overload to go through.) Is it easy to work with files once they are moved to an external hard drive? What would the best steps to take from here? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

how can in clean my start up disk it keeps tell me it is full

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB free on the startup volume for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved. ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To really see everything, you have to run it as root. Back up all data now if you haven't already done so. No matter what happens, you should be able to restore your system to the state it was in at the time of that backup. Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways: ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.) ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens. ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid. After installing ODS in the Applications folder, drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. When you're done with it, quit it and also quit Terminal.

Kappy's Personal Suggestions About OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior.  Versions 1.5.1 and later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.)
If you are using a pre-Leopard version of OS X, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  (These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion and should not be installed.)
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. (There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion or later.)
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner.
      2. Data Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. SyncTwoFolders
      6. Synk Pro
      7. Synk Standard
      8. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Always have a current backup before performing any system updates or upgrades.

Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity or 20 GBs, whichever is greater, as free space.

  • I want to wipe my computer clean and start with a new installation of Lion

My MBP has been acting strange.  I want to wipe it completely clean and start with a brand new installation of Lion.  How do I do that?  I know I can access the recovery partition by pressing 'Command+r' during the boot process.  However, do I need to use the disk utility option first and erase my internal hard drive?  Then do I use the new lion instal option?
Or if I choose the new lion isntallation from the recovery partition, does it erase my drive first?

    What error?
The sync is one way - computer to iphone.  The only exception is itunes purchases.  File>Transfer Purchases
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.  Have you failed to do this?

  • Start Disk Full MBP won't load beyond background image

Hello! My start disk was warning me it was approaching 'full' so I went out & bought an external hard drive.. backed up one user (primary) on the hard drive, then logged out so I could log in as the other user to back up that side of the computer's data, & when I logged in there all that loaded was a purple background (not my normal background) No access to any icons, applications, data, magnifying glass, etc.. nothing loaded basically. So I tried to log back in as the original user & ran into the exact same probelm, except from here I can access A SINGLE window of Safari.. it automatically loads just the Safari bar at the top & I can browse the internet still.. but cannot open any content such as youtube or download of course, also cannot open any other applications though it will open garage band's bar, just no files..
I would like to know what I need to do to be able to get in to either profile so I can delete at least enough files or get my computer to at least let me back up that other user so I can do whatever you recommend I need to to get my computer working again. Thanks!

After that, check the S.M.A.R.T. status on your HD: Boot from install disc (insert disc > restart > immediately hold down the c key and keep holding it until you see “Preparing Installation”) > at first screen select the language and click Continue > click on the Utilities Menu in the menubar > select Disk Utility > select your HD in the panel on the left side (the name of the HD’s manufacturer and the model number, usually the top item in the list) > look at the bottom of the main window next to S.M.A.R.T. status and see if it says “Verified” (good) or something more ominous like “Failing.”
If S.M.A.R.T. status is "Verified," run Repair Disk > click Repair Disk at bottom of main window. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’t happen, you may need a stronger utility (such as DriveGenius, TechToolPro, DiskWarrior) or if the directory is damaged beyond repair, you may need to reinstall the OS, or you may have a damaged HD which will need to be replaced (repair utilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HD itself). When this is finished, quit Disk Utility, quit the installer, and restart. Once booted normally, go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions.

  • Start disk full problem

When I open photoshop or attempt to sync my iphone, I get the message, that my start disk is full. I can move music, but I can't upload my pictures. I considered using Mackeeper but I see here that it might not be a good idea. Any suggestions?

    Empty the Trash.
In the Finder, select your hard drive on the desktop, and do a "Get Info".
What is the capacity of your drive?
How much free space do you have?
If it is less than 10-15% free, its time for a larger drive.

  • Changing the start disk on Mac Pro?

On my Mac Pro the start disk is the smallest of two disks and it is packed. This is become a huge problem. I need space because of film production. As it is now I cannot install new programs, which I need. So how do I solve this problem? Fast.

Dunno. Buy yourself a bigger hard drive install and format it . I think the most you can do in 1 drive is 3 TB, and I think it's SATA II (tho' Sata 3 will work just fine) . As for brand names, I can't really say
    Really?
    1. you don't need more than 100GB  usually which is why a $82 128GB Samsung EVO is perfect
    2. don't store media and data on the boot drive.
2a. Move all your data files and such to another drive.
4TB is the largest but about to be outdone soon.
A WD Blue 1TB goes for $65 or less and is fine for a basic drive.
Multiple backups and backup methods: TimeMachine, clone, etc.
2 yrs old is probably a MacPro5,1 meaning it can also boot from a PCIe SSD controller if you want, use another SSD for Aperture and such, and still have your 4 SATA drive bays free for some 1TB or larger drive sets.

I am currently facing a following error message "Please note your starting disk is upcoming full"... It does appear I did a mistake, could someone help me by solving this issue?? Thks José

No mistake, you simply have to delete some items from your MacBook Air.
Start by emptying the Trash - obvious, but easily overlooked.
Then determine what, if any, documents, photos, movies, etc. you can live without and either delete them or copy them to another device.

  • "Start Disk" out of space Following Backup..

I have a 250 GB HD on my MacBook which is running Snow Leopard. I had 80 GB's free prior to this situation.
I use Time Machine and SuperDuper, saving both backups to separate external HD's.
I was trying to schedule a second SuperDuper backup on another external HD that I use for miscellaneous files. The job ran, but eventually gave an error message that there was not enough space on the external HD to complete the backup.
I exited SuperDuper and navigated to the external HD via FINDER. I highlighted the ??? .sparcebundle ???? file created by SuperDuper and selected Move To Trach. This file was approximately 150 GB's in size.
    THAT'S WHEN THINGS WENT SOUTH
I suddenly began receiving pop up messages that my starter disk ( I believe that is what it said ) was full. I selected TRASH and attempted to empty it. After a reboot the machine would not come up...it would get past the grey Apple logo screen but then it would hang on a blue screen.
I was able to boot into single user mode and found that I only had 2 ( two ) GB's of available disk space. I deleted 50 GB's of "stuff" and deleted the Trash. I was then able to reboot. I ran a disk inventory program that shows where files are residing on the HD as well as their size.
I can't find this mysterious "chunk" of data that is taking up the remainder of my hard drive disk space.
I have tried doing a Time Machine restore but every time it begins it asks for my Admin password. Once I enter it, nothing happens.
I am also unable to do a restore from SuperDuper. When I select the original source to be used as the backup I can select the .sparcebunle from my external HD but when I go to select the destination ( my Macbook HD ) that selection is greyed out.
Can anyone shed light on what may have happened, how I can find this mysterious chunk of data and delete it, or how / if I can get Time Machine to do a successful full restore.
I'm a stickler for backing up my machine but the very first time I need to be able to do a restore I can't. Errrrgggggg.....
    Thanks !

Thank you x1000 V.K. I didn't know any of that and REALLY appreciate you explaining it. I still have a question if you have a moment...
I have the Snow Leopard Upgrade disk that I purchased a while back... the one that cost $29.99 or $39.99 ( can't recall ). Is this the disk you were referring to when you said to reboot, hold "C" etc?
    yes.
About SuperDuper.... what settings should I use in the future... I'm not very familiar with the program and must have just selected the "sparsebundle" without really understanding the various options.
superduper has a very straightforward interface. when you start it there are two buttons to choose the source drive and the destination drive. so you choose the drives that you want. that's it. just don't choose to back up to a disk image.
    Again.. THANKS !!!

  • How to clean the start up disk?

How do I clear space on my start up disk?

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion's Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.
