Cleaning dust from inside G5

Hi
I've just had a problem
My G5 2.5Ghz dual just shut down no warning just went off there seemed to be a bit of a burning smell when it did
I checked it would start up again after i left it a couple of hours to cool down it seems to be ok
I had a look inside & it looks a bit dusty in there now i have ordered some cans of compressed air but i dont just want to dive in there & start spraying it around
What things should i be looking for is there anything i need to stay away from spraying what components if any do i need to remove
If anyone has done this procedure could you please post the steps you took or if you know the procedures again could you please post them
I have done a search first to see if anyone has done this before & i did find the link someone kindly posted for the service source PDF
Thanks in advance

None of the above. What, you think I don't watch the forums?
The reality is that I very rarely hang onto any hardware longer than two years. I bought the DP2.7 refurbished and it still had 1 year of AppleCare left on it when I sold it. I also started using a kill-a-watt meter to measure power consumption and felt that the PMG5 used too much juice for what I was doing with it. Same goes for the server I sold and moved those operations to a mini. This MBP uses far less juice than either of the G5s and i have the electric bills to prove it.
As an aside, I've bought nothing but refurbished Macs since they were available from Apple. I don't know if this is a fact, but it sure seems like I never seem to suffer any of the "normal" problems so it makes me think they take care of most of that stuff before shipping them back out.
However, you've been here long enough to realize that it is true that the majority of the time when someone complains about a dead Mac they have never opened it up and cleaned it out, let alone not having it on a UPS.

• HT3226 how do I clean dust from inside Mac Pro?

I have compressed air, but I know it also can leave some residue, even when it is held upright (never ever use compressed air from a can held other than upright!). But is there something like a mini-vacuum cleaner? I don't want to blow the dust and cat hair further into the machine. When using compressed air it tends to blow it everywhere...what about compressed air plus holding, nearby, the operating end of a vacuum cleaner hose?

I have just cleaned my Mac Pro. Yes you are on the right track. I pulled out the processor assembly at the bottom, the SuperDrive tray at the top (both very easy), and the graphics card (at little bit harder),  and with compressed air in one hand, and vacuum cleaner in the other, I blowed and vacuumed out all the dust, there was heaps!
As others have suggested, use the compress air conservatively and in brief bursts, and only when the vacuum can't get to or dislodge some dust. I've had one graphics card fail due to the build up of dust in his fan fins, so I recommend getting it out and cleaning those little fins - which will probably be clogged with dust.
My Mac Pro now runs much quieter, and happier I suspect.

• Cleaning dust from imac

I was cleaning my imac today and noticed a significant amount if dust accumulated at the air vents on the back. I vacuumed these out, but Im wondering if it is ever necessary to open the machine and clean out the dust. Is there a filter of some sort on the inside? should I use compressed air and just try to blow out the vents from the outside? Just wondering what a good practice is to keep the dust out of my machine?

Hi there,
Your machine has been well engineered to limit the amount of dust build up inside, however through time dust will build up, to be honest just blowing air in doesn't really work. Unless you really know what you are doing then i don't advise opening the unit up to clean it out.

• How to remove dust from inside a Lenovo G580?

Hi....
I have a Lenovo G580 for more than a year now... got it from my company as a gift, its warranty has ended... it worked superbly for a year, it still does but my biggest concern is that now it always stays 60 - 65 Degree C hot in idle conditions... using any heavy graphics application, it gets shut down automatically to prevent any further damage from overheating... Reason for that is the dust built up in it... I don't have a blower or cool hair dryer to use... the only way I think practicable is opening it's all screws and manually removing all the dust with the help of a brush or may be using a hot-air hair dryer (which I have) from far above... can someone guide me how to get rid of this dust with minimum disassembly possible...? any precautions also plz... I have the hardware maintenance manual with me but don't wanna try opening the lappy before knowing someone else's experience about it...
Thanks....

I would suggest buying a blow dryer, because you should do cleaning at regular intervals like once in every 6 months. You can refer to the user and maintenance manual for easy disassembly.
Good Luck!

