Clean Windows Install Help

Hi, I really could use some help. My thinkvantage software got buggy and wasn't functioning, even after resotring the computer to factory clean. I erased everything, including the system partition, and started an XP install on a clean partition. I followed the instructions on the Lenovo website, but I didn't back up my IBM Tools folder. So I am stuck. I need help getting from a clean install to a working computer. I have a second computer that I am using to access the internet. Here's what I think would help:
1. A list of the drivers I should download to get my system back up. Is there a specific one that would start an entire system update?
2. Is there a location where I can download that IBM Tools folder?
I'm not sure what else I can tell you. Any help would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave

chez17, welcome to the forum,
Start with ThinkVantage System Update, if it misses something you can go to the Driver Site for your ThinkPad.
Happy installing

  • Which APP is most appropriate to be used immediately after a fresh clean Windows install?

    Hi,
The product Name of my computer is: HP Pavilion dv6-6093ex Entertainment
    Notebook PC support
The number of my computer is : LM610EA#A2N.
I know to install the required drivers for my notebook computer, I will need to use the HP Recovery Manager; which will install the original software and hardware drivers that first came with my notebook. To do this, please follow this document on Using Recovery Manager to Restore Software and Drivers (Windows 7), as well as (Windows 8 and 8.1).
To update the drivers on my computer to the latest software, I recommend following this document on Using HP Support Assistant (Windows 7) as well as (Windows 8 and 8.1).
    However,
First: my primary goal is to know which HP tool is most appropriate for locating, obtaining, and installing all appropriate drivers, updates, etc. immediately after a clean new Windows 7 or 8.1 installation.
I know that HP support assistant helps to download the updates for existing sotware, and drivers. However, if I made a fresh installation of widows, there wouldn't be existing drivers or software, then  Which one is most appropriate to be used immediately after a fresh new clean Windows install?? -- to determine, retrieve, and install all the appropriate drivers??
Second: How to save/transfer/export/move the Drivers and Application built-in HP Recovery Manager onto a HDD Or a disc(DVD/CD). So, in case I have delted the HP Recovery Manager, and installed a new Windows 7 installation, then I would be using these Drivers and Applications saved on a HDD or Disc to retrieve, and install all the appropriate dirvers and applications?
Finally: All rivers and Application built-in HP Recovery Manager are saved as NON-SoftPaq on a folder called SwSetup. So could I download all rivers and Application built-in HP Recovery Manager as a SoftPaq.

How are you starting X?   That shows that X started successfully, but the program that controls X, generally your desktop environment exited.
If you are using startx or Xinit, please post your ~/.xinitrc file

  • Y40 GPU not working after clean windows install.

I did a clean Windows install since I got a new HDD and I can not get the switchable GPU working again. I have the latest intel and amd drivers from Lenovo installed and both show up under dxdiag. When I try to access switchable graphics settings all I get is a blank page. The game I am playing shows what gpu is being used and it is Intel.
If anyone has any ideas that would be great!
    Thank you!

  • Mid-2010 27" iMac very slow, even after clean OS install - HELP!

Good afternoon guys, I'm hoping someone can offer me some advice.
I bought my Mid-2010 27" iMac in May-ish 2011. Everything was brilliant, I couldn't believe the ease of use, and especially the start up speed, coming from a world of PCs. My iMac was used almost every day, for web browsing, photo editing, etc.
Maybe about April / May this year it started becoming very slow, slow to boot, slow to respond to mouse clicks, slow to do anything. Since I'd used about 750GB of my HDD (mainly photos), I decided I would archive some and hope that would ease the congestion. As my photos were stored in Aperture, it took about 3 days to export them all to my external HDD, 3 days of the iMac only getting so far, switching itself off, then me finally getting it to come back on (I was getting messages about Kernals, etc. now and again through boot too) - it finally backed up my photos I have from my daughters first year.
Great news, but I still had probably 400GB / 500GB of photos from her second year and any other photos I'd taken. I found the root of my Aperture directory, and managed to pull these images off, so everything is now backed up.
I decided I should try and clean install, and managed to get the HDD to boot and choose the option to re-install from Apple's Servers. All installed OK, and we're good to go! Fired up the iMac, and although it's fractionally quicker to respond, and a lot more stable, it's not quite right. And I've lost all my iLife Apps which originally came with the iMac.
Does this sound like a HDD issue? As I say, it was on quite a lot through the backup procedure, and I had set it (maybe stupidly looking back now) to never sleep, and for the monitor to only switch off after 3 hours. Or does it sound like something more is wrong with it?
I am quite confident of working with PCs, so would manage to replace the HDD I think, looking at some videos, etc. online. I did upgrade the RAM to 16GB, and that was simple enough. My question is, when you replace the HDD, how does it know where to look to the Apple Servers for the clean OS install? Or do I have to do something to let it know where to look first? I have to point out I don't have any Time Machine backup, etc. as the iMac was just not stable enough to get this in place - and up until that point, again probably stupid now looking back, I had never bothered to set up.
Any help / advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated. At the moment I have totally fallen out of love with the iMac, for something to cost £1,500+ and only last 3 years, where my last build PC lasted Approx 8 years for half the price, is very disappointing.
    Thanks in advance,
    Col