• Cleaning Dust from x220 fan without digging too deep into laptop

Hello fellow posters:
I've noticed that there is a whiny sound from the cpu for several months now ever since I got this laptop refurbished online. I've read into the problem and I've read several solutions
Spray the vents with compressed air without opening laptop
Open the laptop and spray on the fan holding the can air of vertically
Open the laptop and clean the fan with a brush.
I'm afraid either static or moisture will harm the laptop
I opened the laptop today and noticed there were dust buildups in the wings of the fan but I didn't do anything (It was just an inspection for now I suppose).

This is a snapshot of some other x220 (not mine). In the upper left corner there is the cpu fan. I can access it by removing the palmrest and keyboard. I'm trying to find a way not to remove the heatsink/fan so I don't dig too dip into the laptop
What should I do to fix this dust problem?
Solved!
Go to Solution.

I would just remove keyboard and palmrest, block the fan with your finger, a tootpick or any other object and apply compressed air.
I normally do it from the vents towards the fan, then move the fan a little and repeat the operation. After that I apply air directly to the fan vents, always blocking the fan!
Hope this helps...

• What is the best way to clean dust from unibody MacBook?

I have the aluminum late 2008 MacBook (basically like the pro, except not). I've realized that I keep finding myself in dusty situations, and while I don't think it's affected my MacBook too much, I think a basic clean is in order.
Anyone know the best method? I've done a bit of browsing and it seems that my options include using a compressed air can, vacuum, moist dust cloth, and even opening it up and shaking. They've all been heavily disputed. I suppose I'll recieve a debate of that sort here, but perhaps we can reach a majority of votes toward one or the other?
Or perhaps, does anyone know if Apple provides some kind of MacBook cleaning service or if computer repair companies would do this? I don't know if that's too drastic...

• How to prevent dust fr, How to prevent dust from getting inside the ports and earpiece?

So I just got my iPhone 5 a coupe days ago and I just can't seem to keep dust from getting inside my phones port and speaker holes and also the earpiece. I have a case on the phone but obviously it doesn't protect those areas. I also bought a can of canned air but that only works when I used it at that moment but as soon as I'm out the house dust starts getting in those areas. I also had this problem with my precious iPhone 4. Can someone help??

The only thing you can really do is get a case that protects the ports. Lifeproof, Otterbox (to a lesser degree) and Ballistic come to mind.
I carried a 4 and a 4S for quite some time with no case at all with few problems as a result of dust. Every once in a while, I would get a dust bunny in the headphone jack. Had to clean that out with a toothpick. Clean the dock connector with a clean dry toothbrush.
I have an Otterbox defender on my 5. Haven't had it long enough to swear to how well it will do as far as dust goes, but so far, so good. The re-designed speaker/mic grille should help some.

• HP G61 Laptop - Cleaning dust

Hi,
Does anyone have a guide or some steps into how to clean the dust from the fan in my laptop.
Don't want to just dive striaght in as I know everything inside a laptop is very compact and I will more than likely cause more problems.
Basically my fan is going crazy without anything really running on my laptop.
This will then cause it to go VERY slow when I do decide to use it.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
You're welcome
Compressed air can be pretty effective at removing dust from the fan and intake vents.
You can disassemble the notebook if you wish, but I wouldn't recommend it if you haven't done this before - if you do want to try this, here's your Maintenance & Service Guide.
Best regards,

Hi Ben,
Thank you for the response. I followed the link and tried reading everything you posted on AEs but I'm afraid that I didn't understand it all. It seems that each AE example had a single input and a single output (e.g. a double). Is this the case?
What I have is a couple of front panel clusters containing (approximately) 18 control doubles, 8 indicator doubles, 5 boolean radio button constructs and 26 boolean control discretes. I clusterized it to make it readable. In addition I'll eventually have a cluster of task references for hardware handles.
All I want to do is update the front panel values like I would do in a C, VB or any other language. I've tried referencing the cluster and using the reference from inside the loops. I've tied using local variables. Neither works. I'm experimenting with globals but it seems that I have to construct the front panel in the gloabal and then I wouldn't know how to repoduce that on the front panel of the main VI.  Sometimes it seems that more time is spent getting around Labview constructs than benefitting from them.
I hope the 'Add Attachment' function actuals puts a copy of the VI here and not a link to it.
Thanks again for the suggestion,
Frank

• How to cancel a Timer from inside a TimerTask ?