Just suggesting things right off the bat here-
To me it sounds as though the HDD is failing, if your iMac shipped with a Seagate drive try entering your serial number to see if Apple will replace it:http://www.apple.com/au/support/imac-harddrive/
Or try running Apple Hardware Test a few times back to see if it is a hardware error.
As for the iLife apps they should've come on one of the install discs that shipped with your mac.
If your iMac is ineligible for the program above I would consider replacing it yourself with either an SSD or HDD, as for recognising apples servers for download, you will need the original install discs that came with your computer or if you haven't already it will need a firmware update to enable internet recovery
See here:Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery
    Good Luck!

  • How can i make the volume controller on a pavillion dv4 work after a clean windows install?

    Hello!
Recently I performed a clean windows 7 install from a windows install disk I previously owned, the problem is that this disk didn't intalled the drivers and programs specific for this computer. What I want to know is which driver or program I need to install to make the volume controller on my computer to work again? The problem is that the volume bar that previously appeared on the screen and the "bing" sound indicating the volume level doesn't appear or sound now.
All other things seem to work fine, this is the only problem so far.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Try downloading and installing the latest HP OSD Utility on the following link.

  • I had to do a clean windows install. im missing drivers

How can I find out what drivers I need to where do I down load them so I can manually get my computer back to the state it was when I bought it?

    hi mhmohamadi,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
The BIOS is pre set to load on UEFI Settings and you will need to change it first.
Open th BIOS Menu by tapping the F1 Key when you turn it on.
Once youre in BIOS you will need to change these settings
    1. Under Exit TAB
Look for r OS optimized defaults - Change the settings to Disabled
    2.  Under security TAB
Look for Secure Boot and set it to Disabled
    3.  Under Start up TAB
CSM -- This option to what ever will enable the options Boot mode and Boot priority because these are Grayed out
Once CSM is changed these option will be available
        Boot Mode set to Legacy
Boot Priority set to Legacy First
Now BIOS is set, HIT F10 to Save and Exit
Unfortunately There are no driver package, you will have to download each of the drivers on this list

  • Clean windows install - losing any software?

I'm going to do a clean install as I upgrade from Vista 32-bit (ack!) to Windows 7 64-bit. Am I going to lose anything I won't be able to get via System Update? Anything that shipped with my Thinkpad I should care about? Like Roxio?
Will the install process allow me to take care of the service partition? Or do I need to handle this manually?
I've grabbed the most essential drivers and will let system update handle the rest. Anything else I should do before I start?
    Thanks for the advice!

    Hello,
If you have not done so, you should make a set of recovery discs for the Microsoft Windows Vista installation on your ThinkPad.  That way, if you ever do have a problem and need to revert to the original operating system you shall be able to do so, with all of the ThinkVantage utilities and Lenovo supplied software intact.
As AndyP noted, some of the software supplied with your ThinkPad is not available for download using the ThinkVantage System Update program, such as DVD viewing software.  After reinstalling it from wherever you backed up the C:\SWTOOLS directory, you should be able to update it as you would any other Lenovo-supplied software through the ThinkVantage System Update program, though.
My personal preference is to run the the ThinkVantage System Update program before running Microsoft Windows Update on a newly-configured ThinkPad as a precaution against the Microsoft update service installing the wrong drivers, but I cannot say that I have had that problem with any recent computer or version of Microsoft Windows.

  • Windows Install Help on custom built PC

Yesterday I had posted some problems about not being able to get past the initial screen and entering the BIOS settings after building a PC.  I have successfully moved past that point and am now trying to install windows.
I have read posts and done the following:
Turned on PC with blank disc in the floppy drive.  When the pc asked for me to enter a System Disc, I put Windows XP Pro into the dvd/cd drive, removed the floppy and hit ctrl-alt-del.
    I get the following message
    Boot from CD:
Disk boot failure.  Insert system disk and press enter.
Is there a step I am missing?
After the initial boot, I went into BIOS settings, made sure harddrive was set up properly, turned off the "other boot devices" in advanced because I was getting a Nvidia boot agent message and then tried to install windows as per the above.

Actually, it's better to put the HD as first boot, and CD as second.  That way, it won't find anything on the HD (assuming it's new or has no MBR) and will boot off the cd.  Once that's done and the comp resets it'll boot into windows without you having to press f11 or going into the bios to change the priorities again.

  • [Solved] U430 Clean Windows Install

So I've got my Ideapad u430 touch yesterday, and wanted to install an SSD and upgrade the ram instantly, so I did.
Because I had to replace the HDD, I also had to reinstall windows. I got a hold of a windows 8 retail image, made sure it's not been tampered with and installed it on the ultrabook using a generic key.
After I completed the installation, I uninstalled the generic key and tried installing the OEM key that's embedded in the BIOS by reading it through RW Everything utility. So I've got the OEM key, typed 'slui 3' in admin cmd, and now it tells me that it couldn't verify the key.
http://superuser.com/a/710346 - This is the guide I used.
So my question is how do I activate windows 8 with the OEM key that is on my ultrabook.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    This is resolved.
What I actually needed was a Windows 8.1 OEM image since that's what the laptop shipped with. After I made sure my USB Flash Drive that contains the install is UEFI bootable, I proceeded with the installation and the product key was detected automatically.

  • Lost Linksys password after new windows install

I have had my Linksys E4200 for a few years now. When I'm home my cell phone and laptop both use my wireless connection. My desktop computer had the main Cisco console which provided the passwords to both my cell and laptop.
My problem is I recently had a virus attack to my desktop from clicking on a bad email link. I couldn't remove the virus so I did a clean windows install. I can't find my Linksys router box but I found my CD disc. The disc is asking for my password which is probably somewhere in my original box (which of course I can't find now). My router has the model number and mac address but I don't know how to reinstall my console without my original password.
I never disconnected my router when I did my new windows install on my desktop, and my computer still recognizes my Linksys router. When I click on the device icon it says, "network connected", Catagory: wireless network router, Manufacturer: Cisco, Model: Internet Access Server. Is there enough information so I can recover my password and install my console again? Thanks...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello DuMartin,
It is asking for the password you set up for your network. If that will not work, then it would be best to reset and configure the router again.

  • Clean Windows 8.1 install on Y40-80

    Hi All!
I just recieved my Y40-80, and so far it's looking good.
The only problem is that I think I would like to do a clean install of Windows 8.1 to get rid of all the bloatware and start fresh.  My understanding of the steps required are as follows:
    1. Find the exact version of Windows 8.1 I am using.  Download that version of Windows 8.1 from official sources and make a bootable USB stick.
    2.  Reinstall Windows 8.1 from the USB, formatting in the process.
    3.  Download and reinstall the Windows 8.1 hardware drivers from here: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/lenovo-y-series-laptops/y40-80?TabName
    Here are my questions:
    1.  Are the steps above correct?  Am I missing anything or doing anything wrong?
    2.  Are all the required drivers on Lenovo's site above?  Are any of drivers there unnescesary?
    3.  Should I worry about preserving the OneKey recovery partition, or should I let it go with the format?
    4.  Is any of the bundled software important or worth keeping?
    Thanks for you help!

I looked in the bios and I didn't see anything about the different partitions. Would I not be prompted to assign partitions during the Windows install? Or did you mean there was something else I have to set in the bios?
Answer: Bios and Partitions location are in the CMOS Chip and the HDD/SSD respectively. So if you're looking for the partitions in the bios you won't find any. While running the OS, if you press Winkey + X then select Disk Management you will see the partitions in the existing HDD/SSD.
During Windows Installation you will be ask where to install the OS in the displayed partition/partitions onscreen. The problem that you might encounter is which of the existing partitions to select. And will the installer proceed with the selected partition.
Regarding OKR: I'm not really too interested in preserving the partition to do a factory restore, but it would be nice to make one once I've set up the clean install. Is this something that needs to be set up during the initial installation or can it be done after?
Answer: You can't create the OKR partitions after the clean install. And you can't create the OKR partitions before the clean install without using any other method. What I mean is that you can create the partitions but it will not be able to function properly together with the NOVO button.
EDIT: Alternately, can I do a clean install without removing the original factory restore partition? It might be nice to have it there as a backup plan.
Answer: AFAIK, when it is a clean install there should be no other partitions except those use by the installed OS. So the original restore partition/partitions will not exist after the clean install process.

  • T440s clean windows 7 install - touchpad crash

    Hi,
I just got a new T440s. I was very happy until I tried to do a clean windows 7 install. Everythings seems to work fine, except for the touchpad. As soon as I install the synaptics driver (i've tried from the lenovo site, the synaptics site, and from the previous installation's file), the synaptics enhancments program crashes, and I no longer have guestures working (specifically scroll). It crashes again if I try to run it manually. When I reboot, it also crashes on startup. I've tried reinstalling the driver and even reinstalling windows once more, but to no avail.
Can anyone help? I'm going nuts...
    Thanks!

  • Trying to install SAP Business One 8.8 on a clean Windows 7 professional pc

Hi,   i am trying to install SAP Business One V 8.8 on a clean Windows 7 professional laptop.  I need to install the server and client sides.  I have already installed SQL server express 2005.
When i try to to install the server software I get the error message 1628 installation failed almost straight away.  I ket the same message if I try and install the server tools, SBo server or outlook integration.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks in advance
    Simon

    Hi Simon,
    Solution to Problem ID :1618
    Try the following Steps :
    1. Clear the 'Temporary' Folder of Windows 7 : Start ->Run->%temp%->Press 'Enter'->Select All & Delete
    2. Restart your machine. (This is Must)
Actually it keeps an image of the previous installations, so always for re-installation you need to perform this steps.
Same is with Win 2008 Server editions also.
Now proceed with the installation and remember always run SBO installations in Windows 7 and 2008 Server by clicking on 'Run as Administrator'
Hope your problem would be solved.