I have a web application with this structure:
Tomcat starts a servlet and that starts a master thread to run once every 10 minutes,
that master thread in turn starts any number of individual tasks to run until completion,
the idea being a "shoot and forget" methodology.
public class MasterTask extends TimerTask {
// run once every 10 minutes
// retrieve a list of actions to do, this is from a database, could be 10 could be 100
// for each action schedule a TimerTask
// the reason for using a new Timer each time is that any of the action tasks
// may take a long time or not, i do not want an individual task to wait
// for a previous one to finish, therefore each task is put on it's own timer
// also in order to spread resources somewhat there is an incremental delay
// so the is some time between the start of each task as there can be many
Timer timeit;
int delay = 0;
for ( ActionTask doit : taskList ) {
timeit = new Timer();
timeit(doit,delay);
delay = delay+200;
public class ActionTask extends TimerTask {
// perform whatever actions need to be done inside this individual TimerTask
// at some point the individual task has completed it's work
// how do i completely remove it from this location ?
I know that inside the TimerTask i can call cancel() but that will only prevent it from running again it does not actually remove it completely, it remains in existence and therefore uses up memory. What i need to do is call the cancel() method on the Timer in order to remove both the Timer and TimerTask.
If i do not do this then the program will just keep creating new Timers until eternity.
( or basically until i run out of memory )
How do i call the Timer.cancel() method from INSIDE the TimerTask ?
( Note that both classes are seperate classes/files and not inside the same file or class. )
thanks,
Erik

Gotcha,
the Timer does get cancelled but the TimerTask runs to completion first.
Was expecting a kill() type effect but that is not what cancel() does.
Servlet started by Tomcat
package servlet;
import java.util.*;
import javax.servlet.ServletException;
public class TestServlet extends javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet implements javax.servlet.Servlet {
        public void init() throws ServletException {
              Timer timeIt = new Timer();
              timeIt.schedule(new timertasks.testmaster(), 0, 10000); // every 10 seconds
}master task runs every 10 seconds indefinetly,
and every 10 seconds it starts (kicks off) 2 new tasks.
package timertasks;
import java.util.Timer;
import java.util.TimerTask;
public class testmaster extends TimerTask {
         public testmaster() {}
         // scheduled to run once every 10 seconds
         public void run() {
              int delay = 0;
              Timer timeit;
              for ( int count = 0; count < 2 ; count++ ) {
                   timeit = new Timer();
                   timeit.schedule(new ActionTask(timeit), delay, 2000);     // every 2 seconds
                   delay = delay + 200;
}individual timertask, just comment out the timeit.cancel(); to see the difference in effect.
package timertasks;
import java.util.Timer;
import java.util.TimerTask;
public class ActionTask extends TimerTask {
         private Timer timeit;
         private int runcounter = 0;
         public ActionTask(Timer timeit) {
              this.timeit = timeit;
         // without cancel then values of runcounter should keep rising and more and more tasks should appear
         // with cancel each should run only once
         public void run() {
              System.out.println("before cancel, runcounter="+runcounter);
              timeit.cancel();
              System.out.println("after cancel, runcounter="+runcounter);
              runcounter++;
}thanks.

• How to allow some fixed extension go in from outside to inside but not allow go from inside to outside

how to allow some fixed extension go in from outside to inside but not allow go from inside to outside
for example, allow JPEG, MOV, AVI data flow from outside to inside
but not allow JPEG, MOV, AVI files access or upload or get by outside, in another words not from inside to outside
how to configure?

Hi,
The ZBF link sent earlier show how we can inspect URI in http request
parameter-map type regex uri_regex_cm
       pattern “.*cmd.exe”
class-map type inspect http uri_check_cm
       match request uri regex uri_regex_cm
ZBf is the feature on Cisco routers and ASA though concepts are little same but works differently. However it is important that you can be more granular with the protocol (layer 7) inspection only. Like on ASA if you will try to restrict .exe file from a p2p application that won't be possible, But on router you have some application for p2p in NBAR and you can use it file filtering. Please check configuartion example for both devices.
Thanks
